Otten Appointed Professor of the History of Christianityand Theology

Willemien Ottenis a scholar of thehistory of Chris-tianity and Chris-tian thought with a strong focus on the westernmedieval and theearly Christian

theological tradition, including the conti-nuity of (Neo) Platonic themes. After hermonograph on The Anthropology of JohannesScottus Eriugena (Leiden 1991), she researchedtwelfth-century thought. This resulted in herstudy From Paradise to Paradigm: A Study ofTwelfth-Century Humanism (Leiden 2004),which featured, among others, Peter Abelardand ‘Chartrian’ authors like Bernard Silvestrisand Alan of Lille.

Underlying her historical-theologicalwork is a structural attempt to see the con-tribution of (early) medieval theologians as more than the sum total of ancient andpatristic influences. Instead, she wants toanalyze the cultural outlook which allowedthese influences to become woven into thefabric of an encyclopaedic, humanist tradi-tion, by which the treatment of theologicalquestions is embedded in the broader studyof the liberal arts. Pursuing this line ofthought, she is currently researching connec-tions between Eriugena and Ralph WaldoEmerson in their thinking on nature andcreation.

Evans Appointed AssistantProfessor of the History of Christianity

Curtis Evans is an American religions histo-rian. His teaching interests include AfricanAmerican religion, the intersection of race andreligion in American history, and churchesand the problem of social and political reform.His current book, The Burden of Black Reli-gion: Representing, Vindicating, and Upliftingthe Race, forthcoming from Oxford Univer-sity Press, focuses on cultural images andacademic interpretations of black religion

and their relation to ongoing debates aboutthe place of blacks in the nation. His researchemphases are the relationship between cul-tural representations and social scientificunderstandings of African American religionand culture, and shifting conceptions of thenature of religious and intellectual capacityas signal traits of humanity and their impacton discussions of African American culturalcapacities. His current (tentative) researchproject includes an analysis of liberal Protes-tant theories of childhood religious nurturealongside advice manuals, sermonic mate-rial, and instructional media on childrearingby African American religious leaders fromthe late nineteenth to the mid-twentiethcentury.

Hector Appointed AssistantProfessor of Theology

Kevin Hector does constructive Christiantheology in conversation with contemporaryphilosophy. Hector’s scholarship is animatedby three problems: the modern problem ofrelating God, the world, and human persons;the problem of metaphysics (and the dualisticpictures which underwrite it); and the problemof establishing increasingly just social practices.Hector has published essays in International

Edith Blumhofer is Visiting Professor ofthe History of Christianity at the DivinitySchool and Professor of History and Directorof the Institute for the Study of AmericanEvangelicals at Wheaton College. Her mostrecent book is Her Heart Can See: The Lifeand Hymns of Fanny J. Crosby. Among hercurrent projects are two books, Evangelicalism:A Very Short Introduction for Oxford Univer-sity Press and A Short History of Pentecostalismfor Cambridge University Press.

Frank Burch Brown, the Alexander Camp-bell Visiting Professor of Religion and theArts, will offer a three-course sequence, onecourse per year over the next three years, onreligion and aesthetics. The Frederick Doyle Kershner Professor of Religion and the Artsat Christian Theological Seminary (Indiana-polis), Brown works extensively in the fieldof religious and theological aesthetics, withadditional interests in literary theory and inthe discernment of emotion and meaning(communal and personal) in the musical andvisual arts. His wide-rang-ing books are Transfigura-tion: Poetic Metaphor andReligious Belief; The Evolu-tion of Darwin’s ReligiousViews; Religious Aesthetics;and the award-winningGood Taste, Bad Taste, andChristian Taste: Aesthetics in Religious Life. Acomposer with twenty commissioned worksto his credit, he recently fulfilled a commissionfrom the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir.

Peter Casarella will be Visiting Professor ofTheology. His areas of specialization include

theological anthropology, eschatology, medievaltheology (including St. Bonaventure andNicholas of Cusa), the thought of Hans Ursvon Balthasar, and Hispanic/Latino theology.He has edited or coedited: Christian Spiritu-ality and the Culture of Modernity: The Thoughtof Louis Dupré (Eerdmans, 1998), Cuerpo de Cristo: The Hispanic Presence in the U.S.Catholic Church (Crossroad, 1998), andCusanus: The Legacy of Learned Ignorance(Catholic University Press, 2007) and pub-lished research articles in various journals.His current research projects include a bookwith the working title “Von Balthasar: TheCentrifugal Politics of Culture.” After servingfor fourteen years in the School of Theologyand Religious Studies at The Catholic Univer-sity of America, he is currently full Professorof Catholic Studies at DePaul University.

New Associate Faculty

Philip V. Bohlman is the Mary WerkmanDistinguished Service Professor of the Human-ities and of Music, and of Jewish Studies. Anethnomusicologist, music and religion formhis central subjects, ranging from Jewishmusic in the modern era to theinterpretation of music in wor-ship in North American reli-gious communities to currentethnographic study of musicin the Muslim communities ofEurope. His writings addressissues in the intersections of music with race,nationalism, and colonial encounter; theontological and ethical dimensions of music;and social agency of aesthetics and perfor-mance. He is also Artistic Director of theJewish cabaret ensemble, the New BudapestOrpheum Society, an ensemble-in-residenceat the University of Chicago.

Christopher Faraone is the Frank CurtisSpringer and Gertrude Melcher SpringerProfessor in the Humanities at the Universityof Chicago. A member and former chair ofthe Department of Classics, he teaches andwrites primarily about Greek religion andpoetry, and regularly teaches in the core cur-riculum, where he serves as the director ofthe Greek Thought and Literature sequence.In recent years he has taught in the College’sOverseas Programs in Athens, Rome and Paris.He also teaches in the Departments of NewTestament and Early Christian Literature.

David Tracy Retires

Internationally renowned theologian and philosopher of religion David Tracy, AndrewThomas Greeley and Grace McNichols Greeley Distinguished Service Professor ofCatholic Studies and Professor of Theology and the Philosophy of Religion in the

Divinity School, retired from teaching at the end of Fall Quarter, 2006.

at John Carroll University from1976 to 1977, delivering theTuohy Lectures on “the Prob-lem of God.” The recipient ofseveral honorary doctoratedegrees, Prof. Tracy was electedto the American Academy ofArts and Sciences in 1982. Hehas lectured in approximatelyforty universities around theworld. In 1997 he won the Faculty Teaching Award at the University of Chicago, and in 2000 he delivered theprestigious Gifford Lectures under the title“This Side of God.”

Prof. Tracy taught a wide variety of coursesin contemporary theology and philosophy,including philosophical, systematic, andconstructive theology and hermeneutics,and courses dealing with issues and personsin religion and modern thought. His many

David Tracy was born in 1939 in Yonkers,New York. A noted Roman Catholic teacher,scholar, priest, and theologian, he receivedhis licentiate (1964) and doctorate (1969) atGregorian University in Rome. From 1967

to 1969, Prof. Tracy taught at Catholic Uni-versity of America, his first teaching assign-ment. He then moved to the University ofChicago, where he became the first Catholicpriest to be appointed to the Divinity School.In 1985 he was named Distinguished ServiceProfessor, and in 1987 he was named Distin-guished Service Professor of Roman CatholicStudies. He has served on the university’sCommittee on the Analysis of Ideas andMethods and on the Committee on SocialThought. He was a fellow, with John Cobb,

Ms. Tobey comes to Sightings after twoyears in the Manuscript Editing departmentat the University of Chicago Press. Shereceived a B.A. from DePaul University anda Master’s Degree from the Divinity School,where she is currently a Ph.D. student inAnthropology and Sociology of Religion.Her research focuses most specifically on the Plowshares, a contemporary Catholicmovement; and, morebroadly, on self-marginalizing religiousgroups in both histori-cal and contemporaryAmerica, and howthey create and main-tain outsider identitiesin the midst of shiftingsocial circumstances.

The 24th Annual Lecture at DePaul Univer-sity’s Center for Church-State Studies wasdelivered by Franklin I. Gamwell, the ShailerMathews Distinguished Service Professor ofReligious Ethics, the Philosophy of Religion,and Theology. His lecture, entitled “TheQuestion of Democracy,” was delivered onThursday, April 26, 2007, at 3:30 p.m. in theUnion League Club (downtown Chicago).

For more than twenty-four years, thenondenominational Center for Church-

State Studies at DePaul University hasforged a vital link between secular and religious communities in society. Theannual lecture, sponsored since 1983, servesthe Center’s mission to foster continuingdialogue among members of the legal, policy-making, and religious constituenciesof our society.

Martin E. Marty, the Fairfax M. ConeDistinguished Service Professor Emeritus,presented the lecture in 1995.

An evangelical woman who lived in Newport, Rhode Island, in the eighteenthcentury, Osborn kept an extraordinary

devotional diary, writing for more thanthirty years and producing a total of 15,000

manuscript pages. More than 1,500 of thesepages still survive.

Brekus teaches courses on every period ofAmerican religious history from the found-ing of the colonies to the present, but shealso has a particular interest in early Americaand the role of women in religious history.She is the author of the award-winningStrangers and Pilgrims: Female Preaching inAmerica, 1740–1845, which explores the riseof Protestant female preaching during theeighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

In her forthcoming book, Brekus examinesthe relationship between the evangelicalmovement and the Enlightenment by focus-ing on the story of Osborn, a schoolteacherwho gained a large following in Newport as a spiritual leader.

Of her goal for the book, which is on

contract with Knopf, she writes, “I hope towrite an accessible narrative that will give bothhistorians and educated readers a more sophis-ticated understanding of early evangelicalism,the history of women’s religious leadershipand the legacy of the Enlightenment.”

Brekus, who has already written severalchapters of Sarah Osborn’s World, plans touse her Guggenheim fellowship to completesome of her research on the book in Newport, Rhode Island, and to finish the manuscript.

The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation has named Catherine Brekus,Associate Professor of the History of Christianity in the Divinity School, a 2007

Guggenheim fellow. Professor Brekus, who was selected from among 2,800 U.S.

and Canadian applicants, will use her Guggenheim fellowship to complete her book, SarahOsborn’s World: Popular Christianity in Early America, which explores the rise of evangeli-calism during the eighteenth century through the personal life story of Sarah Osborn.

New Director of Field Education and Church Relations

Kevin Boyd joined the staff of the DivinitySchool as Director of Field Education andChurch Relations as of August 1, 2007. Mr.Boyd is an alumnus of Stetson University andof the Divinity School’s M.Div. program(2005). For the past several years he hasserved as Resident Chaplain at Rush Univer-sity Medical Center, where he was specificallyinterested in neurological disorders and howthe loss of memory function impacts thedeveloped sense of self. There he also con-tinued his interest in medical ethics (organtransplantationand the questionof identity) andthe interplaybetween religiousbeliefs and medi-cal technology bycompleting Rush’sGraduate Certifi-cation in HealthCare Ethics. He isendorsed through the Episcopal Church forhospital chaplaincy and is eligible for BoardCertification through the Association ofProfessional Chaplains.

Cynthia Lindner, Director of the M. Div.program, remarked that “Mr. Boyd brings a rich mixture of gifts to his work in ourministry program: he is grounded in Chicago’sintellectual heritage, he has been mentoredand supervised by excellent pastors andchaplains, and he has refined his own pastoralpractice in a context that demands diligentand authentic theological reflection on thepractice of ministry. I anticipate that withKevin’s energetic leadership, we will be ablenot only to solidify and strengthen the exist-ing field education curriculum, but to developa more thoroughgoing and coherent approachto students’ practical experience throughoutour program.”

At the Divinity School Mr. Boyd will beresponsible for supervising the placement ofsecond-year M.Div. students in churches, foroversight of the field work program, and forthe development of our working relationshipswith denominational adjudicatories andnational bodies.

Lilly Endowment Inc. has awarded the Divinity School at the University ofChicago $500,000 for the next three yearsto support a program that will bringtogether faculty, ministers, and the DivinitySchool’s Master of Divinity (M.Div.) andPh.D. students who are preparing to teachin theological education to address theunexamined, but widely-held assumptionthat preparation for ministry and prepara-tion for theological education reflect quitedifferent aims and purposes. The monieswill support a coordinated program of conferences, symposia, seminars, teachingopportunities, and a range of engagementswith churches and their leadership.

W. Clark Gilpin, the Margaret E. BurtonDistinguished Service Professor of the History

of Christianity andTheology in theDivinity School,stressed the impor-tance of the Endow-ment award: “Thefocused intensityof graduate studypresents few ‘readymade’ opportunitiesto step back and

ask ‘why is this profession important to me, and how do I understand its governingpurposes?’”

The programs supported by this grant,observed Cynthia Gano Lindner, Director of Ministry Studies and Clinical Faculty forPreaching and Pastoral Care in the DivinitySchool, “will make intentional and visiblewhat many of us already enjoy, and value mosthighly about the community of discourse atthe Divinity School. At Chicago, M.Div.and Ph.D. students alike benefit from aneducational context in which it is possible to have extended conversations about ourcommitments and our work with professorsand with pastors, with persons who aspire to careers in the academy and persons whoare preparing for leadership in religiouscommunities.”

The Endowment is an Indianapolis-based,private philanthropic foundation created in1937 to support the causes of religion, edu-cation and community development. TheEndowment has long had an interest in therole and purpose of religion in American lifeand strives to create opportunities across the country to learn more about the subjectthrough research, to encourage the develop-ment of a new generation of ministers, tonurture practicing ministers, and to buildhealthy and vibrant congregations.

from the Jewish Federation of MetropolitanChicago to support a series of four visitingprofessors, one per academic year, to enhanceits curriculum in the study of Judaism.

A second grant program will help ministrystudents engage in conversation and reflectionon public ministry well beyond the confinesof Swift Hall, the city of Chicago, and ourU.S. borders. Four “International MinistryStudies grants” will be issued to currentM.Div. students each year for the next four

years, thanks to matching monies from theCarpenter Foundation and the Baptist Theological Union. Acknowledging thatmost of the world’s Christians now live in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and recognizing our students’ commitment tothe global church, these grants will make it possible for selected students to travelabroad for a summer of learning and work-ing alongside religious leaders and faithcommunities in other cultures. When students return to the Divinity School, they will be responsible for offering a pre-sentation or seminar that will share theirinsights with the Swift Hall community.While students will be responsible for identifying and making arrangements withtheir international ministry partners, wewould be happy to hear from alumni or others with international sites and or per-sonnel for our consideration. The Divinity Students Association(DSA) is an organization run by andfor University of Chicago DivinitySchool students. The Ethics Club gives students of ethics andothers who are interested a chance to sharetheir ideas and their work, review the workof and ask questions of professors in morerelaxed and intimate settings than that of a formal class, and meet other students inter-ested in similar topics both for discussionand for socializing. In 2006–07, the EthicsClub hosted six noontime meetings. Discus-sions with faculty included Professor RichardShweder of the Department of ComparativeHuman Development and Professors FranklinI. Gamwell, Martha Nussbaum, Jean BethkeElshtain, and William Schweiker, all of theDivinity School. Topics of these discussionsranged from process theology to female circumcision to just-war theory and the war

discussion. Presenting at an Ethics Clubevent allows students to discuss their workin settings that can be more formal (a conference) or more informal and relaxed(noontime meetings). We also hope to continue to have a group of committed students who will help to plan and arrangeevents. Being part of a club allows studentsto meet others (students and faculty), gainexperience both with planning academicevents and with presenting work, andmaybe have a little fun along the way.

in Iraq. We also hosted a noontime meetingwith advanced Ph.D. students of ethics todiscuss the steps involved in working towarda Ph.D. and to hear some advice on making itthrough a long and sometimes tiring butrewarding process.

The club also enjoys convening for socialevents! One of our most successful eventshas been a quarterly Pub Night, which drawsstudents from diverse areas within the DivinitySchool to gather and talk about topics inethics—or religion—or sports—or currentevents—or just to tell jokes and catch upwith our friends. Pub Nights are open to allDivinity School students and faculty.

Future plans for the club include possibleconferences on medical ethics during the2007– 08 school year and on business ethicsin 2008 – 09; a workshop with students fromthe University of Notre Dame in Autumn2007; a dinner with faculty and students;and continued noontime discussions andevenings at the Pub. One way in which we would like to grow as an organization isto make more connections between students in the Masters and the early stages of thePh.D. program and more advanced Ph.D.students, so we encourage all our Ph.D.students to submit papers either for ourupcoming conferences or for a noontime

Divinity School Ethics Club

On a hot day in late May, the Divinity School Ethics Club met

for lunch in Swift Hall for a presentation on “The Future

of Religious Ethics” with Professor William Schweiker, the

club’s advisor. Professor Schweiker discussed trends in the field of

ethics and his thoughts on how the study of religious ethics can

remain relevant, rigorous and challenging in the academy. Students

asked questions and offered their own thoughts on this topic, which

was of great interest to those intending to study and teach religious

ethics within university, seminary and other academic settings.

Professor Schweiker’s scholarship and teach-ing engage theological and ethical questionsattentive to global dynamics, comparativereligious ethics, the history of ethics, andhermeneutical philosophy.

His recent books include Power, Valueand Conviction: Theological Ethics in thePostmodern Age (1998) and Theological Ethicsand Global Dynamics: In the Time of ManyWorlds (2004). He has published numerousarticles and award-winning essays, as well asedited and contributed tosix volumes, including,most recently, HumanityBefore God: ContemporaryFaces of Jewish, Christianand Islamic Ethics (2006).Professor Schweiker wasalso chief editor and con-tributor to A Companionto Religious Ethics (2004),a comprehensive andinnovative work in thefield of comparative reli-gious ethics. He is cur-rently an editor of TheJournal of Religion and is writing a book on “theological humanism.” ProfessorSchweiker is an ordained minister in theUnited Methodist Church.

The work of the MMC in terms of supporting faculty work and sponsoringconferences and publications will continueunder Professor Schweiker. His ownresearch concerns will find some expressionin the Center’s work as well. “I want to give special attention to the historical andcontemporary interactions—contentious,peaceful, concealed, and intentional—among religions,” said Schweiker. “I amengaged in exploring and also advancing

forms of religious humanismnow arising within various con-texts which aim to address thevarious global challenges peopleface. I intend to engage inresearch projects on these globaldynamics and interactions withan eye to the role—if any—the religions can play in forginga humane future.”

Professor Schweiker succeeds Wendy Doniger, theMircea Eliade DistinguishedService Professor of the Historyof Religions, as director of the

Center. Dean Rosengarten offered the following words of gratitude toProfessor Doniger for her three yearsof service at the Center’s helm: “I am tremendously grateful to WendyDoniger for three inspired years ofleadership of the Marty Center. AsDirector she shaped a distinctiveintellectual profile for the Center’swork, one that focused the questionof public religion as a comparativeproject and that also brought intoplay classic questions about the her-itage of the study of religion in rela-tion to the “Chicago School” of the historyof religions à la Joachim Wach and MirceaEliade. She was also a devoted architect of

the dissertation seminar that is a crucialpiece of the Center’s annual work.”

The vision of establishing a venue for theadvanced study of religions at the Universityof Chicago came from Joseph M. Kitagawa,dean of the Divinity School from 1970 to1980. Martin E. Marty, a historian of mod-ern Christianity, worked closely with DeanKitagawa to formulate the purposes andoperation of the center within the context of the Divinity School’s general mission of teaching and graduate research. The Institute for the Advanced Study of Religionofficially opened in October 1979, with Professor Marty as its director. Subsequentdirectors have been Bernard McGinn (1983–

1992), a historian ofmedieval Christianity;Frank Reynolds (1992–2000), a historian of religions who special-izes in Buddhist studies; and W. Clark Gilpin(2001–2004). In 1998,the Institute for theAdvanced Study of Religion was renamedthe Martin Marty Center, to honor itsfounding director

for his singular distinction as historian,author, and commentator on religion and public life. ❑

This May, Richard A. Rosengarten, Dean of the Divinity

School, announced the appointment of William Schweiker,

Edward L. Ryerson Distinguished Service Professor of Theo-

logical Ethics, to the directorship of the Martin Marty Center, the

Divinity School’s institute for the advanced study of religion.

Marty Center Conferences

In May of 2008 the University ofChicago will hold a conference celebrat-ing the theological scholarship of David

Tracy and discussing central issues in hiscurrent research. In consultation with Prof.Tracy, the Divinity School has organized theconference to explore the significance ofAugustine of Hippo for interpreting ourcontemporary theological, philosophical,and cultural circumstances. Prof. Tracy isscheduled to present one of the papers himself, at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 4.

The conference structure will be chrono-logical, with sessions proceeding from late

antiquity through the medieval and earlymodern periods to the present. But, through-out, it aims to establish a series of conversa-tions between the Augustinian tradition,broadly conceived, and contemporaryscholarship in theology, philosophy, and

cultural history.

This conference will address connec-tions among religion, mourning, andpsychoanalysis, taking each term as

both framework and object of analysis. Thefocus of the conference involves the paradoxof mourning: the mourning (and melancholy)that follow death and other forms of loss and

change entails a psychic labor with a creativedimension. New forms of memory, identity,morality and solidarity can be produced onthe individual level; and new cultural prod-ucts, such as the theoretical inventiveness ofpsychoanalysis and religious studies them-selves, may emerge on the cultural level.

Religion will be considered as a mediatorof mourning in papers that speak to its rolein the transformation of meaning wroughtby the mourning of death and loss. Religionwill also be considered as a lost object itself,as a set of symbolic structures whose efficacyhas been lost to those who take their bear-ings from a secular worldview. Following thework of Peter Homans, Professor Emeritusof Psychology and of Religious Studies inthe Divinity School, who has traced the origins of psychoanalysis to Freud’s loss of traditional religious involvement, thesepapers undercut the usual dichotomies ofsecular/religious and mourning/melancholy,demonstrating an internal and ongoing relationship to a reworked conception ofreligion embedded within such presumedlysecular disciplines as psychoanalysis and the academic study of religion.

An Interview with William Schweiker

CIRCA: What does it mean to you to havebeen appointed the new director of theMarty Center, and what are your plans forthe Center?

WS: It is a genuine honor for me to beappointed the Director of the Marty Center.I am excited about continuing the work of many years and so many scholars. Myconnection to the Center is longstanding.When a student, I was selected as a JuniorFellow in the Institute for the AdvancedStudy of Religion, as it was then called,directed by Bernard McGinn. Since joiningthe faculty, I have helped to run the Seminarwith previous directors Frank Reynolds,Clark Gilpin, and Wendy Doniger. Further,I have been fortunate enough to help orga-nize several conferences co-sponsored by the Marty Center. I have also done somewriting for Sightings and also the Web Forum.So, in various ways, I have come to under-stand and deeply appreciate the intellectualvitality of the Center.

The Marty Center must remain at theforefront of scholarship on religion and tocontinue to build on its renown. Meetingthose aspirations is my first responsibility, as I see it. I intend to do so by supportingfaculty research, fostering new projects, andcontinuing the work of the Fellows Seminarand our various publications. I also hope to make contact with other research centersaround the university, the nation, and alsoglobally. Happily, we have two importantconferences already in the works for thiscoming year, one around Martin Marty’sbirthday and also the conference in honor of David Tracy. We will work to make thesemajor events for the Center and the DivinitySchool. Other events are also afoot.

The Center has been always been concerned with the public meaning of the religions. In fact, attention to the social reality of religion is a longstanding focus of work at the Divinity School, one thatreaches back to our earliest years. Further-more, everyone working in religious studiesnowadays is mindful of the importance, andalso sometimes the peril, of good critical,historical, and constructive work on the religions. If one looks globally, there aremanifold challenges—authoritarian andotherwise—to the rigorous analysis andinterpretation of the religions. Freedom ofinquiry is more important today than atanytime in the recent past, and that is true, I believe, even for the religions themselves.The Marty Center has been a bulwark forthe spirit of inquiry and it must continuethat tradition of research.

Given the shared ethos among everyoneinvolved with the place, it is also the casethat each of the directors has left her or hisdistinctive mark on the work of the Center.

In my own case, three interlocking concernsshape my current work which I intend toexplore in collaboration with faculty hereand other scholars, both in meetings andconferences.

One interest of mine is the current up-surge of new forms of “humanism.” We areliving in an age of manifold types of endanger-ment to life through the extension of humanpower in its various forms, ranging fromgenetics to the environment. This opensquestions about the relation of religion andscience, but also historical, comparative, andconstructive work on what the religions meanby “life” and its forms, its moral status, andalso the scope of human responsibility. I thinkthis could be a rich topic to explore fromvarious perspectives. My hope, then, is tofoster interest in research around these threebroad areas of concern.

CIRCA: This year you will be inauguratingsome new events and projects at the MartyCenter. Could you tell us a little about thegenesis of these new items, and where youhope to see them at the end of your three-year term?

WS: I have already noted that I want to helpto foster and sponsor work on three areas of interest, realizing that the precise shape of

those projects will be defined by the partici-pants. Beyond those initiatives there are twomajor things I am planning to begin at theCenter. For many years the Center has hostedsenior scholars from a variety of fields. Thesescholars participate in the Fellows Seminarand at times have taught courses and seminars.This coming year we will begin the SeniorFellows’ Symposium. A Senior Fellow, begin-ning this coming Spring with Professor MaryGerhardt, will give a public presentationand discussion of work. This will allow theCenter to showcase our Senior Fellows andalso, I hope, to attract more applications forresearch time at the Center. Conjointly, Iwant to use these occasions to involve otherresearch centers around the university andthe city and thereby to further the visibilityof the Center.

The other initiative I would like to see is to facilitate work in-house in the DivinitySchool among faculty in a particular area(say, Theology or History of Judaism) thatwill increase the vitality of work and also the general conversation in Swift Hall. TheMarty Center has always been a place forthis faculty to meet and to discuss topics ofshared interest. I am hoping in various waysto build on that past. The precise form thesemeetings will take will obviously be deter-mined by the participants, but I am alreadyhaving conversations with various folks abouthow to facilitate those discussions.

In the course of the next three years I hopethese initiatives will become permanent features of the work of the Center.

CIRCA: Tell us something about your current(non-MMC) projects, and your goals forfuture research?

WS: I intend to do more work on the themeof theological and religious humanism in avariety of ways. My next big project, which I am now beginning, builds on my previouswriting and will tackle the whole theme of“ethics and the integrity of life.” This willinvolve historical work—in (say) terms ofhow ideas of “life” are used in Christianthought but also the legacy of Lebensphilo-sophie and also current ethics—but alsodebates at the interface of ethics, religion,and the life sciences. My intention is thatthis research will find expression in a systematic work in theological ethics.

Beyond those projects, I also try to beresponsive to various requests to speak andto write on a host of topics. Who knowswhat the future holds in that respect? Thatfor me is just part of the adventure of think-ing. And I am delighted that I can continuethe adventure in a new way through mywork with the Marty Center. ❑

Last winter, as the Alma Wilson TeachingFellow, I taught a course on sixteenth-century Anabaptism and Spiritualism andthe representations of these “Radical” move-ments in historical and fictional narratives. I knew it would be a great quarter when, onthe first day, several of my eighteen studentsquestioned the title of my course: “TheRadical Reformation of the Sixteenth Century.” For what exactly did I mean by“radical”? Indeed, as more than one studentpointed out, “radical” could mean many different things. I was more than happy tobegin my answer by explaining that whileMartin Luther was clearly the most theolog-ically radical of the Reformers who broke withthe Roman Church, given his claim that weare saved by grace through faith and are there-fore simul iustus et peccator in this life, Lutherwas also a social conservative who condemnedthe peasant uprisings in the Empire between1524 and 1525 and relied on the Germanprinces for support against Rome.

By highlighting Luther’s social conser-vatism, I was then able to introduce thesocially “Radical” reformers and sects thatwe were to study within the historical context of the mid-1520s and beyond. As James Stayer points out in The GermanPeasants’ War and Anabaptist Community of Goods (required reading in the course),many who participated in the Peasant’s Warfelt that Luther and Zwingli had not fullybased their reforms on the model of theApostolic Church, especially with respect to the idea that one must choose to followthe example of Christ and reshape the socialorder along New Testament lines. This viewgained currency among a group of Swissreformers led by the humanist ConradGrebel who began to re-baptize each otherin January of 1525 in order to separate them-selves from the false Christians in Zurich(hence the pejorative term “Anabaptist,”

A Report from the Wilson Teaching Fellow

Each year, the Alma Wilson Teaching Fellowship, made possible

by a generous endowment gift, provides one advanced graduate

student in the Divinity School an opportunity for supervised

teaching experience in the University of Chicago’s undergraduate college.

history and fiction. To that end, I asked for a book review of the recent popular spythriller Q written by a group of four Italianactivists now known as Wu Ming (at the timethey used the pseudonym “Luther Blissett”).This novel tells the story of an Anabaptistwho began as a disciple of Thomas Müntzerand narrowly escaped death during the Peasants’ War, unlike “Magister Thomas,”who was quickly executed after his capture.Our hero would go on to survive the siegeof Münster in 1535, form a new life among a group of spiritualizing Anabaptists in theNetherlands, become rich by cheating therichest banking family of Europe throughcredit fraud, and finally help finance the dis-semination of the subversive Benefit of Christin Venice in the late 1540s. Throughout thenovel he plays a game of cat and mouse witha heretic hunter and spy named Q who worksfor none other than the zealous Catholiccounter-reformer Gian Pietro Carafa, laterPope Paul IV (r. 1555 – 1559). My studentsrose to the occasion in their reviews, remind-ing me that every work of history or historicalfiction tells readers as much or more aboutthe time period of the author(s) than theactual events depicted in the narrative. Forexample, some of my students argued thatour Anabaptist’s progressive movement fromovert revolutionary violence to subversiveeconomic and propagandistic measuresagainst the Imperial and Papal status quoreflects the Italian authors’ view that oftenthe most effective way to produce change in society is by quietly undermining thefoundation of power, not confronting ithead-on. Our readings of Gottfried Keller’snovella Ursula and Friedrich Engels’s TheGerman Peasants War in the last few weeksof the course likewise demonstrated that theRadical reformers of the sixteenth centurycould be useful for later generations of socialradicals or conservatives looking for charlatans,heretics, or heroes.

Finally, I assigned a research paper onsome aspect of the Radical Reformation,due at the end of the course. Given that the course was cross-listed in History andReligious Studies, I gave the students con-siderable freedom to pursue their own inter-ests, and they did not disappoint. I learnedwhy there was no lasting Radical Reformationin Sweden (there was one printing press,controlled by the pro-Lutheran Crown),why the Schleitheim Confession of 1527 isreminiscent of the Rule of St. Benedict andits focus on obedience (its author, MichaelSattler, had been Prior of St. Peter’s monasteryin the Black Forest), and how contemporaryUnitarians have appropriated the sixteenth-century Socinians into their own historicalmemory. These are but a few examples ofthe fine work produced by my students, andI thoroughly enjoyed reading their bookreviews and final papers. In fact, most of thecredit for this course goes to them, for thehigh quality of their written work, groundedin our lively discussions of the primary andsecondary readings in class, would havebeen impossible without their dedicationand hard work throughout the quarter. ❑

A few Radicals evencontended that armed revolutionary actionwas necessary to free the common peoplefrom their bondage to the secular and eccle-siastical “fat cats” and usher in the Kingdomof God. None other than Thomas Müntzer,perhaps the most well known Radicalreformer of the sixteenth century, heraldedthis position. Finally, some Radicals, troubledby the increasing proliferation of Anabaptistsects in the 1520s and 1530s, contended thatthe true Church of God was internal andspiritual. They therefore abandoned relianceon external ceremonies or rites to somedegree or another and claimed adherence tothe true Church of the Spirit. Such was theview of the “Spiritualist” Sebastian Franck,who argued that the true visible Church hadfallen after the death of the apostles.

One of the most interesting aspects of the course was our look at various represen-tations of the Radical Reformation in

This year’s Marty Center disserta-tion seminar is being offered intwo sections, one led by WilliamSchweiker, director of the Center;

the other led by Wendy Doniger, past director.Both the Senior Research Fellows and

Junior Dissertation Fellows, listed below, willparticipate in the seminar, which is designedto advance interdisciplinary research in allareas of religious studies. Junior Fellows willbe required to present their individual pro-jects not only within the seminar, beforetheir peers, but before public interlocutorsat a special spring meeting. The seminar’sgoal is, thus, to help participants articulatetheir projects in ways that will be intelligible

to specialists and non-specialists alike.

This year the MMCis instituting a newevent, the Senior Fellow Symposium.This event will allow a Senior Fellow to present her or his workin a public forum to

members of the seminar, the entire DivinitySchool community and also members of theUniversity and interested persons. ProfessorMary Gerhart will be speaking at the firstSenior Fellow Symposium to be held thisyear, with a reception to follow. The datewill be announced on our website.

Our Marty Center Senior Research Fellowfor 2007–2008 is Mary Gerhart. ProfessorGerhart will be working on a book with theworking title The Divine Conjectures: Towarda Loving Universe, based on what is knownof the workings of conjecture and hypothesisin science and religion.

Mary Gerhart (Ph.D. 1973) is ProfessorEmerita of Religious Studies at Hobart and

William Smith Colleges inGeneva, New York. Sheserved as Editorial Chair ofReligious Studies Review and as visiting professor at theUniversity of Houston and of Notre Dame.

Her academic work haslong emphasized an inter-disciplinary approach. Herbooks include The Question

of ‘Belief ’ in Literary Criticism: An Introduc-tion to the Hermeneutical Theory of PaulRicoeur (1979, based on her dissertation)and Genre Choices, Gender Questions (1992).With Anthony Yu, she published Morpholo-gies of Faith: Essays in Religion and Culturein Honor of Nathan A. Scott, Jr. (1990). The Christianity Reader, an 864-page anthol-ogy of primary texts from 200 BCE to thepresent—which she edited with FabianUdoh—appeared in July 2007.
