Looking Back

Anson Engine Museum Visit 4th September 2018

We met at the Anson Engine Museum, Anson Road, Poynton which is situated in a secluded

hollow at the end of a long drive where the Anson Coal Pit used to be. It has an award -winning

collection of engines, one of the most comprehensive in the country, and I was amazed to hear

they have some engines from National Collections on permanent loan. It is a charitable trust, and

Geoff Challinor, a co-founder, is now in charge; they opened to the public in 1989.

Our guides told us of the trouble they had getting planning approval for an extension to the museum's

exhibition area and new coffee shop, happily now granted. The area is surrounded by trees and well

hidden, but it is in the green belt. It was founded by the late Les Cawley, a tree contractor.

After an introduction, the enthusiastic guides showed us round the engines and told us the history

and how they worked. There is a unique collection of over 250 gas and oil engines. The volunteer

staff started several engines, often with clouds of smoke, and it was fascinating to see them working.

All our questions were well answered. Too often museums can be dead, but this one is different.

There was an excellent 3D desk top model of the pit area, and a huge one covering the Poynton

area of about 1900, based on an old OS map, showing all the old coal pits plus the railways and

tramways feeding them. The quality of these models was superb, and everyone was interested and

asking questions. Over 5,000 hours of work went into the big model!

Demonstrations were given outside by bodgers and wood turners; the volunteers were well skilled.

A coffee stop and shop completed our trip and afterwards, some of us continued our technical

studies at the nearby Boar's Head, where we took the specific gravity of the beer & sampled the

excellence of the cheese and onion pies!

A good day was had by all. Many thanks to Paddy and Roger for organising a very successful trip.

If you have not been, Google "Anson Engine Museum" for opening times. Highly recommended. There

is a page on Wikipedia as well. It closes for the winter at the end of October. Allow 2+ hours to see it all.

A further report on Kite Flying

There was an international kite festival at Lytham St Annes on 1st September. My daughter took me - a

wonderful day out - sun, sea, kites in profusion and bratwurst! I flew my 'usual' simple pocket sled kite

along with many other flyers. Afterwards, I flew my kite and Suzanna flew my NT stunt kite at Castlerigg

Stone Circle (near Keswick) and, on holiday, I flew my kite and the CHU3A kite at Barmouth.

2nd Wednesday Strollers: Strollers 1: Wednesday 10 October.

On what seemed possibly the warmest day ever in October, 7 of us set out from Swann Lane to

Styal Country Park. We began with refreshments in Ealham's Cafe. We then walked along to the

school and Unitarian chapel, passing the old Styal cottages on the way. Our next place of interest

was the "Apprentices' Gardens" where food for the kitchen was/is grown. The "apprentices"

working the plots were mostly retirement age, reflecting long indentures, but we did see adults

and children dressed in period costume.

On the way home we called in the Griffin at Heald Green, where a small carvery cost about £5.50

and an extensive menu was available at reasonable cost.

Our next walk on Wednesday 14 November will be along the Micker Brook, starting and finishing

near the Micker Brook hostelry, where we plan to dine.

A Visit to the People’s Museum

On a wet and blustery day in September, a group of us defied the weather to travel into Manchester

for a very interesting and thought-provoking visit to the People’s Museum. We were escorted around

by a well-informed guide who reminded us, by means of a wealth of posters, banners, photographs

and artefacts, of the people of Manchester ’s past struggle, within the wider national context, for

equality of franchise , employment and quality of life.

Certain political and satirical comments from years ago demonstrated that some things remain ironi-

cally similar today, e.g.: the concentration of power in the hands of a few wealthy people who have

little understanding of how the majority of people live.

After such a stimulating and sobering hour, we adjourned to the café for tea and scones before once

more facing the elements on the journey home.

Thanks are due to Peggy for organising yet another worthwhile trip.
