County.
The contest was sponsored by the UnitedNations Cultural Committee, and the judgingtook place at San Jose Civic Auditoriumon Friday, October 2. Two weeks later, Pamand her two princesses reigned over theUnited Nations Cultural Festival at the Santa
Clara County Fairgrounds.
The festival, which was open to the public,featured a cultural exchange of food, dress,and customs. Mrs. Ronald James, wife of San
Jose's mayor, was the official festival hostess.
A new telephone system was put into serviceat the Memorex Santa Clara operations onOctober 19 and, as a result, the Company'smain phone number has been changed to987-1000. This is now the main number for
Corporate, Equipment, Information Mediaand International Group locations in Santa
Clara.
The Centrex II system is designed to meetthe Company's growing telephone servicerequirements, and should eliminate somepast problems with busy lines and switchboards.
An important feature is that each telephonein the Santa Clara buildings now has its ownnumber and may be dialed directly from theoutside. The new individual numbers are
listed in a telephone directory which combines all Santa Clara area numbers for the
first time.

Eastling Emmons
Five employees have been promoted to vicepresident of Memorex Corporation this month,and a sixth has been hired. They are:
John Eastling, vice president, EquipmentGroup. Mr. Eastling joined the Company in1967 after six years at Control Data Corporation. From 1967 until his transfer to the
Equipment Group, he was managing directorof European Operations, headquartered inMaidenhead, England.
He has an A.B. Degree in Engineering andApplied Physics from Harvard University, anda Master of Business Administration Degree
from the Harvard Graduate School of Busi
ness Administration.
William Emmons, vice president, Equipment
Group. Mr. Emmons came to our Companyin September, 1969, as director of FieldSales for the Equipment Group. In the pastyear he has organized an end-user salesforce and directed the opening of more than30 branch offices in the United States.
He earned a B.S. Degree from Boston College, and then served for four years as anofficer in the U.S. Air Force. Before joiningMemorex he was vice president of Marketingfor Andover Institute of Business. He has
also held management positions with IBMand Keydata Corporation.

Roland Jang, vice president, InformationMedia Group. Mr. Jang came to our Companyin 1966 after serving nine years as directorof Engineering for International Minerals andChemicals. He held the same title at Memorex
until September of 1969, when he was appointed general manager of ConsumerProducts. While he was director of Engineer
ing for our Company, Mr. Jang also servedas program manager for the European plantproject in Liege, Belgium.
He holds a B.S. in Chemistry and an M.S. inChemical Engineering from the University ofCalifornia at Berkeley.
Robert Jaunich, vice president, InformationMedia Group. Mr. Jaunich has been the Consumer Products marketing manager sinceJanuary of this year. He will direct ourCompany's entry into consumer productsmarkets. During the previous six years heworked for Procter and Gamble, and most
recently was responsible for creating anddirecting that Company's consumer marketingeffort for Gain Detergent. Gain is one of thetwo largest selling detergent products in theU.S.
Mr. Jaunich holds a B.A. Degree fromWesleyan University and a Master's Degreein Business Administration from the Wharton

William McCalmont, vice president, International Group. Mr. McCalmont joined theCompany in 1969 as managing director ofEuropean Operations. He replaced JohnEastling, when Mr. Eastling transferred to theEquipment Group.
Mr. McCalmont's responsibilities for Europeanactivities include more than 400 employeesin our Liege, Belgium, manufacturing plant,and sales and service offices in virtually
every country in Western Europe.
He served as manager of Northern EuropeanOperations for Control Data Corporation before joining Memorex.
Edward Phillippe, vice president and Controller of Memorex Corporation. Mr. Phillippeis the Company's chief accounting officer,
reporting to Gordon Pilcher, vice presidentof Finance. He will direct all corporateaccounting and internal audit activities, aswell as provide functional direction to the
accounting and control activities for theCompany's operating divisions.
Before coming to our Company, Mr. Phillippewas a partner in the accounting firm ofArthur Andersen and Co., and for the past

Company's First Consumer ProductsGo On Sale This Month
The Consumer Products Division opened anew chapter in the history of Memorex thismonth when it began limited marketing ofthe Company's first consumer products.
A trade show held at the San Francisco Air
port Hilton on September 21 and 22 introduced Bay Area hi-fidelity dealers to the newMemorex blank audio tape cassettes and
Va" tape on 5" and 7" open reels. Thecassettes are available in 30, 60, 90 and 120
minute configurations, while the open reelsare each available in three tape lengths.
The unique aspect of Consumer Products isthat this introduction marks the first time
Memorex products will be sold throughhi-fidelity stores, department stores andmusic departments.
Another unique aspect is that the productswill be heavily advertised in consumermagazines like Time, Life, Sports Illustrated,Playboy and U.S. News and World Report;
in specialty magazines like Coast FM andFine Arts, Saturday Review and High Fidelity;on rock, classical and popular music radiostations; on television sports shows likeNCAA Football, NFL Football; on television
action shows like Mannix and Mission Im
possible; and on talk shows like JohnnyCarson, Merv Griffin and David Frost.
At present, marketing will be limited to areasin Northern California, Washington and
Oregon, and the advertising campaign willsoon begin in those areas. Two of the firstads to appear are in the November 2issue of Life and the November 9 issue of
Time.
One of the nation's largest advertisingagencies, The Leo Burnett Agency in Chicago, is handling the campaign to take theMemorex name into millions of homes.
Among the well known accounts held by theagency are General Motors, Kentucky FriedChicken (Colonel Sanders), United Airlines,
The Pillsbury Company (Muffin Man), Procterand Gamble (Camay Soap), and the GreenGiant Company (Jolly Green Giant).

Visits Santa Clara Plants
More secret service agents and White Houseaides accompanying Mr. Ceausescu movedquickly out of their cars and were waiting asthe Romanian President's limousine rolled upin front of the Memorex building. Once inside, our guests were shown product displays
and then Mr. Spitters (speaking through aninterpreter) gave a brief outline and slidepresentation about the Company. Then, theRomanian visitors followed Mr. Spitters andseveral Corporate officers on a whirlwind tourof the tape plant and the Equipment Group'sSan Tomas facilities.

Display Honored
Memorex was honored as the company withthe best exhibit at last month's Canadian
Computer Show, finishing ahead of more than150 other displays.
Among the exhibitors at the show wereKodak, BASF, IBM, Digital Equipment,Hewlett-Packard, 3M, Varian and Xerox.
"The purpose of the award," according toJohn Greenhough, publisher of CanadianDatasystems (which sponsored the independent panel of expert judges) "is to encourageexcellence of marketing communications atthe show."

for visual impact, use of imaginative techniques, product presentation and courtesy ofsales staff, and the quality and effectivenessof the informational material being distributed.
This was the first Canadian Computer Show,and early predictions were for a crowd ofabout 5,000. When the final count came in,exhibitors found that more than 15,000 peoplehad viewed their products. One of the centersof attention was the Memorex display, whichincluded our 1240 Communications Terminal,the complete 1600 Microfilm System, 630 and620 Disc Drives, Astron, Quantum-CX andMRX-3 computer tapes, and the new ModularTape Storage System.
