UC Berkeley considers building residence hall atlocation of Stiles Hall
UC Berkeley’s Real Estate Division presented a proposal for afreshman residence hall between Bancroft Way and DurantAvenue during an open house Monday night.
The mixeduse building would be located at the site of Stiles Hallat 2400 Bancroft Way, which would be demolished, and theadjacent parking lot for campus affiliates. The Stiles Hallcommunity service agency, which houses the campus Food Pantryand campus veteran services, would be housed in the new facility, along with retail space.
The new building would provide incoming freshman studentswith primarily doubleoccupancy residence hall rooms, housingapproximately 770 students. The project comes in the wake of astudent housing shortage that has resulted in increased tripleoccupancy rooms and limited availability.
“Students are finding it harder and harder to find places to liveclose to campus,” said Rajiv Parikh, campus assistant vicechancellor of real estate. “We want to make sure that we stay

current and provide those opportunities.”
The city of Berkeley’s Southside Plan, which hopes to build a morecohesive district, is guiding the building design and landuseprogram, as is the UC Berkeley 2020 Long Range DevelopmentPlan and Physical Design Framework. Both plans recognize theneed for more housing.
The proposed 183,500squarefoot, eightstory building is amiddle ground in height and density compared with theTelegraph commercial area and the campus’s ninestoryresidential units, according to a press release.
The campus would partner with American Campus Communities,a private university housing development company, to constructand operate the project.
The hall would be made up of 19 “pods” of 40 students each, designed to create a sense of community, according to SteveSutton, campus assistant vice chancellor of residential andstudent service programs. Each pod would include a residentadviser, a study lounge and genderinclusive bathrooms.
Campus sophomore Hailey Zhou is interested in the proposal because she turned down campushousing last year and chose to live in the Berk, a private housing option close to campus.
“One of the reason was how crowded it is and how they remodeled the doubles to triples,” Zhousaid. “The things that I heard weren’t the best.”
Tim Stevens, the design principal for the architecture, interior design and planning firm workingon the project, presented the proposal Monday night. Stevens said current campus housing is notup to par, with few amenities and undersized bathrooms. The proposed housing would includeclosets, microfridges and ceiling fans, all of which would be built in.
“Even though it is still a residencehall environment, the level of amenity at every scale — from therooms to the bathrooms to the social lounges to the groundfloor amenity — are a step up fromwhat exists here,” Stevens said.
The project will continue through a series of steps, including soliciting student input from advisorygroups and going before the UC Board of Regents for approval, according to Sutton. Construction isproposed to begin in winter 2016, allowing students to move in by fall 2018.

Correction(s):A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that the proposed mixeduse building wouldreplace the Stiles Hall community service agency, which houses the campus Food Pantry andcampus veteran services. In fact, the program would continue to be housed in the new facility.

What is with this article? It doesn't even mention what will happen to all the organizationsthat are currently in Stiles Hall. It just says that this project will "replace them." Suchincomplete reporting.

The executive director of Stiles was also at the meeting. The nonprofit is in favor ofthe new building, and will have their space replaced with ground floor access off ofBancroft within the new building envelope.

Triple occupancy dorms must be just about unlivable because doubleoccupancy wasnearly so, when those buildings were 40 years younger. In fact, it was so horrible I fled to afrat at a time when fraternities were considered the lowest form of human life oncampus just to get away from that place. Still sickens me to think about it.
By contrast, my time in a dorm at an Ivy graduate school was ... blissful. Single rooms, nicefacilities, it was a night and day difference. So much so that, had I had it to do it overagain, I would've chosen that Ivy which accepted me as an undergraduate as well; just*because* of my housing experience at Cal.
Sure glad Dirks lives in that mansion on campus with his drivers, servants and $500k peryear salary Let 'em eat cake is probably his feeling on the matter.
