From the Principal’s Desk

There are some great examples in today’s newsletter of the integrated STEM units of work going on in classes. It’s fantastic to see our students follow the Design Thinking process to dig deeply into issues and prototype then develop designs to help solve them. Next week on Friday we have a Pupil free day. Staff will be digging deeply into the language of maths and looking at how important precise maths language is to conceptual development for students. We will be sharing the language of maths with parents so that we can develop accurate maths vocabulary in our learners.

We have seen some great

showcases of learning this week with our Market day and History museum from our senior studios.

Our STEM ambassadors will also feature this week in a joint venture with Teacher’s Mutual Bank and Social Ventures Australia. Look out for their video which we will share on Facebook as soon as it’s released. Our student Ministry has been working with Prospect Council, Governing council and DPTI to try to make our roads safer at pick up and drop off time. They will also be designing a project to make the Regency Road crossing more visible to traffic approaching. The drop and go zone on Stuart road will soon be extended so please keep a look out for changed parking conditions in the near future. In the meantime please follow

the suggested traffic flow “school loop” at the beginning and end

of the day.

Our Podcasting team have released another interview, this time with Eugene Warrior it is available to watch via PNTV on Facebook. Marg Clark

Eugene Warrior Visits PNPS On Monday the 10th of August, the students in the Senior Studio were privileged to participate in an inspiring and

motivating session led by Eugene Warrior.

Eugene Warrior is an Aboriginal man with family connections to Kokatha, Barngala, Wirangu and the Antakarinya language groups. He is currently the Manager, Aboriginal Health Promotion, Wellbeing SA, Health SA. His address to the students resonated with our school values of resilience, compassion, curiosity and creativity. He reaffirmed that these values are vital for building community and achieving success in all aspects of life.

Eugene drew on his extensive experience as a country police officer; the only Aboriginal Commercial Helicopter Pilot in South Australia; the State Coordinator of Aboriginal Sport and Recreation; the manager of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation to Adelaide and Port Lincoln, and the coordinator of many programs in partnership with Tennis Australia, to reinforce the importance of connection to school, community and family.

The students were highly engaged and asked many thoughtful questions. We all went away from the session inspired to face new challenges with renewed resilience and compassion

Volleyball SA Carnival On Wednesday 19th of August, 24 Year 6/7 students competed at the Volleyball SA Primary Schools Cup at the Lightsview Community and Sports Center, competing against other school teams from the Adelaide North Eastern suburbs. Volleyball has been taught in PE for 4 weeks and a hugely popular activity during lunch and recess.

This was a hotly contested carnival, due to it being the first sporting event for the school since COVID-19. The school entered two 2 girls teams, an all boys team and a mixed team. All teams competed extremely well, and the standard of Volleyball was brilliant from all players involved. Well done to everyone!

“Eugene Warrior was a fantastic man who provided great answers to all of our questions. He was very relaxed and made our environment a lot calmer. It made it much easier to talk to him. He was very funny and shared some good jokes through his answers. It was very interesting to hear everything he had to say, and was funny to know he once took Santa Claus in his helicopter! Thank-you Eugene, from all of the kids involved in the podcast, it was an incredible experience to meet you.” By Clementine

On Tuesday the 18th of August, the students in the Senior Studio held a ‘Market Day’ as a culmination of all their hard work in their study of Economics & Entrepreneurs. The learning goals included:

businesses

creating a formal business plan

selling a product and packaging that has been designed and

produced at school

Some of the challenges for each business included:

and how they would address a social or environmental

problem, while also making a profit?

designing a business logo and motto

pitching to a ‘Shark Tank’ consisting of a teacher and 2

students for investment funds

ordering materials

keeping accounts using a spreadsheet

advertising the product

setting up a stall at Market Day

calculating profits and producing a written report at the

end of trading

Information of total profits from all businesses and the nominated charities will be posted in the next newsletter. Thank you to all the students and staff who supported this venture. It was a resounding success, with many happy customers.

STEM- ROOM 8 We have been learning about

Natural Disasters in our STEM unit this year.

Now we are pulling all of our knowledge to find all of the problems connected to Natural Disasters. There are a lot! We will brainstorm ideas to solve one of the problems in small groups. We have also learnt about Mimicry and Biomimicry, which is how plants and animals have adapted to survive, and how science uses nature to solve problems.

OUR TOP ISSUES FROM NATURAL

DISASTERS (excluding death

and injury)

Earthquakes - Eruptions from volcanoes - Habitat damage Tornadoes - buildings destroyed - power lines blown over Bushfires - Air pollution - radiant heat (increase temperatures) - buildings destroyed Tsunamis - contaminated food - flooding
