WELCOME BACK Welcome to the 2015 school year. We have had a very smooth start to the year with all students (and teachers) settling back into routine. Our 68 new preps commenced on Monday without any tears from children or parents. The transition program at the end of term 4 seems to be very effective and our new students are feeling comfortable in their new environment. The new students met their grade 3/4 buddies on their first day who spent time with them in class and looked after them at recess. Thank you to our Parents & Friends group who put on a morning tea for our new parents. KEEPING IN TOUCH It is important that families receive up to date information about school events. There are several ways to keep up with things.

If parents have a concern the school has a process that we would like you to follow. As the school continues to grow it is vital that you assist us by following this process. The first person you need to talk to about any issue is your child's class teacher. If the teacher is unable to resolve the issue you will be referred to the year level coordinator (see staffing table), some issues will be then directed to the Assistant Principal or the Principal.

OSHP (OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS PROGRAM)
Welcome everyone; I hope you had a great break.
As most parents are aware, the school has had a huge number of enrolments and many of
them are requiring childcare. I have tried my best to accommodate everyone but
unfortunately a few have missed out on their preferred days. I have applied to the Licensing
Board for more places and hopefully we will be notified soon. There are still a few vacancies
for Mondays and Fridays.
The program requires ALL parents to notify the program by 7.30am if their child will not be
attending the service on their booked days. This will allow us the opportunity to let people on
the waiting list know, or for an emergency. The program number is 9354 9989 or email;
[email protected] there is a 24hr phone service. Please do not rely on the
school office to inform the program that your child is not at school. Unfortunately parents are
no longer able to call the office and assume there will be a space for their child to attend the
program on the same night.
All enrolment fees must be paid by Friday 13th February, otherwise your place may be
given away. The enrolment fee is $30 per family. The office can take it as long as it is cash
and in an envelope with the parent and child’s name on it
All children using the program MUST have a hat; it doesn’t have to be a school hat but it
must be left at the program throughout the year. Please insure that the hat has the child’s
name in it, sharing of hats is not encouraged. Hats must be worn for all outside play.
If your child rides a bike or scooters to school and requires it to ride home from the program,
the child must be responsible for collecting it. We will ensure it is collected at the end of the
day if the program is notified. We will no longer be opening the shed if your child forgets.
I have had many parents asking about pickups, drop offs and fees. The school car park in
Bishop St may be used for picking up and dropping off of children using the program. All
children must be signed in and out. An account will be sent via email fortnightly.
Unfortunately we do not have the facilities to do direct debit or bank transfers. Our method of
payment can be cheque, cash, EFTPOS or Credit Card (min $10.00) The program provides a
snack to all the children attending the service.
If anyone has any concerns or questions please feel free to contact us or pop in.
Thank you

MUSIC NEWS
COBURG NORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL COMMUNITY CHOIR
This year we start an exciting new development with the formation of the School Community Choir. This is a choir open to the parent community of Coburg North Primary School. The choir will sing a variety of songs in different styles and will meet on Tuesday nights in the Music Room from 7.30- 9.00pm. I think it could be a great addition to our vibrant school community. I’d like it to try it out this term to gauge interest. I envisage that when the choir is ready it will perform at the Farmers Market or some other community event. There will be a charge of $80per term. If you are interested in singing email me at [email protected]. If we get enough people, we could start on Tuesday 10th February. Stephen
PARENT FLAG MONITOR
We are looking for a responsible parent who would
like to raise the Australian flag on the flagpole
outside the office on Monday mornings and lower it
on Friday afternoon each school week. Anyone
interested please see the office staff.
SECONDHAND UNIFORM STALL On Monday 16th Feb from 8.45 to 9.30 am (with a break for assembly), a second hand uniform stall will be held in the hall. All items $2. You can donate any clean used items of uniform by taking them to the office.
7 06/02/2015

BULLY STOPPERS: BEING COOL ONLINE
School and stakeholder newsletter/website content
Students achieve their best at school in safe and supportive environments, where they are free from bullying and disruptive behavior. We put a big emphasis on making sure we provide a great environment for our students – one that promotes tolerance and is inclusive, harmonious and free from bullying.
We can work towards this goal through education in the classroom, intervention in the playground and a focus on promoting positive behavior.
However, with the rise of social media, bullying now occurs online, as well as in person.
Cyberbullying is just as harmful as face-to-face bullying, and online actions can have real life consequences.
Cyberbullying is an increasing issue in the wider community – and the best way to tackle it is for schools, students and parents to work in partnership.
Coburg North Primary School is supporting the Victorian Government’s Bully Stoppers campaign – which has just launched a new series of tools and resources for parents and students to support students in preventing cyberbullying and how to practice Netiquette. Available from 10 February, students in years 3 – 12 are encouraged to participate in an online quiz hosted on the Bully Stoppers website, where they will learn more about how to be good net citizens and go into the draw to win an iPad as well as other prizes for our school.
These resources, called Bully Stoppers: Being Cool Online, are available on the Bully Stoppers website, at www.education.vic.gov.au/bullystoppers - visit the site to find out more.

Although these books are generally required at school on Monday’s and Friday’s, they should come to school each day. It is each student’s responsibility to care for and record in these books. Homework: We ask that students are reading on a nightly basis. Spelling words should be practised in both isolation (learning individual words) and in context (with sentences for meaning). Any other homework we set will generally be hands on, fun revision activities that just reinforce skills being learnt at school.
