“Heads Up” - July 2015

Page 2: News from Yorkshire & the Humber Leadership Academy “ Heads Up” - July 2015

WelcomeWelcome to our summer edition of Heads Up, although the current temperatures and cloudy skies are more akin to autumn than summer!

It is hard to believe that we are already in the middle of the year and yet the amount of activity underway and planned for the coming months contained on the following pages mean we must be! I would particularly like to draw your attention to the Regional Leadership Recognition Awards, nominations are open and we want to encourage more nominations as we know there are lots of individuals and teams out there doing fantastic work that deserves regional recognition.

We are delighted to welcome Louise Barnett, Chief Executive of Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust as the new chair of the Regional Leadership Council. Over the coming months we will be working with Louise and other members of the RLC to improve how we engage with you our senior stakeholders across the region on the leadership development agenda.

Last week saw the announcement that the NHS Leadership Academy will move from NHS England to Health Education England as recommended in the Rose Report. The practicalities are currently being worked through and we don’t envisage any immediate changes to how the Academy operates or our work as a local delivery partner. The Yorkshire and Humber Leadership Academy is already hosted with Health Education Yorkshire and the Humber who support and fund our regional activity we hope over time the changes provide more opportunities to align leadership and organisation development activity to the workforce transformation agenda.

You may notice this year we have planned our activity much further in advance, so that you have more time to schedule and determine attendance. There is still more to come but we do hope these continuing small improvements help to ensure you and your organisation can optimise access to the regional development offers.

May the summer months offer some rest and relaxation!

Communications update

We are in the process of reviewing how we communicate with our stakeholders, and would appreciate your feedback on how you access information about our offer, and how you might prefer to access in the future. Please spare a few minutes to fill out this brief online survey before August 28th.

Two of our team have recently completed training for the new ‘Linked Up’ CRM, which we anticipate will be in operation from September onwards. Participants create an online account with us storing their delegate details securely, and book places on our programmes and events, without having to fill out registration forms for each booking. This will streamline the process for both us and the participants, and make it easier to report back to organisations on their uptake for our leadership and OD offers. We would appreciate your help in encouraging potential and future participants from your organisation to set up their accounts in advance of making a booking, and will send round details of how to do so in due course.

We have started work on pulling together historical data, to show our team’s work over the years with each organisation. This includes participants for all national programmes bar Edward Jenner. We will be happy to share with you in the coming weeks once completed and checked.

Co-Creation Network Summer Basecamp

2nd July we were delighted to host the third meeting, Summer Basecamp

at Horizon Leeds for 65 participants. It was a day of connections and

creativity, designed to leave participants feeling energised and ready for

action. One of the new attendees, Patient Leader Gwen Oates from

Leeds West CCG, wrote her own account of the day, “Committed citizens

Can change the world” which you can read here; a great summary of

the activity which took place from the perspective of someone completely

new to the idea of Communities of Practice.

Resources from the day can be viewed and downloaded here. Four new

Communities of Practice came out of Summer Basecamp and will be set up

on the Co-Creation Network’s dedicated website in the coming weeks,

adding to the 21 growing and maturing CoPs, and the 300 members of the

Co-Creation Network. Anyone with a passion for improving patient care is

welcome to join the Network, and join a CoP or even start their own. We

hope to host the next Basecamp event in early 2016. For further information

contact Lucy Scarisbrick, sign up for the Co-Creation Network

newsletter here, and follow the Co-Creation Network on Twitter.

Shadow Board Pilot Scheme

Does your Board struggle to appoint to certain posts, is your organisation developing new capabilities requiring a different kind of director talent? Are you an individual aspiring to a Board post in the next 2-3 years but worry ‘they wont want me’? Is your organisation seeking fresh thinking and new ways of working but finding it a challenge to make time with ‘business as usual’?

Our Diversity and Inclusion offer, Innov8, has partnered with the Inspiring Leaders Network and Finegreen to provide an exclusive Shadow Board opportunity. This pilot has been funded by Innov8 to develop an offer that aims to:

> Grow our own talent saving millions for the NHS,

> Embrace different thinking at a strategic level to improve

organisational performance on your most pressing priorities

> Diversify the emerging talent pool for the future NHS

The ILN and Innov8 are looking for 3 organisations to take part

in a one-year pilot exclusive to NHS organisations in our

region. Expressions of interest will be formally invited from

Chairs and Chief Executives; please contact Tom Lindley for

initial conversations and see the flyer here for further details.

Developing Coaching Capacity

Later this year we will be offering a series of local events for coaching leads from health and other sectors. The events will be designed to provoke, challenge and support strategic thinking and collaboration on how we make the most of our current and future investments in coaching. We are currently commissioning a provider to deliver this work, if you would like to help shape this work or perhaps host a local event please contact Amanda Allen. The two programmes are;

1 Manager as Coach & Coaching Conversations – Train the Trainer

The trainer programme supports delivery of coaching skills training and is best suited to organisations wishing to develop these skills in managers and others. This is not coach training!

The train the trainer programme is suited to coaches or facilitators wishing to develop their skills and access resources and support to deliver training.  Participants of the programme must have the support of their organisations and join the programme with a plan in place for the delivery of skills training in their organisation. The programme will commence in October 2015.

2 Developing Coaching Capacity

This is a facilitated process aimed at coaching leads from neighbouring organisations. The process will provide provocation and support to organisations in their consideration of how and to what ends they develop coaching capacity.  The process will be offered at locations throughout the region to encourage local cross sector focus. The process is intended to support shared learning, planning and collaboration between organisations. Delivery will be in October 2015.

GMTS update

The Graduate Management Trainee Scheme (GMTS) will welcome 11 trainees to the Yorkshire and Humber Region in 2015, specialising in Finance, General Management, Informatics and HR.  On 2nd July Yorkshire and the Humber Leadership Academy hosted an information session for both the Programme and Placements Managers who will be responsible for guiding our new trainees through their placements over the next two years  and helping to shape and develop the future leaders of the NHS.  The Scheme offers a fast track blended learning experience of rotational work experience across the NHS, professional qualifications and personal learning and development.

The 2015 trainee cohort were also invited to attend the

session to meet their new managers and start to shape

their orientation plans, and also to meet members of the

2014 trainees cohort who were eager to share their

experiences and offer advice and support.  The GMTS

attracts around 12,000 applications each year and

following a robust selection process, 100 trainees are

selected nationally for the scheme which has its official

welcome 7th September in Leeds.

For further information contact Deb Singleton.

Healthcare Leadership Model

There was good attendance at our strategic engagement event 7 th July and enthusiasm from those attending to make the most of the HLM to support leadership and organisational development. A key message was to not see HLM as a stand- alone model and to use it to help you do what you need to do.

Slides from the event are available here, and please see an interim summary of our organisational survey on 360 degree feedback and the HLM here. Page one lists actions including a Talent Management event in Rotherham on the 24th of November to share and learn with colleagues.

For further information please contact Amanda Allen.

Feedback from finalists and winners from the 2014 Regional Leadership Recognition Awards

@YHLeadershipOD

I was shocked to be both nominated and shortlisted. Receiving that level of recognition at a regional level made me incredibly proud of the work I do and the type of manager I am.

The Emergency Department is a very difficult area and getting time to make ‘things’ happen is a task in itself. So to achieve recognition for developing any staff group is an amazing achievement.

I felt really inspired and enthusiastic by all the nominees and winners.

I was really appreciative of the amazing support demonstrated to me by my colleagues in their nomination submissions.

It was an incredible honour to have been nominated for the NHS Regional Leadership award by my line manager and to have been supported by my institution.

Recognition that my organisation invests in its workforce and also takes the time to recognise good work and take the time to submit for awards.

Brilliant… to celebrate our collective success.
