Dear Parents and Friends of the College,

School Review

Last week we had our school review, Maxine

Auguston, Public School Review Director and

Jarrad Ritchie, Principal Merredin College

were impressed with our college and in

particular our strong links to our community,

providing opportunities for organisations to

be involved in our school to support families.

The review will be finalised in a few weeks,

which will be available on our website for all

to read. I would like to thank all staff for

their involvement and our community

members who provided time to discuss what

we do here at MBCC.

Their final remarks as they left were ‘The

value of ‘community’ was clearly

demonstrated by all they interacted with and

our partnerships are a major success of our

college.

The passion and commitment of the college

community was evident to see and everyone

had the best interests of students in

providing successful and amazing

opportunities for their development.’

Fun(d) Run

It is great to see the results of the Fund Run

and Mud Run combined to raise funds for our

P&C to help improve play spaces across the

college. The two log jumbles have been a hit

and are being enjoyed by our students.

Thank you to the families that supported the

afternoon and helped donate to these

projects.

Well Done Leavers

The time has come around again to farewell

our Year 12 students. The celebrations start

this Thursday with a breakfast with parents

to celebrate the partnership in getting these

young men and women though

their schooling and ready to embark on their

future endeavours. We wish our leavers

every success and best wishes for those who

are completing their final exams in a few

weeks.

So Long Mr Swann

We wish our K-6 Deputy Principal, Mr Swann

all the best as he takes on his role as

Principal of Mount Lockyer Primary School.

He has achieved some great things at our

college and has been rewarded with this

fantastic opportunity. I would like to thank

Mrs York, Mrs Wallinger and Mr Jensen for

supporting staff and students in the college

as we transition this change. We have

started the process to fill the Deputy

Principal position for 2022 and I look forward

to welcoming the successful candidate to our

college in 2022.

Interschool Spelling Competition

On the 16th of September, Mount Barker

Community College hosted the Albany/Great

Southern Interschool Spelling Competition.

Thirty-one teams from around the Great

Southern competed.

The competition for each division was fierce,

with 14 teams in the Year 3/4 competition

and 17 teams in the Year 5/6s. After the 5

rounds, our two Yearr 3/4 team came in 6th

and 7th position. It was the first time

competing for many of these students. Our

Year 5/6 teams came in 5th and joint 6th

position.

All our spellers should be very proud of their

efforts. There were some extremely tricky

words, for example, nefariously and

phosphorescent. A huge thank you to our

parent helpers, Miles, Jane and Drika, who

came and marked the words after each

round. Thanks also to Mr Swann, who did

an excellent job of announcing the words

and keeping the competition running on

time, and Mr Fraser for welcoming the

schools and presenting the trophies. Special

mention to Ms Reynolds who kindly allowed

us to use the Performing Arts room and Mr

Thomas for assisting with the technology.

Congratulations to all our spellers and to the

huge number of students who participated in

the elimination rounds. Hope to see you try

out again next year!

Mrs Wallinger – Year 1 Teacher

Orienteering Camp

On Thursday the 9th of September, our

Outdoor Recreation Class went camping

here at the school…well glamping at least.

Around 25ml of rain meant that our

campsite wasn’t viable and instead we opted

to do the camping in the A Block. Students

still cooked outside and completed all their

orienteering courses however it wasn’t all

bad that we got to stay dry inside during the

night.

The orienteering started with a hotly

contested school course that was eventually

won by Cameron Walsh (boys) and Olivia

Williss (girls). The enthusiasm didn’t really

carry on to the second race on the farm

however with ankle deep water throughout

the paddock and the majority of students

choosing the slow and steady method rather

than the splash and dash.

The team event was a shortened course with

a public health warning meaning that we

couldn’t run through the reserve. The course

was full of glorious mud and the students

had a ball locating marks through two

paddocks. After around an hour and a half,

it was team Olivia, Cameron, Renee, Cody

and Addison just ahead of team Zara,

Crystal and Bec by about 20 seconds.

Cooking was a highlight of the camp with a

mean “mongrel mix” created for the evening

meal out of canned goods and a solid helping

of mashed potato. It turned out a lot better

than we expected and it was all polished off

by the teenage boys that we had on hand for

that very purpose. Desert was loaded

damper with marshmallows and chocolate

chips, created by our campers. By all

accounts, it was a huge success.

All in all we had a great camp with lots of

laughs. It gave students a chance to put into

practice most of the skills that we had learnt

throughout the term and they all had a lot of

fun getting covered in mud. Thanks Miss

O’Connell for her support and to all of the

students who came along. You guys made it

a great camp.

What's Been Happening in HaSS

The Humanities has been very busy this

year, with a number of excursions and incursions happening in Term 2 and 3. A big thank you must go to Mrs Taylor, Ms Grylls,

Miss White and Mr Hawker for organising and running the many and varied events.

Year 8 - Medieval Banquet. Students spent a term looking at the Medieval World and the Black Death. So to finish the term we put

together a medieval feast with fun events including jousting, archery, sword fighting,

best dressed as well as a pig on a spit. The pictures pretty much speak for themselves. Well done to all those who participated.

We also studied natural environments and

hazards in Year 8 with some students getting down to Albany for a short excursion to look

at landforms. However, many took advantage of the opportunity to make a landscape or earthquake cake. Certainly

appreciated by students in class and the teachers. Perhaps not so good for the

waistline but great for creativity. Year 7 students spent time studying Ancient

Egypt which culminated in a WOW day at the end of the term, where students dressed up,

showed off the games they created and had a magnificent feast. It is good to see students showing some pride in their work

and their efforts are to be congratulated. Year 7's also went to Rottnest for a week but

that is a story for another time. Year 10 students have been doing some

work around the College trying to create more spaces for students to hang out during

breaks. Helping Mr Bedford out with the Science gardens as well as trying to finish off the mountain bike pump track has seen a

number of students look super busy. Next term we are hoping to get our partnership

with the Shire parks and gardens crew up and running as well as a new project with some if the Shire's senior citizens. After all

we are a community College!

Tomorrow Man/Tomorrow Woman

During week 9 of last term all of our Year 10,

11 and 12 students were lucky enough to have a two-hour Tomorrow Man or Tomorrow Woman session. This is the

second time we have run these courses for the boys – so they were extended on what

they learned before. While it was the first time the girls were able to participate. Rhett and Delwyn came down to work with our

students around the concepts of old-school rigid gender stereotypes, resilience, self-

confidence and build peer support. Students were provided with tools and skills to build stronger connections between one another

and those they care about. Participants were enabled to express their authentic selves,

free from the limitations of society’s expectations.

The staff who attended noticed the following things:

• Our Year 12 boys talked about good influences on their lives and

appreciated other students for helping in the discussions. The students appreciated the open and accepting

environment – Mr Wes Beck

• The Year 11 girls were encouraging and supportive of each other. This has extended past the time of the talk and

into their other interactions; which is good – Mrs Jade Maiolo

• Coming from a student social work

perspective the Tomorrow Woman

workshops held at MBCC were fantastic. The workshop was based

around bringing girls together to have a conversation around what it means to be a woman in 2021 and to

encourage the girls to be able to speak up and make a change if they

feel the need. At times it was challenging because there were times that emotions came to the surface as

feelings were discussed, but it was a safe and accepting environment for

this to happen. I took a lot away from this workshop, that I hope to be able to put into my future social work

practice – Mrs Bronwyn Waddington

The biggest THANK YOU goes to the Mount Barker Lions Club for again providing

funding to help make this happen. The Lions Club stepped up to ensure we were able to

provide this opportunity for our senior

students of both genders. We look forward to being able to offer the next in the series

of workshops next year

The EC classes are doing something a little

different. They are doing a tea towel

fundraiser which will feature a compilation of

all EC students and their “self-portrait”.

Gorgeous!
