NEWSLETTER 2 PROJECT UPDATE:COLLECTIONS MOBILITY 2.0 LENDINGFOR EUROPE 21ST CENTURY

The European project Collections Mobility 2.0Lending for Europe 21 st century waslaunched in 2009. The aim of the project is toencourage international lending betweenmuseums by applying the latest developmentsin the area of collection mobility. The startingpoint is that collection mobility contributes toEuropean integration while retaining the

cultural diversity of the Member States. As is well known, the project comprises threestrands: a training programme, a handbookand a website. In addition, the aim is to anchorthe project results sustainably in the museumsector. An update on points of specific interestfollows.

THE TRAINING PROGRAMME :The training programme is being set up on thetrain-the-trainers principle. Thus the knowledgegained during training is not just for the

trainees but is subsequently passed on atnational level. There have been some changes since July. The training locations were originally Madrid,Brussels and Budapest, but now Antwerp (end2010) and Budapest (February 2011) havebeen chosen as locations.

Madrid will no longer be a training location buthas taken on the organisation of the openingconference. At the end of May 2010 a selectedgroup of museum directors, heads ofcollections and culture officials will come

together in the Museo del Prado. Tworepresentatives from each EU Member Stateare being invited. Those particular people areinvited as they are in a position to keep thefocus on collection mobility and promote thetraining programme in their own countries. Ifyou would like to know more about the Madridprogramme, contact Leticia de Frutos([email protected] ) or GuillermoGonzalez ( [email protected] ), thework package leaders for this strand. They canalso provide information on the trainingprogramme.

    THE HANDBOOK:

In the meantime, the handbook is also takingshape. It was decided to produce a theoreticalhandbook divided into four parts: Context,Strategies, Museum Practice and CollectionsMobility Process. Almost twenty internationalexperts from the academic and museum worldhave been selected to contribute to thehandbook, which is to be published at the endof 2010. For more information on thehandbook, contact Susanna Pettersson([email protected] ).

THE WEBSITE:There has also been visible progress on thewebsite. The basic design has beenestablished, an address has been obtained(www.collectionsmobility.org) and now peopleare busy gathering content. The website willnot only contain literature but also publicise allmeetings and reports. It will go live inMarch/April 2010. For information on thewebsite contact Monika Hagedorn-Saupe([email protected] ).

    SUSTAINABILITY:

To make the Collection Mobility 2.0 projectsustainable in the longer term, consideration isbeing given to how information that comes outof the project can remain available, even afterit concludes in 2011. Talks are being held onthe subject with NEMO (Network of EuropeanMuseum Organisations), the EuropeanRegistrars Group and the InternationalExhibition Organisers Group. More informationis available from Marjolein Cremer([email protected] ) or AstridWeij ( [email protected] ).

As you see, the project group is hard at workdeveloping the various strands. So keep aneye on the all the museum periodicals, whereyou will soon be able to read more about thecollections mobility website as well as otheraspects.

We hope to see you at one of the trainingevents, or perhaps in Madrid.
