NIDA COREN E W S

Spring 2003

STRUCTISOThe sandwich material with triangulated linking elements

Nida-Core introduces new core designed for RTM, infusion and other closed or vacuum assisted processes.Composed of a layer of PU or Phenolic foam covered with a reinforcing fibre layer on each side, the three elements are linked together by glass fibre bridging strands which

go through them obliquely, forming triangulations in the mechanical sense. The reinforcing materials are woven or non-woven glass, carbon or aramide fibre fabrics, which are available in the marketplaceThe triangulations join the reinforcing layers to the reinforcement and are composed of fibreglass strands of 1200 or 2400 Tex. They are in 24 mm spaced lines, parallel to the longitudinal axis of the sheet for configurations with a single orientation, and at 30° to this axis right through the sandwich (thus forming an angle of 60° between each other) in the double oriented version, thus giving more isotropic characteristics.. The angle formed by the crossing strands and the faces of the sheet is between 45° and 80°. It varies with the correlation required between performance in compression and in flexion.

In an effort to further boost your customer's confidence in purchasing your product manufactured with Nida-Core Structural Honeycomb and to emphasize the value of Nida-Core products to the end user of your composite products, we hereby announce a program sponsored byNida-Core Corp. to supply FREE of charge , printed labels for your products.

We are confident , while these labels are placed in a conspicuous place, will inform the customer of the quality materials used in the construction of your product and further enhance the possibility of closing a sale ; or at least will prompt questions and allow a perfect opportunity to describe in detail the construction process of your product and the inherent properties of Nida-Core Structural Honeycomb that will make your product desirable.

Our Customer

We set up a test procedure that we feel betterdemonstrates the behavior of materials in an impact or rollover situation. the results ofthe three point bend test with an .125” per minute crosshead speed do not come close to representing the dynamics of an impact.Panels to be tested:

The panels provided for testing consisted of approximately 1/8th inch of chopped strand fiberglass on each side of 1” thick core with the mold face side gelcoated. The cores were a kraft paper honeycomb and Nida-Core H8PP.Test Method:3.5” high supports were located 1.5” from the ends of the panels. A 12 pound steel impacter(4.625” dia. x 2.562” thick cylinder) was dropped on the center of the panels from a heightof 72” above the panel surfaces. Results:The kraft paper honeycomb was severely compromised on the first impact with visible crushing , cell rupturing and some delamination. The first impact on the Nida-Core panel yielded only a slight surface mark in the gelcoat. The second impact on the kraft paper cored panel delaminated a skin more than 40% and further ruptured cells. After four impacts there was still no damage to the Nida-Core panel other than slight surface marring from the impacter. The panel was also “tap” tested for signs ofdelamination. There were none.

Southern California Timing Association and Bonne-ville Nationals Inc. World speed record carbuilt with Nida-Core H8PP .During recent highspeed testing at over 250mph on the BonnevilleSalt Flats the vehicle hit an abandoned automotivebattery head on at full speed. No doubt thanks to the extreme resilient nature of the Structural Plastic Honeycomb the body of the vehicle nor the driver experienced no damage whatsoverless some scratches to the painted surface finish.Another testament to the superiority of the plastic structural honeycomb technology which does nottransfer impacts from outer skin to inner skin without providing initial crumple zone with memory.
