President’s State of the Organization
Board of Directors 2010 has been a significant and
fruitful year for Arizona Greyhound
Rescue. I’d like to take some time
and let you all know what has
happened and where we are this
year.
AGR has changed in some respects
from what it originally was. There are
new locations, new people, and new
methods, all designed to make the
dogs happier, and find homes faster.
And that’s really what we are all
about.
We have a new kennel facility, and
are extremely grateful that Liz Troudt
continues to manage the new kennel.
The new facility is a more secure and
safe environment for the dogs. Yes, it
is a bit more expensive than the
original kennel, but the dogs are safe
and well.
With the move to the new kennel, we
lost a storage facility for our
equipment. Fortunately, an almost
new enclosed trailer was donated to
AGR; long time supporter Jerry
Tucker provided the means to get our
newly designed logo applied to it.
The trailer doubles as a storage
facility and transport of AGR supplies
to events, such as dog washes.
President’s State of the Organization 2
Financially, AGR is doing well. Donations continue to come in. Our
grant writers are outdoing themselves and securing some significant
grants. The fund raising/events committee, directed by Angy
Shearer, has put on several profitable events, the last of which, Fall
Fest, brought in over $5500 for AGR. Since AGR has no employees,
and has no real estate overhead, all funds received by AGR go to
the dogs. Thanks to new Treasurer, Tannya Gaxiola, we have our
finances in order.
To date, AGR has placed over 98 deserving dogs in their forever
homes. Lisa Zamudio, Cheryl Bennett, and their teams have done
wonderful job of processing adoptions and getting homes for the
dogs. We also want to welcome Dawn Heinemann as Animal Care
Director to AGR’s board.
New Communications Director Tuyen Lam, assisted by Chris
Gomez, are instrumental in making sure all the AGR volunteers and
interested parties are being kept up to date in what’s going on, and
upcoming events.
I want to recognize all the kennel folk, the foster parents, the tablers,
and furkid parents for working so hard, and giving so much to get the
dogs in a home.
As you know, AGR is completely volunteer based. We are a team,
with each of us contributing our time and service. It’s this team of
volunteers that make AGR work. Each of you perform a service for
AGR, and all these services contribute to AGR’s success. The Board
is extremely aware of all you do, and realizes that we couldn’t do this
without all of you. Each of you has the gratitude of all the other
volunteers, including the Board, and specifically me, for all you do.
Arizona Greyhound Rescue is the leading greyhound adoption effort
in southern Arizona, and possibly in the state. Thank you again for all
you do.
I wish you all a happy new year, and let you know that it remains my
goal to make AGR a continuing success.
Bill Nunn, and furkids Hawk and Tawni
3 Forever Home List
41 greyhounds found their homes between August and December, making
a total of 98 adoptions in 2010. In our 2nd Home for the Holidays
campaign, there were 15 greys that were given the best gift ever for the
holidays – a forever home!
Rebound numbers are low, only 7 compared to 9-12 or more in past years.
This means AGR is doing a good job of screening, educating, and giving
adopters the resources to successfully transition their greyhound into their
new homes.
Congratulations to these greyhounds who went to their forever homes and
to the wonderful people who adopted them!

Available Dogs Spotlight 4
Sunshine Color: Red Age: 8 years
Cats: No Small-Dogs: No Small-Children: Yes
A former brood mom, Sunshine is finally getting some personal
TLC from her foster guardians and loving every minute. She
does not steal food or climb on furniture. Sunshine mostly
sleeps, but has spurts of playful energy when she pounces on
her toys. Sunshine loves people and is now becoming eager to
meet other dogs at the doggie park. Initially, Sunshine was a
little anxious when left alone, but she has since become more
comfortable and her fosters leave a Kong toy to keep her
occupied. Sunshine is house trained with no doggie door,
rarely barks, and hops right up whenever she hears the leash
jiggle.
Josh Color: Black Age: 3 years
Cats: No Small-Dogs: No Small-Children: No
Josh is a cuddle-bug! Even though he was taught not to get
on the couch, he insists on sitting next to you and putting his
head on your lap. He will get off the couch once corrected and
lay contently on his dog bed. Josh is very responsive to
correction while at home and out on walks. He loves meeting
people, dog walks, and to squeak and toss stuffy toys. Josh is
an affectionate boy who wants to be your constant companion.
His unique whine will give you a chuckle each time you hear it.
What Color: White with Black Spots Age: 9 years
Cats: No Small-Dogs: Yes Small-Children: No
What is a gorgeous 9 year old girl, white with black spots, who
has been returned to AGR. She had lived with her previous
adopters since she was a puppy, so she never raced. She is a
door greeter but does not jump on the visitors. She is also
dog-door trained and gets along famously with her greyhound
roommates. What has pannus and receives her daily drops
without resistance. Folks who have senior dogs say they make
wonderful companions, especially for other seniors. What’s
foster mom reports that she is the most affectionate dog she
has fostered.
5 Available Volunteer Positions
AGR is looking for dedicated people to serve as board members,
with the willingness to help the hounds and contribute to the success
of the organization. Board member positions can be both gratifying
and challenging, but knowing all the effort leads to happy, healthy
hounds is enough to continue the mission.
Interested candidates can contact Bill, our president, directly at
[email protected] for more information and an
application. We hope to see you on the board soon!
The Volunteer Director supports AGR by recruiting, training, and
assigning volunteers to assist in event and business activities.
The Volunteer Director also participates in each event to ensure
the volunteers are being utilized for the success of the event.
Volunteer Director
The Development Director is responsible for creating and
implementing the development strategy for Arizona Greyhound
Rescue. This position is responsible for achieving fundraising
goals and engaging sponsors in ongoing service activities.
Development Director
The Outreach Director engages contacts in business and outside
groups with the intent of making the audiences more aware of
AGR, its mission, and of greyhounds. There will be occasions in
which the Director will represent AGR to schools, civic groups,
and organizations.
Outreach Director
The Vice-President will assume the duties and responsibilities of
the President during both temporary absences and in the event
the position of President is vacated. The Vice-President assists
the President in duties relating to everyday operations of the
organization. Candidate must be familiar with the organization
through previous experience as a board member of AGR.
Vice President
Available Volunteer Positions
This year, three board members have retired from AGR’s Board of
Directors, Cheryl Bennett, Angy Shearer, and Jeanne Ribas. They all
dedicated their time and energy towards the success of the hounds
and the organization. AGR is forever indebted to their contributions.
These ladies rock!
A special “Thank You” goes to Angy for dedicating 4 years of her life
to raising money for the hounds. Her accomplishments are many,
and we can only hope the path she takes will have a diversion back
to us sometime in the near future.
Although Cheryl’s position has been filled by Dawn Heinemann, AGR
is still seeking to fill the Development and Volunteer Director
positions. Here are some highlights of what Angy and Jeanne
experienced as directors.
I really enjoyed working with a wide variety of people as
Development Director. I got to know volunteers from every area
of our program from fosters to tablers and turnout volunteers. It
never ceased to amaze me on how generous people can be
towards animals. The best part about raising money for the
greyhounds was you knew every penny was going straight to the
care of the dogs.
I think the challenges speak for themselves as a director---it's a
lot of hard work and you have to dedicate an enormous amount
of time to be successful in fund-raising.
Angy Shearer – Previous Development Director
For me, being Volunteer Director gave me the opportunity to go
to all of the events and meet many great people that I now call
my friends. These volunteers all share a passion for greyhounds
and an intense desire to make a difference in their
lives...fantastic!
Challenges? Just know that this position will keep you busy!
Because volunteers are needed for every activity, it kept me
hopping!
Jeanne Ribas – Previous Volunteer Director

2010 Fall & Winter Event Highlights
Greyhounds & Friends Fall Festival Fundraiser
Our 2nd Annual Greyhounds and Friends Fall Festival fundraising
event had the perfect weather, a great venue, and the most
important of all – wonderful people! The volunteers, rescue groups,
vendors, and attendees were all instrumental in making this event
the success that it was. Deanna Morgan, our guest of honor from
Fox 11 News, hosted our many activities and shared her own story
of her fur companion, Murray. Last year’s guest of honor, Heather
Rowe, also attended and showed her continual support for the
organization.
This year, activities included canine freestyle dancing, gourmet
pastry auction hosted by the personable Jerry Tucker, silent
auction, raffles, and a biscuit bake-off contest. Live entertainment
was provided by Degrazia Music while attendees shopped the
many vendors for the unique.
AGR would like to thank all in attendance and the Fall Festival
Committee, led by Angy Shearer, for making Fall Festival a fun
and carefree way to help raise over $5500 for the hounds.

2010 Fall & Winter Event Highlights 8
Santa Photos Fundraiser
Santa and Idler
What would a grey ask of Santa? More
biscuits? More toys? More walks? Maybe
we need to talk to AGR’s Santas: Luanne
Withee, Paul Athey, Doug, and John Clark.
With some of our volunteers as Santa’s
helpers, AGR took 70 pictures of pets and
people, and raised $350. Many thanks to
our volunteers and the people who came
to get their pictures taken.
Fall Dog Wash Fundraiser
In our 2nd dog wash fundraiser for 2010, we had a great turn-out
of 72 dogs and 7 volunteer groups. Dogs and people got wet for a
fun and great cause – to clean dirty dogs and give back to the
community. The event was held for the first time at the PAWS
Veterinary Clinic on September 11th, and raised $1702. Volunteers
who washed, groomed, and dried the dogs include:
Geico (for the United Way Days of Caring), Miranda from
Groomingdales, UofA Pre-Vet Club, Volunteer Center of
Southern AZ Youth Corps., Vision Quest, KALD (Kids
Animals Learning & Dreams), and JTED Agriculture class.
2010 Fall & Winter Event Highlights
Downtown Tucson Parade Of Lights
Equine Voices Open House
At the Equine Voices’ Open House in Amado, AGR
hosted a tent and had 6 hounds ready to receive
unabashed attention. Unfortunately, the weather turned
mid-way and blew the tents away! The event was still a
great success with an adoption and many potential foster
families. AGR would like to thank Dale Peters for
heading up this event and braving the weather for the
hounds.
Cat Mountain Station Arts & Crafts Fair
Cat Mountain Station hosted an Arts and Crafts Fair on Dec 5th. Jean and Dan
Williams manned AGR’s table, along with their greys Paris and Izzy. Carol Ray,
Priscella Chandler, and Sally Chandler were also in attendance. Raffle tickets
were sold and a gift basket was given away at this event. Jean reports she had a
busy time talking to the potential adopters and foster families. Come bring your
foster grey for the next event at Cat Mountain - it might find its perfect family!
Ironwood High School Fashion Show
This year, AGR was part of a fashion show held by Ironwood Ridge High School.
Valerie Pullara suggested the idea and coordinated with Ironwood’s Fashion
Design and Merchandising Instructor Sarah San Jule, to pair our dogs with
models in the Wearable Art part of the show.
Valerie’s grey Mr. Brown and Jean Williams’ greys Izzy and Paris wore beautiful
collars on loan from Greyt Escape, and walked alongside models wearing outfits
made out of any material other than fabric.
At the end of the show, Sarah pulled Valerie and Jean on stage and presented
AGR with a $500 donation! AGR has been invited back for the spring fashion
show, so keep a lookout for our email if you are interested in participating.
AGR once again was part of the parade! 18 hounds and
their families walked the 1.8 miles around Downtown
Tucson to the sounds of the holidays, sparkle of Christmas
lights, and the cheer of the crowd. The greys were a hit
with the kids, and a few even mingled with the crowds to
get some extra petting. At the end of the route, some
families came and asked about the greys, adoption, and
fostering. Join us next year for this fun event, it was a blast.
Thanks to Terry Baker for heading this up.

Forever Home Stories
Dogs enrich our lives by giving us companionship and protection. In return, we give
them the best care we can give. Here are 3 stories of how our adopted greys,
Drifter, Iron, and Rowdy (Daniel), have reciprocated gratitude for their new lives to
those around them.
Iron is our wonderful new child! He loves to sit
by the front door and wait for Mom or Dad to
come home and always greets us with joy and
wiggling! He has decided that our upstairs bed
is so comfortable that he waits for us to go to
sleep, with us in the room, and then takes a
pillow upstairs with him and settles on our
bed. The next morning, he comes downstairs
and is sleeping in our room on his bed as though
he has been there all night. A very smart young
man! He loves chasing lizards and has started
to give us a tongue kiss. We are blessed to
have him. - As told by Fran McPherson
Iron – Bed Switch-A-Roo
Drifter is a true “ambassadog” - his favorite thing
in the whole world (aside from a good nap) is
interacting with people. He lives the adage "a
stranger is just a friend you have yet to meet".
When we are out walking and see a friend or one
of his beloved neighbors, his whole body
shimmies, his ears start flapping up and down,
his tail starts whipping around, and he makes his
"Chewbacca sound" (half roo-half attempt to
speak like a human) in between great big toothy
smiles. If we see someone new, his excitement
is only slightly tempered and he becomes 75
pounds of love waiting to be unleashed. He has
an uncanny ability to identify people with hearts
as big as his and use them to practice his
Drifter – The “Ambassadog” Greyhound
leaning. Drifter's exuberance and sweet, adoring gaze have made him a favorite in
our neighborhood, the dog park and even at the vet's office. Whenever his
martingale and lead come out, he does his "I'm a lucky dog" dance, but, in fact, I
am the lucky one because at the end of the day when he settles in for the night and
wants to snuggle, I am the grateful recipient of his big heart and adoring gaze.
- As told by Tejinder Grewal

Forever Home Stories 12
We like to keep track of our adopters, the name of their fur kids at
the time they were adopted, or if a beloved fur kid has crossed the
Rainbow Bridge.
If you have moved, or changed your email address or phone
number, please contact Terry Baker who maintains our records and
provide him with this information. When a greyhound is lost or found,
it is vital to have the most updated contact information in order to
locate the owners. Don’t wait until your hound is lost to find out there
is no way to find its way back home.

As Members of the AGR Family...
I am so proud of Daniel and another wonderful
testimony for our precious hounds. I was walking
Daniel this morning and Daniel spotted
something. His ears perked up and he stopped
walking. I looked for what he was noticing, and
over in the dirt was a Chihuahua. I thought
maybe he had been hit and slowly approached
him. He opened his eyes and started to cry. As
we got closer he jumped up and started to run
away. Daniel walked behind him and started to
cry. The little dog stopped and walked right up to
Daniel. They went nose to nose. I tried to catch
him but he was so scared of me, but not Daniel. A
car was passing by and I flagged it down. The
young girl got out and I told her about the little
Daniel – Daniel’s Good Deed
dog (very skinny and no tag or collar). She tried to touch him, but to no avail. We
just let Daniel and him smell each other, and eventually I caught him by his neck.
The gal said she was on her way to work, but would take him to her house and
deal with him after work. Daniel and I were walking by her house on the way home
as she was coming back out of her house. She said she had put him in the
bathroom, and then said, “Oh my Mom said that was Daniel who helped you.” Yes,
everyone knows by boy! As we walk, he roos at those he knows...and this could be
up to a block away! - As told by Cynthia Guldberg

Sunshine’s Pledge 14
AGR and Sunshine would like to thank all who have contributed to
Sunshine’s Dental Fund. We currently have raised $3800 of the
$4000 needed to remove all of her teeth to alleviate her pain. This is
outstanding and the generosity of the community is always amazing.
Her story can be viewed on our webpage at
http://www.azgreyhoundrescue.org.
Sunshine’s story is an example of how much it costs AGR to provide
the veterinary care the hounds need for a healthy, pain-free
retirement. Last year, AGR paid over $41,000 in veterinary expenses
for the greyhounds. Veterinary care is expensive but necessary, and
AGR will continue to provide this service to the hounds no matter the
cost.
Each hound is spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and any known health
issues addressed before the dog is ready for adoption. The adoption
fee charged for each hound does not cover all of the initial costs for
its care. The remaining balance is paid by AGR. That is why we
need your continued support through donations and participation in
fundraising events to help the hounds receive the best start in its
new life as a couch potato.
If each of us receiving this newsletter donates $1, we would be able
to raise $1700 for the care of the hounds! That would be a fantastic
start to the new year. It’s a simple but great way to show that you
care for the hounds too.
