Hantavirus claims two in Sask. – take precautions Saskatchewan health offi cials are reminding residents across the province to take precautions against hantavirus infections. Deer mice, the animal that car-ries the disease, are present throughout Saskatchewan. There have been four hanta-virus cases reported this year, including two recent deaths. The most recent death occurred
in an adult in northern Sas-katchewan says Deputy Chief Medical Health Offi cer Denise Werker. “Seek medical attention im-mediately if you develop a fe-ver, muscle aches, coughing and shortness of breath within one to six weeks of exposure to mouse-infested areas. Symptoms of hantavirus pul-
monary syndrome include fever, muscle aches, cough, headaches, nausea, and vomiting followed by shortness of breath and re-spiratory failure. Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome is a rare but usually severe disease that can lead to death. Hantavirus is transmitted by breathing in contaminated air-borne particles from the drop-
pings, urine and saliva of infect-ed deer mice. “People should be aware of mouse droppings and nesting materials when cleaning build-ings,” Werker adds. “Take pre-cautions to prevent direct con-tact and inhalation of particles that may be contaminated.” There have been 30 cases of hantavirus pulmonary syn-
drome reported in Saskatch-ewan since 1994, 10 of which resulted in death. For more information about hantavirus and how to prevent infection, visit the Ministry of Health’s website at www.health.gov.sk.ca/hantavirus and HealthLine Online at www.health.gov.sk.ca/healthline-on-line.

She’s being compared to the likes of Natasha Bedingfield and Alicia Keys and very soon Yorkton and area resi-dents will be treated to her sounds. Now based out of Toronto, Candice Sand has come a long way from her hometown of Melville and even farther from her roots of classical instruction as she works towards the release of her debut EP with Kuya Productions Inc (known best for their work and success with multi-platinum Canadian record-ing artist JRDN). Sand, who left Melville about ten years back to study at Brandon Universty and later at Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton, spent the majority of her childhood immersed in music, receiv-ing private classical vocal instruction starting at the age of eight. Her love for music carried her to Brandon University’s Faculty of Music (Brandon, Manitoba) where she stud-ied Opera, and later to Grant MacEwan College’s Vocal Performance pro-gram (in Edmonton, Alberta) where she stud-ied Jazz and all contempo-rary styles of music with a focus on Pop and R&B. She developed a wide variety of musical skills
and after graduation, she turned her attention to songwriting and perform-ing. Sand moved to Toronto and immediately threw herself into the music scene. She began perform-ing frequently at several venues in and around the GTA, while also network-ing and co-writing with songwriters in Toronto, Vancouver, Los Angeles, and Nashville. By continu-ously performing and co-writing, she began to define and develop her own unique sound, writing songs with Pop elements and R&B grooves, elevated by her heartfelt lyrics drawn from her own per-sonal life experiences. As a result, she started to describe her music as: music to touch the heart and move the body. Late in 2012 Sand received two “Demo & Commercially Released Single” grants from FACTOR Canada and she immediately teamed up with the Grammy/Juno nominated multiplatinum writing and production team Kuya Productions Inc. Together, she and the Kuya Productions team dedicated 2013 to co-writ-ing and recording her debut EP. Her debut sin-gle “I Got This” on iTunes
in April 2013, paired with the release of the official lyric video (April 2013) and official music video (July 2013). The videos received thousands of views and following a tre-mendous amount of posi-tive feedback from fans and industry profession-als. Currently they are busy marketing the release of the debut EP AgainstConcreteWalls which came out July 29. Sand will be performing at Melville Community Works Saturday, August 30 at 7:30 p.m. (tickets are on sale at the Melville Community Works office $20. Visit www.bandsin-town.com/CandiceSand for more details. The performer says she still has plenty of family and friends in the Melville/Yorkton area she hopes will come out to enjoy the show. “It’s bonus of being on tour here because I get to see so many people that I love and haven’t had the chance to perform for as a recording artist,” she says.
From Melville to the big stage – concert slated
FORMER MELVILLE RESIDENT Candace Sand will be performing songs from her new re-lease Against Concrete Walls later this month.
Canada-wide warrant issued
RCMP have issued a Canada-wide warrant for a man they says could be armed and dangerous. On August 4, 2014 shortly after 3:00 p.m., Fox Creek RCMP offi cers responded to a complaint of a female who was abducted by a male with a fi rearm. The incident started at a business location in the town of Fox Creek and it took place between 1:00 p.m. and the time the fe-male victim managed to escape. The victim and suspect knew each other through business deals. As a result of the investigation, the RCMP have charged David James Rogerson, 49-year-old male of British Columbia and a Canada Wide warrant has been issued with the following charges: • Robbery with a Firearm, section 344 of the Crimi-nal Code; Kidnapping with a Firearm, section 279(1.1) of the Criminal Code; Unlawful Confi nement, section 279(2) of the Criminal Code; Assault with a weapon, sec-tion 267(a) of the Criminal Code; Mischief, section 430(3) of the Criminal Code; Utter threats to cause death, sec-tion 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code; Use a Firearm in the Commission of an offence, Section 85 (1)(a) of the Criminal Code; Pointing a Firearm, section 87(2) of the Criminal Code; Carry a Weapon for the Purpose of Com-mitting an Offence, Section 88 of the Criminal Code; Possession of a Prohibited Weapon, section 91(3) of the Criminal Code; Possession of a Restricted Firearm with readily accessible ammunition, section 95(2) of the Crim-inal Code Rogerson is described as: 5’7” weighing 200 lbs. he was last seen wearing a light brown jacket and blue jeans. He was unshaven. The public is urged not to approach him. He was last travelling in a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee black in color four doors, British Columbia licence plate 655 MPR. If you know the where-abouts of ROGERSON or have seen this vehicle, please contact the Fox Creek RCMP at 780-622-3580, your local police by dialling 911 or, Crimestop-pers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
Ed, my neighbor next door, was rather gra-cious to me last week. I think he forgot that he was talking to me. The last couple of weeks, I have been batting home run mistakes all over the place. A home run mistake is an error that everyone sees. Just as bad, others cannot believe you made such an obvious bungling of what you are doing. It is like singing off tune so badly that everyone else stops singing and looks at you in stunned silence. Home run mis-takes are impressive, and leave other folks talking about you for a long time. It is always good when others make the glaring botch ups. We all are comfortable discussing the bloopers other people make. It is really hard to face our own home run gigantic errors. My neighbor told me that I worried, too much as everyone has made more than their share of big errors. He said that all I have to do is to act as if I have no idea I made any mis-take big or little. Regrets won’t erase your goof ups. Folks, who like you, will see the error as a tempo-rary, unusual occur-rence. Those who don’t like you will be glad you look dumb. He ended his advice with his claim that most people are too preoccu-pied with their cell phone games today, to pay attention anyone else. He told me that he had read about the Selective Service System, in the USA,
that had sent out notic-es to more than 14,000 men that they needed to register for military service. The big error was the notices were sent to men who were born in Pennsylvania during the years 1893 and 1897. Not many of them were alive to com-plain about the mis-take. Folks like to hear about other people’s mistakes, but may feel embarrassed and refuse to admit to their own errors, acting as if, they don’t make any. Since, the Bible refers to God humbling and exalting folks, my last round of glaring errors may mean I have been guilty of an inflated opinion of my importance. Have I been smug, or conceited or boastful? Perhaps, I have been self-centered, opinion-ated and indifferent to the well-being of oth-ers? Facing up to my mistakes makes me more alert to my need to seek a greater char-acter of humility. Peter advises no less in his words, “All of you, clothe yourselves with
humility toward one another, because ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the hum-ble.’ Humble your-selves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.” It seems to me the majority of movies and television programs do not celebrate the char-acter trait of humility. The stars are usually bold, extraordinary, unashamed, boastful, pretentious, proud, superior or even con-ceited. The dictionary defines humble as not proud or arrogant, modest, gen-tle, ordinary, and unpretentious. In the Bible, Jesus describes himself as humble and gentle in heart. We are also instructed there to humble ourselves before God, having a humble and contrite spirit before Him. We are also to show true humility towards all other people and consider them bet-ter than ourselves. We are also to seek to live in humility, gentleness and patience. All three challenge me greatly.

YORKTON CADET NAMED BEST IN PLATOON – Cadet Kelsey Valuck of Yorkton was recently selected as the best cadet in 15 Platoon in the second intake of General Military Training at Vernon (British Columbia) Army Cadet Summer Training Centre. Cadet Valuck is a member of 2834 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps, Yorkton, Saskatchewan. Valuck and 170 other army cadets attended the Army Cadet General Military Training Course which sees the cadets introduced to communal living, participate in an overnight Basic Trades Field Exercise (although a summer storm wiped out the exercise for the cadets this year), chal-lenge the mini confidence course, improve their accuracy with the air rifle, take part in a summer biathlon, learn orienteering and receive information on more senior cours-es that will be available to them in the com-ing years. During the summer, more than 1,200 Army Cadets from western Canada will
have spent up to six weeks in the Okanagan Valley training centre, expanding the train-ing they receive at their home corps, developing new skills and forming friend-ships. The Cadet Program is a national pro-gram for young Canadians aged 12 to 18 who are interested in participating in a variety of fun, challenging and rewarding activities while learning about the sea, army and air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces. Cadets make valuable con-tributions to Canadian society on a daily basis in terms of environmental, citizen-ship and community activities. Cadets also learn valuable life and work skills such as teamwork, leadership and citizenship. Pictured above Platoon Commander Officer Cadet Riley McEachern (left) pres-ents Cadet Valuck with his recognition plaque as the Best Cadet in 15 Platoon at the Graduation Parade for the second intake of General Training cadets at Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Centre. – (VACSTC photo by Wayne Emde)

Four kitchen fixes for great complimentsSaturday, August 9, 2014 - the news review extra - Page 7A
No matter if you’re an aspiring chef or TV dinner connoisseur, if the look of your kitchen makes you want to dine out it may be time for an upgrade. The kitchen should be the heart of your home where you enter-tain, hold family meetings and even pay bills. So why not take it from make-do to magnificent?
Nothing reinvigorates a home like a newly remodeled kitchen, but it’s true that the costs to completely ren-ovate this room can add up quickly. In fact, according to the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA), kitchen projects can range from less than $20,000 to more than $100,000, so it’s best to think of renovating this space as an invest-ment. Here are five “must-do” updates that ensure your remodeled kitchen will earn compliments from anyone who enters.1. Faucet Facelift
The sink area is among the most hardworking of kitchen spaces, and the faucet in particular, gets the most grueling daily workout. Because of its constant use, updating the faucet will immediately improve the func-tion and look of your prep space.
To easily obtain a contemporary look in the kitchen, the new Tilt pull-out kitchen faucet from Moen is the ideal choice for homeowners want-ing to create a sleek and chic state-ment at the sink. Tilt offers compact, modern styling that works well in any size kitchen. It’s also offered in two on-trend finishes: Chrome and Spot Resist Stainless, which helps the faucet stay visibly cleaner, lon-ger.
And don’t just stop with the kitch-en faucet. Fixtures such as built-in soap dispensers or beverage faucets can further the functionality and improved styling at the sink. In fact, research shows that more than one-third of homeowners remodeling their kitchens are interested in bever-age faucets with filtration systems, as well as matching soap dispensers. Moen points to its line of soap dis-pensers, plus its Sip beverage fau-cets. Each is available in traditional, transitional and modern designs in matching finishes, elegantly coordi-nating with the rest of the space.2. Amp Up Accessories
Much like fashion, accessories can make a room. Think of hardware as the finishing touch to make your space feel polished, but also serve a purpose. To start, easily answer the age-old question: “Where’s the dish towel?” Most homes don’t have a convenient place devoted to hanging this commodity in the kitchen. For a stylish solution, install accessories such as hooks, towel bars or towel rings on the side of an upper cabinet, the end of the island or in other work areas. Next, think of the sink: acces-sories such as colanders and cutting boards can now fit seamlessly into the sink to help make meal prep and clean up a breeze.3. Enhance the Lighting
Lighting is a critical element in kitchen design, both for its decora-tive and functional benefits. But not all lighting is created equal; the best way to enhance the room is to install custom lighting to suit your kitchen’s needs. It can also make the space look roomier and more elegant. With styles ranging from incandescent bulbs with vintage glass shades to ultra-chic halogen cones, hanging pendants are popular ceiling fixtures
for the kitchen. For an instant update, install pendants over an island or countertop where the low-hanging fixtures won’t interfere with traffic flow.4. Add Personality
After tackling your kitchen updates, be sure to treat yourself and your kitchen to something nice. Adding something pretty like a bou-quet of flowers, new linens, or a bright new tea pot will bring life into the space. You can also jazz up your kitchen with lively artwork. Whether it’s a professional painting or fun vintage posters, artwork helps com-plete your renovation. For a more personal touch, hang a grouping of family photographs, or frame some of your children’s more colourful artistic creations for a vibrant and charming display.
Before starting demolition on your kitchen remodel, make sure the design is a reflection of you. By fol-lowing these five steps, not only will you have a kitchen that complements your lifestyle, you will also draw plenty of compliments from family and friends.
