In other J.S.C. news we had another meeting

this week to discuss the 10 minute eating area

at the beginning of recess. After listening to

many ideas from the students, we have

decided as a group that students will be

required to sit and eat for at least 5 minutes

before they are allowed to leave the

area. Students are more than welcome to sit

and eat in the supervised area for 15 minutes,

but the minimum time will be 5 minutes. No

food is still allowed to leave the area.

Fees

Thanks to all the families who have paid their

2018 fees. We would appreciate payment as

SSV Trials

Over the past couple of

weeks some of our Grade

sporting trials to enter the

State Team. The following

students from our school have made it through

them well at the next stage of selections.

NAPLAN

On Tuesday 15th, Wednesday 16th and

Thursday 17th May students in grades 3 & 5 will

complete NAPLAN (National Assessment

Program—Literacy and Numeracy). NAPLAN

tests students in grades 3 & 5 on Reading,

Writing, Language Conventions (spelling,

grammar and punctuation) and Mathematics.

Tests are of 45 minutes duration and are held in

the morning sessions.

The results of these tests provide information for

students, parents, teachers and principals

which can be used to improve student

achievement.

The best way you can help your child prepare

for NAPLAN is to reassure your child that

Irymple South Primary School Newsletter - Issue 12, Week 3, Term 2, 2018

NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school

program, and to urge them to simply do the

best they can on the day.

Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by

their parent or carer. This is a matter for

consideration by parents in consultation with

the principal and teacher. If you decide to

withdraw your child you must sign a Student

Withdrawal form.

Later in the year you will receive your child’s

personal NAPLAN report. The report will

describe your child’s particular skills in Reading,

Writing, Language Conventions (spelling,

grammar and punctuation) and Mathematics.

The report will also show how your child

performed in relation to national minimum

standards.

Camps Sports & Excursions Fund (CSEF) 2018

The Victorian Government will be providing a

CSEF payment to all eligible families to assist

with the costs of school trips, camps and

sporting activities. Please contact the office to

get an application form. The School will need

to sight and copy the concession card to

ensure that the parent’s name and Centrelink

Reference Number (CRN) matches the

Centrelink database. The closing date to apply

for CSEF is Friday 29th June.

Eisteddfod

On Wednesday 13th June a group of grade 6

girls will be performing an item from ‘High

School Musical’ titled Get Your Head in the

Game at the Mildura Eisteddfod. Mrs Libby

Kennedy has choreographed a routine for

them and they are rehearsing during lunchtime

on Tuesdays.

Gardening

We have been very busy in the garden this

week. The Prep and Grade 1 students have

replanted their garden beds with vegies. The

Grade 3 students have propagated strawberry

plants into pots. These will be available for sale

at our next Farmer’s Market. The Grade 4

students have prepared and planted the vegie

gardens. We look forward to an abundant

supply of vegies!

In Grade 2, we have been learning about Multiplication.

We have explored different ways to solve multiplication by drawing groups, skip

counting, repeated addition and arrays.

SEED BOMB PROJECT The project will revolve around revegetation using native species. The students will get involved in hands-on activities to make "seed bombs", consisting of native seed encapsulated in clay balls. A lesson will be delivered to explain the importance of tree ecosystems and the advantage of planting native trees from seed rather than using seedlings. The "seed bombs" will then be released in an area previously used as Landfill, next to the Mildura Eco Village, on Sunday, June 3rd as part of an event open to public. The students will understand how to create seed bombs that have the potential of germinating into a native forest. The seeds are all sourced locally in the Mallee and are selected among different species such as acacias, saltbush and eucalyptus. Each species will provide a set of benefits that will overall aid the success rate of the project. The clay is used as a medium for the seeds to be easily stored, carried and protected by external factors (birds, wind, heat, etc.) The compost provides the initial essential nourishment which aids seed germination.

ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS The Environmental Team has been very busy around the school

this term. They have participated in a number of activities that

have utilised expertise from our local community. A new chook

pen has been constructed to house the chicks that we are

hoping hatch soon!

Seed Bombs

Giovanni showed the Environmental team how

to make a ‘seed bomb’. The students then

made their own ‘seed bombs’ that will be used

to help revegetate an area of land next to the

Mildura Eco Village.

Which bin do I place this in? Sharna Ross explained and demonstrated to the students which bin they should place

their rubbish. We have a three bun system at school; recyclable items, food scraps and

rubbish. With the hatching of our new chicks we will soon need lots of food for them to

eat! Penni went to each of the classrooms and helped the Environmental members to

explain this to their class.

Fruit Fly Deidre Jaensch talked to the students about the

need to look after our fruit trees to stop the

breeding of fruit flies. We have eliminated a

number of our fruit trees to discourage the fruit

flies from breeding and covered the remaining

trees.

CROSS COUNTRY

With Mrs Branson

At Monday morning’s assembly the

Marching Shield, Cross Country Shield,

Year Level Cross Country champions and

School Cross Country Champions were

presented with their awards.

The House Captains thanked all the

competitors, parents and supporters and

teachers for their input to the great

success of the day. The House Captains

also presented four students in their house with sportsmanship and

participation award.

ART

With Mrs Lord

ANZAC Day

Each year, as part of our ANZAC Day service, the students

contribute to the making of a wreath. This year each class made a

poppy that was used to create a whole school wreath. During Art

classes the students placed a fingerprint onto the petals of their

class poppy. The Junior School Council Representatives for each

class added the poppy to the wreath as part of the ceremony. The

school wreath can be seen in the Art Room. By creating a part of

the wreath the students presented their art to an audience which

enhanced the meaning of ANZAC Day to them.

Mother’s Day

All students are busily decorating a paper bag for Mum. The decorated bag will hold the gift

that they will purchase at the Mother’s Day stall on Friday May 11th. The following techniques are

being used to create some

wonderful bags; printing, collage,

macramé, drawing and painting.

The students love using their art

making skills to make something

special for someone that they love.

Information about year 6 to 7 transition for Government schools

April 2018

Year 6-7 transition is an important time for families and students.

Local government schools have a transition process that aims to help families and

students move from primary to secondary education in an informed and organised way.

During week 4 of this term, all government secondary schools will open their doors for

two hours in the evening, to allow families to see the school facilities, talk with students

and teachers and receive information about the opportunities for students at these

schools. (See the information below.)

Later in term two, all students will be able to attend a government secondary school on

a 2 ½ hour ‘Discovery Excursion’ to experience first-hand a secondary school in

action. The students will attend classroom lessons and recess, along with being bussed

to their secondary school and back to their respective primary school on the day.

At the end of term 2, all families of year 6 students will be asked to complete a

preference form indicating their preference for which government school they would

like their child to attend in 2019.

All of the relevant forms and information about the excursions and selections for 2019,

will be distributed through your government primary schools.

If you have any questions or concerns about the Open Nights, please contact the

secondary schools directly. Parents requesting Individual tours of the secondary schools

should contact the individual secondary school to make mutually convenient

arrangements. All other queries should go through your respective primary school at this

stage of the transition process.
