MASSAGE THERAPY CAN BENEFIT JUST ABOUT EVERYONE @StAnnCenter Many people associate “massage” with stress relief… or maybe pro athletes. They’re not wrong! But massage therapy can be a powerful means of help for all of us dealing with conditions like fibromyalgia, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, after-effects of a stroke, post-operative pain, restricted range of motion, high blood pressure, depression and anxiety, diabetes, lower back pain, poor circulation and sleep disorders. As research supporting the benefits continues to grow, healthcare professionals are recommending massage to patients of all abilities. Massage can do for an immobile body what it can’t do for itself. “If someone has a spinal cord injury and is unable to feel massage on their lower limbs, massage improves blood circulation and can prevent other medical problems,” says Sandy Anderson, a certified massage therapist and vice president of wellness at St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care. “I’ve had people tell me after a stroke, ‘oh, you don’t need to massage my left side, I can’t feel that’ -- and I tell them, ‘just because you can’t feel it doesn’t mean it’s not beneficial.’” Also, she says, it can help people with severe contracture, such as cerebral palsy can cause, relax briefly before they contract again – and there’s relief in that respite. “Everyone with CP needs massage,” she says. People with disabilities can face challenges in finding a therapist experienced in using adaptive techniques – or finding an accessible location. Massage therapy school classes typically cover adaptive techniques on a limited basis, Anderson says; a therapist may accept clients with disabilities only after trying massage on a relative or friend with a disability.

In Milwaukee, St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care has offered a variety of massage techniques to its adult day clients for more than 20 years, as well as to community members of all abilities. Anderson says prospective new clients are often thrilled to hear the center has elevators and is accessible throughout. Working with clients with various physical and cognitive disabilities has honed the skills of St. Ann Center’s three massage therapists, who are prepared with a high-low table, a portable headrest unit, an assortment of beveled foam wedges, stools of various sizes … and their own ingenuity, experience in adaptive techniques and commitment to care. A client may need to communicate via an alphabet board, have a caregiver remain with them during massage or be massaged right in their power or manual wheelchair – none of it fazes the team. It’s worth checking with a healthcare provider to see whether massage could be part of an overall treatment plan, covered by insurance. But even if it’s not, people often find the benefits worth paying out of pocket. St. Ann Center massage therapists accept weekday appointments, at both campuses, at 2801 E. Morgan Ave. and 2450 W. North Ave., and Saturday morning appointments at the Morgan Avenue location. To learn more about the types of massage and costs, visit https://stanncenter.org/community/massage-wellness/. Or contact Anderson at (414) 977-5056 or [email protected].

12TH ANNUAL WISCONSIN VISIONWALK @fightblindness The 2020 Walk Committee welcomes all residents of Wisconsin to our FREE 12th Anniversary Wisconsin VisionWalk in Veteran’s Park on the lakefront in Milwaukee on Sunday, May 17, 2020. They hope to welcome over 700 people this year, and they are asking for your help! VisionWalk is in support of the Foundation Fighting Blindness, which is the world’s largest private funder of retinal degenerative diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa (RP), macular degeneration, Usher syndrome, Stargardt disease, and LCA. The Foundation has been part of some very exciting new research, which may someday soon lead to a cure for these diseases that affect more than 10 million Americans. Walk Chairs Kelly Savasta and Nicole Everson are supporting VisionWalk because the cause is very near to them, as they are both personally affected. Until the last couple years, there hasn’t been much promising research and potential for a cure. The Foundation has given them, and many others hope that there is a cure in sight. The 5K walk is a family-friendly event benefitting the entire state of Wisconsin and its residents, and is free to anyone and everyone, including pets! There will be bounce houses and giant inflatable slide, provided by Music On the Move Plus, the largest event management company in Milwaukee. The family of owner Taj Jordan has five members affected with vision loss and has jumped on board to provide much of the equipment for the walk. There will also be a lot of other fun stuff, including popular Milwaukee entertainer Eric Barbieri. VisionWalk will also have fire trucks, a face painter, mascots from area sports teams (Roscoe from the Admirals, Brad Beach from the Wave, and Star Wars characters), and a whole lot more. There will also be a free lunch served after the walk. If you would like to find out more about the walk, you can access through the Foundation's walk website at www.VisionWalk.org and go to the Wisconsin walk page. If you would like more information about the Foundation, and the 12th Annual Wisconsin VisionWalk, please contact Events Manager Steve Sroka at (847) 549-1477, or e-mail at [email protected] .

LET MCTS BE YOUR FREEDOM ON WHEELS IN 2020

@RideMCTS 2020 is only a month old, but our resolution to make transit more accessible is just beginning for Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS)! Don’t forget to Shovel! With the snowy season in full swing and Mother Nature reminding us who is boss, MCTS gives a friendly reminder and encourages all riders and residents to spread the word on the importance of snow removal at bus stops, as well as sidewalks and curb ramps. So far, everyone has done a superb job of keeping their bus stops clear, so keep up the great work! Just remember that keeping the ice and snow clear from sidewalks and curb cuts is crucial to people who have difficulty with mobility, as well as strollers and carts. The lack of a cleared path can prevent someone from even leaving their home, so remember to shovel and salt!! New Bus Stops Construction is now complete on new bus stops on Layton Avenue, between Howell Avenue and South 27th Street for Route 55. Construction continues on South 92nd Street for Route 67 as well as 87th Street in the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center. Freedom on Wheels Program Mobility Management Team staff will come out to your location (e.g., school, agency, senior center or residence, etc.) to present information on transportation, at no cost to your organization. Freedom on Wheels is a two-part presentation for groups of individuals that would like a comprehensive introduction to how to ride the bus:

• Part One is a classroom type setting, focusing on transportation options, acceptable fare forms, proper bus etiquette rules, safety concerns, trip planning demonstration using the Ride MCTS website and app, as well as an introduction to the Travel Training Program.

• Part Two consists of a demonstration using a training bus, which includes participants boarding an MCTS bus, using an MCARD on the farebox and how to use the bike rack. This is followed by a short

ride to enhance the hands-on-feel of riding the bus and practicing what was discussed in the classroom. This can also be done on an in-service bus with small groups.

** The Freedom on Wheels Presentation can be tailored to each organization's specific needs ** Don’t forget to “Like” our group on Facebook, “MCTS Travel Training,” and you can follow our outreach presentations, ask us questions and request an individualized or group travel training session.
