the two sessions lasting 5 days had a record attendance

    of 150+ delegates.

We have drawn up ambitious plans to scale up our

activities, improving quality and content with added

emphasis on deliverables in providing value added

    services and programs.

We are also planning to conduct frequent development

programs in India jointly with SAE International. The

focus will be on the entire fraternity including practicing

engineers, students, faculty members, policy makers and

    government officials involved in execution.

We are addressing an important need i.e.

communication by commencing this quarterly e-Bulletin

which will provide a synopsis on members, recent events

and a peep into technology trends.

We envision ourselves to grow at a much faster pace

providing valuable service to our members who will help

them in their careers and achievements. India is on a

growth path and hence this is not an impossible target to

achieve. However, everyones participation in achieving

this goal is vital. I would personally request every one of

you to communicate your ideas for achieving this

growth, which will go a long way in firming up our future

    programs.

We trust that you will find this relevant, informative and

useful and would appreciate your constructive feedback.

    Warmest Regards,

    Shrikant R. Marathe.

    International Lecture Series by

Dr.William Mark McVea, P.E.The Basics of I nternal Combustion Engines

This two-day technology survey seminar covered, quite

comprehensively, the most relevant topics - ranging from the

chemistry of combustion to the kinematics of internal components of

    the modern internal combustion engine.

This session discussed in detail the basic functioning and component

interaction in a modern internal combustion engine, specifically, two

and four-stroke cycles as they relate to reciprocating and rotary engine

designs including the general thermodynamic concepts governing the

operation of an internal combustion engine and its various cycles. It

also compared the principle operational differences of the various fuels

used in internal combustion engines, their availability, covering

functions and operations of all major components and systems within a

modern internal combustion engine. Apart from these, the delegates

had the opportunities to identify the operational principles behind the

timing and working relationships among all internal components, and

articulate the importance of this inter-relationship, recognize the

limitations of the current designs and implementations of the modern

    internal combustion engine.

    Internal Combustion Systems: HCCI, DoD,

    VCT/VVT, DI & VCR

This seminar gave exposure to the emerging technologies in engine

design and operation that can significantly improve operationalefficiencies. The fundamental science and implementation technology

of the various internal combustion engine systems were presented.

It listed the typical sensors, the sensory information they collect and

described the use of that information as it addresses improved fuel

economy and reduced combustion emissions, significance, technology,

and application of Direct Injection (DI) of both gasoline and diesel fuels,

Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI), Displacement on

Demand (DoD) Systems, Variable Cam Timing (VCT), Variable Valve

Timing (VVT) and Variable Compression Ratio (VCR) engine designs.

The session explained in detail the fundamental physics of the various

technologies and specified the operational parameters and

interrelationships of each of the sub-systems of the enabling hardware.

It also threw more light on basic design synthesis and analysis

techniques for major operational improvement technologies.
