Newsletter April 2012

FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR

Hello again,

Despite an improvement in our LAG safety indicators, we continue to be concerned at the number

of unplanned incidents occurring in the workplace, particularly damage events. It has also been

noted that the number of planned task observations has dropped off and is below target levels at

all sites.

The carrying out of planned workplace inspections and task observations as well as engaging and

empowering all employees in the process of identifying, reporting and eliminating potential haz-

ards is the key to maintaining a safe work environment. I ask for everyone’s commitment to in-

crease the level of proactive vigilance and action in this regard.

Following on from my comments in the last newsletter, we continue to plan the development and

improvement of our training systems. The key elements comprise;

Training and competency to nationally accredited standards. GBF will soon be transition-

ing all training modules and assessment criteria to the national certificate in metalliferous

mining program. Under the supervision of an independent registered training organisation

GBF will be offering all employees the opportunity to gain recognised national qualifica-

tions.

Specialist trainers. GBF will be engaging specialist trainers to ensure that all training is

done by employees who are deemed safe, competent, efficient and highly motivated.

Such trainers will travel from site to site across the organisation. If you are interested in

becoming a specialist trainer please lodge an expression of interest with your supervisor.

Increased audio visual teaching. GBF will take advantage of developing technologies in

this area and incorporate video libraries for employees to access at home in order to ad-

vance their learning in a more efficient manner and video recording of competency as-

sessments to facilitate more effective analysis and constructive feedback to employees.

Performance measurement and benchmarking. GBF will commence detailed measure-

ment of the performance of each employee. This will assist in identifying training priorities

and improving the individual performance of each employee and the collective improve-

ment of key business drivers.

Personal training passports and centralised training record management. Each employee

will be issued with a passport and will be responsible for recording all training activities

performed. The training and competency records will be maintained centrally and easily

transferable between sites and available for employees should they leave.

The above initiatives will be rolled out progressively over the next 12 months.

Existing contracts continue to perform to expected and sustainable levels and GBF remains focus-

sed on priority servicing of existing clients and is also well positioned in terms of its capacity to

take on additional growth opportunities beyond Scuddles, St Ives and Dargues Reef.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT SCUDDLES

I have been asked to give an update on Scuddles, with the last one being sub-

mitted a few months ago,. I thought about the site and noted that almost every-

thing had changed, staff, manpower, equipment and mining conditions. Al-

though one thing remained the same—our commitment to safety. The Scud-

dles operation is now over 140 days TRI free and it is pleasing to be involved at

a site with a strong commitment to it’s employees well being. A job well done

by all at Scuddles.

The mine itself continues to perform well with an average of 280 metres achieved per month and

a growing ore hoist achievement. A good last couple of months with notable achievements includ-

ing:

Major work completed on the trucks so they can average over 220tkm/hr!

Ventilation upgrade throughout the mine—one more of the challenges faced by the

underground employees with remnant mining.

A successful copper campaign with everyone gearing up for a well planned Zinc cam-

paign set to commence in May,

Plenty of shaft work coming up for our services team to sink their teeth into, and

Thesis underway by Rodney Atkin-Smith Jnr on increasing the productivity of DR031,

some very interesting results thus far.

These remain exciting times ahead for Scuddles with a big push on capital development and more

streamlined crew structures.

Recruitment is fairly quiet around GBF at the moment in readiness for Cortona with only two

new recruits to come on board. We have been advertising and interviewing for two roles the

Document Controller/Programmer who will assist Paul White with CMO and other IT related

projects. The other role is a Maintenance Planner who we have tirelessly tried to fill since last

year and finally found a suitable candidate just this week. After successful pre-employment

checks both candidates will commence in mid May.

Please be reminded of HR responsibilities when managing staff or needing assistance.

OTHER PROJECT UPDATES

Paul McCreed has managed to experience some travels with his work and involved himself in some rather interest-ing projects locally and overseas.

These proved successful and he has taken some time to produce the following power points for your benefits.

In fact our Perth office used them in the monthly toolbox safety meetings to show how safety plays an integral role in all the work we do. Click on the following links to view—any problems viewing please contact Paul White for as-sistance.

Bright Blue Charity

My name is Marcus Rader, I recently left the WA Police and now work for GBF Mining at Golden Grove. Over the past two years many of you, especially GBF, have supported me, the Bright Blue Charity and the Wall to Wall event as we ride across the country and raise money for sick kids in this State.

Donations from friends, colleagues and corporate entities has resulted in the Bright Blue Charity handing two cheques totalling $410,000.00 to Princess Margaret Hospital in the past two years. Princess Margaret Hospital is renown across the world for is leading-edge research into childhood cancer. Donations to this wonderful cause don’t just make a difference to sick kids in this State but across the world. The unique aspect of these donations is that the monies have been used to directly purchase a: (1) 3D molecular imaging machine; and (2) confocal micro-scope. 100% of all donated monies go directly to the charity; all Bright Blue overheads are covered through corpo-rate sponsorship and the Bright Blue Board and the rider contingents undertake their charity work whilst on annual leave.

This year in 2012 we have two key charity events: (1) the Gibb River Road Postie Bike Ride in June; and (2) the W2W ride to Canberra in September. Rider contingents in both events will fund their own travel and accommoda-tions costs and undertake the ride as part of their annual leave period. This years fundraising challenge far surpasses that of the previous two years. Through reading the attached flyer you will see that we intend to raise $500,000.00 by December this year to purchase a suite of complimentary research equipment to be used in cancer research and treatment at Princess Margaret Hospital.

This year, I am sad to say, my own family has been effected by the big C, as my 4 year old nephew has recently been diagnosed with cancer. He is a little fighter, and despite weekly Chemotherapy, and being unable to swallow or eat any food, he continues to amaze us with his positive determination to fight this horrific disease. In recent years sending an email similar to this has resulted in many generous donations. My aim this year is that this email goes viral and extends out to our external friends and supporters wherever they may be in the State or across the world.

So what am asking from you?

I’m asking your generosity, your contribution through a donation to Bright Blue to supporting the children of this State both now and into the future; and I’m asking you to forward this email to your colleagues and externally to your friends contacts seeking their donation to the premier WA Police Charity – Bright Blue.

If you make no other donation this or next financial year please consider making one to Bright Blue.

Donations can be made by electronic transfer to the Police & Nurses Credit Society (see account details be-low). Once you have made your donation to P & N simply email me ([email protected]) with the date of dona-

tion / dollar amount / your full name and address and I will write and post you a receipt.

Make this your 2012 donation to charity and claim it on this current year’s tax return.

INTERNET USAGE POLICY

As with every organisation we have to be cost conscious and time conscious in every aspect of the business. In order to understand how we’re using the internet, we’ve recently implemented web moni-toring software so we can gauge how we’re using the internet, what we’re using it for, and how we can use it to benefit the organisation. The web monitoring software shows individual employees usage, sites visited, time spent surfing, downloads, uploads, top surfers, etc. As with any organisation, the typical sites like Facebook and Ebay we’re blocked quite some time ago as they tend to be a big drain on our bandwidth, and that costs the company money. A few others may be blocked in the near future, but only those that are deemed not work related and are a large drain on our bandwidth, such as streaming music or video. The internet is a valuable tool in all our jobs, plus limited personal use is allowed as long as it’s not excessive. As a GBF employee you need to be aware that we’re all currently using computing facilities under a corporate I.T. policy, and you will have signed a form saying you agree to work under the terms of that policy. If in doubt you can refer to those documents in the CMO document system, and if you have any queries please forward them to Paul White or Ben Broad for discussion.

What’s happening in IT at GBF—loads just check out the intranet for a start with online timesheets, HR database which is to assist with recruit-ment, Staff Locator to find where you are! And much more. Keep a look out for helpful hints and tips from Paul as he emails them quite regularly and can prove that you aren't to old to learn new tricks. Steve Williamson from Emerge is now very comfortable sitting here at the GBF offices but is currently on a well deserved holiday in the UK and due back in mid May. For any IT queries while Steve is away please contact Paul White.
