30 iPads donated to Xavier High SchoolThirty iPads were recently

donated to Xavier High School in order to prepare the students for the implementation of the 1:1 Student-to-iPad Project in the 2013-2014 school year.

The 30 iPads, along with a cart to charge and transport them, were donated by Dan and Donna Lynch, Dave and Vicki Drown, and Joe and Carolyn Kirby. “Using electronics is the future of education, and getting an iPad in every students’ hands puts Xavier ahead of the curve. We wanted to help launch the program,” Dan Lynch said. Lynch hopes that by equipping each student with an iPad, future students who may

not have otherwise considered attending Xavier will now give Xavier closer consideration.

Xavier teachers have been putting the iPads to good use and implementing them in their daily curriculum. “I made an Educreation, which is an interactive video lesson, in Mrs. Schutt’s class. I’m not much of a technology person, but it was actually really fun, and I learned a lot!” junior Kayla Lansing said.

Xavier math teacher and Student Senate moderator Mrs. Goertz was very excited that Student Senate has been able to utilize the iPads. The students filmed international students during Round Table sharing their stories, and then used these clips to create an iMovie.

Xavier participates in School Cents program Now through December 31, the

Xavier community can help Xavier earn money through School Cents, a program sponsored by Lindale Mall and Kiss Country 96.5 FM. The program is designed to assist schools in Iowa by providing necessary funding.

A total of $25,000 will be rewarded to 15 schools in Iowa, including Xavier, Kennedy, and Washington High Schools. Five thousand dollars will be awarded to the leading school after the first six weeks of the program and the final ceremony will award the other $20,000 based on rankings. As of October 21, Xavier was in ninth place in the competition, with 135 points.

For each dollar spent at businesses such as Hy-Vee, Pizza Hut, and any Lindale Mall retailer,

10 points are earned. 100 points are earned at any Lindale Mall food retailer per dollar spent. During the weekend of December 14-16, the stores that count for 10 points will be increased to 30 points per dollar spent as a part of the School Cents Triple Point Weekend.

To participate in the program, customers save the receipts from purchases made at the selected businesses. The receipts will count for points toward Xavier’s total.

Receipts can be submitted at Lindale Mall, Collins Road Hy-Vee, or at Xavier. The mall redemption box is located by the fountain. Receipts can also be turned in at Customer Service in Hy-Vee or in the main office at Xavier. Make sure to write “XAVIER” on the back of any receipts turned in at Hy-Vee or Xavier.

In addition to receipts, first quarter report cards can also count for points towards Xavier. A student or a parent may bring any original copy of a high school report card to Guest Services at Lindale Mall. Points will be determined by the grade point average and will count toward Xavier’s point total in School Cents.

Last year, Xavier received $750 through the School Cents program. Xavier hopes to earn even more points this year with community help. Associate Principal Angela Oslon said, “School Cents is an easy way to support Xavier in the community, where the money comes directly to the school.”

Because of the generosity of the Lynch, Drown, and Kirby families, Xavier High School is on its way to a new level of learning. On Thursday, November 29, the Board of Education approved the initiative for every Xavier student to have an iPad for the 2013-2014 school year, beginning the 1:1 Student-to-iPad Project.
