A word from the Director...

Welcome to the newly designed ICT newsletter. Many thanks to Tammy and Holly for working

on the concept and design. I would also like to thank everyone in ICT for their contributions and articles. We hope you find the newsletter fun and informative. If you have any ideas, comments, or things you would

like to see in future newsletters, please send an email to: [email protected].

Over the coming months, ICT will be introducing new technology that will improve the computing experience at Maxwell, as well as contribute to the sustainability effort. We have recently introduced hybrid sleep mode on computers that are not used for remote desktop. This brings a computer’s power draw down from 75 watts to approximately 2 watts of power, resulting in a significant savings in electricity. We will soon be completing a project that virtualizes many of the servers, further increasing ICT’s cost and energy savings, while making them easier to manage.

During the holiday break, we will start converting many of the computers from Vista 32 bit to Vista 64 bit. The 64 bit version will not look or work any differently than the 32 bit version, however, because the 64 bit version can address more system memory, the computer will run faster. To learn more about this emerging technology, and to see how it is already being used here at Maxwell, please see our Faculty Focus page.

In the next issue, I will be introducing other new technologies such as thin clients and OnBase. In addition, I will discuss new multimedia and podcasting tools that will significantly improve audio and video recording used on the new Maxwell website.

In the meantime, we hope you enjoy the newsletter and we look forward to your comments and suggestions!

Mike FiorentinoComputer Consultant I

Mike has been with Maxwell School for four years. His

responsibilities with ICT cover quite a range. From management of domain computers, users, and groups - including Active Directory account creation, group policy, and general user file/print permissions - to management of shared drives/folders and quota with Windows 2003 R2. Mike administers the Maxwell print server, and provides hardware/software/network diagnosis, repair, and replacement to the Maxwell community. He is also involved in the repair and maintenance of media presentation tools in A/V equipped classrooms.

Mike is married and has three cats and a dog. He likes to hike and camp, and is usually reading (or listening to) two books at the same time - sci/fi, fantasy, or true organized crime genres being his favorites.

Staff Focus

Holly JohnsonAdministrative Specialist

Holly has been with Maxwell since April, 2008. She helps

coordinate all equipment and software purchases for the Maxwell School including departmental orders of individual printers, laptops, computers and software, as well as larger Maxwell-wide software and hardware purchases. This means a lot of records to keep track of - including the documentation of serial numbers, license keys or any other pertinent numbers (and there are a lot of them!) that allow the software to be used. In addition, she provides general administrative support for the ICT department (i.e.: budgeting, payroll).

At home, Holly is an avid cook and enjoys cooking meals from scratch using the things she has grown in her garden. She is married, has one dog and one cat. Holly and her husband are expecting their first child April 1st, 2009!

How long have you been at 1. Maxwell? Stuart Rosenthal has been with the Maxwell School for ten years.

How do you use technology in your research and/or teaching?2. Professor Rosenthal has been using new and exciting technologies in his work here at Maxwell - specifically, 64 bit technology.

64 bit technology increases a computer’s processing capabilities, and allows for easier multitasking. In Professor Rosenthal’s case, he is using a 64 bit computer in order to run larger, more complex datasets in STATA, a statistical software.

In his work, he often has 10 gigabytes (GB) or more of data to process. Before using 64 bit technology, data would have to be cut into smaller 1.3 GB pieces in order to be processed by STATA. While this data still needs to be broken up using a 64 bit computer, the sections are much larger than with a typical 32 bit computer. This technology also allows STATA to run smoother and more efficiently.

In addition, 64 bit technology allows for easier multitasking - permitting users to run multiple programs and windows more quickly, and without the machine freezing or hanging up.

Page 5 http://ict.maxwell.syr.edu/

Professor Rosenthal noted that one of the down sides to this technology is the cost of 64 bit software, which is substantially more than its 32 bit counterpart. Also, running 32 bit software on a 64 bit machine means that the software isn’t taking advantage of the extra processing power and speed. 64 bit software takes full advantage of this technology.

As with all new technologies, however, the more 64 bit computing becomes standard practice, the less expensive the hardware and software will become. And, as this technology becomes more common place, the selection of software available in 64 bit will also increase.

Professor Rosenthal shared that this technology has worked very well for him.

**ICT would like to extend our thanks to Professor Rosenthal for his participation in our first newsletter!**

The Global Collaboratory is an exceptional classroom that

is built inside a television studio, and is used for discussions and lectures. Those in the audience are drawn into presentations through the remarkable, but easy-to-use technology. Meeting face-to-face with groups around the world is possible over video and phone

conference. Flexible arrangements are possible to accommodate events from basic lectures and panel discussions to advanced multimedia presentations and intense executive training sessions. Simply stepping into the room instills a sense of professionalism that is unmatched in other classrooms.

In May, the facility hosted National Securities Studies with their annual Management Course. There were 26 individual speakers, a videoconference with the US State Dept., and a panel discussion in less than 9 days.

Recently, a handful of academic classes took place utilizing videoconference. This allowed students to converse directly with industry experts who would otherwise be unavailable.

In the next few weeks, a contingent of regional government officials from India will continue their learning experience, and some undergraduate Public Affairs classes will make impressive reports to local organizations.

For information on how to reserve the Global Collaboratory, please see our Additional Information page.
