MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER

Steps to Success

On Saturday, I attended a Matric Awards Ceremony for the achievers of Metropole South - of which Springfield is a part. I accompanied one of our 2018 matrics, Helen Milligan, who proudly went on stage to receive her award in front of about 300 people. A photo on the Springfield Facebook page records her achievement. All we could talk about on the car journey home were the achievements of Kamva Goso of Intsebenziswano High School, a Gugulethu school with 1300 learners. Not only did Kamva achieve first place in the District but he returned a mark of 100% in Physical Science. An amazing achievement for someone who attended a no-fee school in a very disadvantaged area. It set me thinking about how to define success. Yes, success is the perfect ten in gymnastics, a 100% in Physical Sciences, earning selection for a Western Province side or performing a perfect piece of music. Professor Tim Noakes in his thought-provoking book ‘Challenging Beliefs’ says that success is the length of journey travelled. The journey which Kamva must have travelled to achieve those results is even more laudable than his ultimate achievements. That is why we announced the Top Ten Improvers in the Springfield 2018 Class on January 4th when the matric results were announced. We recognise their journey as well as that of the Top Ten Achievers. The girl who keeps re-writing an essay until she achieves her goal; the tennis player who works her way up from the 4th team to the 1st team; the musician who perseveres until she masters a difficult selection of music, all understand that success is a journey. An essential factor on this journey, are the mentors - parents, teachers, caring adults. Quality mentors embrace the necessity of their charges making mistakes on this journey as that is life’s way of telling us to reappraise our methods, our commitment and our desire to achieve. Mistakes are our Teachers and I urge our girls to embrace them and use them as steps to success. I have quoted Paulo Coelho in some of the parental grade meetings. He once wrote: ’The only thing which makes success impossible to achieve is the fear of failure.’ The only failure in life is not to be true to oneself. Isn’t ‘Veritas’ a superb school motto?

GRADE 9 EMS ENTREPENEURSHIP DAY

Grade 9 girls will participate in a “Banango Traders” simulation game. This

entrepreneurial skills challenge will take place in the Music Hall during normal school

hours on Tuesday 5 February 2019. If at all possible, please encourage your daughter not

to be absent or late for school on Tuesday! There is a cost of R123.75 per girl which will

be billed to your school account. A document from the Johannesburg school of Finance will be sent to parents for

further information.

DEBATING: Social debating started on Wednesday, 23rd January, and will be held after school in Room 5. It is non-competitive, lots of fun and an excellent way to improve general knowledge, confidence and the ability to argue logically and fluently. Our Junior debating coach, past pupil Brynde Kreft (Fisher-Jeffes), ranked 15th best speaker in the World University Debating Championships 2019. She is currently the Best Debater in South Africa. Congratulations Brynde – we are very proud of you! ENGLISH OLYMPIAD: if your daughter has signed up to participate in the 2019 English Olympiad, please note that the six training sessions are compulsory. They will be held on a Wednesday evening from 5.30-6.30 in the Study Hall, and began last Wednesday (23rd January). OUTREACH The Outreach Portfolio is collecting stationery for Adonis Musati who is starting a Pre Primary school. We

will be collecting until Friday and items can be put into the box in Room 10. All stationery, old books / files

etc will help.

GAP YEAR OPPORTUNITY: NET MINISTRIES

This year, NET Ministries will be sending a pilot team of seven young adults to run retreats in Catholic

schools, including Springfield. Mrs Edwards travelled to Brisbane, Australia, last week to meet the team at

their training held on the Sunshine Coast. NET is a Catholic youth

ministry gap year programme where young adults between the ages

of 18 - 30 commit to one year of living on team and running retreats in

schools and parishes. NET is active in the USA, Canada, Ireland,

Uganda and Australia and after this year's pilot team, will hopefully

run as a full year in Cape Town in 2020. Mrs Edwards served on NET

Ministries Australia in 2011 and was highly impacted by the

transformational experience she had. To find out more about this

programme, speak to her or visit the

website: www.netministries.com.au Part of training was having fun at men’s and women’s sessions. Here are the

young women who will serve on NET in Australia/South Africa this year.

GRADE 9 CAMP

Just to clarify, the girls leave for their annual camp on Wednesday 6 February and return on Friday

8 February.

PROFESSOR JONATHAN JANSEN’S VISIT TO SPRINGFIELD

Professor Jonathan Jansen was invited to make his first visit to Springfield on Tuesday 22nd January. As one of South Africa’s foremost commentators on the educational scene in South Africa, as well as a prolific author, his opinion of the school was keenly sought. He visited a number of classes where he engaged in conversation with the girls and then during the lunch break, he sat with a group of girls discussing their view of education at Springfield. Later in the week he gave a comprehensive report back to the Selection Committee who were meeting to decide on the criteria for the selection of the new Head in 2019.

BLOOD CLINIC
