2. In an effort to reduce the stress on freshwater sources, Chennai’s second tertiary treatment reverse osmosis plant was inaugurated in Koyambedu on Friday.

Inaugurated by Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, the 45 million litres a day-capacity tertiary treatment plant, built at a cost of Rs. 486.21 crore, will cater to the SIPCOT industrial belt in Irungattukottai, Sriperumbudur and Oragadam.

3. Riding on the success of the T. Nagar Pedestrian Plaza, Chennai Corporation plans 10 more such plazas in the city. As part of the project, the civic agency has identified 10 places includig Tondiarpet, Purasawalkam High Road, Anna Nagar 2nd Main Road, Thiruvanmiyur and Velachery Bypass Road.

The two companies proposed to invest Rs. 100 crore to convert petrol vehicles into electric autos, and provide job opportunities to around 5,000 persons.

6. Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami inaugurated Chengalpattu as the 37th district of the State. The new district has been carved out of Kancheepuram district.

With an area of over 2,950 sq. km and a population of 25.56 lakh, the new district will have Chengalpattu as its headquarters.

It will have three revenue divisions of Chengalpattu, Madurantakam and Tambaram and eight taluks of Thirukkazhikundram, Chengalpattu, Madurantakam, Cheyyur, Tiruporur, Tambaram, Pallavaram, and Vandalur; 40 firkas, 636 revenue villages; eight municipalities, eight panchayat unions, 12 town panchayats, and 359 panchayats.

The Chief Minister announced that a “Medipark” will be set up to manufacture medical equipment in the district.

Sri Lanka to get $50 mn to fight terror

India and Sri Lanka agreed to cooperate on counter-terrorism during talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting President Gotabaya Rajapaksa here on Friday. As part of this common strategy, India announced a special Line of Credit of $50 million for strengthening Sri Lanka’s abilities to counter terror threats.

This was in addition to the $400 million Line of Credit that India announced for infrastructure development in the island nation.
