By the time you see this article, our lives should be eased as the shelter-in-place orders become less restrictive. The economy is being opened again so that we can, hopefully, go about our life as we once knew it.

Some of the “new” normal will just become normal. It’ll become second nature to wear a face covering when sick, to protect others and ourselves. Also, we will be more mindful of our cleanliness; washing our hands and using hand sanitizer will be more popular than ever. This is here to stay.

What we hope is NOT going to be the “new” normal is the small round of lay-offs experienced by some our members. As restaurants and food service estab-lishments reopen up for business, our laid-off members should start to return to their jobs. We hope this work will be as robust as it was before the pandemic.

On the other end of the spectrum, some of the industries our members work in have spiked and are experiencing peak work during non-peak season. This is mostly due to the shelter-in-place orders that led to more on-line ordering and deliveries to more households. Hopefully, this will lead to more people getting hired to reduce the excessive hours.

As nobody knows how the pandemic will end, we all are having to adjust our work and private lives. But we can and will get through this pandemic. We are Teamster strong and will persevere.

On behalf of Local 70’s Officers and Officials, I am taking this opportunity to thank each and every member for your hard work and for keeping our local economies functioning during the pandemic. These last few months would not have been possible without the essential workforce that you all are.

    Secretary-Treasurer’s Report Marty Frates

Political Action Report The pandemic impacts how we’ll do politics in NovemberBy Rich Fierro, Business Agent/Political Coordinator

As we head into the summer, our nation has been challenged on multiple fronts. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced us into social distancing, wearing mandatory face masks and PPE, and con-fronting grocery shortages, and unemployment rates not seen since the great depression.

The killing of George Floyd has rocked our nation and will hopefully force our country to deal with the longstanding and unresolved inequities that exist in society.

Each of these situations reveal why, as Team-sters, we need to be diligent and active this upcoming election season. There are multiple Local, County, and Congressional races where we will be actively interviewing and endorsing candidates. However, the most important race this election cycle will be for the office of Presi-dent of the U.S.

The International Union has not yet official-ly endorsed Joe Biden, but we expect that to happen shortly. During his term in office, Pres-

ident Trump has done everything in his power to diminish the authority of every department, and undermine every law or regulation that

benefits working people. He also has been in lock step with Senate Republicans working to prevent any movement toward helping our brothers and sis-ters who are in failing pension plans.

We are not sure what our field campaign will look like

this election season, as the pandemic has radical-ly affected what would be our normal process. We are going to be heavily focused on voter registration, as that is where the process starts. We are formulating our plans to reach out to our members and will keep everyone posted on plans.

We will also post and distribute our endorse-ments. Our plan is to start endorsements in early summer, and complete the process before fall. If you are interested in becoming more involved, please give me a call at 510-673-0731.

    Rising to the top

Vice President’s Report Thank you, Stewards!By Jim Fried

First and foremost I, along with all of the Officers and Officials, would like to thank the stewards for all their hard work during the pan-demic. Most of the industries we represent are considered essential.

One of my jobs as Vice President is to coor-dinate the stewards council meetings and educa-tional sessions. The next stewards council meet-ing on September 26 will be special as we have organized a presentation by IBT historian Karin Jones on the 117 year history of Local 70.

I look forward to working with the new stew-

ards council. The members come from various barns in Local 70 with each steward bringing years of knowledge and a different a perspective to the table.

The stewards council members are: Bob Mar-tinez from DHL, Darryl Deloney from UPS Freight, Nick Radke from Reyes Coca Cola, Chris Boyd from ABF, Thomas Lewis from UPS package and Aaron Prasad from Republic Services.

I thank them all for stepping up for their inter-est in making Local 70 an even stronger union.

On behalf of Local 70’s officers and officials, I would like to thank all of our members for your hard work during these difficult times. So far, 2020 has been a challenging year. Many, if not all, have had to adapt to the “new normal”—whether teaching your children from home, social distancing or just wearing a face covering.

We at the local have had to adapt and pivot as well. This has been a sudden thrust into the 2020s! We have conducted craft meetings via Zoom—UPS, Waste Management and Reyes

Coca Cola, to name a few. We will also be mak-ing history for Local 70 as we will held our first Zoom general membership meeting in June.

Since 1903, the membership of our great local has lived through earthquakes, fires, civil unrest and wars. Through all of this, our membership has kept the rubber to the road. We have and will continue to step up and serve the communities that help keep our jobs secure. Through these times, we will be the cream and rise to the top.

Pandemic impacts Local 70 traditionsFor the past few monthss, the

COVID-19 pandemic has impacted our lives and changed our world for-ever. The shelter-in-place order has affected our mem-bers at Local 70 as we have never seen before. However, our members have been unified, resil-ient, and strong, and we will persevere through this unprec-edented crisis.

Not only has our personal and work lives been impacted, but some of Local 70’s traditions, both new and old, have had to change as a result of the pandemic. I was looking forward to working with the rest of the officers and officials to sell tickets

for the Teamsters’ Day at the Park tailgate at the Coliseum and to meet-ing more members and their families at the game. Unfortunately, that won’t

happen this year. With that said, let

our determination and perseverance get us through these dif-ficult and changing times.

On behalf of the officers and officials, I will take the privilege of thanking all our essential workers. We are proud to repre-sent the women and men—the members

of Local 70. Thank you for helping to keep your community functioning.
