SPECIALISM SUCCESS Colleagues in the Languages Department have had the pleasure of working with three trainee teachers this year in languages. All three faced their final assessment this half term and have passed with flying colours. This represents a tremendous amount of hard work by the trainees who have spent all year gathering evidence and developing their practice. They will be a credit to the profession and all three have secured positions for next year. Mr Bridge will be teaching in Austria, Miss Kraehenbuehl in Telford and Miss Lu in Manchester.

PARENTS AS PARTNERS - STAYING HEALTHY During the College day it is important that students remain hydrated. Plain water in clear plastic bottles is allowed in class. These can be topped up at the water fountain in the canteen. Fruit juices and squash may be brought into College for drinking before College, at break, lunch or after College. No cans or any kind of carbonated drinks are allowed at any time during the College day or in after-College clubs. These, when found, will be confiscated.

OUR NEW EMAIL HELP SERVICE — ”BEING ME”

For many years our College has had an email address called [email protected] for students and parents to report

bullying issues if required. Some students may experience other difficulties that also require some help and support, but are not

bullying issues as such. These difficulties may be connected to something that is going on in their life at present, or something they

are struggling to deal with.

For this reason the College has set up another confidential email address called [email protected] for students to

use should they find themselves in need of help, support and guidance. Emails will be read by a senior member of staff who will then

seek out other staff volunteers (we have 17 of them) to offer the help and support that is required.

IS YOUR CHILD ADOPTED?

Can you help us secure additional funding to help our children achieve their full potential?

From April 2014, schools in England are entitled to receive a grant called the 'pupil premium for children adopted from care or who left

care under a Special Guardianship Order (SGO) on or after 30 December 2005.' Schools can also claim the pupil premium for children

who left care under a Residence Order (RO) on or after 14 October 1991. In order to claim this valuable grant, we would be grateful if

adoptive parents could inform the college if their child is adopted and provide supporting evidence, for example, the Adoption (Court)

Order. This information will be dealt with discretely and confidentially and the grants will be used to help this particular group of children

achieve their potential in their education.

RECOMMENDED READS

Will Grayson, Will Grayson

by John Green

This is the New York Times bestselling novel from John Green, the author of multi-million bestseller The Fault in Our

Stars, and David Levithan. One cold night, in a most unlikely corner of Chicago, Will Grayson crosses paths with...Will

Grayson. Two guys with the same name, running in two very different circles, suddenly find their lives going in new

and unexpected directions, and culminating in epic turns-of-heart and the most fabulous musical ever to grace the high

-school stage. Told in alternating voices from two award-winning authors - John Green (author of The Fault in Our

Stars) and David Levithan (author of Boy Meets Boy) - this unique collaborative novel features a double helping of the

heart and humour that has won both authors legions of fans.

Maggot Moon

by Sally Gardner

Narrated against the backdrop of a ruthless regime determined to beat its enemies in the race to the moon, MAGGOT

MOON is the astonishing new novel from award-winning author Sally Gardner. When his best friend Hector is

suddenly taken away, Standish Treadwell realises that it is up to him, his grandfather and a small band of rebels to

confront and defeat the ever-present oppressive forces of the Motherland. Utterly original and stunning, it is impossible

not to be moved by MAGGOT MOON's powerful story and the unforgettable heroism of Standish.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS

Over the last week of College attendance was as follows:

Year 7 - 96.7% (up 0.1%)

Year 8 - 95.7% (down 0.3%)

Year 9 - 95.2% (down 0.2%)

Year 10 - 94.1% (down 2.3%)

This was a disappointing week. The average for the week was 95.4%

(down 0.7% on the previous week). Since 3rd September attendance has

remained at 95.8%. We aim for 97%.

Last week GIRLS attendance has decreased 0.3% to 94.8%, BOYS at-

tendance has decreased 1.2% to 96.0%. Since 3rd September boys are

winning girls 96.4% to 95.2%.

Parents are politely reminded to avoid absence unless it is absolutely necessary. Thank you for your on-going support regarding medical

absence and holiday absence.

Holiday absence from College

Holidays have not been authorised since 1st September 2013 under new legislation on all English schools. Requests for holidays must

still be made in writing to the appropriate Key Stage leader (Mrs Garvey KS5, Mr Blades KS4 and Mr Diamond KS3), but in the vast ma-

jority of cases they will be unauthorised. A Fixed Penalty Notice may be issued of £60 per parent / carer per student, to be paid within 21

days, otherwise the penalty will rise to £120 per parent / carer to be paid within 28 days. If the penalty remains unpaid then the matter will

proceed to the Magistrates Court where you will receive a criminal record if you are found guilty.

Medical absence from College

Whilst the College requires parents to contact us on each day of absence , school policy now requires that any student who accumulates

7 or more days of absence during the course of the academic year will be asked to provide medical confirmation of the need to be absent

before any further absences are authorised for medical reasons. This is a necessary measure as we closely monitor absence due to ill-

ness / medical reasons in order that we can ensure students are supported where needed.

For your information medical confirmation does not have to be a doctor's note but can also take the form of a medical appointment card,

a copy of a relevant dated prescription or evidence of medication being taken

If no medical evidence is provided then the absence will be coded as unauthorised. Ten or more unauthorised absences may result in

you receiving a Fixed Penalty Notice. This incurs a penalty of £60 per parent / carer to be paid within 21 days, otherwise the penalty will

rise to £120 per parent / carer to be paid within 28 days. If the penalty remains unpaid then the matter will proceed to the Magistrates

Court where you will receive a criminal record if you are found guilty.

The link between attendance and achievement is well researched and documented and students should be aiming for an attendance rate

of no less than 97% over the year. Thank you for your continued support with this importance issue.
