New Kids on the BlockBrian L. Phelps, CEO

In many ways, the new residents of Houston Cottage look like the children who have lived at Sipe’s in the past. But while their backgrounds or outward appearance might be similar, we definitely have a

different kind of young person here now.

The biggest difference is that these young adults are coming to live at Sipe’s because they want to. DSS is not placing them here; they are choosing Sipe’s for themselves as a place where they can make some positive changes. And they are coming in with plans about how they want to move forward with their lives.

One new resident is at CVCC, enrolled in the horticulture program; one is completing a GED in order to join the Army; one is finishing high school; one is a good cook. It is a small, varied, and busy group. You might find them doing computer work, studying the North Carolina driver’s handbook, looking for a job, or cooking. If they’re not at school, they might be out practicing their driving, volunteering, interviewing, or grocery shopping.

It’s exciting to see these young folks focused on what they can do for themselves. They’re not waiting for us to do it for them, nor are they wallowing in the traumas of their past. They are moving forward, and it is refreshing to talk with them about their aspirations and how we can help them.

We help families grow their dreams

Thanks Again, DeweyHouston Cottage history, in a nutshell:

1993 -- The Hickory Daily Record publishes an article about Sipe’s (the ‘boys home’) wanting to serve girls.

1994 -- Dewey Houston, having read that article, gives Sipe’s the money to build and furnish the Hazel T. Houston Cottage for girls in memory of his wife.

June, 1995 -- The first girls move into Houston Cottage.

1995-2008 – Houston Cottage provides a caring home for 87 girls from abusive, impoverished, unsafe, or unstable homes.

January, 2008 -- Having struggled with ever-increasing licensing requirements, dwindling revenues, and changing referrals, Houston Cottage closes.

New Kids continued on page 2

Thankfully, the Houston Cottage history does not end there.

Ongoing talks with social service experts in the county have determined that more and more older youth are living on the streets without acceptable options or opportunities. An idea for a new service in Houston Cottage takes shape.

January-December, 2008 Staff researches programs across the country which serve homeless young adults.

January, 2009 -- Houston receives renewed DSS licensing for residential childcare.

June-October, 2009 -- Sipe’s and volunteers hold events to raise money for a new transitional living program.

January-March, 2010 -- Staff and volunteers paint, clean, and otherwise ready Houston for residents.

March, 2010 -- Teacher/Counselors for the Houston Transitional Living Program are hired.

April, 2010 -- The new staff is trained, procedures are written, details are refined, and the word is spread about the new program at Sipe’s.

May, 2010 -- The first Transitional Living Program resident moves into Houston.

Over fifteen years ago, Dewey Houston enabled Sipe’s to create a place for children to live safely and grow into their dreams. His gift is still providing a caring place for children who need help.

Yes, they are checking out the staff and program and testing the limits. And while we are maintaining our program expectations, we are discovering how to treat them like young adults and not like children.

For forty something years now I have worked in residential programs which focused on children’s history, repairing damage, and fostering healing. In contrast, our Houston program focuses on the future, on growth and learning, and on how one’s choices and actions shape that future.

The Houston staff is helpful and competent, but they do not do or choose for the residents so much as coach them with advice and insights. The residents have

freedom, flexibility, and choice, as well as the corresponding responsibilities and consequences. The staff is awake around the clock, both to insure that the house is safe and orderly and to be available at all hours to listen and process whatever is going on in a young person’s life. Life proceeds, day or night, and the staff is there to ensure peace of mind.

The Houston program might be the last chance a desperate young person has to turn his or her life around. We want to empower them to do just that. Today, Houston is a place where growing, maturing youth can find the confidence, the resources, and the stability they need in order to achieve their goals.

Antsy McClain to Perform at Sipe’sOn Saturday, September 4, 2010, Sipe’s will hold its first Bloomin’ Orchard Festival to raise money for the new Transitional Living Program in Houston Cottage. The afternoon of activities, barbeque, and entertainment will be capped with a performance by Antsy McClain and The Trailer Park Troubadours at 5:30 p.m.

Referred to by country music legend Willie Nelson as a cross between Jimmy Buffet and The Andy Griffith Show, Antsy has many dedicated fans across the country. His music has been featured in movies, television, and international radio, including NPR’s All Things Considered, whose host, Debbie Elliot, called him “unique and intoxicating.”

We hope our friends and neighbors will come enjoy the food, games, entertainers, animals, and the easy-going atmosphere at Sipe’s. Die-hard Antsy McClain fans are already making plans to be here, some from a considerable distance.

Tickets will go on sale in July, and sponsorships (with numerous benefits) are still available. Check our website (www.sipesorchardhome.org) for further details, and plan to join us on September fourth.

An Orchid for the Orchard -- From Superintendent L. C. Pretty’s report at the Board of Directors meeting on October 9, 1945: “Mr. and Mrs. V. O. Sipe, on October 5, 1945, received the ‘Good Neighbor’ orchid from Tom Breneman on his program ‘Breakfast at Sardis,’ in a nationwide broadcast from Hollywood, California.”

Transitional Living Program OutcomesThe Federal government has identified seven outcomes of effective independent living programs. The state of North Carolina intends for every young adult coming out of foster care to achieve those seven outcomes by age 21.

Sipe’s has adopted those seven outcomes for the Houston program. This means that every activity, every program expectation, every personal goal, every discussion with the Houston residents should move them a bit closer to these ultimate outcomes:

1. Sufficient economic resources to meet their daily needs. 2. A safe and stable place to live. 3. Academic or vocational/educational credentials that are in keeping with the

youth’s abilities and interests. 4. Connections to the community through a personal network of responsible adults

who will remain supportive of the young adult over time. 5. Avoidance of illegal/high risk behaviors. 6. Postponement of parenthood until financially established and emotionally mature. 7. Access to physical and mental health services, as well as a means to pay for those

services.

Learning to drive, learning to cook, finding a job, washing clothes, saving money, setting goals, evaluating choices, making appointments, changing a tire—whatever the Houston residents experience while they are with us are opportunities for us to help them find their way to a successful future.

Training for the Houston Center staff included practicing Life Space Interviews and non-verbal communication using horses (pictured above), as well as blindfolded trust walks, Cognitive Behavioral Interventions, and all manner of safety and emergency procedures.

For twenty years, Glen Oaks Golf Club has hosted a golf tournament benefiting Sipe’s. This year’s event was as successful as the past nineteen, with a weekend full of games, entertainment, good food, and plenty of golf. Sipe’s is especially thankful to Alan and Karen Cloninger for continuing this tradition which was started by Karen’s parents, Bill and Gwen McRee. Over the years, this tournament has raised over $76,000 for Sipe’s.
