Our vision: To strive for excellence by working collaboratively and respectfully with our students to build strong, meaningful connections with our community.

Your Move Team Tomorrow, Friday 13th March, is National Ride to School Day. If students use a sustainable way to get to school, like scooting, riding or walking they will receive a raffle ticket and a sticker and will go in the draw to win a Your Move prize.

Late Students Students who are late to school must be accompanied by a parent/carer, who is required to sign them in at the front office. We are currently trialling a new Passtab sign in/out system where parents/carers are required to sign students in or out via an Ipad. We are hoping to have the system up and running in the next few weeks.

Book Covering Morning Mrs Stacey is looking for some wonderful volunteers to help cover library books. Our first book covering morning for 2020 will be held on Friday, 27th March in the Library after assembly. All help would be greatly appreciated and morning tea will be provided.

Lockridge Dental Therapy Centre All pre-primary and newly enrolled students have been issued with a Dental Therapy Enrolment Form for free dental service at the Lockridge Dental Therapy Centre.

These forms need to be completed and returned to the school office as soon as possible so they can be processed prior to your child/ren’s first appointment. Thank you to those who have already done so.

If you have not received a form and your child is new at the school or you have misplaced your form, please contact the clinic on 9279 2440 and they will send you one.

Recycling Station Don’t forget we have a recycling station at EHPS where you can drop off writing instruments (items accepted are: pens, markers, highlighters and correction fluid pots - no wooden pencils), bread tags, batteries and mobile phones.

Please only place accepted items in the collection bins, which can be found in the hallway near the office foyer.

Sponsorship of our Dance, Band and Choir We would like to thank Steve Abbott from PLG Plumbing and Gas for kindly offering to once again sponsor our dance group this year. We hope you will support PLG Plumbing and Gas by calling on them if you need any plumbing or gas work carried out.

We are still hoping to find other sponsors for our choir and band. If you are able to assist or know of a local group or company that may be keen to, please let us know. Please see Mrs Miell or Ms Morgan-Cook if you are interested or require more information.

Harmony Day We will be celebrating Harmony Day next Friday 20th March, beginning with a Harmony Day themed assembly run by Room 11. We encourage students to come dressed in traditional costumes to parade on stage, students will visit other classes to view displays and teachers will conduct activities within their classes.

To make this event as successful as possible we are asking for your assistance. We would appreciate any help with the following;

traditional food prepared at home or maybe cooked at school

games that children can join in playing

stories to be told

songs to be sung or music to be played

traditional dances or performances

items representing your culture

help with writing some signs in different languages.

Please speak to your child’s classroom teacher or the office staff to let us know if you are able to help out or come along on the afternoon of the 20th March to share some of your culture. We would love to see as many parents as possible coming along to join in the celebrations.

What can I do if I think my children are being bullied at school?

Try to talk with your children about what is going on

Listen to their concerns and believe them

Be aware of your own response and react in a calm and

helpful manner

Talk with your children’s teachers and calmly discuss the

situation and some possible strategies

Encourage your children to ask for help at school if they are

being bullied e.g. talk about who they could talk to at

school, and how to ask for help.

Canteen News Our canteen has added sushi to their menu, which will be availa-ble on Thursdays commencing next Thursday, 19th March. The sushi will be delivered fresh on the day from Suisen Japanese Restaurant and will cost $5.00 for 5 pieces. Flavours available will be Teriyaki Chicken, Cooked Tuna, Vegetable or Katsu Chicken.

Chaplains Chatter Have you ever lied to protect the reputation of someone you love? Or covered up for them? Or rushed in to ‘help’ without being asked? It’s natural for us to protect someone we love, especially our children, from the painful consequences of their actions. But are we doing them or ourselves any favours? By continually rescuing them we lengthen the valley they must go through in order to come out whole on the other side. Sometimes people have to reach rock bottom before they acknowledge their need.

The trick is to know when to intervene and when not to. Sometimes trying and failing teaches more than being saved. When we cross the line between caring and caretaking, we hurt the person we’re trying to help by implying they can’t handle the truth or learn their lesson.

20c Tuesday We have two classes who only need a couple more coins before they have one from each year. Who’s class will be the winner? We will have to wait and see. Thank you to all those who have shown our Year 6 students support.

Meticulous Measuring

In room 16 we have been learning about measuring with

informal units. First we measured with handspan and

decided this was not the best way to measure as our

hands are different sizes. We have learnt that when

measuring the tool we use to measure must be standard

(the same size).

This week we measured with unifix cubes!

Dear Parent/carers,

Update on the Coronavirus (COVID-19)

General

Please excuse the length of this Coronavirus update. Hopefully future updates will be much briefer. The following information is a summary of information provided by the Department of Education (DoE) today on 11th March 2020. Eden Hill Primary School will continue to update our community as new information comes to hand or as the situation changes. We will put the information on the Skoolbag app, as an attachment with our newsletter and on CONNECT.

The Department of Health (DoH) is the lead agency in managing the WA response to the Coronavirus disease. Parents and caregivers are reminded that the DoE in general and Eden Hill PS staff in particular cannot offer health related advice or make health related decisions that do not accord with advice provided by the DoH. As lead agency the DoH provides regular Agency Advice to all government departments including the DoE.

The DoH advises that the risk of transmission in Western Australia remains low; they are monitoring the situation and the DoE is acting on their advice to take any necessary precautions for schools (students and staff). The current focus is on preparation in advance of COVID-19 and precautions that can be put in place to slow its transmission.

Attendance at School

Who Cannot Attend School?

This advice has changed in the past few days.

Students or staff cannot attend school and need to self-quarantine if they have:

left or transited through mainland China in the last 14 days, they must isolate themselves for 14 days from the date of leaving mainland China;

left or transited through Iran on or after 1 March, they must isolate themselves for 14 days after leaving Iran;

left or transited through the Republic of Korea, on or after 5 March, they must isolate themselves for 14 days after leaving the Republic of Korea;

been informed by public health authorities that they have been in close contact with a confirmed case of coronavirus, they must isolate themselves for 14 days after the date of last contact with the confirmed case.

left or transited through Italy in the last 14 days, they must isolate themselves for 14 days from the date of leaving Italy;

The above also applies to all parents/carers, contractors, visitors and volunteers on school sites.

Parents/carers and staff should notify their school if the student or staff member will be away for the isolation period and confirm the date in which they were last in mainland China, Iran or the Republic of Korea and Italy.

A medical certificate is not required to return to school. Schools will record the student absence as a “Reasonable”. Staff who are required to isolate and are well, may work from home and not take leave.

Who Can Attend School?

Students or staff who have travelled to or transited through other countries (excluding Mainland China, Iran, Republic of Korea and Italy) can attend school. If students or staff display symptoms (see information below) they should not attend school and should seek medical advice.

Higher Risk countries as of today include:

Mainland China

Iran

Republic of Korea

Italy

Moderate Risk countries as of today include:

All other countries

The most up to date list can be accessed at: https://www1.health.gov.au/internet/main/publishing.nsf/Content/ohp-covid-19-countries.htm

Preventing the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19)

There are practical and proportionate steps that can be taken to prepare in advance of Coronavirus and precautions that can be put in place to slow its transmission.

The DoH advises that the best way to protect yourself and others against Coronavirus is to practise good hygiene. Following this advice staff and students should:

Wash their hands frequently (for at least 20 seconds) with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand gel. This will kill the virus if it is on their hands;

Refrain from touching their eyes, mouth and nose;

Cover their nose and mouth with a tissue or flexed elbow when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of the tissue immediately into a rubbish bin and clean hands as described above. By doing this staff/students are less likely to contaminate objects or people that they touch;

Avoid close contact (maintain a distance of at least 1 metre) with anyone if either they or the other person has a cold or flu-like symptoms. NB: Students and staff with cold or flu-like symptoms are requested, as per normal practice in our workplace, not to attend school.

Face masks

WA Health does not recommend the use of face masks for the general public to prevent the risk of contracting Coronavirus.

Staff or Students with Coronavirus ( COVID-19 ) S ymptoms

People with Coronavirus may experience:

fever;

flu-like symptoms such as coughing, sore throat and fatigue; or

shortness of breath.

If a student/staff member has travelled or transited through China, Iran, Republic of Korea or Italy in the past 14 days AND has respiratory symptoms such as a sore throat, cough, shortness of breath or fever, they should call their GP or call the Coronavirus Health Information Line on 1800 020 080 and advise them of their symptoms and travel history.

If a student/staff member is attending a GP or requires urgent medical assistance at an emergency department, they should telephone ahead and tell them that they have been to China, Iran or Republic of Korea and Italy and are unwell. This will prevent other people at the health service potentially being exposed.

If a student/staff member does have Coronavirus symptoms and has had possible exposure to the virus, they should not attend school or work until they have medical confirmation that they do not have the virus.

At Eden Hill PS we always recommend that any staff or student with cold or flu like symptoms should stay home and rest. Naturally in the current situation any staff or student with these symptoms should seek medical advice if the symptoms persist or get worse or if they meet any of travel conditions mentioned above.

Support and Advice

Further information is available at www.healthywa.wa.gov.au/coronavirus or the healthdirect helpline on 1800 020 080 for more information on the virus and its symptoms.

Some Final Points from the School

Sick students will be sent home - As per usual practice, parents of sick students will be asked to collect them from school. This is nothing new but if your child is unwell please do not send them to school.

School Coronavirus Updates will be provided via CONNECT, the Skoolbag app and in the Newsletter

As you appreciate this is a rapidly evolving situation and I think the best we can do for our community is to clearly explain what we are doing at Eden Hill PS, to address the situation remembering that we are being directed in the medical response by the DoH. The school will continue to update our community as new or different information comes to hand.

Kind Regards

Natalie Mayho

Principal
