Newsletter Mullaloo Beach Primary School Dear Parents & Carers, Welcome back to Term 2. This term is again set to be very busy with many classes planning excursions, NAPLAN for our Years 3s and 5s which begins next week and Edu-Dance sessions are well under way. We will be asking students to reflect on the goals they set for themselves last term and with teacher guidance, set themselves some new goals. We encourage parents to be a part of the goal setting process and talk to their children regularly about their progress towards achieving the goals they have set. Given that this term we are initiating our “Times Table Challenge” initiative across the school, many students may choose to set a goal that relates to this. ANZAC Commemoration Assembly On Friday 12 April, we held our ANZAC Service at the front of the school. It was a very moving and respectful service with the students from Rooms 8 and 9 doing an amazing job. The poetry recitals and the songs were beautifully presented. I would like to acknowledge the efforts of Mrs Helen Craigie and Mrs Melita Kitchen for their superb coordination of the event. I would also like to thank Mr Duffy for his memorable ANZAC Address. National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) Tuesday 14 May—Friday 24 May 2019 Next week, our students in Years 3 and 5 will sit the annual NAPLAN assessments. This year the assessments occur over a two-week period, commencing on Tuesday 14 May and finishing on Friday 24 May. The extended testing period is due to the assessments (with the exception of Year 3 Writing) being completed online. Due to band width restrictions, no more than one year level can sit an assessment at any one time. Parents of students in these year levels are requested to ensure that their children arrive at school on time as all tests occur in the morning. Please also advise your child’s teacher or the office if your child will be absent on the testing days as there is only limited opportunity for catch-up testing to occur. Parents can assist their children by encouraging them to approach the tests in a relaxed manner. Children should be reminded to simply “do their best” and not to become anxious. Having minimal disruptions to the home routine is also beneficial, including arriving to school on time and maintaining regular bedtimes. Individual NAPLAN student reports will be distributed to parents later this year. This generally occurs early in Term 3. [email protected] IMPORTANT DATES……… Friday 10 th May Student Leader assembly. Edu-Dance All classes from K to 6 are under way with their Edu-Dance lessons. The concerts will take place in week 10. The lessons build health, fitness, movement skills and rhythm. They are also a lot of fun. Thanks to Mrs Slabosz for her organisation of this program.

Running Club The Running Club has been underway now for three weeks. It has been great to see students of all fitness levels taking positive steps in their own health and wellbeing. Remember that Running Club is open to all students from Years 3 to 6. The club meets at 8.10am on Tuesday for running and activities designed to build health and fitness. Thanks to Mrs McLachlan for giving her time to run the club. Parents are welcome to join in.

Maths Olympiad This week some of our talented Year 5 and 6 Maths students will begin lessons in preparation for the Maths Olympiad Competition. The problems posed to the children can be quite challenging and really test their ability to apply the problem solving strategies that they (and the other students) learn in class. From time to time we will share with you a sample of the type of questions posed. Give them a try and see how you get on. “Sarah and Connor went bowling together. Sarah rented bowling shoes and played three games, for a total cost of $9.50. Connor rented bowling shoes and played five games, for a total cost of $14.50. How much does it cost to rent bowling shoes? It should be noted that children who are not part of the “Olympiad Team” are still involved in problem solving sessions in class.

Camp Mornington Review It was 8:45am in the morning, when we leapt on the bus. The bus drive to Camp Mornington was two and a half hours and seemed even longer to us poor kids. After arriving at camp, we rushed to our dorms ready to unpack our bags and choose our beds. At camp we did many fun and exciting new activities such as Canoeing, Archery, Abseiling and Mid Ropes. The food was amazing and filled us right to the brim! We enjoyed every single second of camp right to the end, with marshmallow toasting, movie night, a ‘Talentless Quest’ and even a quiz. It was an absolutely amazing three fun days at camp and was thoroughly enjoyed by all the students. Thanks so much Mrs Kitchen Mrs Craigie! By Igor Zivkovic and Sean Daniel, Year 6.

Calling All Scientists in Years 2 - 6 For the second year running, Mullaloo Beach PS will be taking part in the STAWA (Science Teacher’s Association of WA) Science Talent Search Competition. Last year we entered 21 investigations into the competition across Years 1 to 6. In the Year 3 to 6 category, 6 out of the 10 chosen finalists came from MBPS. Many of those students later entered their investigations into the BHP Billiton National Science Competition and received commendations and awards. We are looking for students who have a keen interest in Science and have the drive and determination to think up, plan, carry out and analyse an investigation of their own choice. This is a big commitment and investigations will need to be completed by the middle of August to be entered into the competition. I will be running alternate Wednesday after school sessions (weeks 5, 7 & 9 for term 2, from 2.30 pm to 3.30 pm) to coach and guide students with their investigations. The first session in week 5, will be a parent and student information session. If your child would like to enter this competition please let me know their name by the end of week 4, Friday, 24th May. Mrs Ann Brown (Science Teacher)

A big thank you goes out to the families who are helping make sure students are supporting 'nude food' on Tuesdays. At Mullaloo Beach Primary School, we are proud of our beautiful natural environment. As a community, we are trying to cut down on our use of single use plastic and other packaging. It would be great if more families could get involved in our nude food initiative and ensure food in lunch boxes is packed in re-usable containers.

Here are some fantastic examples from Year 5 students.

More information on wipe out waste, go to the link: http://www.wow.sa.gov.au/nude-food.html

Last term our Year 4’s prepared a waste audit of the whole school and the analysis of the results is quite interesting. Did you know that we throw out 196kg a year of whole, unopened packaged food at Mullaloo Beach? In addition, our children throw out 744 pieces of whole fruit! So, parents, you are spending a lot of unnecessary money, it would seem. We suggest having a chat to your children about what goes into their lunch boxes, what they don’t eat and encourage them to bring home uneaten items. Better still; go for Nude Food every day. Also, if any parents are interested in being involved in our Sustainability initiatives at school, including the vegetable garden, please contact our Science teacher, Mrs Annie Brown, [email protected] or our Year 4 teacher, Ms Pauline Floate, [email protected]

BATTERY RECYCLING

Thank you to all of the families who have brought in batteries to be recycled. This helps our environment by stopping batteries from degrading in our rubbish tips and polluting our underground water supplies.

Recycle a mobile Please bring your old mobile phones to room 10 for recycling.

PRINTER CARTRIDGES Used printer cartridges are also being recycled at school. These are to be given to class teachers. Thank you

"Giving To Create A Sustainable Future..."

We are collecting items for two charities. Firstly, an organisation called ‘Manna’ who supports the needs of people who are struggling to stay warm in our cold winters. For the winter season this year we are collecting donations of doonas, blankets and sleeping bags (no pillows please). Your donation enables Manna to provide essential items to disadvantaged West Australians. A collection box for any donated items is located in the atrium area. More information on ‘Manna hope, food and warmth’, please go to the link https://www.manna.org.au/

Help us create a sustainable future in helping those in need today... We are also collecting for an organisation called 'Hungry Tummies Pet food Pantry and Donations' (check them out on Facebook), who do an amazing job feeding and finding a new home for unwanted dogs and cats. Donations of cat and dog food (dry and wet), old towels, blankets and kennels would be greatly appreciated. A collection box for any donated items is located in the atrium area. Thank you in advance to the generous families at MBPS.
