Group vows to fight state operating permit By Tim Hadac

McKinley Park residents who have been battling the owners of an asphalt plant at the community’s south end appear to have renewed their efforts as the spring approaches.

Members of Neighbors for Environmental Justice recently claimed it was their pressure (along with others) that prompted the Illinois Environmental Pro-tection Agency to resched-ule a public hearing they had planned for Jan. 29 to review a draft 10-year oper-ating permit for MAT As-

phalt, which has operated just south of Pershing and Damen for about two years.

N4EJ has long held that MAT is polluting the sur-rounding neighborhood, which includes the 69-acre McKinley Park and several grade schools.

In response, MAT offi-cials have not only denied the claims but insisted that its plant “saves taxpayers millions of dollars per year while producing more envi-ronmentally friendly pav-ing for Chicago’s streets,” according to a statement on its website. “Our plant equipment meets or ex-ceeds the latest air quality standards of the EPA and is the most fuel efficient, environmentally clean, and lowest maintenance design available to the industry.”

Bicyclist hurt in crash on KedzieBy Tim Hadac

Less than a month after police and others made an emotional appeal for a hit and run driver to turn him-self in, they were at it again with another case.

Last Sunday, CPD offi-cials released a statement saying they are looking for the driver of a car involved

in a hit-and-run incident that occurred at 2:20 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28 in the Gage Park neighborhood.

Police said that a 56-year-old man was riding his bicycle in the 5400 block of South Kedzie when the car’s door swung open. The bicyclist crashed into the open car door and was thrown to the asphalt.

Police said the driver of car did not give his contact information to the injured bicyclist, who was trans-ported to Holy Cross Hos-pital.

‘X Caucus’ key in Harmon’s successful presidential bidBy Jerry NowickiCapitol News [email protected]

SPRINGFIELD – Sen. Don Harmon (D-Oak Park) is the new Senate president, thanks, in large part, to a group of moderate sub-urban and downstate Democrats who quietly supported him in his months-long rise to the head of the chamber.

The group, calling itself the “X Caucus” is made up of “approx-imately 10 to 12” members de-

pending on the issue, said Sen. Michael Hastings (D-Tinley Park). He also noted the caucus sought certain concessions in backing Harmon, including in-creased power at the committee chair level and better “flow of information.”

“The X Caucus had an influ-ential role in the process,” Hast-ings said. “It’s normally not a loud caucus, but it’s an effective caucus.”

Hastings called the caucus, which also includes Democrat Steve Landek of Bridgeview, “a good group of commonsense, consensus-building legislators” who “don’t fit into the ultracon-servative or ultraliberal sects” of the Democratic Party.

In the end, their support last Sunday was unanimous for Har-mon, who had a 22-17 edge on his

opponent, Kimberly Lightford, D-Maywood, on the first blind vote that was conducted behind the locked door of the Senate president’s chamber on the third floor of the Capitol. Media and the public were not allowed even in the corridors outside the offic-es or the floors immediately be-low it.

After the closed-door meet-ing, there was no second ballot

as Harmon’s and Lightford’s camps reached an agreement that would make him president. Lightford will remain Senate majority leader, Harmon said.

The new president received unanimous Democratic support in a 37-12 vote with two Demo-crats absent and his predecessor, former President John Culler-ton, D-Chicago, abstaining.

Harmon took questions for just more than two minutes after

the vote, noting he had “a lot of work left to do this evening.”

“We’re trying to organize the Senate, we gotta meet with the staff, make sure everyone under-stands where we’re going from here, and things I haven’t even been told what they are yet,” he said. “I’m sure I’m going to learn on the way.”

He said the Democrats “built a

coalition ticket reflecting the di-versity of our caucus.”

Hastings said the eventu-al unanimous support from the Democratic members of the Sen-ate without a second ballot indi-cated Harmon’s “professional-ism” and ability to lead.

Aside from seeking rules to “increase chairmanship power” and the inclusion of “various cau-cuses” in leadership roles, Hast-ings said the X Caucus sought a “more inclusive” leadership ap-proach.

“Not that the last Senate presi-dent wasn’t inclusive, but a more inclusive approach toward what’s going on in the in the caucus,” he said. “So information flow was a very important topic when pick-ing a new Senate president.”

He said ethics would be “of top priority as well” moving forward.

Maureen M. Gibson-McCurrie, of the 3300 block of South Hamilton, was arrested by officers flagged down by a citizen who

reportedly recognized Gibson-McCurrie as the person who allegedly stole three statues from a nearby yard, back in September.

Reputed gang member busted after chase

An 18-year-old Burbank man was charged with reckless conduct after he was arrested in the strip mall at 8045 S. Cicero at about 11:50 a.m. Wednes-day, Jan. 8, after a brief pursuit by CPD units. Adeeb Bawadi, of the 5700 block of West 87th Street, who police said is an admitted gang member, may have fired a gun in the 8400 block

of South Kenton minutes before he was arrested. Police responding to a ShotSpotter report were flagged down by a witness who said that people in two different vehicles

were firing at each other. While police were speaking with the witness, a Nissan driven by Bawadi passed by. During the pursuit, somebody in the car reportedly flung a pistol out a window, into the street in the 8400 block of South Kilbourn. The gun, a 9-mm Ruger reported stolen from Indiana, was recovered, police said. When cor-nered in the parking lot, Bawadi allegedly refused to exit his vehicle and was making gestures implying he had a weapon in his waistband. Police performed an emergen-cy takedown, and Bawadi suffered minor injuries. Two 17-year-old boys in the vehicle with Bawadi—one from Oak Lawn and the other from Scottsdale—were also taken into custody and charged with reckless conduct. They are also admitted gang members, police said. Police recovered several shell casings from the 8400 block of South Kenton and noticed a bullet hole in the front win-dow of the 17-year-old reputed gang member’s home.

Flower shop hit by burglaryBurglars smashed the front window of R & D Raus-

ch-Clifford Florists, 3977 W. Columbus, entered and stole about $40 from a cash register, as well as about 20 stuffed toy animals. The crime was discovered by the owner, a 59-year-old man, at about 8 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 5. The victim told police that he discovered a brick on the floor of his business and that his cash register was not in the store. He discovered a trail of coins in his parking lot, which led to an adjacent lot, where the cash register had been dumped.

Woman flees, foils robbersTwo men tried but failed to rob a 20-year-old woman

as she left her place of the employment—the Nowobilska Medical Center, 5257 S. Cicero—at 7:07 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9. The victim told police that she had just gotten into her vehicle in the parking lot when two men opened her door. One said, “Give us your phone. Get out of the car. Where are the keys?” The victim handed over her phone but then ran across the lot to where her co-workers were sitting in their vehicles. She told them to call police. At that point, the would-be robbers sped away in a dark gray vehicle and headed north on Cicero. The victim returned to her vehicle and found her cellphone lying on the ground. Nothing had been stolen. The offenders were described only as black men.

Salvation Army rep robbed at Chase ATMA 27-year-old Little Village man employed by the

Salvation Army told police that he was robbed of more than $2,200 in Salvation Army funds as he stood next to am ATM at Chase Bank, 5687 S. Archer, at 10:11 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4. The victim told police that he was about to make a deposit when two robbers sprayed pepper spray in his face and then snatched a bag filled with cash, as well as his lunch bag. The officers were described only as black men.

Audrey Maher enjoys a relaxing afternoon tea with finger sandwiches

or pastries but had a hard time finding a south suburban estab-lishment that served one to her liking.

So, she opened her own earlier this month in Tinley Park’s down-town district on Oak Park Avenue.

“I’ve been obsessed with hot beverages for the past six years,” she said Friday, on opening day of the Pekoe & Bean Tea Room & Coffee Bar at 17028 S. Oak Park Ave.

“I would go a couple of times a year for an old-fashioned high tea, but there aren’t that many places in the area,” she said.

The Palos Heights resident set out to change that and spent a year looking for the right venue.

“I looked at six or seven properties,” she said. “What sold me on this location was the two private rooms.”

Pekoe & Bean has seating for 23 in the main tearoom and two private rooms for parties. One room can accom-modate eight people while the other can handle up to 22.

“The dining room, kitchen and coffee bar are 1,500 square feet and another 1,000 with the two private rooms.”

She said the main tearoom is cozy and comfortable with salvaged furniture from local resale shops and thrift stores.

“I want people to be able to come and relax and enjoy afternoon tea.”

Her menu features items found at most English high teas including finger sandwiches, scones, fruit, sweet rolls, jams, and clotted cream. They come ala carte or small plates. All served on fine china. There’s even a chil-dren’s menu and they get fine china, too.

“About 80 percent of the menu is baked in house,” Ma-her said.

Besides an assortment of teas, there’s also cappuccino, espresso, hot chocolate and coffee.

“We serve Rishi tea and Halfwit coffee,” she said. “It’s roasted in Chicago and is the best coffee I’ve ever had.”

Maher said she like downtown Tinley Park because it reminds her of her hometown of Palos Heights.

“I’ve always liked the Tinley area, especially the down-town,” she said. “There’s a lot of charm, a lot of history and I love the attention that is given to small businesses.”

Pekoe & Bean is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Walk-ins are welcome and they take res-ervations.

For information, reservations or to check out the full

menu, call 708-263-0098 or visit pekoebean.com.

Cook County approves incentivesThe Cook County Board of Commissioners last week

approved five proposals from President Toni Preckwin-kle’s Bureau of Economic Development that will provide tax incentives to businesses in Cook County.

The incentives, designed to promote economic growth, were approved in the following communities: Bridgeview, Chicago’s Garfield Ridge community, Chicago Heights, Harvey and Posen.

“Our tax incentive tools are used to either keep or ex-pand businesses in Cook County,” Preckwinkle said in a release. “The companies receiving these incentives, designated for either industrial or commercial use, have demonstrated their commitment to helping us grow vital communities.”

In Bridgeview, Tibor Machine Products, 7400 W. 100th Place, received a 6b Sustainable Emergency Relief incen-tive. Tibor was established in 1968 and is a contract ma-chined products manufacturer of parts. Products include steering knuckles, hydraulic cylinder components, rod eyes, rod ends, yokes, spindles, axles, shafts, brake drums, wheel hubs, trunnions, housings and more.

In Forest View, Liberty Property, 5063 S. Merrimac Ave., received a Class 6b incentive to secure industrial tenants to the site, who will likely be third party logistics providers and/or packaging and food related companies. The site will be designed to accommodate 284 car parking stalls.

Never mind that a cable TV subscription can cost as much as a car payment and is probably the most expensive utility that

most average Americans have today.Forget about the lie that they told us that when

you paid for cable TV you were paying for adver-tisement-free television that would give us more quality programming on the “boob tube.”

We can’t change the lies of the past. But we can at least recognize when we have been screwed.

What’s the problem now? Well, you may have noticed the rise of “independent” streaming ser-

vices like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and Apple TV. Or how many more cable channels that were once basic staples of ad-free cable TV are now spinning off and charging additional subscrip-tion fees to watch.

I was doing a little math and I realized that instead of paying $220 a month for Xfinity or DirecTV--I have both, one at my primary residence and one at a lake home--I could subscribe to all of the independent channels: 15 of them for about $170, a month, a $50 savings.

Netflix has jumped to $13 a month. Hulu is $12 a month. Amazon Prime is $119 a year, or $10 per month. Apple TV is free for a year when you buy a new iPhone (at $1,200) but is $5 a month afterwards.

Premium movie channels like Showtime, HBO, Cinemax and Starz can be purchased individually, too. You can purchase the History Chan-nel, The Movie Channel, Lifetime and even more.

Because I have an Xfinity account with Showtime and HBO, I can gain access to those streaming services individually; but they cost $11 and $15 each, respectively.

Worse is that channels and programs that used to be free on Xfinity Comcast and DirecTV now are additional fees to watch. Do you want to watch that brainless TV reality show like “Vanderpump Rules,” or old reruns of “King of Queens,” you have to pay for each episode between $3 and $5.

In fact, most past episodes of new shows that are free because they are being broadcast now also cost you extra money on top of the outra-geously priced monthly subscription fees you have to pay for cable.

Here’s the point: the cost of cable is outrageous, but none of the geniuses running for public office for president, for the Congress, for example, don’t care about it because they take donations from the cable company executives.

Try tracking them down. Donations are often made in the names of the executives rather than in the company name, so they are difficult to identify and tabulate. But they are huge.

Instead, these genius candidates for president and Congress want us to think that we should worry about a lot of other issues like abortion, gun control, taxation or uncontrollable immigration--all issues that will never change.

It seems to me that the costs of cable TV needs to be controlled and regulated. We have to stop these robber barons from ripping us off. For most families, and especially for senior citizens on fixed incomes who are not politicians with huge pension plans paid for by the taxpayers, home entertainment is about all they can expect for enjoyment. They may go on a vacation once or even twice each year, but for the remain-ing 48 weeks, they are sitting at home glued to the cable TV chan-nel--grumbling because no one cares about skyrocketing costs and new fees and charges that are being added to their bills.

It’s really a darn shame that this problem exists and there isn’t one smart person running for public office who also thinks it is a problem or who wants to do anything about it.

Instead, we get all the BS news about impeachment, like that’s going to help us control our bottom lines – it won’t. Or screaming about issues you and they know they will do absolutely nothing about.

Cable TV is one thing we can change and that we should change.

Gov. JB Pritzker regularly deflects questions about

House Speaker Michael Madigan’s future by saying he wants to let the investi-gative process work.

But during an interview with me to mark his one-year anniversary in office, the governor pointed to his reaction after Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) was indicted, now-former

Sen. Martin Sandoval’s (D-Chicago) Statehouse office was raided and now-former Rep. Luis Arroyo (D-Chicago) was arrested. In every instance, he said, he called on the legislators to step aside or resign.

When there’s “clear” evidence of targeting by criminal investigators, the governor said, “That’s the point at which folks should step aside.”

The questions aren’t new. During the sexual harassment scandals of 2018, candidate Pritzker was often asked if Madigan should relinquish at least one or both of his roles as House Speaker and state party chairman. He’d always defer, pretty much just like he’s done during the sweep-ing federal probe.

Pritzker’s latest answer, however, is more specific and allows him to set the bar for any showdown with Madigan, who surely seems to be on the federal government’s radar screen but for what nobody knows for sure. No crimes have yet been alleged. We know that some of his pals have been raided (including Mike McClain), but it’s still unclear what, exactly, the feds are looking at other than hiring Democratic cronies by the private company ComEd.

The governor also claimed that the constant drumbeat of scandal and corruption surrounding Madigan would not damage the prospects for his graduated income tax constitutional amend-ment referendum this November. One of the arguments the opposition has already used boils down to “Do you trust these Madigan people to do the right thing with the new tax and the new revenue?”

Pritzker said he didn’t think the two issues were related, prefacing his remarks by saying “we need to make sure we’re passing legisla-tion,” on ethics and reform and “rooting out these folks” with investigations.

“I think it’s fairly straightforward to people that I believe in a fairer tax system and so do a significant majority of people in the state,” Pritz-ker said. “So I don’t think it’ll have a deleterious effect in that regard.” I guess we’ll find out.

I also asked Pritzker if he planned to reopen the cannabis legalization law to expand it to oth-

er things, like, for instance, home grow licenses for recreational consumers.

“From my perspective,” Pritzker said, “we need to let this law settle in.

“We’ve got a lot of things we’ve got to monitor and keep track of to determine what other tech-nical changes may need to take place.”

One thing he wants looked at, Pritzker said, is setting up some sort of cash deposit program after reading of a recent burglary at a Chicago cannabis dispensary. Over $100,000 was stolen and police suspect it was an “inside job.” What to do with all that cash has dogged the industry for years because banks fear a federal govern-ment crackdown.

The governor also talked about what he is doing to help Downstate in the wake of a report that the region lost almost 120,000 people between 2010 and 2018. The previous decade was very hard on Cook County, which lost over 200,000 residents in that period, but now it’s Downstate’s turn.

Pritzker pointed to $420 million in the 2019 capital bill for high-speed broadband. Matt Schmitt led Minnesota’s much-lauded broadband build-out after passing the legislation as a state Senator and was recruited by Pritzker to come here. The governor said Notices of Funding Opportunities will be issued within the next six months “so that we can get money out the door to start expanding broadband.”

“That’s a big thing because you can’t create jobs in cities or towns where there isn’t high-speed Internet,” Pritzker said. “It’s in every business.”

He also said the state will help bring “tele-health” centers to areas with broadband service so that people can obtain video-conferencing health services like counseling and diagnostic care from providers who wouldn’t normally live in those areas. “People who have mental health challenges who require therapy, sometimes there aren’t qualified therapists in their area, so that’s an example of something that really does work, it’s got a proven history.”

Pritzker also said he was working to recruit jobs to the region and talked about incentives from last year, including the data center tax credit pushed by Republicans. “We’ve created a bunch of incentives for people to come to the state.”

“We’re going to do more,” the governor said. “Downstate revitalization is a very important program for me.”

JB signs bill restoring driving privilegesBy Peter HancockCapitol News [email protected]

SPRINGFIELD – Hun-dreds of Southwest Siders, among thousands of Illinois residents, who have had their driver’s license sus-pended or revoked for hav-ing too many unpaid park-ing tickets or fines for other non-moving violations will soon get their driving priv-ileges reinstated.

Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker last Friday signed Senate Bill 1786 into law. Effective July 1, it repeals existing laws that either required or allowed the secretary of state to sus-pend driving privileges for unpaid fines and other vio-lations.

Dubbed the “License to Work Act,” it passed the Senate on March 28 by a vote of 38-10. The House didn’t take up the bill until the fall veto session when

it passed that chamber on Oct. 29 by a vote of 88-27.

“With this bipartisan legislation, Illinois now recognizes the fact that suspending licenses for having too many unpaid tickets, fines, and fees doesn’t necessarily make a person pay the bill — but it does mean that people don’t have a way to pay,” Pritzker said in a statement. “We, as a state, have a vested inter-est in making sure all our residents who need their licenses to apply to a job or an apprenticeship program, or who already use their licenses to drive to work, to the grocery store, or to the doctor, don’t lose those opportunities because of a practice that reinforces cy-cles of instability.”

Under current law, the state can revoke someone’s license for having 10 or more outstanding parking tickets in one municipali-ty. It can also suspend the

license of any person who owes civil penalties or tax-es to the Illinois Commerce Commission or owes fines to the Illinois Toll Highway Authority for five or more toll violations.

Current law also pro-vides for automatic sus-pensions for committing certain offenses unrelated to driving. Those include underage drinking and supplying alcohol to a mi-nor, even if the offenders were not in a vehicle at the time; criminal trespass on a vehicle, even if the person doesn’t take control of the vehicle; and theft of motor fuel.

The secretary of state also has authority to sus-pend or revoke the driver’s license of any minor who is judged to be truant, de-linquent or addicted. The same applies to anyone judged to be “afflicted with or suffering from any men-tal disorder or disease.”

Those laws are now all repealed or greatly cur-tailed. Starting July 1, peo-ple whose licenses are sus-pended or revoked for those reasons will have their li-

censes reinstated.That means unpaid park-

ing tickets, toll violations, unpaid fees and civil pen-alties and convictions for motor fuel theft are no lon-ger grounds for suspending a license, unless the fee is owed to the secretary of state for the issuance of a license or permit.

The new law also pro-vides that liquor law viola-

tions can result in license suspensions only if the person was in a vehicle at the time of the offense. And criminal trespass on a vehi-cle can only result in sus-pension if the person took actual physical control of the vehicle. It also removes mental illness as a reason for suspending someone’s license.

“For years, Illinois has

held driver’s licenses hos-tage when people couldn’t pay excessive parking and vehicle tickets,” Sen. Omar Aquino, a Chicago Demo-crat and principal sponsor of the bill in the Senate. “That drives people into poverty and keeps them out of work. Using license sus-pension for debt collection is cruel, counterproductive, and frankly embarrassing.”

Suspended no longer

Gov. JB Pritzker signs a bill into law Friday that eliminates driver’s license suspensions for unpaid parking tickets and a host of other reasons during a bill-signing ceremony in Chicago.

Mah legislation gives longer renewal period for exemption

Homeowners who re-ceive the senior citizens homestead exemption this year will be able to keep that exemption through 2024 due to legislation sponsored by State Rep. Theresa Mah (D-2nd) and signed into law recently by Gov. J.B. Pritzker.

Under Mah’s House Bill 961, those who apply for and receive the exemption this year will not need to reapply for a five-year peri-od. The five-year automatic renewal period was previ-ously set to begin in 2021.

“The Senior Citizens Homestead Exemption can save homeowners hun-dreds, or even thousands of dollars each year, but is of-ten overlooked by residents who have lived in their home for decades. They may assume they are al-ready covered, or they sim-ply forget to reapply,” said Mah. “This new law will help ensure more seniors receive the exemptions for which they qualify, so they can continue to afford liv-ing in their home full of cherished memories.”

Hundreds of thousands of Cook County residents who were eligible for the Senior Citizens Homestead Exemption did not apply last year, according to the-Cook County Assessor’s office. Mah is serving her second term representing the 2nd District, which in-cludes the Chicago neigh-borhoods of McKinley Park, Pilsen, Chinatown, Bridgeport, Brighton Park and Back of the Yards. For more information, con-tact Mah’s district office at (872) 281-5775.

Whitney Young overcomes 18-point deficitBy Steve MetschCorrespondent

Whitney Young’s Olivia Vick may be a freshman, but she plays with the poise of a seasoned veteran.

Consider last week’s matchup with Nazareth, when the 14-year-old’s pre-cise shooting from beyond the arc proved fatal for the host Roadrunners.

Vick hit five 3-pointers in the second half, includ-ing three consecutive treys in the fourth quarter, to power the Dolphins to a 48-45 come-from-behind victory.

“She’s amazing and she’s a freshman,” said Young coach Kristen Harper.

Vick acknowledged she was “kind of off” in the first half.

“But once I hit the first three, I knew if I kept shooting it would get hot,”

she said. Vick scored a team-high

17 points. Her last three gave Young a 46-42 lead.

The outcome was still in doubt with 21.8 seconds left after Nazareth freshman guard Grace Carstensen hit two free throws, cutting the lead to 46-45.

The Dolphins’ Yas-min Mosi missed a free throw, and Nazareth got the board, hoping to set up the game-winner; however, Kaylen Evans – whose 17 points led Nazareth - lost possession as she crossed half court.

Young’s Kayla Green was fouled with 5.7 seconds left. Green, who scored 15, missed the free throw, but grabbed the rebound and scored to seal the win.

Vick’s sharpshooting capped a furious Dol-phins rally. Young (17-2) outscored Nazareth 33-17

in the second half. Green chipped in with 11 of her 15 points in the second half.

The Roadrunners (13-8) sprinted to a 23-5 lead and were up 13 at halftime, and by eight after three quarters.

Vick thought her team could win, even when down by 18.

“I have trust in my team,” she said. “I don’t think there’s anybody that can beat us, honestly, be-cause (of) our attitude and how we play.”

The rally was made more impressive as Harper only had eight players available.

“What’s good about our team is they recognized [Vick] was hot and they were looking to feed her,” he said. “That last one put the nail in.

“The first half showed us we have to be on our game at all times. We can’t be lax. Nazareth will lull you

to sleep running their sets, and they do it well.”

The Roadrunners com-mitted several turnovers late in the second quarter, allowing Whitney Young to trim the deficit from 23-5 to 28-15 at the break.

“(At halftime) I told them basketball is a game of runs. They had their run. Now, it’s time for us to have ours. One stop. One basket. They understood that and believed in that,” Harper said.

Nazareth has lost five of eight games.

“We have to pick it up now,” said Carstensen, who scored 12.

Whitney Young put the game away with an 18-7 fourth quarter.

“One of our problems is having tough times finish-ing our games. Once they started getting on a run, we kind of put our heads down

and we couldn’t get them back up,” Carstensen said.

“We just let the game slip away.”

seem Barakat (182), Jordan Sprycha (220) and Jamal Ali (285).

This season has been a fantastic journey so far, with more to come because we aren’t done yet,” said Spartans coach Stephen Long. “The kids, especial-ly the seniors, earned this. They have worked hard and remained focused on accomplishing this task all

season long. And to get it done in convincing fash-ion that left no doubt was incredibly enjoyable to watch.

I’m so happy for all those kids in the program for what they did for this school. “They’ve erased 28 years of futility and put Oak Lawn back on the wrestling map.”

Get Glenbard East’s Camryn Biegalski with 16th pick

The 2020 National Women’s Soccer League Draft has concluded, with Chicago acquiring forward Rachel Hill and making five selections.

The Red Stars began the draft by acquiring the second and third overall selections in exchange for allocation money and the fourth and fifth overall picks.

Chicago then acquired the 15th and 16th overall selections and allocation money from the Portland Thorns in exchange for the second overall selection.

They also acquired Hill, the 19th overall selection and a first-round selection in the 2021 NWSL College Draft in exchange for the 3rd and 26th overall selec-tions.

“I am really appreciative of Rory and the rest of the staff for bringing me in,” Hill said. “I know there is a great group of girls there, so I am really excited to get going. The fans are always awesome every time we have played there...you can always hear them. They’re great and I am going to work my hardest to do ev-erything I can to help the team.”

Hill was a two-time semi-finalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy as a for-ward for Connecticut in 2015 and 2016. She was selected 14th overall by the Portland Thorns in the 2017 NWSL College Draft and was subsequently traded to the Orlando Pride in ex-change for first- and fourth-round picks in the NWSL College Draft. Hill made 49 appearances with the Pride

over the last three seasons, scoring 11 goals. This past season, she had four goals in 21 appearances.

The five draft selections made by the Red Stars are as follows:

15th - Julia Bingham Defender, USC

Bingham played a key role in USC’s defense, posting a record nine shut-outs and 1.15 goals-against average. In 2019, Bingham started all 23 games at out-side back for the Trojans. Her defensive performance helped lead USC to a Na-tional Championship in 2016, NCAA second round in 2017, NCAA Third Round in 2018, and NCAA Quarterfinals in 2019.

She was named to the All-Pac-12 Third team and earned Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week honors. Bingham finished her career playing a total of 89 games with 85 starts, 10 assists, and 1 goal. Bing-ham was a member of the U-14, U-15, and U-18 U.S. Women’s National Teams and was also a member of the ODP teams for five years.

“I am so excited to be on the team,” Bingham said. “I can’t wait to start this journey with the Red Stars and I can’t wait to put in some work.”

16th - Camryn BiegalskiDefender, Wisconsin

As a key part of Wiscon-sin’s defense, Biegalski, of Lombard, started all 22 games in 2018, scoring one

goal with two assists. As a junior, she also started all 22 games in the backline for the Badgers. She end-ed the 2017 season with her first career goal against Drake and one assist in round one of the NCAA Tournament versus Toledo.

Beigalski finished her college career with two goals, six assists, 3,356 minutes of field time. Her noteworthy performance earned her second-team 2019 United Soccer Coach-es All-America honors.

19th - Zoe Morse Defender, Virginia

As team captain at Vir-ginia, Morse started all 22 games in the 2019 season. She led the team with 1,923 minutes total on the field, playing the full 90 minutes for 14-of-22 games. Morse helped Virginia solidify a record 14 shutouts, includ-ing seven consecutive shut-

outs in ACC play. Morse was selected to

the All-Region Second Team by the United Soc-cer Coaches, named to the ACC Championship All-Tournament Team, Co-SIDA Academic All-Dis-trict Second Team, and was Scholar All-Region second team by United Soccer Coaches. Morse wrapped up her college career with four goals, three assists, and 6,826 minutes on the field.

Morse was also a mem-ber of the U.S. U-17, U-18 and U-20 Women’s Nation-al Teams.

24th - Ella Stevens Midfielder, Duke

As a junior, Stevens played in all 17 games, making 14 starts. She led the team with ten assists, putting her 27th for her career, fourth all-time in Duke Women’s Soccer

history, and second in the ACC. Stevens was ranked seventh nationally during the 2018 season. This past season, Stevens started at midfield for every game with the Devils. She tied second on the team for goals, scoring eight, and first for assists, with six.

Stevens’ contributions were recognized when she earned United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Region Second Team, All-ACC Sec-ond Team, and all-confer-ence honors for her fourth consecutive season.

“I am excited, I really am,” said Stevens. “[Chi-cago] has always been a team that I’ve looked at and hoped that maybe one day I could play for them.”

35th - Aerial Chavarin Defender, Yale

Chavarin joins the Red Stars as a strong scorer. She kicked off her college soccer career with a unan-

imous selection as Ivy League Rookie of the Year. In 2019, Chavarin started all 16 games for the Bull-dog’s, logging 1,377 min-utes on the field with eight goals and one assist.

Chavarin has had 25 career goals, ten of them game-winning goals, 63 career games played, 55 starts, 12 career assists, and 62 career points.

Chavarin’s accolades include Ivy League’s De-fensive Player of the Year and United Soccer Coaches All-America Second Team. She was only the third Bulldog to earn All-Amer-ica recognition and the first since 2005. Chavarin was also a Three-time All-Ivy selection, including two-time first-team selection. In 2019, Chavarin was invited to play in the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Soccer Association Senior Bowl.

Fanter scores 17; Zobel nabs double-doubleFrom staff reports

Saint Xavier started hot and opened up a big lead early, then held off Gov-ernors State in the second half and won, 82-69, last Friday in University Park.

The win was the seventh straight for the Cougars (18-3, 13-0 CCAC), who were strong from the start on both ends of the floor. They held the Jaguars (8-12, 5-7 CCAC) to one field goal over a six-and-a-half-minute stretch of the first quarter while opening up a 25-6 lead.

SXU led 28-12 after one and the lead grew to as many as 21 points, howev-er, Governors State mount-ed a comeback that nar-rowed the deficit to three with 2:18 to go in the third quarter.

Saint Xavier opened the final period with five un-answered points and pulled away late, going up 73-60 on a 3-pointer by Fanter with 4:41 to play. SXU closed the game on a 9-4 run.

Chanel Fanter led all scorers with 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting. Three other Cougars scored in double figures: Maddie Welter had 15 points on 5-of-10 from three-point

SAINT XAVIERA Good Start

The Saint Xavier men’s volleyball team, ranked No. 8 in the nation, began its 2020 season with a five-set victory over 6th-ranked Aquinas on Jan. 17 at the Shannon Center.

The Cougars dropped the first set 22-25, won the next two 25-20, 25-22 to get within one victory of a match win, but Aquinas forced a decisive fifth set with a 21-25 win. SXU won the final set 15-13.

Outside hitter Grant Ooms had 15 kills and 15 digs in his first appear-ance in an SXU uniform, and three players finished in double figures for the Cougars. Kyle Springer re-corded 14 kills and Ben Gabor had 13 kills and a career-high six blocks. Libero Ryan Gossett tallied

nine digs, while setter Aar-on Kummer recorded 50 assists.

Looking to close out the match, Saint Xavier led 13-11 in game four, but a 6-1 run by Aquinas gave the visitors a three-point lead. The Cougars rallied to tie the game at 19 following three Aquinas errors, but the Saints closed out the set with seven of the final nine points.

The Cougars took a 4-1 lead to start the decisive set, and trailed only once at 10-9 Back-to-back kills from Springer put SXU back on top, 11-10, and the teams battled from there with Aquinas tying the score at 11, 12 and 13 – each time with a kill. Ga-bor set up match point with a kill at 14-13, and an attack error close out the win. Jags pounce

Jack Halverson scored 21 points to lead Saint Xavier, but the Cougars struggled to keep pace with the host Governors State Jaguars, falling on the road 94-79 on Jan. 18.

The Cougars commit-ted 11 turnovers in the first half, helping the Jaguars (13-6, 8-4 CCAC) build a double-digit lead midway through the first half. Saint Xavier (14-6, 9-4 CCAC) went nearly five minutes without a field goal in that span. Halvorson hit a pair of free throws that gave SXU a 15-14 lead, but the Jaguars went on a 16-1 run to take a 30-16 lead with 9:56 left in the first half.

The Cougars trailed by 19 at halftime. They closed the game on a 13-2 run but were never able to cut the lead to single digits in the second half.

Sophomore guard Josh-ua Evans scored 11 points and dished out a team-high five assists. Junior Calvin Payawal finished with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting in 14 minutes off the bench.

The Cougars return to the Shannon Center when they host No. 4 Olivet Naz-arene at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25.

They led by three after the first quar-ter and had built a 10-point lead by halftime. The Cy-clones outscored the Lanc-ers 22-11 in a decisive third quarter and built a lead of as many as 25 points.

Dontia Johnson finished with 28 points and seven rebounds. Jalen Hughes had a strong floor game, banking 13 with four as-sists. Back in the lineup, Shepard graduate Chris Harrison knocked down 26 points. Richards gradu-ate Trevon Jones added 14 points and nine rebounds.

A charged Cyclone de-fense cooled off the leading scorer in the NJCAA Divi-sion II from Prairie State College while earning their 15th win, 79-71, on Jan. 16.

The difference maker in the second half was fresh-man Nathan Purcell’s de-fense. Jalen Hughes led the Cyclones with 21 points). Moraine’s bench outscored the Pioneers’ 27-0. Ryan Saunders added 16 points and Dontia Johnson con-tributed 12.

“The conference has great coaches and talent, but our team has a great will to win. We need to play better and keep im-proving,” said coach John Chappetto.

Curie grapplers do well at city tourneyLooks like I’m pinch

hitting and handling the Ar-cher Heights/West Elsdon column this week.

Not a problem, because even in the dead of winter, there’s plenty to write about in these two great neighbor-hoods.

Congratulations to the Curie High School wres-tling squad, which after capturing the Red Central Conference Crown, last week placed sixth out of 46 CPS wresting teams vying for the city-wide championship. If you were to walk into the first-grade classroom at Catalyst Maria School, you might be surprised to see a Catholic nun helping some of the children. That nun would be Sister Rita Marie Kerdock of the Sisters of St. Casimir. (As I am sure you remember, the SSCs used to own the building when it was Maria High School.)

Approaching her 65th year as an SSC, Sister Rita Marie has no intention of retiring. During her career, she has been a teacher and school principal working in Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and here in the Archdiocese of Chicago at several schools including Nativity BVM. Now, for almost seven years, Sister has been working at Catalyst Maria as an instructional assistant.

“The best thing about the job is working with the first graders and watching them improve,” Sister said. She also went on to praise everyone at the school.

As if this job isn’t enough, Sister Rita Marie also works one day a week at St. John Paul II School as a tutor. Can you tell she enjoys teaching? What an inspiration she is!

Now on to the upcoming events: The Southwest Auxiliary invites all seniors to get out and join in an afternoon of fun and dance to forget about the cold and snow. The Winter Blues Dance will be held at the Southwest Regional Senior Center, 6117 S. Kedzie, on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 11:30 a.m. There is a suggested donation of $5 for this event, which will include lunch, entertainment by Karaoke Harold and a light snack.

The Community Cinema brings the 2019 Paramount film Wonder Park to the Chicago Lawn Branch Library, 6120 S. Kedzie, at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25.

Then on Sunday, Jan. 26, the film Las Sandinistas! comes to the library at 2 p.m. This film is presented in partnership with the Gene Siskel Film Center as part of the Panorama Latinx initiative. At the conclu-

sion there will be a discussion. Refresh-ments will be served.

The monthly Mass praying for the beatification of Venerable Maria Kaupas, foundress of the Sisters of St. Casimir, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1 in the SSC Chapel, 2601 W. Marquette Road. Celebrating Mass this month will be the Rev. Paul Whittington, OP. Re-freshments will follow.

On Saturday, Feb. 1, there will be a pizza party and training at St. Rita Church for both current and prospective altar servers. The pizza party will be held in St. Augustine Hall at 11:30 a.m., and training a practice will take place in the church from noon to 2 p.m. Training is mandato-ry for all current servers.

Now back to the 1950s: Last week Marilynn M. gave us a good brainteaser. She told us on the northwest corner of 69th and Campbell, the first building was a butcher shop and next door to it was a jewelry store. Both businesses had the same name. There would also be a funeral home on 71st Street later on with the same name.

While Jim L. grew up right down the street on Campbell, he thinks he might have been a little too young to remember the butcher shop and jewelry store but the hint of the funeral home he said warranted the guess of Petkus. He was right.

J & R Variety opened their first store in the 1950s in the 7000 block of South Western. Anybody remember the name of the variety store that preceded them at that location?

Sister Rita Marie is truly an inspiration

What’s old is new again, fondue making a come backI hope everyone has saved their avocado-green fondue

pots from the 1970s. According to several foodie maga-zines, fondue is making a comeback. I know what you’re thinking--Peggy only reports the most important and exciting news.

I got a fondue pot for a wedding present in 1977. I collected lots of fondue recipes and usually made a traditional cheese sauce with gruyere and swiss cheese. I cut up pieces of french bread for dipping. Food and Wine magazine recently suggested dunking steamed red potatoes and sliced pears.

We used our fondue pot all the time until it finally conked out. We even let the kids use it. What could go wrong? Hey, when I was a kid my mom let me and my sister, Patti, play with dry-cleaner bags.

Anyhoo, I thought about fondue because it has some-how been a recurring part of my life journey with my hubby, Roman. We celebrated our 43rd anniversary re-cently. In addition to thinking about the fondue wedding gift, I remembered going to a fondue restaurant on the North Side when we were dating. It was called, Fondue Stube.

On our 25th anniversary we went to a fondue place called Geja’s Cafe. It is in the Lincoln Park neighbor-hood. It’s been there since 1965. During our dinner there, Roman somehow slipped a lovely anniversary ring for me into an empty fondue pot. I thought that was so funny and romantic.

Now, fondue is making a comeback. What is old is new again. Hey Ro - thanks for always making me feel like

I’m still 19 years old.Ro and I haven’t been to West Lawn Park’s senior

stretch class for a while. We need to get over there soon! All are welcome to attend this terrific class every Tues-day at 7 p.m. at field house, 4233 W. 65th St. Call the park at (773) 284-2803 for more information.

Calvary Lutheran Church, 6149 S. Kenneth, hosts a chair yoga class every Wednesday at 8:45 a.m. The class is great for seniors and those with mobility issues. The class explores movement and gentle breathing. It’s only $8 per class. Call the church at (773) 767-7400 for regis-tration. All are welcome.

The next CAPS meeting for Beats 813 and 833 will take place at West Lawn Park at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28. One of the topics that may be discussed is catalytic converter theft.

West Lawn Little League will hold their first umpire training class at noon Saturday, Jan. 25. This training class is mandatory and will be held at West Lawn Park.

Call the league President Sergio Rivera at (773) 396-1579 with all questions.

The West Lawn Branch Library, 4020 W. 63rd St., will show the movie Bumblebee on Wednesday, Jan. 29 from at 5 to 7:30 p.m.

The library will be hosting a discussion about the book and movie, World War Z on Monday, Jan. 27. This event will take place at Palermo’s Pizzeria, 3751 W. 63rd St., from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Call the library at (312) 747-7381 if you have any questions.

The library recently hosted a book presentation by Mark Farina, author of the book Casey and the Flying Fortress. I mentioned this in a column about two weeks ago. I attended the presentation. Mark talked about how and why he wrote this exciting book about bravery and survival. He presented a slide show with lots of photos of World War II planes and pilots. This true story is about a Chicago man who became a bomber pilot in Europe during World War II. The book is available online at Am-azon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, and MarkFarinaAuthor.com. I’m glad I bought a copy.

Finally, welcome to new West Lawn restaurant, So-phia Tamales, 5926 S. Pulaski. This new eatery is open every day from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. I have read several good reviews about Sophia’s and I plan to visit soon. Dine in or to go. Call them at (773) 498-2050. Best wishes and good luck!

FRESH BACTERIA CASSEROLE. MMMM.REFRIGERATE LEFTOVERS PROMPTLY, AND KEEP THE FRIDGE AT 40ºF OR BELOW TO SLOW BACTERIA GROWTH.

Karen SalaGage Park correspondent5351 S. Rockwell St.Chicago, IL 60632(773) 471-1429

January is just flying byI can’t believe a whole

month has just flown by. It seems like only yesterday was Christmas. Looking around my house, it could have been because a lot of my decorations are still up.

Timmy is here for a sleepover, and I think I just might put him to work tak-ing some decorations down. He was supposed to come Sunday to Monday because he is off from school, but he called me and said Grandpa wants to know if he could come Saturday and stay until Monday.

It makes me feel good that he likes to come over. I was already told we are bak-ing. Who knows what else we will do?

I was having some car trouble, so I took the bus to and from work for about a week. I even Ubered by myself for the first time to chemo. The bus drivers are angels. Some of them go above and beyond their duty. It was so heartwarming to see how they take care of their passengers, espe-cially the elderly.

Over the past few months the Grouping and Discernment Team met to review the future Catholic parish structure of our area. All are invited to a community meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5 at St. Gall Church, 5511 S. Sawyer, to discuss the future of parishes in our area. Based on the Grouping Teams findings, they will present a recommendation to Cardinal Cupich and the Archdiocese’s Presbyteral Council.

There will be a benefit for Gage Park native Tom Salzburg and his ALS fight on Sunday, April 19 from 2 to 7 p.m. at Bour-bon Street, 3359 W. 115th St., Merrionette Park. There will be live entertainment,

raffles, split the pot, food, beverages and much more.

Tickets purchased in advance are $30 for folks age 21 and up, $15 for ages 5 to 21, and free those under age 5. Go to salzburgstrong.com to buy yours.

Tom is a devoted husband, father of three and grandfather of one. Tom and his wife, Kelly, have helped at many fundrais-ers for others over the years. They have been a staple at just about every fundraiser at St. Rene, St. Laurence and Queen of Peace.

This event is sponsored by the Salzberg Strong and the Blue Reckoning Law En-forcement Motorcycle Club. Even if you cannot attend, you can donate. They are looking for donations of all kinds, baskets, items to put in the baskets, or items they can use as prizes. Send an email to [email protected] and they will send you a donation packet.

Naomi is still trying to track down the infamous mailbox. Congressman Lipins-ki’s office has not called back yet.

Be careful when you are out and about. Dress warm and be aware of your sur-roundings. There is hope! I saw Primrose in the floral department at Jewel. I always say that when they start to sell Primrose, spring is not far behind.

Joan HadacSouthwest News-HeraldColumnist

Local libraries keeping things interestingAs the search continues for a new Greater Ashburn

correspondent, I’m filling in again. As usual, there’s plenty to see and do in the neighbor-

hood, so here goes!An adult book discussion will be held from 6:30 to

7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5 at the Wrightwood-Ashburn Branch Library, 8530 S. Kedzie. Join other readers as they talk about Linden Hills by Gloria Naylor. This Afri-can American class takes a powerful look at an affluent black community trapped by the American Dream. For more information, call (312) 747-2696.

Discuss an interesting book and eat a fine meal. The Scottsdale Branch Library invites readers and film-goers to a lively discussion of the book and movie World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks. It takes place from 6 to 7:30 Monday, Jan. 27 at Palermo’s Pizzeria and Restaurant, 3751 W. 63rd St. Set in the near future, one journalist attempts to capture the history of the war that raged against legions of undead monsters threatening to wipe out humanity. Max Brooks’ altar ego journalist interviews some famous names such as Alan Alda, Mark Hamill, Carl Reiner, Eamonn Walker and other survivors who formed the pockets of human resistance as civilization fell around them. It’s a real treat for horror fans. For more information, call (312) 747-7381.

A note from Jason Huff, president of the Scottsdale Neighborhood Watch: “As of today, (Jan. 18) we’re putting the Homeowners part of the group to rest and will solely focus on being a watch group and keeping the neighborhood safe through meetings and events. We look forward to helping people and promoting the neighbor-hood.”

With that in mind, Huff is inviting all residents to save the date for the next Scottsdale Neighborhood Watch general meeting, tentatively set from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 7 at Scottsdale Park, 4637 W. 83rd St.

Remember, if you live in the greater Ashburn area (which includes the Scottsdale, Ashburn, Parkview and Wrightwood neighborhoods), enjoy talking with a wide

variety of people and finding out and sharing news from the neighborhood, the Greater Southwest News-Herald is looking for a new Greater Ashburn correspondent.

We’re looking for a person who is active in the com-munity, is naturally curious and enjoys writing and passing along news—nothing big or earth-shattering, but rather the smaller stuff. You know, the kind of news that won’t make the front page, but which is just as important, in its own way, as the big stuff: birthdays, anniversaries, birth announcements, engagements and weddings—plus news tidbits from our local schools, libraries, parks, churches, Scout troops, Little Leagues, senior citizen clubs, veterans’ posts, small businesses and such.

Compensation is nominal. The real reward is writing and being published in one of Chicago’s oldest (since 1924!) and best neighborhood newspapers--as well as playing an important role in your neighborhood. Looking for a person to write a column monthly. If it works out and you like it, we could go to every other week or even weekly. If you want to give it a try, send an email to [email protected] and we’ll discuss things further.

I’m in a pizza kind of mood, so I’m heading over to Angie’s Sports Bar and Pizzeria, 8352 S. Pulaski. The food is great and the atmosphere even better. Robbie Corso runs a great place!

The CPD statement did not share the condition of the injured bicyclist.

The car was last seen headed west on 55th Street, from Kedzie. It is believed to be a 2008-2012 Chevro-let Malibu Sedan, black in color, with a missing left front hubcap.

Those with useful infor-mation to share about the incident are encouraged to contact CPD’s Major Acci-dent Investigation Unit at (312) 745-4521 and refer to incident number JC563142.

Coincidentally, the crash occurred literally hours be-fore a high-profile hit-and-run crash occurred just 14 blocks away, near 44th and California.

In that incident, Brigh-ton Park resident Efren Mendez, 73, was struck by a Jeep as he walked to Immaculate Conception Church.

He was seriously injured.Days after an emotion-

al press conference, a man turned himself in to police.

Authorities are hoping for the same result with the motorist involved in the crash with the bicyclist.

Outside the Walgreens at 55th and Kedzie last Sun-day, reaction was mixed.

“Yes, the driver should turn himself in, but don’t people riding bicycles have responsibilities, too?” asked Elzbieta Manka. “If you are driving a car, the law says that you have to be able to stop in time, even if the guy in front of you slams on his brakes or swerves or whatever. Should that apply to people on bicycles?”

Teresa Goss said she

does not “understand how you can fling open your car door, cause a man on a bike to be injured so bad he had to be taken to a hospital, and then just drive away. I hope they catch him.”

Juanito Jose Bendera said that as an avid bicy-clist, he is “tired of cars, SUVs and trucks pushing us off the road and onto the ground. It’s hard to ride a bike in Chicago. Cars are king in this town. You can tell by the ways the roads are designed and how the laws are written. By I do think that guy driving that car should turn himself in. It’s the right thing.”

A surveillance photo of the suspect car, provided by police.

businessman and developer Michael Tadin Jr., president of MAT Asphalt LLC, has said his company’s facili-ty is part of a considerably larger plan of his to bring as many as 5,000 new jobs to the McKinley Park and Back of the Yards neigh-borhoods over the next de-cade.

Agreeing with Tadin, to a point, has been 12th Ward Ald. George Cardenas, who has said that the plant and related developments “will pump about $100 million into the community…and bring new high-paying jobs, union jobs” to McKin-ley Park and other nearby neighborhoods.

Cardenas has crossed swords with N4EJ, tagging it as a single-issue advoca-cy group focused on MAT Asphalt to the exclusion of

other “quality of life” con-cerns.

In response, N4EJ rep-resentatives have posted a 2017 email they obtained via a FOIA request. The email, from a MAT attor-ney, appears to indicate that Cardenas was working with the city Department of Planning and Development to situate the then-proposed asphalt plant east of where it is now—a move that N4EJ officials claim “shows the city, Michael Tadin, and Ald. Cardenas were aware of the problematic nature of an asphalt plant across from a park and next to a school.”

Yet it was built anyway. In a statement regarding

the draft 10-year operat-ing permit, N4EJ officials said, “We’ll be organizing, and you’ll hear a lot from us…the IEPA has repeat-edly sided with polluters against communities. This latest action is no different. MAT’s operating permit

expired in July 2019. For months, the IEPA made promises: the draft permit would be ‘released soon,’ there would be plenty of time to prepare before the public hearing, N4EJ would be involved in choosing a time and a place for the hearing.

“Instead, they waited un-til two weeks before Christ-mas and sent out the notice on a Friday afternoon. They let MAT Asphalt operate with an expired permit un-til asphalt season was over. They picked a hearing date on a weekday in the dead of winter. They chose a venue that can’t hold more than 200 people, even though many people have expressed their concerns. They did not consult with N4EJ at all about the date or venue, despite repeated promises to do so.”

A request for comment from IEPA officials went unanswered this week.
