    CAFOD YOUNG LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME

On Friday 10th July, a group of nine Sixth Form students, who have been participating in the CAFOD Young Leadership Programme, travelled to London for the final day of their course. The day consisted of various activities and workshops exploring how they could extend and implement the leadership skills they have been developing over this year. They also had a tour of the super Eco-friendly Romero House, the award winning offices of CAFOD. Following these activities, the young leaders were presented with certificates for their success during the course, by the Director of CAFOD. The sixth formers, representing both St Bedes and Clifton Diocese, have shown a real concern for the environment, our common home, and taken an ac-tive role in raising awareness about the effects of climate change and CAFODs One World, One Climate Campaign.

A VISIT FROM A HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR On 13th July the History department was extremely privileged to welcome into school Mrs Joanna Millan. She spoke to the year 9 pupils and some of year 12 about her experience of living through the Holocaust. Joanna spoke about her childhood and how her family were sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau. In 1944, after her father was killed, her mother contracted TB due to the conditions in the camp, leaving her orphaned. On 3rd May 1945, the Red Cross took over control of the camp and she was liberated by the Russians. After the liberation Joanna, along with five other surviving orphans, was flown to England in British bomber planes which had been used to return Czech pilots who had been flying with the RAF during the war. After transferring through a series of childrens homes, she was adopted by a Jewish couple living in London. Joanna went on to marry a Jewish man and has 3 children and 8 grandchildren. She is a magistrate and today speaks regularly about her experiences during the Holocaust. St Bedes pupils were extremely moved by the impact of Joannas story and her words will stay with them for a very long time.

NUMERACY DAY A week after Years 7, 8 and 9 took part in the successful 'KS3 Literacy Day', the Junior Leadership Team ran the 'KS3 Numeracy Day', a second off-timetable day to develop in our young people a positive attitude towards numeracy and helping them to see its importance in the wider world. Pupils participated in a range of activities, including 'Survival Budgeting, a 'Big Quiz' and culminating with 'Equation Bingo!' in the assembly at the end of the day. We were pleased with the level of enthusiasm pupils showed for all of the activities, and are looking forward to seeing pupils utilising these skills effectively in the next academic year.

SHAUN IN THE CITY From the 6th July31st August, 70 Shaun the Sheep sculptures created by artists, designers and celebrities have been placed across Bristol for the public to enjoy. We are delighted to announce that Jasmine the sheep in Bedminster has been created by our very own Elizabeth Clayton, past pupil of St. Bedes and daughter of retired Geography teacher Chris Clayton. We are sure that many of our families will enjoy the trail throughout the summer. Have fun!

    YEAR 7 RELIGIOUS FORMATION PRIZE

Year 7 pupils have been studying Hinduism in RF this term. As part of a new initiative, the RF Department launched a new Take Away Menu homework unit on Show My Homework and have awarded a RF prize for one of the tasks completed. The creative task was to make your own Hindu Shrine and produce a guidebook for it. The response was amazing from the pupils and we hope to replicate this in the future. Congratulations to our three winners who put a lot of time and effort into an outstanding piece of work! We hope you enjoy spending your well earned prize money over the summer holidays!

Students have written to the Council members to thank them for their generous and unexpected gift.
