Term 3, Week 6 August 23, 2019 Go the extra milo Principal's Editorial Some years ago when my own children were living at home we regularly made our way to the snowfields to burn off some excess energy. So while skiing in the Australian Alps and taking the chair lift to the summit, I noticed the advertising signage on the chair in front – ‘Go the extra Milo.’ Obviously a great advertising line for a kid’s drink (in which I have no shares or interest!), but at that time it got me thinking about the original expression that we have in the English language – ‘Go the extra mile.’ (Also I have been recently reminded of this by an excellent chapel presentation – thank you Mr L.) During the time that the Romans ruled the world (168 BC – 476 AD) they put into action many plans and their legacy can be found in roads that are still used today, the engineering and plumbing achievements and also the system of law and order that is used in many parts of the world today. One ancient law allowed a Roman soldier to make a person carry his backpack for a Roman mile (approx. 1.48 km). Of course, no one liked this law particularly the Jews who were upset at the Roman invasion and control of their land. In His famous ‘Sermon on the Mount’ Jesus took the opposite attitude when He made the comment that ‘whoever shall make you go a mile, go with him two. (Matt 5:41) It is from here that we get the phrase ‘go the extra mile’ meaning that we should go beyond what is expected of us when we are helping other people. That could even mean providing a hot cup of Milo to someone in need, however the opportunities to assist are endless and only limited by your imagination It’s worth a thought. So while skiing in the Australian Alps and taking the chair lift to the summit, I noticed the advertising signage on the chair in front – ‘Go the extra Milo.’

Nurturing Young MindsParents: Be A Mentor, Not A Friend

Permissive Parenting or Pendulum Parenting

Permissive parents, though they may be warm and responsive, may lack control, tend to be traditional and have fewer rules or boundaries compared to authoritarian and authoritative parents. Thus, children of permissive parents are left to self-regulate their behaviours and emotions. Allowing children to regulate their own activities as much as possible and not insisting on obedience may lead to impulsivity.

Pendulum parenting isn’t technically a parenting style but a pattern of parenting where parents are generally permissive but occasionally correct their position during times of stress to being authoritarian and punitive. The parent may tolerate undesirable behaviour until a crisis hits and then serves consequences by removing all of their devices until further notice. This sometimes results in the child decreasing their level of respect for the parent because they know they won’t follow through on what they say, and as such they learn that there are few lasting consequences for their actions.

Research tells us about outcomes for groups of people, not individuals. Each parent must decide for themselves which style is best for each child.

Slow Down Please! As you enter the College ring road please take extra care and slow down to 15kmph. When approaching any of the two pedestrian crossings be prepared to stop.

A pedestrian has a 90 percent chance of survival if hit by a vehicle moving at 30kmph. This decreases to 70 percent at 40kmph and less than 20 percent at 50kmph. Driving at lower speeds also enables drivers to stop within a shorter distance.

Thank you for for doing your part in keeping our children safe.

Secondary News

Inter House Table TennisThis Tuesday saw the top Intermediate Boys for each House take to the table in a series of table tennis matches. The team format consists of four single and two doubles matches as each House competes to win the majority of the 6 matches.

This event heralded some big matchups with Asam and Alec representing the number 1 rank position for each respective House and ending with all three sets finishing with tie breakers and Asam managing to get the win. Their match was one of four matches that had to go to a third set in this series, however Barnett could not be stopped overall as they went on to take out five of the six matches.

Corliss has their chance for revenge when the Spikeball series commences.

Staff vs Students: Boys BasketballThe boys match took place on Monday this week as Sam led the students in an attempt to topple the teachers. The under manned teachers' side managed to survive the full game without a break and win 16-11.

The match was tough as each team not only had to worry about one another but the relentless wind which added to the degree of difficulty. The next matchups will be announced shortly after the Sport Captains meet with Mr Starrett late this week to plan the Inter House and Staff vs Student events for the remainder of the term.

Staff vs Students: Girls BasketballThe first of the basketball matches for the Staff vs Students competition took place last Friday. The outlook for the day was bleak however the weather held off and the match went ahead as planned with Garmai leading the students against the teachers in an attempt to secure another win following on from the last Table Tennis event.

Goals were exchanged between both teams and the scores were tied up for a significant period of time. However Mrs Maclean's height and sharp shooting ability managed to give the teachers a lead in the dying minutes of the match. The scores at the buzzer were 14-10 with the teachers taking the win.

Great work to the students for the well fought match and great work to the staff for the win!

SSV Table TennisThis week our representative teams from Year 9 and Year 10 journeyed to Coburg Table Tennis Centre where they competed against other schools in the Whittlesea Division for their annual competition.

With many months of training and practice under their belts the students went into the day aiming to win as many matchups as possible. The boys team had a particularly close matchup with Epping and unfortunately lost a few matches in five sets going to tie breakers, putting the boys in 2nd place for the day. The girls team had great success after they walked through the competition and faced Thomastown at the end of the day where some hard fought singles comebacks and dominance in the doubles format saw the girls take out the competition.

Great work to those who represented the College and particularly to our Champion Girls who go on to compete at Regionals next term.
