what istake heart?Take Heart is a charity set up 26 years ago by a small group who wished to give some-thing back to the Yorkshire Heart Centre at Leeds General Infirmary after successful treatment. Since its inception, the charity has raised over three million pounds and has made an enormous difference for patients and staff alike. The charity is most unusual in that there are no salaries paid to any staff – all trustees give their time voluntarily and only a tiny percentage of donations is used for administration.

The differences made are immediately apparent when you enter the Heart Centre. New modern furniture, decor and fittings, modern equipment, bedside television, radio, internet and even all bedside landline telephone calls are provided free by Take Heart. Superb accommodation is provided in the hospital free of charge by Take Heart for patient’s relatives who have distance to travel. Additional medical equipment is also provided to enhance the treatment of patients as is the provision of booklets for patients explaining procedures practised in the hospital. Staff areas including reception desks, staff rooms and cloakrooms have been refurbished. Take Heart also provide a roof garden adjacent to the heart wards to give patients, relatives and staff a breath of fresh air. All this and so much more is provided with the generous donations received. So much so that staff have been overheard referring to Take Heart as their own Father Christmas.

We never fail to be touched by the wonderful people who donate small and larger amounts. Thank you so much.

We work closely with the very professional and skilled staff to support them in their work, giving them nice working conditions in pleasant surroundings. I must also mention those who carry out the day to day running of all our units - the porters, cleaners, ward assistants, and so many others behind the scenes who ensure that the centre is used to its very best.

So I say a big Thank You to you all. As always, we will continue to do our utmost to ensure everyone who has to use the Yorkshire Heart Centre has support at what can be a very anxious time.

Don’t forget your Charity’s AGM. This newsletter should contain a leaflet with full details of the event and also details of the trip to Southport. If it’s missing, please ring Alec McLean on 0113 257 6548 or leave a message on Leeds 0113 392 2888 and we will forward one to you.

As you will have seen in our previous newsletter, we have spent large amounts on improving your visit to Outpatients on E Floor, Jubilee Wing. This facility has thousands of patients passing through its doors. The work is nearly finished and we have had lovely comments from staff and visitors. It is your generous support which allows us to carry out these projects, so once again - Thank You.

Hope all who are on the day trip have sunshine and a lovely day.

Colin Pullan, MBE Chairman

The start of Spring is always nice for so many of us, giving light nights and long days. It is the same for your charity - the thousands who support us should realise that what you are offering is ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ for the vast numbers who use the facilities of The Yorkshire Heart Centre.

£5000.00 of that total was a legacy from a lady in Scarborough. I am told on good authority that once a charity has reached a certain age, it will start receiving legacies and that is certainly proving correct with our charity.

People are impressed with the work that the charity has done since its incep-tion and rightly so. We obviously cannot compete with the wonderful work done by the consultants, doctors and nursing staff - nor would we even try - but the charity has made life a lot easier for patients and their families. We have also done our best to make the working environment more pleasant for the staff. We have purchased many items of equipment and, as most of our trustees have benefitted from treatment, they are very much aware of patient and relatives needs.

Our latest venture of holding a afternoon tea on the last Saturday of each month is proving to be a great success and is another place where patients can bring their visitors for a nice cuppa and buns in pleasant surroundings.

I have just received the return of my books from the auditors and everything was satisfactory. By the time you read this the accounts and Trustee reports will all be in the hands of the Charity Commissioners.

It is our Annual General Meeting on the 8th of June so I hope to see you then.

Alec McLean

When I became Treasurer for Take Heart, at the end of the first year, I balanced the books and the whole years taking was just over £9,000. I have just been to the bank and deposited £8448.42, in one week, just short of that whole year’s takings. I make this point just to show how well the charity has done since it was stated in 1989.

treasurer’s trove

Since we had to move our office from Jubilee Wing to one overlooking Millennium Square, it has been largely unmanned. So Alec, the treasurer and I decided that, whenever possible, we would man the office every Wednesday from 10am until 3pm.This has proved to be beneficial and after a slow start, we are now kept busy with mail, admin, phones and visitors. However, what one might expect to be a chore, turned into an intensely moving experience. Opening the post including the letters posted in our boxes in the heart wards and reading the contents absolutely confirms our faith in humanity. Apart from enclosing money and cheques, they, without exception, talk about and demonstrate gratitude for the treatment received in the Yorkshire Heart Centre and more importantly, love for family, individuals and people in general. Letters range from wives about husbands, husbands about wives, brothers and sisters about peers and friends about others. All

demonstrate their gratitude and love by expressing their feelings about the journey they have made in the Heart Department and towards the people who have worked for a positive outcome. Perhaps most moving is when we receive letters from children who thank us for giving them their mummy or daddy back and giving their pocket money to us to help others. As a charity, we never directly ask people for money. The donations and legacies which come our way are freely given and I find that one of the most appealing aspects of Take Heart. Alec and I agree that we like working for Take Heart and we would gladly do it for nothing… oh, I forgot - we all do that anyway!A huge ‘thank you’ to everyone concerned for enabling Take Heart to make life just a little more comfortable for patients and the fantastic staff of the Yorkshire Heart Centre.Bill Stevenson, Editor

All You Need is Love

If you intend to visit the office on a Wednesday, please telephone 0113 392 2888 first to ensure that we are there. To find the office, use the Brotherton Wing entrance opposite Millennium Square, take the lift to D Floor and we are there.

Alec and Bill in the office.

Two Sisters And MumSarah, Helen And Tori Bull

Ran The London Marathon For UsThey wrote:“Our Dad suffered a cardiac arrest whilst in LGI - he really was in the right place at the right time. They used a defibrillator to literally bring him back to life and he has been on the road to recovery since - only recently been given the all clear from his consultant which we are all very happy about. Our Dad spent almost 2 months in the Leeds General Infirmary where he was treated and cared for on the high dependency heart unit by staff from LGI and more importantly the Take Heart charity. They did a fantastic job in making my Dad and his many amazing friends and visitors comfortable during a very stressful and worrying time. They made everything relaxed, knowing he was being looked after by the right people really did make us all feel at ease. Even if he was a handful for them! So we thought, what better way

of showing our appreciation but to run a marathon. Not on our own, but with each other. My Mum and sister and I will be joining hands at the start of the London Marathon and run the whole way together. Our Dad and other supporting boyfriends will be there on the sidelines cheering us on around the streets of London too! This will be a challenge for all of us, but we want to say a HUGE THANK YOU to Take Heart. It will be my 25th birthday on the day and we hope to celebrate at the end by not only completing the 26.2 miles but by raising a huge amount of money.”And goodness me, they did! They raised the magnificent sum of £2250.00. Thank you so much girls – and many congratulations. Colin Pullan, MBE Chairman

We had just put our children to bed when we heard sobbing from three year old Ryan’s room. Rushing to his side, we found that he had accidentally swallowed a penny and was sure he was going to die.

Desperate to calm him, my husband palmed a penny and pretended to pull it from Ryan’s ear. Ryan was delighted. He snatched the coin from my husband’s hand, swallowed it and demanded cheerfully, “Do it again, Dad.”

smileI was more than pleased to make this presentation of a Certificate of Appreciation to David Shepherd for raising over £3500.00 in various fundraising activities during his year as President of the Corner House Club in Leeds 17.

Many thanks David – the money will be put to very good use in the Yorkshire Heart Centre.

I was pleased to pop along to the Out-Patients Department on E floor of Jubilee Wing and meet Brian Currie who represented a fundraising group called ‘Dad’s Army’ which over the years have raised thousands of pounds for many worthy causes.

The group have done many crazy things to raise funds. For example - crawling on hands and knees between five pubs - a painful way to raise funds! The team - Brian Currie, Peter Hague, Steve Munday and Jim Moore have now decided to call time on their ventures.

Recently Brian’s wife Yvonne, had surgery at the Yorkshire Heart Centre and they were so impressed with the wonderful care she received and the facilities provided by Take Heart that they donated the last of the funds of Dad’s Army totalling £536.39 to us.

Many thanks to ‘Dad’s Army’ for this lovely donation.

I was delighted to receive a phone call from the ladies who knitted many teddies for us last year, saying they had completed 8 teddies, a giant rabbit and 9 baby outfits. This was just after a desperate plea for more baby clothes that very day at our afternoon tea!The two ladies are Mrs Doreen Jackson and Mrs Jean Robertson who have again given us these marvellous toys and outfits to benefit Take Heart and we are very grateful for their time, effort and great skill.Jeremy Caiger Trustee

Our annual sponsored walk will be held on Sunday 6th September at Roundhay Park. Registration starts at 9.30am at the Mansion and the walk begins at 11am. We have a great many stalls from Tombola with some really good prizes – fantastic cakes and homemade buns – a book stall – and lots of others. These are under cover in the education centre of the Mansion.

This is our biggest event of the year and EVERYONE is welcome to join us. Bring the family, bring friends, bring the dogs – and especially, bring the children. It’s a great day out. Do the walk – as long or as short as you like and receive a Take Heart medal at the end of it. It’s a really good day out – please put the date in your diary or calendar and we look forward to seeing you there.

We have just paid the yearly fee of £36,000.00 to Hospedia to provide free TV, Telephone Calls and Internet to all in-patients of the Heart Wards. The trustees are negotiating to provide equipment to enable surgeons to use ‘Vein Harvesting’ during bypass operations. This procedure can reduce problems for patients who have veins removed from their leg during the operation. The contribution from Take Heart is likely to be in the region of £25,000.00.Provision for a special wheelchair to be used in the MRI Scanner Department. Cost in the region of £1,800.00.Assisting Dr Perrin and Mr Kay to setup a Wet Lab in Theatre. This consists of two tables in theatre together with cameras where surgeons train on new procedures (not on humans!). Our contribution will be in the region of £20,000.00And so it goes on….

We received this letter:“Hi there. I work at Rowlands Pharmacy in Hipperholme, Halifax and each year, I make up a hamper to raffle to raise money for Take Heart.I am a patient at the Congenital Heart Unit as I was born with a complex heart condition. I am under the expert care of Dr Kate English and my Specialist Nurse is Jo Quirk.I really enjoy doing this every year and customers, family and friends are always happy to buy tickets to donate to Take Heart. We raised a total of £140.00 and I enclose the cheque. Thanks to everyone who took part.Mandy Grundy (Mrs)

I received an invitation from Dance Teacher Thelma Sanderson to go along and meet up with the ladies of the Shipley Keep Fit Class.

They presented me with a cheque for £1000.00 and requested that this be put towards a major current project with which we are involved.

I assured them that the money would be put towards a project we are financing which involves something new to Leeds Heart Surgery – equipment to facilitate ‘Vein Harvesting’ for use in Bypass Surgery. This can dramatically reduce problems associated with the removal of leg veins of patients who are undergoing this operation.

My thanks to all concerned for donating this wonderful amount.

Further details will be in the next newsletter and also on the Take Heart website in due course.

Dear Take Heart

May I take this opportunity to thank you all for the work you had done in our sluice. The space it has created means that we can keep patient’s soaps, razors, combs etc all in one place which saves the staff so much time when trying to organise a hectic ward on a morning.

The work was done quickly with minimum disruption to staff and patients. The invaluable work you do for the cardiology department makes such a difference to us all.

Once again, many thanks to you all.

Kind regardsCamilla Smith, Sister, Ward L19
