SPECIALISM SUCCESS

All Year 7 students enjoyed an enjoyable day off timetable this week working through a range of activities linked to investigating their 'dream job'. The day started with students looking back and producing a 'timeline' recording key moments in their lives from birth until the present. After this they spent time considering jobs in the past and present, thinking about changing trends in work and assessing future developments. With these two activities completed students were ready to think into their own futures and imagine working in their own 'dream job'. The job had to be real, but could be anything from an astronaut to an engineer to a musician. Students researched real job descriptions, produced a CV 'looking into the future' and then an extended piece of writing imagining 'a day in the life of' their dream job. A great day and a great way to get Year 7 students thinking seriously about their future possible careers!

YEAR 13 FORMAL DINNER

Year 13 will be celebrating their end of studies at All Hallows with a formal dinner on Fri 8th July at the Hilton Double Tree Hotel, Piccadilly, Manchester.

A reminder to parents about coats. For years’ 7 to 9 it must be a College coat with a College emblem. And students, should in the cold wet weather, should wear them. For years 10—11 students must wear a dark coat. Parkers if any color, cannot be worn.

PARENTS AS PARTNERS: COLLEGE COATS

The College would like to express sincere gratitude to those parents who collect their children by car in the streets adjacent to the College. This is invaluable in helping the College to avoid grid lock on the bus turning circle at the end of the College day. We would ask the small number of parents who still collect from the turning circle to show their support along with other parents and pick up their children off site.

Dear Parent/Guardian I am writing with details of the reward trip that the PTA has organised for students in years 7-13. The cost of the trip is £15.00 per person and includes coach travel to and from College and entrance into Blades Ice skating Rink at Altrincham, including skate hire. You will need to register at the bus turning circle by 9.15am and we will return to the bus turning circle approx. 12.30pm. As this trip has been organised as a reward for good behaviour, it is important that only students who have upheld the college’s core values are allowed to participate. Students, who have gained behaviour points or have been in Isolation in this academic year may not be allowed to participate. Payment of £15.00 must be made no later than Friday 29th January 2016 via the on-line parent pay facility on the College website. Please contact finance if you are experiencing any technical difficulties. The PTA is keen to support all children and families and have therefore decided to subsidise a small number of

places for children in receipt of free school meals. If you would like to be considered for a subsidised place, then please email Mrs Heaton confidentially with your request on [email protected].

Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately and particularly wears long sleeves, trousers and gloves for their own protection. Medical forms must be completed and returned to Mrs Heaton in F21. Yours sincerely Mrs A. Heaton

SIXTH FORM APPLICATION

Students must sign out at the Attendance Office before leaving College to attend a medical appointment. When they return to College the student must sign back in. This ensures registers will be accurate and we know the student is off site should we have a fire alarm. The Attendance Office is located in an office along the RE corridor. We thank parents for making medical appointments, where possible, that do not take up a whole day of schooling. This often allows a student to have their legal registration mark for both morning and afternoon sessions and so their overall attendance does not fall.

MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS DURING THE COLLEGE DAY

Holidays have not been authorised since 1st September 2013 under legislation on all English schools. Requests for holidays must still be made in writing to the appropriate Key Stage leader (Mrs Garvey KS5, Mr Diamond/Mr Blades KS4/KS3), but in the vast majority of cases they will be unauthorised. A Fixed Penalty Notice may be issued of £60 per parent / carer per student, to be paid within 21 days, otherwise the penalty will rise to £120 per parent / carer to be paid within 28 days. If the penalty remains unpaid then the matter will proceed to the Magistrates Court where you will receive a criminal record if you are found guilty. Please can all holiday requests be made well in advance of the holiday being taken if not before the holiday is booked.

HOLIDAY ABSENCE FROM COLLEGE

Whilst the College requires parents to contact us on each day of absence, school policy now requires that any student who accumulates 7 or more days of absence during the course of the academic year will be asked to provide medical confirmation of the need to be absent before any further absences are authorised for medical reasons. This is a necessary measure as we closely monitor absence due to illness / medical reasons in order that we can ensure students are supported where needed. For your information medical confirmation does not have to be a doctor's note but can also take the form of a medical appointment card, a copy of a relevant dated prescription or evidence of medication being taken. If no medical evidence is provided then the absence will be coded as unauthorised. Ten or more unauthorised absences may result in you receiving a Fixed Penalty Notice. This incurs a penalty of £60 per parent / carer to be paid within 21 days, otherwise the penalty will rise to £120 per parent / carer to be paid within 28 days. If the penalty remains unpaid then the matter will proceed to the Magistrates Court where you will receive a criminal record if you are found guilty. The link between attendance and achievement is well researched and documented and students should be aiming for an attendance rate of no less than 97% over the year. Thank you for your continued support with this importance issue.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS

Over the last week of College attendance was as follows: Year 7 - 96.1% (down 1.0% on last week) Year 8 - 95.4% (up 0.4%) Year 9 - 94.1% (down 1.9%) Year 10 - 95.9% (up 0.5%) Year 11 - 94.1% (up 1.7%) Year 12 - 94.0% (up 0.6%) Year 13 - 89.0% (down 0.3%) Attendance between Year 7 and Year 11 last week was 95.1% (no change from last week and 0.3% lower than the same time last year). Our overall attendance since 2 September 2015 remains at 95.6%. We aim for 97%. Last week GIRLS attendance (Years 7-11) was 94.7% (down 0.2% on last week), BOYS attendance Year 7-11) was 95.6% (up 0.1% on last week). Since 2 September 2015 boys attendance between Years 7-11 is 95.8% and girls attendance between Years 7-11 is 95.5%.

CHANGES TO ATTENDANCE POLICY

From September 2015 the College has changed the definition of “persistent absence” we use to include those students who are under 90% attendance. This is in line with national guidelines and increases the threshold from 85% at present.

CAREERS ADVICE FOR STUDENTS

If any parent would like their son or daughter to have a careers interview with Mrs Pilling, our Careers Advisor, this year then please notify the relevant Year Learning Leader who can ensure names are added to the list. Mrs Pilling will prioritise Year 10-13, but students in Years 7-9 are welcome to attend her Thursday lunch time drop in. She uses the Student Support Office based next door to Music.

Most students appreciate the importance of being in College on time. Children who are regularly late do miss out on their education and form bad habits that will not be tolerated in the workplace. We need to inform parents that students must be in the registration form class for the register to be taken at 8.45a.m. This means students should arrive 5-10 minutes earlier in College to be on time. Any student who arrives after 8.45a.m. will receive a L code. Two L codes within a week will result in a whole college detention to be held each Thursday. Any student who arrives after 9.05a.m. will receive a U code. This means they will be classed as absent for the whole morning and this may have consequences for overall attendance. We are aware that College buses are sometimes late and we can confirm these students are not negatively marked in the register when this happens. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter. Gates are manned by members of staff and names will be taken of those students who are late.

Macclesfield Football Academy – Training Match For New Recruits Last Friday (22nd January 2016) saw future academy programme players come together from high schools across Cheshire to play in an away fixture at the Platt Lane Complex in Manchester. The young year 11 players performed brilliantly to win the game 3 – 2 with a dominant team display. The match saw the MFA players start strongly with high levels of possession. It wasn’t too long before striker, Sam Ashton pounced on 14 minutes with a great side-footed finish from six yards out. The assist came from a smart cross from the right hand side by Scott Dinsley after he made a far post run to get on to an over hit corner. Will Pickford got the second of the game on the 28th minute after following up from a long range shot that was by the opposing goalkeeper. spilt HALF-TIME FETA Manchester 0 vs. 2 Macclesfield Football Academy FETA Manchester started the second half much stronger and started to cause more problems to the MFA backline. The home side were back in the game after 52 minutes when a goal mouth scramble saw a goal fly in to make it 1 – 2. Aidan Ramadani in the MFA goal pulled off a few excellent saves to keep the away team leading. 75 minutes in saw Jack Bennett increase the lead with a well taken goal which was well deserved after a good performance all game. 1 – 3.

FETA kept in the game and made the last 10 minutes tense after they scored a great goal from the edge of the penalty box. 2 – 3. However, MFA held strong with some stand out performances, most notably from Scott Dinsley in central midfield and Josh Churchman at right back.
