DATES FOR YOUR DIARY 23 rd May END OF TERM 5 2 nd June START OF TERM 6 – WEEK A 13 th June Final day of A/S Exams End of new lunchtime period YEAR 10 FOOTBALL TEAM ACHIEVE UNIQUE TREBLE The Year 10 football team added the Gloucestershire County Cup to the Bristol & South Gloucestershire League they had already won this season. They played Newent from the Forest of Dean who were the Cheltenham, Gloucester, Stroud and Dursley champions. Goals from Callum Gundry-White, Elliott Soodeen and Leevan Uhlyk secured a 3-2 victory. The unique treble was completed on Tuesday night at the Gloucestershire Football Association Headquarters in Almondsbury when they won the Woodcock Trophy beating City Academy 4-2. Goals were scored by Emmanuel Tsagurnis, Elliott Soodeen, Leevan Uhlyk and Reuben Tsagurnis. The Woodcock shield dates back to 1907 and the boys will now have their names engraved on the trophy alongside all the other winning players. An outstanding achievement. JUNIOR MATHS CHALLENGE On 1st May, 30 of our most able Year 7 mathematicians sat the Junior Maths Challenge paper. The top 40% of students nationally receive a gold, silver or bronze certificate. Congratulations to the following pupils: Gold Certificate Michael Gowie, Hal Hewlett and Oliwia Makulec. Silver Certificate Renji Babu, Molly Cummings, Matthew Fraser, Patryk Hlond, Finley Norton and Ethan Woolley Bronze Certificate Adam Bush, Lois Fish, Jonathan Groves, Charlie Johnson, Oliwia Kowalska, Samuel Ould, Isabel Payne, Maria Reji, Mateusz Smagacz and Ciara Stables. HYMNATHON Last weekend 21 of our pupils sang for 9 hours continuously through the night to help St Peter's Anglican Church, Frampton Cotterell (where Mr Strange is Priest in charge) in their 30 hour non-stop Hymnathon. The event raised over £4,000 and the contribution of our pupils was very well received by the community in Frampton. The monies raised will go towards new ICT equipment for the Church of England Primary School and the St Peter's Organ fund. Mr Strange said he was so proud of the pupils and staff who took part; they truly were amazing!   • COMMISSIONING OF EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS This morning 16 of our pupils were commissioned as Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist in a special Mass also celebrating the Feast of Saint Bede. Congratulations to Daniya Babu, Joshua Bonacorsi, Chali Chaligha, Joseph Gompels, Abigail Gordon, Josie Goodwin, Luca Hargitai, Christymol James, Marcella Loprestsi, Tigimol Makkiel, Livin Milton, Laura Odemwingie, Tobias Olds, Annitta Regy, Maura Rolls, Mexin Sebiyachan.

    INTERMEDIATE OLYMPIAD MATHEMATICS COMPETITION Congratulations to Year 10 pupil Howard Fish and Year 11 Michael Savery who were recently selected to participate in the Intermediate Mathematical Olympiad. Howard was awarded a merit in the Hamilton competition for Year 10 students and Michael a distinction in the Maclaurin for Year 11 students. SIXTH FORM HANDOVER Handover of the new Sixth Form building from John Perkins Construction Limited took place earlier this month. Ms Hughes received the keys from Rupert Perkins. The College is delighted with the building which will be open to Sixth Form students from September.

    YOUNG ENTERPRISE On Wednesday 21st May, 10 Year 8 pupils were invited to a Young Enterprise event organised by Telefonica. The theme of the day was digital and community. Pupils had to create their own app using software from O2. The pupils agreed that it had been an interesting day and had a great time. SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION Congratulations to the following pupils who received the Sacrament of Confirmation at St Josephs, Portishead on 13th May 2014. Anna Alexander Joseph Alexander Karina Bain Luke Bain Wilson Barlow Georgina Constable Harriet Ellison TEN TORS Congratulations to Sam McGrath, James Slaney and Declan Kelly Year 9, who completed the Ten Tors Challenge at the beginning of May. Sam, James and Declan completed a distance of 35 miles over Dartmoor in variable weather conditions. Both boys enjoyed the challenge and look forward to taking part again next year. PUPILS EXCEL IN TANG SOO DO Congratulations to Year 11 pupils Imogen Fraser and Daniella Astudillo and Year 9 pupil Krispin Gardiner who won trophies at a national martial arts competition recently. The pupils were among 400 competitors at the National Tang Soo Do Championships in Nottingham. Imogen took second in her sparring round and third in forms in the Korean martial art. Daniella took third in her sparring division, as did Krispin. Well done.

  • FUTURE SCHOLAR AWARD On Wednesday 7th May 2014, 5 Year 9 pupils attended a Future Scholar Awards day at Cardiff University. The pupils were given a tour of the campus and introduced to University life and then attended two sessions in the afternoon. The first one on finances gave pupils the opportunity to buy and sell lobster pots, pay rent, lose money and gain an understanding of making money and taking a gamble. Davis John and Christin James made a profit of over 500 and won the competition. The box of chocolates went down well in the minibus on the way home! Session two was an insight into magnetism and an understanding of the laws of physics. St. Bedes was represented superbly by Davis John, Christin James, Eoin Condron, Amber Williams and Marika Niekowal. FAITHWORKS TEAM The Faithworks team visited the Little Sisters of the Poor at St Josephs Care Home in Cotham on Thursday 8th May. The day started with Mass and pupils read and served at the altar. They then entertained the residents with a wonderful concert including singing, music and indian dancing. The sisters and residents made us very welcome and we had a wonderful day. Well done to the Faithworks team who raised money for Cafod during Lent.

    SCHOLARSHIP WITH BRISTOL CITY FUTSAL TEAM Congratulations to Year 11 pupils Corey Clark, Aaron Coleman, Lewis Burden and Tom Price who have been offered places on the Bristol City Futsal scholarship scheme in September. The two year course offers 20 scholarships to young people who would like to combine practical playing opportunities with education. The boys were invited for an interview and two trials prior to gaining the places, which are dependent on their GCSE grades. The course will offer coaching qualifications as well as an opportunity to travel and play abroad. Well done. MAY HALF TERM SPORTS CAMPS During the May half term the St Bede's Community Sports team will be running a 4 day multi-sports camp. The camp will run from 9am-3pm from Tuesday 27th until Friday 30th May and is open to boys and girls aged 7-14. Those attending will take part in sports such as football, basketball, cricket, rounders and tennis.
