It concerns the development of a new sealing gel for use in resin injection op- erations on pipes experiencing infiltra- tion problems. Previous sealing gels have always had the potential problem, particu- larly where - in certain circumstances - ground water levels fall, that the dry- ing of the commonly utilized acrylate product may eventually cause failure of the joint. So working closely together with the contracting arm of Wessex Water, Wessex Engineering & Construc- tion Services (WECS) and SDI-Unistride (one of WECS’ contractors), De Neef Conchem undertook a development programme for a new sealing gel that would not exhibit this potential ten- dency. Ultimately the collaboration pro- duced a fully laboratory and field tested product known in the UK as SewerSeal JF and elsewhere in Europe as Gelacryl SRAR. Now accepted by Wessex Water’s Technical Committee and the mate- rial of choice for WECS on joint sealing projects, the new gel was used on sev- eral jobs, such as the Monacut project in Somerset, UK. The new gel offers the ability to increase life expectancy of joint seals considerably, whilst being installed using the same technology as with previous poly-acrylate resins. The product was shortlisted for the ISTT award together with a micro mauler from Hole Solutions in New Zealand, a pipe eating machine from Airtec En- gineering, Japan and special cement mortar lining from Hermes Technology in the UK. Eventually the De Neef prod- uct won the award. See also: http://www.nodig-construction. quality waterproofing products in Australia brought the company in contact with De Neef, out of which a distributorship resulted.De Neef Conchem is convinced that the professionalism of Neoferma, its long standing reputation in the Australian market and its constant quest to be part of the latest devel-

opments in the specialized field of waterproofing is a guarantee for the Australian customers to have proper access to the products, technical support and know-how of De Neef. For further enquiries about the Aus-tralian market, please contact Una Thompson at [email protected] Australia Pty Ltd.PO Box 324, West Burleigh, Queensland 4219

At the end of October a delegation of 8 people from Shanghai Metro Corporation came from the People’s Republic of China to visit the offices of De Neef Conchem in Heist-op-den-Berg, Belgium and several projects where contractors were working with De Neef resins such as the tunnel of the High Speed Train under the central Station of Antwerp, Belgium and the metro of Paris, France.

Denepox 40 to fill the openings be-tween tunnel segments and the track bed. Metro Line 1 and 2 have been in operation for over 10 years. When visiting the site in Antwerp, Mr. Bram Cornelis, project engineer from Tucrail gave a presentation of all the

techniques used in the construction of the HST tunnels under the City of Ant-werp. This was very much appreciated by the delegation. The picture shows the group just be-fore they descended into the tunnels.

Aquatek Elastic 2C waterproofing membrane has received full CE ap-proval according to EN1504-2 for the fields of application “Moisture Con-trol” and “Ingress protection”. All relevant properties for a water-proofing coating were tested. In ad-dition to the basic required tests, ad-ditional aging tests were performed to allow the product to be used in exposed areas. Chemical resistance

CE approval for Aquatek Elastic 2Cto de-icing salts and freeze-thaw cy-cle resistance were also tested to al-low the product to be used in winter outdoor applications. The Technical Data Sheet has been adapted to include the CE mark and properties table. The full test report is available by re-quest from De Neef Conchem (Span-ish language only).

Reinforcement of Middle Ages Tower in Scheggia

Phase 2: Reinforcement of the brick work cladding (September 2006)

The preparation work consisted in drilling holes on the external side of the building at 50 cm centres, both on vertical and horizontal scheme. The holes had a drilled depth of 1.5 metres and a diameter of 32 mm. The total thick-ness of the wall interested by the reinforcement was 2 to 2.5 ml.The contractor injected Hydro Active Grout Soil.

Phase 1: Reinforcement of the foundations(April 2006)

This phase one consisted in making reinforcement injections at two different levels of the tower foundations, i.e. the first level at a 3 metres depth from ground level and the second one at a depth of 6 metres from ground level. In both cases, the contractor drilled lines of holes, where each couple of holes was drilled at 70 cm to 100 cm cen-tres and this was done both inside and outside the tower. The holes had a diameter of 32 mm and inside each hole the contractor put a copper injection hose with an internal diameter of 18 mm.The space between the hose and the hole was then filled up with silica sand up to a depth of –0.50 metres, whereas the remain void was fixed with a non-shrinking mor-tar. The injection was carried out by means of 17 mm packers from De Neef. A pneu-matic Larius type two-components pump was used to make the job. The contractor injected Rockstab 1.3.

The convention was set up to cater for all possible fields in the polyurea mar-ket, from raw material manufacturer over formulators to applicators.De Neef Conchems Group Product Manager Dominique Smits (picture above) is the chairman of the Training and Education Committee and managed to stress the importance of the harmo-nised standards, CE marking policies and the need for a joint set of stan-dards in material application, condi-tions control and surface preparation. The meeting kicked of with the widely acclaimed “Introduction to Polyurea for the Applicator and Contractor” made available through PDA US and which was presented by Sean Boeger and Dominique Smits. First Polyurea Development Association Europe Annual Convention a resounding successOn November 14th to 16th 2007, the Polyurea Development Association Europe (PDAE) of which De Neef

Conchem is a founding member organised its first annual convention under the motto “Developing the European Polyurea Mar-ket together”. The convention was held at a congress centre close to Brussels National Airport and was attended by 150 people. The large attendance was a pleasant surprise to all parties involved, especially the PDAE Board of Directors and Planning Com-mittee. It is however understandable, concerning the 15-20% annual growth of the European Polyurea Market, especially for construction projects in the Middle East and Eastern Europe.

as a Polyurea 101 and was enthusiasti-cally received. It will be a standard in-clusion for all future conventions.Further emphasis was placed on the importance of surface preparation with a nice case history presented by one of our competitors detailing techniques as well as standards. The following items that will be arranged by the Train-ing and Education Committee will be a uniform training standard for Concrete Surface preparation and the creation of a new course within PDAE.Some nice Case Histories were pre-sented by applicators and formulators including zoo animal shelters, railroad bridges in Scandinavia, landscaping in Belgium and some nice application presentations by Dudley Primaux II. He went some way to dispel the polyurea moisture myth. Moisture will not affect reaction, but it will affect bonding to the substrate. Safety was high on the agenda, with REACH and “Walk the Talk” presentations being made to make us all aware of the continued need of safe handling of chemicals

when processing or transporting poly-urea materials. The formulators were catered for by presentation on new developments in raw materials such as chain extenders and flame retardants.A well received spray and application demonstration was given at the site of a formulator close to the conven-tion centre. During the demonstra-tion as standard fast cure polyurea was sprayed on HDPE plates and in a mould to make shower cell floors. Next to the spray application, a 2-C cold ap-plied polyaspartic top coat was dem-onstrated. The demonstration focused on application, cure speed and safety, as a matter of fact, De Neef Conchem sent is spray booth to the location to ensure the public was not exposed to any spray or aerosol from the spray demonstrations.A full report was published in Urethane Technologies and Polyurethane Maga-zine International. The next event will be held at Cologne, Germany on November 19-21, 2008.

Two new brochuresIf you aren’t familiar yet with our acrylic and preventa-tive products, you can now get to know them with the introduction of two new brochures.
