NOVEMBER 2016

Each November we celebrate National Hospice and Palliative Care Month! It is a wonderful opportunity to bring our care to the forefront and show what an amazing impact it has on those who are touched by the services we provide.

In celebration of National Hospice and Palliative Care Month, we have developed a special insert that was shared in our local papers to create even more awareness about the services of HopeWest. The insert has already appeared in your community’s paper and I hope you’ve had a chance to see what you have helped make happen over the last year.

Our programs and services are not created alone but through the partnership of thousands of individuals who give in different ways. Thank you for the time and energy each of you provide in helping make a profound impact on patients and families each day.

Also in November is Children’s Grief Awareness Day which fell on Thursday, November 17. This special day highlights the community’s need to support grieving youth across western Colorado. Each year HopeWest Kids is able to help 700 grieving children, but there are so many more who need our services. This program is only possible through philanthropy.

HopeWest Kids is here to help children who are grieving the loss of a loved one. At HopeWest, children are not forgotten in their grief journey. Through grief counseling, school groups, camps, family groups and equine therapy, there are many opportunities to offer hope and healing during oneof the most difficult times of life. HopeWest Kids is made possible only through philanthropy.

Because Of Your Generosity HopeWest Kids was able to help 700 children this year. Our professional counselors understand the importance of hearing their stories, drying their tears and easing their pain.

We Honor VeteransHopeWest We Honor Veterans committee recognizes patients.

Recognizing our veterans“It is such an honor to serve our veteran patients at HopeWest that so bravely served our country,” stated Beth Brown, Clinical Manager and longtime nurse at HopeWest.

Beth is an advocate for veterans and leads the HopeWest We Honor Veterans Committee that was established six years ago. The committee is comprised of staff and volunteers devoted to recognizing veterans, enhancing education based on veteran’s needs, identifying resources and collaborating with our local community.

Just recently Dick Johnson, a patient in the hospice program, was recognized for his service while staying at the HopeWest Hospice Care Center.

“They presented my dad Dick with a certificate of thanks signed by all the staff, gave a speech in his honor, draped a patriotic quilt – handmade by volunteers – over his lap and pinned a double flag pin on his chest,” said Darcy Michael, daughter of Dick Johnson. “We were impressed the whole staff came in and the ceremony was very heartfelt.”

Dick was very moved by the experience. “The staff recognizing me, I think it would mean a great deal to any soldier that served this country. It sure does to me,” said Dick.

“Our whole family, including dad, teared up,” said Darcy. “It was a very emotional experience for everyone. He was very appreciative. We are all very appreciative.”

Surrounded by his closest family and friends, Dick Johnson, a patient at HopeWest, is honored for his service to our country by staff at the HopeWest Hospice Care Center in Grand Junction.

Thank you to those who have served our country. We appreciate you!

Gala in Meeker a Wicked SuccessWhat a party! More than 200 people turned out for a Spooktacular time at our 4th annual Halloween Gala – Wicked. It is so much fun each year to see the creative costumes. All is in good fun as the goal of the evening is to raise funds for HopeWest that stay right in Meeker. Thank you so much to the amazing community, volunteers and donors who help support this wonderful evening and all year long.

Happenings across

Equine connection brings comfort to hospice patientProbably the happiest time of my life was with my horse and this experience is taking me back there, said HopeWest Patient Debra LeFevre. Debra’s biggest wish, besides feeling well again, was to be around horses where memories of her fondest moments in life were spent. Betty McMahan, a HopeWest Patient and Family Support Volunteer, made this visit to the stables possible after learning that Debra desired to see horses again. When Betty contacted HopeWest, staff were able to connect with a Board Member and fellow volunteer Joe Breman, who offered his horses and stable and helped accommodate the visit.

HopeWest employees support United Way at kickoff event

HopeWest employees celebrated, along with other community members, the success of each of the United Way Pacesetter Campaigns. “HopeWest is honored to have been a pacesetter organization, actively raising funds through employee campaigns for United Way since 1997,” said Mary Wigington, VP of Human Resources at HopeWest. “We are very excited this year because together HopeWest employees raised more than $46,000 for United Way of Mesa County.”

Forget-Me-Not family grief group meets in MontroseFamilies in Montrose get to know each other over supper, kindly prepared by volunteers, before starting their grief work in the Forget-Me-Not Grief Group. Each week for 6 weeks families who have experienced the death of a loved one meet to share their story, support one another and learn new coping skills. “This is the first Forget-Me-Not group we’ve hosted in Montrose and we’re looking forward to supporting more families,” said Shirley Harvey, Youth Services Coordinator. The families that participate have experienced a variety of losses – sometimes accidental, sudden or tragic losses of parents, siblings, spouses and close friends.

Honoring Lives. Changing Lives.HopeWest Kids grief support program brings back smiles to more than 700 kids this year

who have lost a loved one. This special program is funded through your generosity.
