Game results: Warriors defeated by Flames, 48:57
If we were to have any chance of still making it into the top 4 we knew that we had to win this game against
Flames but it was always going to be a tough call. Flames were also fighting for their position in the 4 and as
evidence of how important this game was, they brought in their top shooters.
After a suffering from slow starts over the last couple of weeks I challenged the girls to play the first 5 minutes
like the last 5 minutes of a game when there is only 1 goal in it. To the girls’ credit, they did exactly that. They
broke Flames first centre pass and were quickly up 4:1. By half way through the quarter we were up 9:5, but we
then let Flames back into the game with some wayward passing. They had a 5 goal run on and we ended the
quarter 12 all.
The second quarter was a see-sawing affair with neither team able to break away. The girls worked hard to stay
in contact, putting some good pressure on the down court drive of Flames and working together to get through
the zone that Flames put on in our attack line. The quarter ended with Flames 1 goal in front.
In the third quarter Flames made changes to their attack line that proved very successful for them. Whilst there
was a lot of turn over by both teams, Flames capitalized and had a 7 goal run on in the start of the quarter. We
managed to peg a couple of goals back through the quarter but still ended up 5 goals down.
The fourth quarter was again a close affair. We made some changes in our attack line to try to freshen things up,
which had some success and the girls showed good patience and touch getting the ball into the shooters. But
wayward passing again let us down and we didn’t make the most of the opportunities we had when we really
needed them. While we ended up going down by 9 in the end, it doesn’t feel like that is a true reflection of the
closeness of the game.
I thought this was a very good team game for us. There were strong performances in all areas of the court, there
was good communication amongst the team and everyone worked hard to shut down the opposition. Most of
the time we showed patience in attack and the centre court showed some real finesse on their passing into the
circle. I thought all the shooter combinations worked well together and Amy Holliday had another strong game in
GS shooting 30 from 35. It’s really pleasing to see a number of players stringing together consistently good
games. Well done girls.

Tonight was going to be a tough game as Flames were sitting fourth, one game below us on the ladder. Our goal
was to make sure we had two options at the ball and open our vision to see both short and long options; and
where our opponents were. We needed to start the game well and work at our own pace with control, when we
had possession of the ball.
We came out firing at the first whistle and scored 6 of the first 7goals. We maintained intensity with some strong
drives through the middle of the court and at times connected well from attack. When we had two options at the
ball, the ball travelled fluently into the goal circle.
Flames came to play in the second quarter with increased intensity in defensive pressure and their attacking
drives. It was goal for goal at the start of the quarter and as we continued to maintain our defensive pressure and
work rate we were able to brake Flames in the last 5 minutes of play, outscoring them 6- 1. A fantastic effort from
all players, to maintain another solid 15 minutes and to deny Flames the impact they were hoping for this quarter.
After shooting 25/26 in the first half Stephanie Cooper came to the bench and Jenn Gibson stepped in at GS with
Richelle Newberry maintaining her position in GA. Richelle adapted well to the changes continuing to work hard
at the transverse line and into the goal circle and shot 8/9. Jenn held well to be a target in the goal circle and
finished with 8/10.
Throughout the game Richelle and Bryanna Bartel worked well at the centre pass moving through a variety of
strategies. The lack of defense in the fourth quarter from Flames in the first phase of our centre pass enabled
Bryanna to get the ball early on the transverse line and we were able to gain depth and onto circle edge quickly.
We had one defensive change with Catriona Thomson moving into GD. She was effective in denying the GA
entry into the circle and kept her to 2 attempts in the fourth quarter.
We had a great build up through each quarter showcasing the depth we have, as athletes moved from the bench
to the court and making an impact. We played four 15 minute quarters, maintained possession of the ball and
kept ourselves in the game when Flames tried to push us. Consistent defensive pressure placed on our
opponents, contributed to the turnovers we gained and the 3 or 4 more attempts we had at the post each quarter.
A great effort by all athletes, let's see this continue into the final two games of the fixtured rounds and throughout
our finals campaign.

Last night’s game was a great win for our group. We knew this would be a close encounter and it would be the team that uses momentum better, plays consistently all game, takes the opportunities at the critical time and at the time of the night – keeps focused all game.
The focus for the game was on a few things:
Looking at our on court process areas
In Defense
Full court pressure to slow the ball down before the circle edge to Larissa
Contest the first ball where possible
Big hands over and disciplined with this to build pressure
Push goal shooter out of the circle if she is high
Look at playing full court zone from any of their backlines and add in some wall c passes as per Gilly and Jess request
In Attack
Focus on 2nd phase from the C pass – options from training
Vision – see all options, be smart with these, use the ball to do the work and let it go
Timing and read the space available – drive hard through
Be aware of critical times and shut Flames out if we get a run on
The non-negotiables that need to happen no matter what
Positivity
High 5s and butt taps
Voice
Being relentless in defense
Being united at every point
I kept sending the message at both quarter and half time to really shut Flames out and don’t let them back in as this is something we need to continue to work on as a great team. The third quarter we did this well and got out to an 18 goal lead which I was very happy with. To win by 20 goals in the end was a great achievement for us. Everyone was switched onto our process and our non-negotiables where occurring throughout the game which was great. Lisa had a great game shooting at 90% and really leading our attack and goal circle. Jess Eales had a spring in her step and did a great job, Gilly had a great impact, we welcome Brooke back from her break as she had a great impact on the game, Steph Cooper really built from her game last week and was a great presence for us in GS. Numi, Ellice, Helen, Mo and Kara all played their roles. Unfortunately we couldn’t get Emma out on court this week as we are trying to qualify her for reserves finals.
