The hall was packed to capacity. We estimate that we had an excess of 700 adults and hundreds of children! In the Main Hall, Ms Hughes gave an address emphasising the opportunities available to the pupils who attend St. Bede’s both academically and through the co-curricular programmes. Ms Hughes also spoke about how the character and spirituality is developed in each individual. Guests were invited to go around the school, talk to our children and see if there was a match between what she had said and what they saw. Parents and their children then had the opportunity of visiting all areas of the College, including our new Sixth Form block, to see work in the range of subjects offered. They were very complimentary about the environment, the overall level of resourcing and the articulate and engaging pupils. A number of visitors were overwhelmed with the pride the children had for their school, their enthusiasm and confidence. Additional Information forms for prospective Year 7 pupils must arrive in College by 31st October 2014. Parents must also have submitted the Common Application Form to their local authority by that date. CLIMBING HIGH! Congratulations to Hannah Slaney for getting through to the Semi-Finals at the Youth Climbing World Championship in New Caledonia, just off the Coast of Australia. Hannah was placed 13th in the world. Hannah has been climbing since she was 8 years old, she was selected for the GB lead climbing team in April 2014 and is the current BMC youth climbing series champion. Her enthusiasm, strength and determination have paid off. Despite her achievements and great heights Hannah is always ‘down to earth!’ Well done. We are indeed very proud of her success. DRAMA PRODUCTION Next Wednesday pupils from Years 8-11 will be performing a version of Willy Russell's Blood Brothers. Year 12 and 13 Performing Arts Btec students have been preparing set, costume, lighting and sound effects. It really has been a whole college effort. Tickets are on sale at break times in school, and will also be available on the night. Prices are: £4 Adult, £2 Child/Concessions and £10 family of 4. We would love to see you there for an evening of theatre, hilarious comedy and high tragedy. To all cast and crew... Break a leg! • EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES Following on from the success of last year's European Day of Languages, the Modern Foreign Languages Department have organised another day of activities this year which is hoped will continue to raise awareness of other cultures and celebrate our rich diversity. With the help of staff from across the college, there will be a short video showcasing the many and diverse languages spoken by staff outside of the Modern Foreign Languages department. Activities include an international cafe run by our year 12 language students; a lesson in salsa run by a Peruvian teacher and a French film. There are 2 competitions and prizes to be won. Year 7 and 8 have been set the challenge to design a poster to promote the day on the theme of friendship. The second competition is for the whole school and involves some detective work to find 5 French or Spanish idioms and work out their English equivalent. We hope it will be an enjoyable and enriching day for all involved. ART COMPETITION Pupils from St. Bedes have been invited to participate in the latest John Lewis competition Celebrating 150 years of Clifton Suspension Bridge. The deadline for the competition is this Friday. Good luck to all pupils entering the competition.
