It was a sporty celebration as the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) celebrated their 46th Anniversary. Held on 1st September 2014, the event was officiated by General Hoo Cher Mou, Chief of Air Force at the Air Force Training Command. MG Hoo presented cheques to various charity organisations supported by the RSAF, highlighting the Air Force’s commitment in serving the community. Mr Chan, President of APSN, received the cheque amounting to S$8000. Our heartfelt thanks to RSAF for their generous contribution.

On 2 August 2014 the Association for Persons with Special Needs organised a fund-raising event, made possible with the sponsorship of some 30 tables by Marina Bay Sands as part of their corporate social responsibility. We are grateful to MBS and all those patrons and contributors who helped to make this Charity Gala Dinner a success. We raised a total of $273,895.20

The funds raised will help us implement more programmes in vocational training, job placement and job support. The Before and After School Care service at Chaoyang School will also receive funding, as well as social and sports activities in our schools and the Centre for Adults. We intend to build on the good relationship we have established with Marina Bay Sands. We also intend to apply through NCSS for the dollar-to-dollar matching grant, thereby doubling our funds raised.

Before dinner, whilst guests were having mocktails, the Chaoyang School choir gave renditions of “You raised me up” by Josh Groban and “Count on me” by Bruno Mars. During dinner, the other APSN schools also entertained with song and dance. There was also a magic show by a guest entertainer. Altogether the evening at MBS was most enjoyable.

AFID Board MeetingThe mid-term Executive Board Meeting of the Asian Federation on Intellectual Disabilities (AFID) was held in Sri Lanka at the Mount Lavinia Hotel (Colombo) from 15 - 16 August 2014. Dr Francis C. Chen (Honorary AFID Member) attended.Amongst the matters discussed were the following :

Collaboration with UNICEF------------------------------------A proposal by AFID-India on possible support services with UNICEF-India was adopted. A working paper will be submitted to the Board for consideration at its meeting next year. This has the potential of enlarging the membership base of AFID.

(1) The dates for the 22nd Asian Conference on Intellectual Disabilities (or 22nd AFID Conference) are from 3 to 7 October 2015. All are welcome to attend. (2) The venue for the Conference shall be the Sri Lankan Foundation at No 100, Sri Lanka Padanama Mawatha, Independence Square, Colombo 07, Sri Lanka. This is centrally located in a beautifully landscaped garden overlooking the Independence Square. (3) The Conference registration fees shall be (for Early Bird):- US $275/- (Member) and US $325/- (Non-member).After July 2015, the fees will be US $325/- (Member) and US $375/- (Non-Member).For self-advocates, accompanying persons/parents: (Early Bird) US $200 and after July 2015. APSN Annual General Meeting 2014The Association held its AGM on Saturday 27 September 2014 at Tanglin School. The main item was the re-election to fill half the Executive Committee whose term had expired.

Mr Chan Chee Keong was unapposed, and therefore re-elected President for a further term of two years. The following were also elected unopposed: Dr Francis C. Chen, Mrs Ruby Cheah, Mr Bill Bowman, Ms Annabel Claire Moore and Mr Tan Cheen Chong.

Ms Kristin van Burm and Mrs Margaret Goh did not stand as candidates. Assoc Prof Mohan Menon had tendered his resignation.

The Executive Committee has the power to co-opt additional members.

Annual Dinner 2014The APSN Annual Dinner was held at the Hotel Novotel, Clarke Quay on Friday 19 September 2014. Organized by Chaoyang School this year, the theme was “Hawaiian Luau”. Participants came in their Hawaiian attire, and leis or garlands were given out, making the event a colourful one.

Mr Chan Chee Keong in his speech reviewed the state of APSN schools. The main item at the Dinner was the presentation of Long Service Awards, to both Staff and Volunteers. Staff received their Awards with cash bonuses from APSN, whereas the volunteers on APSN Management received their awards (no cash !) from the National Council of Social Service (NCSS).

CCA Annual Presentation On 13 September 2014, Children’s Charities Association (CCA) had their Annual Presentation at the NCSS Auditorium. The event was honoured by Mr. Christopher De Souza, Member of Parliament, Holland-Bukit Timah GRC who touched our hearts with stories about his personal experiences with people of special needs and disabilities.

This was just not a great opportunity for us to give out the awards to our fellow volunteers and donors who have contributed in our growth, but also to receive the funds raised by CCA for its six member charities. Dr Francis C. Chen represented APSN in receiving the cheque of S$693,255 with the other five representatives.

The APSN gold award went to Mr Lee Chuan Bee and the bronze award went to Associate Professor Mohan Menon, Mr Quek Keng Oei and Mr Royce Seah. The excellent service award was given out to individual volunteers Mr Aw Siow Siong, Mr Chua Weng Foo, Ms Yu Chin and Ms Loh Hui Ling, as well as corporate partners The Australian and New Zealand Banking Group Limited, Concorde Hotel Singapore, Keppel Care Foundation, Lend Lease Singapore, Marina Bay Sands Pte Ltd, Pizza Hut Singapore Pte Ltd, Raffles Girls Primary School, Republic of Singapore Air Force, Shangri La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort and Spa (Singapore), SIA 5Cs(Cabin Crew for Community Care), Sparkz and Urban Redevelopment Authority for their generous contributions.

Children’s Day with Far East Organization

On 3 October 2014, the students of Chaoyang School celebrated their Children’s Day by having a day of fun and games at the Gardens by the Bay organised by Far East Organisation. The celebration was honoured by Guest of Honour, Mr Khaw Boon Wan, Minister for National Development who presented cheques on behalf of Far East Organization to nine children charities. Mr Chan represented APSN in receiving the cheque of S$25,000 with the other heads of charities.

The CYS students were treated to performances by the Methodist Girls’ School and Singapore Symphony Orchestra, as well as a ‘splashing’ dance item by students from the Singapore Ballet Academy who danced to the familiar tune of “Under the Sea”, synchronised with the water jets in the water play area. The students immersed themselves with activities for the day which included balloon fishing, face painting and water gun shooting.utions.

Katong School gets industrial-grade kitchens

On 3 September 2014, APSN Katong School and Marina Bay Sands celebrated the opening of 2 Food and Beverage Training Rooms at 900 New Upper Changi Road. The Guest of Honour for the Opening Ceremony was Dr Mohd Maliki Osman, Mayor of South East Community Development Council, Minister of State for Defense and National Development. The $82,000 facilities and curriculum upgrade marks a significant raise in the quality of vocational education for individuals with mild intellectual disability receiving an education at Katong School.

Mr Chan Chee Keong, President of APSN commented: “We would like to thank MBS for their generous donation to enable us to upgrade our domestic kitchen to industry grade. This provides better training in an authentic environment, to better prepare our trainees for open employment in the F&B industry.

We are heartened to be part of this collaboration between Marina Bay Sands and APSN Katong School, providing greater opportunity for students of the school to harness their potential to the fullest. Opening of the new Community Hub

APSN Centre For Adults is moving from 29 Jalan Tembusu to the new Kembangan Chai Chee Community (KCC) Hub at 11 Jalan Ubi by mid 2015. The new location will be shared with four other VWOs. A launch was held on Saturday,30 August 2014. Manpower Minister and Marine Parade GRC MP Tan Chuan-Jin officiated at the opening. He also gave a speech that highlighted the importance of the good work done by the VWOs at the new hub.

Participants later toured the premises occupied by the VWOs. APSN put up display panels to explain the work of the Association, particularly the Centre for Adults.

On 27 Sept 2014 Tanglin School staged a musical “Finding Harmony in M & M Land” at the Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ School. This was supported by the National Arts Council, and the Guest-of-Honour was Dr Francis C. Chen (Founding Member of APSN).

Guests from the Ministry of Education, the National Council of Social Service, APSN Management and staff and parents also attended. A total of some 680 people filled the Auditorium.The musical and an Arts Exhibition named “Imagining Harmony” showcased the musical and artistic talents of the Tanglin School students, and testified to the Association’s credo of “Towards Holistic Development of the Individual”.

On 7 Jun 2014, APSN organised a concert and carnival at Tanjong Katong Primary School. This is to raise awareness of persons with Intellectual Disabilities and to raise funds for the training programmes.

The organising committee is made up of students from National Junior College, Raffles Institution and public volunteers. There are more than 100 volunteers from Raffles Intuition, National Junior College, Anglo Chinese Junior College, Singapore Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic and many others corporation.

The volunteers helped at looking after the various games and food stalls, and as concert helpers, ushers and traffic marshals. There are also 2 concert segments with performances from APSN schools and guest performances. We raised a total of $75,222.90 through the event.

Fashion Steps Out 2014

Kindness kick off at 313

In early March 2014, Centre For Adults was invited as a Charity Partner for 313@Somerset’s Fashion Steps Out (FSO) 2014 organized by Lend Lease.

In conjunction with the “Great S’pore Sale”and World Cup, 313@Somerset transformed the atrium into a “Living Lounge” from 9 to 22 June 2014 to hold foosball tables, soccer screening, lounge chairs, photo opportunities and a “bar”.

From 1-4 April 2014, Lend Lease partnered with the centre to provide steam ironing, hanging and folding of clothing for the preparation of the Fashion Steps Out event on 5 and 6 April 2014. The 5 clients involved were very excited and looked forward to the project.

Lesner, Account Manager, of the event company (The Barnett Group), was surprised that the clients were able to complete the task. Initially, Lesner wanted to employ part-timers to do the job but Lend Lease told Lesner to use APSN Centre For Adults for the job. Lesner was sceptical as he had never learnt of APSN before and whether the clients were up to the task. The clients showed determination and commitment as they worked non-stop for 5 hours each day and completed the task within 3 days, a day ahead of the original 4 days schedule.

ST. RAPHAEL OPPORTUNITY CENTER, TAINAN, TAIWAN

In June 2014, some staff from CFA visited St. Raphael Opportunity Center in Tainan, Taiwan as part of their holiday itinerary. “St. Raphael” is a day care center for children and adults with developmental or multiple disabilities from moderate and severe to profound support needs. The focal point of the visitation was the Vocational Rehabilitation Program, Vocational Training & Supported Employment Department.

St. Raphael runs a similar vocational training programme as Centre For Adults (CFA) like the contract work, horticulture, janitorial and kitchen operations. The average staff to children/adults ratio is 1:6. Many working tool gadgets are designed for the adults due to their disabilities.

Apart from those mentioned above, St. Raphael has a performing art team which will perform for all types of events (e.g. opening ceremony, festival celebrations etc.) for companies and will be paid for the performance. St. Raphael also provide car washing training for the adults and they have an outdoor café but the café does not have any walk-in customers due to the location and lack of public transportation.

The job placement for the adults with disabilities is very competitive and stressful. The adults at St. Raphael have to go through competitions with their peers; and only the fastest and most capable person will get the job. Adults who did not manage to secure the job will be counseled by the psychologist/ counselor.

Due to the lack of public transport in Tainan which may take up to 2 hours for a public bus to arrive, the adults with disabilities are taught to learn how to ride a scooter to work. Most of them are able to pass the practical test except for the theory test; the staff at the center will assist the adults to memorize the theory.

St. Raphael also baked their own biscuits, snacks and self-made chili sauce for events. The visitation has been an eye opener for us and been a rewarding experience.

My Nepal Experience: A Teacher’s Perspective

When we reached Nepal, local volunteers led us on a tour of the local streets, and helped us bargain for the best price in their local language, ‘Nepali’.

In the late afternoon of the 2nd day, we moved to Hotel Country Villa in Nagakort, which took a 2-hour bus journey. The uphill journey caused some distress in a few students, but the majority of us were smitten by the scenic view.

Hotel Country Villa greeted us with warm hospitality. Mr. Krishna, the

General Manager (GM) of the hotel, welcomed us personally, which touched

every one of us.

We soon started our vocation duties. Our students should be very proud

of themselves: they had transferred their Vocational Training skills and

good behaviour in a totally foreign setting. Being in a different country, the

standard work procedures were totally different. Yet, they adopted a “Do

what the Romans do, when you are in Rome” and adapted to the local style.

For me, having experienced Nepal, the memories

went beyond its natural beauty. Having interacted

with the people and understand their simple lifestyle, I

consider myself very fortunate, in more than one way.

In my view, for our students, the trip was indeed an

eye-opener which made them realise that having less

is not such a bad thing after all!

Compared to a few blackouts daily, and using only bottled water to brush teeth, students felt far more fortunate

to be supported with stable infrastructure and basic needs in Singapore. Our students also empathised with

the villagers who bathed without heater, have no electricity supply and no internet facility. They shared that

they wanted to be more mindful with using water and electricity when they are back in Singapore.

F&B’s Charity Ways

Each participating student received a voucher worth $150, given to 30 needy families together with

food items yearly by a group of anonymous donors.

The success of the Cookie Making Workshop spurred the FB department to organise termly Charity

buffet lunch events at the Swenson’s training room in the school for DSS staff and invited guests. The

lunches garnered a total of $2125 and this amount has been donated to the School’s Needy Students’

Fund.

In future, the F&B Department’s Charity efforts will grow even further with the opening of a food stall in

the school canteen.

The F&B department organised a Cookie Making Workshop for parents of DSS students. The

workshop was held close to Chinese New Year so that parents and students could make use

of the acquired skills to make cookies in preparation for the Lunar New Year Celebrations.

Youth Day CelebrationDelta Senior School’s Youth Day celebration was like no other. The school visited the Singapore Science Centre on the 4 July 2014 in celebration of Youth Day.

Students were tasked to do weeding, picking up litter and dry leaves in the eco garden as well as clean and pack the Science lab. Students and staff were then treated to a demonstration where they learnt how they affect the environment and the different ways to conserve resources. It was a great opportunity for the students to contribute to the community in a meaningful way!

Once again DSS’s athletes made us proud in their outstanding performance during the SPH Foundation National Para Swimming Championship held on Saturday, 10 May 2014 at Toa Payoh Swimming Complex.

Diversity in Abilities

Awards for Enrironmenttal Excellence @ TS

On the 28 and 29 August 2014, the participants of the Diversity in Abilities (DIA) programme, presented their masterpieces from the film workshop which was conducted over four months in Delta Senior School. The selected students were trained by an experienced Film Maker, Mr Sherman Ong, to transform their art work into a film which was then showcased over two days at Raffles Hotel, Jubilee Hall.

In collaboration with ITE College Central, Seletar West NC, Thomson Sin Ming Garden RC and Urban Redevelopment Authority, Tanglin School designed “Touch the Heart” garden display, an entry for the Gardener’s Cup. The Gardeners’ Cup was a friendly competition among Community in Bloom (CIB) award recipients island-wide to collaborate and set up garden displays at the biennial Singapore Garden Festival.

Accorded the Best Theme Award on 15 August 2014, “Touch the Heart” was exhibited at Gardens by the Bay. The highlight of this garden display was a pond filled with colorful stones that were hand-painted by members of the team and visitors. Besides the several photo opportunities with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Mr Heng Swee Kiat (Minister for Education), our students were engaged in active and purposeful learning.

To empower environmental excellence, several green spaces within the school compound have been set up. Students learn best when the skills are best acquired and generalized and practised in contextualized and authentic settings. Students have also acquired the habits of Choosing Green, Thinking Green and Growing Green. In recognition of the students’ outstanding contributions towards environmental excellence, Tanglin School was accorded the Community in Bloom (CIB) Gold Award on 24 August 2014, accompanied with a cheque of $500 by Nparks.

Passive to Active Creators with 3D TechnologyPassive to Active Creators with 3D Technology3D Technology @TS aims to enable students to observe and to develop higher order thinking skills. 3D Technology allows the use of digital tools such as the AutoCAD 3D software, iPads and a 3D printer. Students develop not only the digital skills but also soft skills such as problem solving, creative improvisation, cooperative learning and teamwork.

In 2012, ten Tanglin School students from the Multi-Media Club (MMC) participated in the Autodesk Panorama Social Project. It was an eye-opening experience for the students as they collaborated with “gifted students’’ from various countries on 3D projects.

Leveraging on the educational potential of 3D Technology to enrich students’ learning, a Beginner’s Module in 3D Design was offered to the Upper Secondary students of the MMC in 2013.

With positive responses from the teachers and students, the programme was further broadened and extended to all the students in MMC in the same year, i.e. Beginner’s Module for the Lower Secondary and the Advanced Module for the Upper Secondary students.

Students who had demonstrated keen interest in 3D designing were given further opportunities. They were provided with on-site work experience with the training provider Cadaq Pte. Ltd. One such work experience was facilitated at the Singapore Mini Maker Faire 2014, an event that was part of the Singapore Science Festival, in which four students participated. Since then, seven students are currently undergoing a one-month on-site work experience at IDA Labs, which began in September 2014.

We envisage that the incorporation of 3D technology will provide our students the opportunity to transform from passive learners to active creators.

Comchest charity show 2014

On 29 June 2014, seven students from TS LaTeens took part in the 15th Stardust Grandprix Dancesport Competition held at the Orchid Country Club Grand Ballroom. The dance competition was organized by Louis & Catherine Dance Studio. The students danced and competed in a Latin Cha-Cha number and brought home 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze medals in the Special Category and 4 Participation Awards.

The Cha-Cha is more than just quick moves and hip actions. It is one of the five main Latin Dance styles most frequently taught around the world. The steps are compact with a combination of the rumba and mambo. The basic forward movement is supplemented with various turns and slides. When the students have mastered the basic steps at beginner’s level, they are encouraged to develop and improvise their own dance movements. While the finale is a dance competition, the main emphasis is on students’ participation and enjoyment.

Dancing enhances confidence and promotes social skills. Students are able to express themselves creatively and it is a great way to stimulate the brain, enhance coordination and self-esteem in the most gracious way. TS LaTeens Dance Champions

Members of Guzheng CCA and Circus Arts were presented an opportunity this year to perform for ComChest Care and Share Charity Show held at Resorts World Sentosa. The event was telecast live by Media Corp on 27 July 2014.

Both CCA groups collaborated with Metta school in this show. Members from both CCAs spent many hours

practising. They rehearsed with Media Corp celebrities and instructors. Circus Arts members showcased

their skills in manipulating the diabolos. Guzheng members played and Chan Mali Chan.

The pupils demonstrated their resilience by

turning up for all practices. Mohd Arif from

Circus Arts shared, “ I feel proud to be part

of this show. I was excited to perform with

my coach.”

my first time performing for a live television

show. I was nervous and excited at the

F&B Training Rooms at Katong

7th Teachers’ Conference7th Teachers’ Conference

On 3rd September 2014, Katong School’s two F&B Training Rooms were commissioned. Gracing this ceremony were Dr Mohammad Maliki Osman, Guest-of-Honour, (Minister of State, Ministry of National Development & Ministry of Defence and Mayor, South East District) and Mr Robert Harayda, Senior Vice President for Finance (Marina Bay Sands Singapore), our corporate partner, who had generously donated $82,000 for the refurbishment of our kitchen facilities.

Katong School was one of the 4 schools led by SEB that participated in the Numeracy project

‘Igniting Counting in SPED students for numbers 1 to 5’.

The industrial standard F&B Training rooms will allow

for proper vocational training in F&B services. Katong

School is also working closely with Marina Bay Sands

to further expand our Work Experience programme.

The F&B students prepared a reception for our guests

who attended the event.

The initiative was presented and shared during the concurrent session ‘Designing Lesson for Learners

with special needs in Numeracy’ at the recent 7th Teachers’ Conference at Suntec Convention Centre

on 4 Jun 14. Participants included mainstream primary and secondary schools and the session focused

on sharing lesson design strategies to help students with special needs improve numeracy skills.

The session provided a good understanding of the application of pedagogical considerations to lesson

planning within the classroom for diverse learners.

Sports Fiesta

Although some of the skills sets were new and

challenging to the students, they approached the

games with an openness to learn and displayed

excellent teamwork and spontaneity. They were

rewarded with stamps exchangeable for goodie

bags containing a school cap and other attractive

items sponsored by NTUC Fairprice, ANZ Bank,

Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC) and

Haw Par Healthcare Limited.

The students will get another opportunity to revisit

the games during physical education lessons in

term 4. The event ended on a high note with the

prize presentation for the Modified NAPFA Awards,

40 lucky draw prizes and a closing speech by the

Principal to thank volunteers from the sponsoring

agencies.

Art Workshops

PATHS Workshop

In Chaoyang School, we believe strongly that the arts, be it performing arts (PA) or visual arts (VA), provides the platform for the expression of ideas, turn-taking skills and self-confidence, besides acting as an enabler for the development and acquisition of basic literacy, numeracy and lifeskills.

It is with this in mind that two 2-hour workshops were planned & carried out in January 2014 for teachers to learn how to conduct PA lessons following some basic guidelines such as tuning-in activities, games that encourage verbal and non-verbal expressions as well as lesson closures such as goodbye songs. With the same objectives, two 2-hour workshops were also carried out in April 2014 to get teachers to be adept at teaching clay-work art.

As Chaoyang continually strives to empower her teachers and staff, it is hoped that pupils on the receiving end will benefit greatly from this initiative to get teachers to be life-long learners with regular focus-group workshops carried out to heighten the teachers’ aptitude in teaching the arts or aesthetics to the pupils.

Since 2013, Chaoyang School started introducing ‘Self Control In Action’, as a modified approach used

within our existing social-emotional learning programme, PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking

Strategies). The school-wide approach aims to improve pupils’ self-regulation which involves self-

control and problem-solving.

A booster training session, to support teachers in teaching pupils how to problem-solve using the current strategy in

‘Self Control in Action’, was organized. The workshop, for teaching staff and professional staff, was conducted on 2

April by Ms Anna Sims, a PATHS Trainer and coach. The interactive workshop gave an opportunity for teachers to

go through the steps of problem-solving using their own real life situations. Some of the key strategies learnt in the

workshop are that pupils should recognise the problem, label their feelings and come up with a few solutions, to then

choose the best solution.

The Groovys once again outshined themselves at an event last May.Chaoyang school was proud to present Groovys as the guest performers at the ‘Public Service Observance Ceremony’! The Groovys were requested to perform by one of the agencies of the Community Chest; The Building and Construction Authority (BCA).

They were full of energy as they broke into their dance routine and received much support from the audience. They were then treated to a sumptuous buffet lunch where their stomachs were filled! They enjoyed performing to a fast beat and were well received by all in the audience thereafter. Groovys has indeed done us proud again!

Lifeskills DayThe theme of the Life Skills Day on 11 April 2014 was ‘Relating with others’. Pupils went on a trail of a variety of activities planned on the day. A social skills workshop was conducted by the teachers on the use of polite words and behaviours, and also on how to compliment friends using their name such as ‘Caring Carol’.

Pupils were engaged in station games where they did various hands-on activities which provided them with opportunities to practise and apply the skills learnt during the workshop. One of the highlights was making a cardboard ‘pizza’ whereby pupils wrote polite words on the paper ingredients to be pasted on the pizza. The final products were displayed in their classes as reminder for them to use polite words. To encourage pupils to work with their peers, the pupils from the AM session had a cupcake decorating session while the pupils from the PM session made sock puppets. Pupils were also involved in team building games.

CYS Sports Day 2014CYS Sports Day 2014 saw the pupils and staff gathered at the Yio Chu Kang Stadium on the cool Friday morning of 23 May 2014.

It was a colourful sight as pupils and staff had donned t-shirts of either yellow, red, green or blue houses sponsored by our long-time corporate partner EMC (Energy Market Company).35 events were planned for pupils, staff, parents and volunteers from EMC as well as another long-standing partner, Presbyterian High School.We were also privileged to have Mr Md Shariff Abdullah, Singapore’s very own “Blade Runner” to be our Guest Of Honour for the day.Even though the sky was overcast by the time event 18 was run,the rain did hold away, and we were able to complete 32 events altogether. The remaining events, including the Novelty race, were carried out the following week during our school’s CCE Assembly period.On Sports Day itself, what shone through was definitely the Chaoyang spirit of resilience and harmony which was witnessed throughout the day.

PATHS WorkshopThirty primary three students were invited to the SingTel Touching Lives Fund Cheque Presentation Ceremony at ComCentre on Monday, 31 March 2014. We were treated to a movie, titled “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2”, at the SingTel auditorium. Before the showing of the movie, we had a sumptuous McDonald’s lunch with a variety of snacks such as popcorn, candy floss and ice cream. Everyone enjoyed the animation movie, whereby laughter could be

heard throughout the show. Following the movie, there was a cheque presentation, after which we were then treated to a hi-tea buffet. All the students brought home colourful sculpted balloons!

‘Rapunzel’ Play

On the 14 March 2014, Friday, the Primary 1 and 2 Chaoyang pupils were invited to catch a play ‘Rapunzel’ at the DBS Arts Centre. This outing was organised and sponsored by the Keppel Corporation Limited.

The pupils were being paired up with volunteers from Keppel throughout the session. Therefore, the pairing provided opportunity for the pupils to interact with the volunteers. After the play ended, it was quiz time where pupils received gifts whenever they answered the questions correctly and followed by a photo taking session. Without a doubt, the teachers and pupils utterly enjoyed the entire session organised by Keppel. Keppel partners guiding our students to complete a post play activity

On 23rd May 2014, we had Sports day. We gathered at Yio Chu Kang stadium at 8.30am. We stood in our 4 Houses and had our March Past. After that, we had our Cheers. We cheered very loudly. Soon after, we started the race. We had 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m and Novelty Races. Unfortunately, it started to have thunder and rain. So we hid under the shelter, and sang songs. We were given trophies for showing Resilience during

running. We took many photos with our friends, and we had hot dog buns and milo. We enjoyed our food. When time is up, we went home. We felt excited and we had fun!-Tracy Lim 5 Responsibility.”

After that we had a show and tell about what litter we pick up and after that we head back to school.

The Beach Clean-Up

It was my first camp at Sembawang Adventure Centre. We took a bus to the campsite. When we reached there, we met the camp instructors. My

group name is Night wing and my instructor was Mr Redha. There was also Mr Erwin. Harun was the one who pick our group name. I didn’t like it.Next we played a game. I enjoyed myself because very fun to play. We had to step on foam pads to cross the room. My group tried hard but we didn’t win. But the next round, we balanced already and managed to win.We had tea break and I eat a curry bun and cake. They make us drink water. The curry bun was not nice, because I don’t like curry. I like red bean more.The next game was the hula hoop game. We had to hold hands. It was easy for me to go through the hula hoop. Some people find it hard.We went to the bunks and put our bags down. My bed was the top bunk. Then we go and bathe. I was lucky. I was first and did not need to wait for long time to bathe. The water was cold but I’m okay. After bathing, we had dinner. They teach us the food cheer. Everyone was very happy and noisy to shout loudly. But I was lazy to shout. I only ate egg and rice because I don’t like vegetable, it was oily.We go the basketball court to practice our cheer for the campfire. Other people dance, but I didn’t. Then we were the first group to perform. Everyone clapped for us. All the three groups perform and the instructors and teachers also sing and dance. Mdm Su, Ms Mardiana and Ms Mango went up to dance. Then we all did a funny dance where we have to put our elbow together.We had milo and biscuits for supper then we go to our bunk to sleep. But it was so noisy in the bunk that I cannot sleep. I only sleep 6 hours because they make me wake up from their noise. I was tired.Morning, we go bathe and brush teeth and then eat breakfast. After breakfast, we play the game outdoors. We played the puzzle pieces and I balanced on the tight rope with my group mates helping me. I was not scared at all. Then it was lunch and we packed our bags, waited for the bus to go home. But the bus tire punctured and we had to wait for another bus. I went home at 3 pm and slept early. I liked the camp very much.

On last Friday, we celebrated the Sports Carnival in APSN Tanglin School with ANZ volunteers. First, we played speed tag. The

coach told us how to play speed tag. Then, we had to take turn to play speed tag. After that, we had a recess time. The first game that we played was very weird because we have to run and hide at the obstacles and we used Nerf guns to shoot soon.Later on, we had water soccer at the basketball court. We listen to the instructions from the coach that how we played water soccer. It was super fun to play. Finally, we came back to class to change our clothes. We went back to the hall to say thank you to the ANZ bank. Then the ANZ bank gave us a can of Aquarius. We were dismissed to go back home. It was wonderful time we had.

My favourite part of the learning journey was when we were able to demonstrate our FB skills at Nepal. I learnt how to communicate better especially with the Hotel’s Manager. I also was glad that I was able to work and adapt even if I was in a different working environment.

I really liked their lemon grass tea. Nepal food is so different from Singapore. I am really glad that I get the chance to taste it during the trip. During our trip, the students learnt how to work in a team and how self—determination is very important. I also learnt how to appreciate and respect other cultures.
