Newsletter #30_2017
1 September 2017
Dear Parents
So what makes for a great Matric Dance? Is it the venue, the location, the décor, the staff, the food, the music, the vibe or
the people? I would say that it’s all of the above, but especially the people.
On Saturday night, our current Matrics were treated to an evening of magic at the Grand Hotel in Granger Bay. As the sun
set over the ocean, the fire dancers came out to entertain us. The table settings were dominated by large candelabra with
real candles. The food was great as was the music, However the best part was that the staff and pupils got to spend an
evening together to celebrate the beginning of the end of the Grade 12’s school careers.
A big thanks to the Grade Heads, teachers and parents who worked so hard to create this wonderful evening.
Clothing Shop
We are pleased to announce that after a long wait, our stock of socks has finally arrived! Thank you to all our parents for
your patience.

Here follows a short abstract of each of the projects that were awarded medals at the Cape Town Regional Expo:
Gold Medal
and Selection to Take Part at the International Science Fair in Johannesburg in October.
Generation Of Electricity by Thermoelectric Energy
by Cheyenne Rhoda.
The purpose of the project was to demonstrate how thermoelectric energy can be used to generate electricity. This was
achieved by building a thermoelectric generator that makes use of the Seebeck Effect. This is the phenomenon where a
current is generated by a temperature difference. The model is an aluminium thermoelectric generator which makes use of
liquid cooling and heat from eight light candles to create a temperature difference.

Silver Medals
Does Age Affect Learning Styles?
by Monique de Korte and Alex Crane
The purpose of the project is the improve education in South Africa by changing the way information is taught. Three
learning styles were tested; visual, auditory and reading and writing via an online survey. The results showed that younger
learners learnt better visually, middle-aged people learnt better through reading and writing and older people learn better
aurally. This proved the hypothesis correct. This information can now be used to improve the way that information is taught
to people of different ages.
Home Desalination Plant
by Benjamin Heather-Clark and Caleb Thetard
A cost-effective home desalination plant was designed and built. It supplied one solution to the current water crisis.
The model was built and tested successfully. It can supply approximately 8.43 litres of fresh water at about R13,30 per day.
That is enough drinking water for a family of four per day.
Bronze Medal
Low Energy Clothes Dryer
by Noah Sparks
The aim of the project was to design and build a low energy clothes dryer which uses ambient air to dry clothes placed
directly underneath it. The design proved to lower electrical cost and energy consumption by more than half. The appliance
is relatively small and mobile. It would also cost a considerable amount less to purchase that a normal tumble dryer.

Grade 11 Raffle
The Grade 11’s have put together a very exciting raffle with many prizes well over the value of R40 000. This raffle is part of
their initiative to raise money for their Matric Dance next year.
On hearing the news of the Grade 8 Troy Ferguson, who has been diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, it was proposed by
the grade that the raffle tickets be extended to all pupils of CBHS and then 20% of the profits collected will go towards
Troy’s Family and his cancer treatment. Camps Bay Primary and Prep Schools have also agree to offer tickets to their pupils
and families to sell. The tickets are R20-00 each and a book is R200-00. Do support this initiative and books can be secured
from [email protected]

Troy's Triumph
Some of you may have heard that on Thursday 27 June 2017, The Ferguson family got the worst news that the amazing Troy
has being diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
It's going to be a 6-month journey of chemo treatment. Troy has had a Port implanted near his chest to be able to receive his
chemo which he has started. Overnight their lives changed direction. Now, it's not about school and being a teenager, it's
about getting WELL! The lymphoma Troy has, has a high cure rate and we don't doubt that Troy WILL be 100% healed after
his treatment.
He and his family are going to need all the support they can get and fund-raising will be very important. The first fund raising
initiative will be a golf day on Sunday 6th August at the Durbanville Golf Club, through a wonderful organization called
Jason Schouw Cancer Fundraiser. Below is the Letter they have put out for the day.
"This initiate was started 3 years ago by friends of Jason Schouw who himself was diagnosed with Cancer in September
2015. Jason was fortunate enough to receive treatment and he has been in remission since January 2017. He decided to make
this an annual event, to raise funds for children diagnosed with cancer in particular to assist with the huge medical expense
for treatment of such children.
The Golf Day has proven to be successful over the last 2 years with over 120 players participating on the day.
We have earmarked a 14-year-old boy Troy Ferguson as the Main Beneficiary this Year.
Troy was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma on the 27th of June. He is currently in Grade 8 and had to undergo his first
chemo on Monday the 17th of July after which his port got infected.... exactly as what happened to Jason.
This young man presently excels at Sport, namely Athletics and Water Polo and he has achieved Provincial Colours for
Athletics. Hopefully with our assistance we can take some of the pressure of the Family and let them rather concentrate on
Troy’s recovery.
We respectfully request any assistance from your side in this regard."
Should anyone want to know more about the golf day or make any donations big or small, please contact Debra Sivertsen on
073-719-2800 or on [email protected]
Please follow Troy's Story either on Facebook under Troy's Triumph or on Instagram@troys_triumph.
