  • News from The Meadows Welcome to Winter in Maine! The weather has been

all over the place, 55° one day and –23° the next!

Please remember not all driveways are sanded as

much as ours so be careful everywhere you go! Eve-

ryone is getting ready for the big SuperBowl Sunday

Football event, making bets, getting information

how to record the game, and even where they are

going to watch the Patriots beat the Eagles! Hopeful-

    ly that is!

We started the new year slow and relaxed. We be-

gan our celebrations of the 7th, National Ice Cream

for Breakfast Day! We had homemade waffles with a

tricky Maine blueberry compote and Giffords vanilla

bean ice cream! BlueGrass had to cancel that Sun-

day, they must have had too much ice cream for

    breakfast.

To follow that exciting morning we had a packed

Tuesday, the 9th, Dr.Amy Wells came around 8am

and worked on peoples feets and toes. I had her

work on my foot for the first time! She was awe-

some! To practice good foot knowledge she told me

the following and go ahead and try while your read-

    ing this,

“ While sitting, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.

Now, while doing this, draw the number '6' in

the air with your right hand.

Did Your foot change direction? Don’t even bother

with the other foot, there is no hope for the left

one!” Then after Dr.Wells left we had a light exer-

cise program with Arlette. And Stephanie the hair

dresser came in also! It was a whole body healthy

    day!

A local Church has started coming on Fridays

again, they practice either in the library or the din-

ing room. Anyone is welcome to join them.

Our next celebration was on the 22nd for Ruth’s

Birthday! Ruth wanted a white cake with chocolate

frosting for her birthday dessert. Her son, Gary

brought the entertainment for the evening, a danc-

ing and singing teddy bear! The birthday bear reap-

peared later in the week, on the 25th for the double

trouble birthday of Elaine and Elizabeth! They en-

joyed their vanilla and chocolate ice cream cake, as

well as a blueberry coffee cake for breakfast celebra-

    tions.

We had the wild entertainment of Chris Hurd this

month. Hurd played elegant ballads of folk music.

One man band, he had fun, and it seemed the peo-

ple who came really enjoyed the different style of

    music.

Our crafting with the Leavitt Unified group got can-

celed this month due to snow days and mid-term

scheduling problems but next month we should be

    good to go!

    Dine Arounds

Our first Dine Around on the fourth, was snowed out . Our second dine around was to the newly renovated Lotus Buffet. Carl, Albert, Carol and Barbara enjoyed their smor-gasbord of Asian and American cuisine. Overall consensus was “really yummy”. I didn't

hear about anyone getting any sushi or enough wasabi, so it must have been missing from the buffet! Haha!

The famous Southern Krispy Kremes opened this month in Auburn, and we were lucky enough to try a batch! Dave Duley, Herb’s son, brought over a dozen on his way through! They were different and still donut-delicous but I think we can all agree, no donut com-

pares to mums homemade ones! Speaking of that, I think its about time for a double batch!

  • The Barnyard

While I was on vacation mum started spoiling the chickens, with giving them special treats of kale, biscuits

leftovers or cut up carrots! This resulted in tripled egg production, we were getting about 2 eggs every oth-

er day or so, now we are getting 7-10 eggs a day! Since I have returned home we have bought special

chicken kale, cabbage and cranberry blends for them and they love it! The ducks too! The ducks like trying

to fit into the water bucket to swim around, it doesn't usually work though! The goats are still loving their

hay and prancing around playing with Lucy or trying to find green trees or grass to munch on. On nice days

like this day, they enjoy just sun bathing.

Many of you have asked me what Lucy did when I returned home from my vacation. Well, she was mad at

me. She heard us pull in with Tyler’s truck, because who couldn't hear that, said hello, then immediately

went to what she was doing before we rudely interrupted her, sleeping on the couch. I played and antago-

nized her a little bit and showed her how much I missed her, but it wasn't until when I was petting Zoey

did she growl and try to get my attention as if to say, “Hey Im the one that missed you!” Once we went to

bed she couldn't get close enough to me sleeping under the covers under my arm with her head on my

neck, like she did when she was a pup. Now every time I leave her home because its too cold or whatever,

she greets me like I haven't seen her in years, when it has only been a couple hours.

    Groundhog Day

Ground hog day is a popular tradition celebrated in the United States and Canada on February 2. It derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog emerging from its burrow sees a shadow, it will retreat to its den and winter will persist for SIX more weeks, and if he does not, spring season will arrive early. The Groundhog Day ceremony held at Punxsutawney in central Pennsylva-nia has become the most attended in the US after the 1993 movie Groundhog’s Day. The earliest mention of Groundhog Day was on February 2, 1840 in Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Punxsutawney Phil the predicting groundhog, according to Wikepedia, is 75-90% accu-rate!

To celebrate Groundhog’s Day at The Meadows we will be taking bets, Shadow or no Shadow. The winning team doesn't have to shovel the next storm! HaHa, just kidding. Actually the winning team will earn an ice cream social! Sign Up sheet will be in the Dining Room!

Choose wisely, and may the odds ever be in your flavor!

    Flu And Sickness

We have done a great job

    not catching anything,

    (knock on wood), even with

all of the doctors offices that

are full of sickness that we

“need” to see. Make sure to

    keep washing and sanitizing

    your hands, OFTEN. If you

think you have a cold, we

like to keep people in their

rooms for a few days as to

not spread it. If the cold

    symptoms persists or wors-

en you need to consider a

    doctor or hospital visit for

    some antibiotics or further

    help getting better.

    Thank you for understand-

    ing and keeping well!
