From the Pastor’s Desk . . .

We learn from God’s word that Christian education cannot be effectively taught apart from Christian family life and the Christian home. If we want God’s direction for enduring happiness, for strong homes, for an effective church and school, and most of all for eternal life, then we hear God’s word and act according to what the Almighty has com-manded.

The Lord made the home the crown of creation. When eve-rything else in the universe had been made, His final act was to unite the first man and the first woman in marriage; and there-fore He set human history into motion. God gave the earth not to individuals, but to the family, and the Lord told them it was theirs to rule and re-plenish. Even though sin en-tered into the world through the home, God did not discard it, but he made the home the cradle of redemption. The promise of a savior was given through families and passed on from one generation to the next. In the fullness of time God fulfilled the promise and gave His only Son to a mother and through her to the world. This expression of God’s love is now passed on from one

generation to the next. Chris-tianity is a family religion.

It is in the home that the Lord lays the responsibility on the shoulders of parents. “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6). In this directive God clearly shows that with Him, Christian edu-cation is primarily the respon-sibility of the home.

Many parents have mistaken the idea that Christianity is completing a required course. It is regrettable that some right after confirmation shut off the supply source, their relationship to God’s word. God holds parents responsi-ble. Fathers and mothers who fail to continue in God’s word become so spiritually impoverished that they can not give to their children the power of divine truth. There-fore, it transpires that parents with a misguided determina-tion to give their children more actually end up in offer-ing them considerably less.

The full power of Christian education is seen in what Je-sus Christ has done. Jesus went to the cross to pay for the sins of the whole world.

We owed the penalty of sin, which is death. (Romans 6:23). The Bible says that our sins separated us from God. Jesus Christ the Lamb of God took our death, and He paid our debt. By faith in what Jesus has done we are saved and given eternal life in heaven. The free gift of God’s salvation is to be shared with others. This is the heart and core of Christian education. Christian education and evan-gelism go hand in hand. Be-lieving in Jesus Christ means that out of thankfulness we share Him with others. Be-lieving in Jesus Christ means to love Him with the deepest devotion and praise and thanksgiving. The light of grace goes on from flame to flame, sharing the fire. A cold candle never gave its light to another. The warmth of Christian love is best shared. God’s way of salvation is de-signed for the whole family. Actually, in Jesus Christ, our Savior, the Christian family has oneness in the greater family of saints and is in fel-lowship with God forever. Amen.

2014-2015 Confirmation Program The 2014-2015 Confirmation Program will begin on Wednesday, September 10 at 6:30 p.m. using the Pathlight “Faith For Life” (7th grade) and Pathlight “This We Believe” (8th grade) series from Concordia Publishing House. In addition each child will need an NIV Bible and NIV catechism for their personal use (these can be purchased through the Church Office).

In order to have the correct number of books needed for class we would appreciate it if you would contact the church office, 331-6579, if your child will be in either the 7th or 8th grade class. Data base information gives us the age of the children but not the current grade they are in.

A letter will be sent in advance of the start of the program. We thank you for your assistance. It is greatly appreciated!

September 2014 September 2014 September 2014 When Christ commissioned the Apostles to evangelize the world, He said that they should make disciples in all nations by means of baptizing and by teaching them everything He had commanded them to teach (Matthew 28:18-20). As the education programs of the church and state gear up again, note how God's Word speaks about teaching in our Bible Reading Schedule this month (Ezekiel 44:23; Daniel 1:4; Luke 11:1; 12:12). God's Word teaches a Christian life-style different from the sinful life-style of the world (Daniel 3 & 6). A Christian life-style is one of hearing God's Word preached and taught, confessing one's sins to God, and believing that for the sake of Christ we will be forgiven (Daniel 9:1-19; Psalm 111). It is a life lived knowing that by God's grace in Christ one will rise from death to eternal life in heaven (Ezekiel 37; Revelation 21-22).

Tuesday Morning Bible Class

Where Families Connect at Trinity

Faith legacy schedule for 2013-2014

Letters of invitation will be sent to parents of upcoming classes. Please consider coming even if you can't attend all three ses-sions. SUNDAY SCHOOL RALLY DAY Rally Day is September 6/7 at all services. In these services, youth will be involved in readings and special music. At the 8:00 service the Sunday School staff will be dedicated. At 9:15 -10:15 the Sunday School families are invited to the gym for games, activities, snacks and registra-tion.

Information for the coming 2014-2015 Sunday School year will be provided in-cluding memory books for children of grades 1-6. We are still in need of part-time teachers for preschool and a part-time puppeteer. Contact Nancy Simonson at #685-4199 or email at [email protected].

HELPING FAMILIES GROW SPIRITUALLY Faith Legacy Series is a DVD-based training curriculum to help families grow spiritually in their home. Parents meet for three 60 minute sessions with other parents of same-aged children. The sessions include small group discussion interspersed through-out the DVD teachings. When the course is completed, parents speak a personalized blessing over their child while giving the child a blessing object. This blessing event can take place in a worship service so the whole church can better support parents helping their children know, love and follow Jesus.

September 14 will be our first Sunday of Sunday School. Sunday School starts at 9:15 with children ages 3-5 meeting in the gym and Grades 1-6 meeting in the music room. We use a site rotation schedule. Children may be picked up at 10:15 in their class-rooms.

In the last several months, Trinity members have been approached while at church by people request-ing financial assistance.

Please direct them to the church office during business hours.

We have procedures and policies in place that should be followed.

If there is an immediate need, refer them to the Salvation Army which provides emergency assistance for food and shelter.

This way we can continue our mis-sion to help those in need as our resources allow.

We need your nominations for three 3-year terms on Trinity’s Lay Leader-ship Board to replace Elroy Olson, Dave Geyer and Barb Beatty.

The members of this Board will fill the elected offices of the congregation, plus provide a strong, powerful, and ethical pursuit of the congregation's mission.

We are looking for people who are visionary, good communicators, can represent the concerns of congregation, support the basics of Policy Based Gov-ernance, and uphold the doctrinal con-fessions of the LCMS.

This nomination period ends Novem-ber 1, 2014 with the election at the

HUman Care

November Voters’ Meeting.

Trinity Lay Leadership board - July 11, 2014

Present: Rev. Dr. Michael Nirva, Elroy Olson, Dave Geyer, Barb Beatty, LeAnn Fuchs, Jesse Leraas, Randy Helbling and Robert Sommers.

Pastor Nirva led us with devotions and prayer.

We discussed the idea of a salary compensation policy with Bill Kirkpatrik the Finance/Property Manager. The FOC of Barb, Randy, and Bill will meet prior to budget formulation to work on a policy.

Becky Spitzack represented the Radio Club. We discussed some concerns with video recordings for nursing homes. We re-quested to see more consistency in videos that are recorded of Sunday services. A meeting was suggested amongst the Radio Club to address this issue.

There were no changes but the addition of going through the flow chart was added to the agenda.

We held discussion of chapter 6 of our book Building Leaders. For August we are to read chapter 7.

The June 2014 LLB meeting minutes were approved with the change of Randy being excused in June.

Randy and Barb presented the FOC report. Of major note was that June saw the general funds balance increase by $7,200 after having fallen behind by about $6,400 in May – “we are doing fine”. The Shingling Project was completed and paid for, dropping restricted funds by $35,000.

Elroy led a review of the Policy Manual Review Task Calendar for the months of Jan – Aug 2015 and recorded minor changes to the calendar. Elroy distributed the Policy Manual change of 4.3.3 for inclusion in each of our PM’s. Jesse will work on reword-ing of 2.5.2.

We reviewed those Job Descriptions that have been completed in a similar format and put together by Elroy. We made some minor changes that Elroy recorded and will update to those particular forms to review in August. Dave submitted and updated the organizational chart from June which we reviewed.

We completed an LLB Self Review 2.6.2 Page 15. Elroy recorded our results.

We discussed/concluded that June tasks of: 1.5.3, 2.1.1.2, 2.10.3 Pages 4,5,10 were all accomplished.

We discussed the handout: 8 Reasons Why Most Churches Don’t Break the 200 Attendance Mark.

Pastor Nirva gave the SP report. He and his family closed on and moved into their house on July 13th. He has met with most church groups. The preaching schedule has been set and assistant pastors are helping with visitations. EMV is going well. They are going to go through a list of those who the EMV team has been unable to contact looking for ad-dresses and or phone numbers.

Our next meeting will be 12 August 2014 at 6:30 pm.

BACK TO SCHOOL: How Will This Year Be Different For You? By Edward Sowden (www.fevr.net)

New friends, old friends, nice teachers, scary teachers, a packed lunch, compulsory uniform and a fresh timetable. Going back to school is a day that inevitably comes each year. Some love it, others hate it or perhaps you just go through the motions indifferently. Regard-less of how it makes you feel you have to go, so how will you make the most of it? How will you make this year at school worthwhile? It’s time for you to step up!

School is an incredible place where you meet hundreds of young people and spend time with them 5 days a week for approximately 40 weeks a year. That presents an amazing opportunity to witness and share the gospel with so many peo-ple. In fact the best people to reach out to these students are students. The way you live and talk to your friends can be very powerful. As a Christian, school ought to be looked at as one of the ultimate

mission fields. Here are a few ways you can stand out and step up when you go back to school this year:

• MEET (Hebrews 10:25): Find out if there is a Christian lunchtime group at your school, and then join it or start one. Then bring your friends.

• TALK (1 Peter 3:15): When your friends ask what you did on the weekend, tell them about youth group or church and then invite them along. Tell your friends about your faith.

Welcome Back! Pizza Party!

It’s time to kick off another year of Youth Group! Make plans to join us for a pizza party on Sunday, September 14 at 6-7:30 p.m. in the Trinity youth room. Please RSVP for this event so we have plenty of refreshments to go around. Pizza, devotions, and other activities will fill our evening.

• LIVE (Matthew 5:16): Live like Jesus. Don’t get caught up in gossip, materialism, slander or any ways of this world. But be different and people will notice, then you can point them to Jesus.

• PRAY (Colossians 4:2): Pray for your mates, that they might come to know Jesus because prayer is powerful.

So as another year starts and the weekly cycle begins again, make a difference! Be bold and stand out for Jesus. Don’t waste the time you have now and the opportunities that come at school. Whether you are in year 7 or year 12, at a public school, private school, Christian school or secular school, Jesus died for all our sakes and he has sent us out to make disciples of all peo-ple. So why don’t you start now?!

WOMEN IN MISSION News by Jane Teschke

The August 14, 2014 WIM meeting was hosted by Marcy Mathies and Mary Ann Sanders in the Fellowship Hall with

Rev. Dr. Michael Nirva presenting the Bible Study from the Summer Lutheran Woman’s Quarterly. “Living with

Pain. What About Healing?” was the topic for discussion. Jesus does heal His children now, but understanding of

our healing needs to be broadened. Think of the image of the Good Shepherd who carries you in His arms, who ten-

derly bandages your wounds, and who will never leave you nor forsake you.

The meeting was conducted by President Marge Wilkowske with the minutes of the previous meeting and the

Treasury report approved. Reports included continued shut-in visitations to the nursing home and assisted-living

facilities, Fifty-two items and $7.00 were collected for the Trinity-Peace Food Shelf, one prayer shawl delivered to

Violet Sorgatz, made by Arlene Zielske. The disposals in the Fellowship Hall kitchen are now in working order,

thanks to the Property Board. Eighteen members were in attendance.

On August 30, 2014, a LWML (Lutheran Women Mission League) Faribault Zone Fall Delegate Board Meeting was

held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Owatonna to discuss future LWML events, as follows:

1. LWML Owatonna Conference Rally at Trinity Lutheran Church, Janesville, MN on Saturday, September 13, 2014,

9:00 a.m. to Noon

2. Women’s Inspirational Leadership Conference, October 4 and October 11, 2014 at Hosanna Highland Church

(MSU campus)

3. LWML Faribault Zone 2015 Spring Rally at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Webster, MN

We continue to encourage all members to take a mite box or deposit your mites in the large mite box on the infor-

mation counter in the narthex to support the LWML mission programs nationally and internationally. The small

mite boxes may be deposited in the large mite box or put in Box 703 (Edgar & Jane Teschke) in the Fellowship Hall.

Lutheran Church Charities has launched its new outreach ministry- Kare-9 Ministry, de-signed to serve active military, veterans and their families.

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED in identifying LCMS church members who are veterans and interested in this type of ministry. Training for dog and handler provided.

EMV (Every Member Visit/Contact) Update

Eight of ten Every Member Visit teams reported on their progress at their Aug. 11 meeting. Virgil Luehrs asked for help from EMV teams with a Stewardship Emphasis mailing at their Sept 8th meeting.

Pastor Nirva reported that Trinity will have a Facebook page with more details to follow.

A lengthy discussion was held on how to reach members who haven't attended church or taken communion for at least 5 years and who don’t respond to phone calls/letters/personal visits.

I know this all seems complicated but once you do it a few times, you realize it’s actually easy.

It's sad, especially as a church, that we need to deal with these security issues but it's because of the times we live in. As long as evil exists in the world, we must do what we can to protect our school children and God's property which we are all stewards of.

There is an eve-ning doorbell button at both the west glass narthex doors and at the west ser-vice entrance. If you are arriving during school hours, buzz the intercom button on the school doors or at the church 4th St entrance and you can be buzzed in by the school or church secretary.

If you are the first to arrive or the last to leave in the evening or on weekends you will also need to deal with the alarm system. Again, if you are unacquainted with how it works, come and see me and I will lead you through the steps. Don't be intimidated by it; it's not that diffi-cult.

But one thing you must remember is, if you are the last to leave, make sure eve-ryone else has left the building. This means a walk-around to verify no one is

Boy, I don't know about you but, for me, this summer is going by fast. School is about to begin once again and meetings and activities around Trinity will start gearing up again at the same time. Be-cause of the increase in evening activities, I thought now would be a good time to go through the basics of the security system.

If you are a leader in any committee or group, meaning that you are the first to arrive or the last to leave, then this should be of interest to you. First, you will need a key fob to enter the building. If you think you need one and don't already have one, please come and see me and I will set you up with one. Two things to remem-ber about key fobs:

1.) If you lose it, you must report it to the church right away so it can be deacti-vated .

2). Don't give it to someone else if you no longer need it; they are uniquely set up in your name and if returned to the church, they will be set up again in a new person's

Stewardship of Time, Talent & Treasure

A Connections Story

Good Shepherd, Owatonna has a Local Service team that organizes opportunities to serve in their community, and also directs a portion of their congregational tithe of offerings to local needs. The goal is to empower members to seek out opportunities to meet needs themselves.

One of their small groups helped a single mother, who has been out of full-time work for many months, to finish painting her house. It sat half done for many months.

The great thing was, members of the group were joined by nine neighbors on the street who had also been invited. One guy stopped his own remodeling project to help out. Another was paying someone to paint at his place while he was volunteering to paint with the Good Shepherd group.

Most of the neighborhood families expressed what a great idea this was, helping out someone next door, and bringing the neighborhood together.

The church bought paint and soft drinks to help make this happen.

And, sponsor support provides the critically important encouragement and tuition assis-tance necessary for seminarians to complete their preparations for the Holy Ministry.

Every dollar of every Adopt-A-Student gift goes to a specific seminarian. You will receive letters from “your” stu-dent sharing joys, challenges and progress.

Right now there are many students waiting to be “adopted.” Sponsors give $500 or more annually which may be given as a one-time gift or throughout the year through several donations. Gifts prepare future pastors, missionaries and deaconesses. Or, you may designate your gift for students enrolled in the International, Center of Hispanic Institute Studies, or Ethnic Immigrant Insti-tute of Theology programs.

Students are back in school in our surrounding counties. College campuses are preparing for students to return to classes. Many churches are gearing up for a new year of Sunday school.
