According to Health Topics, a report released in February by the Pew Research Center and the CaliforniaHealthcare Foundation, eight in ten Internet users, or 59% of the U.S. population, search for healthinformation online. Searches for health information are the third most popular online activity, behindchecking email and using search engines. The report was based on telephone interviews conducted betweenAugust 9 and September 13, 2010.

Among possible health-related searches, the most frequent (by 66% of respondents) was for informationabout a specific disease or condition. Searches of this type have occupied the top spot since 2002, ahead of searches for information about specific medical treatments or procedures, information about physicians andother health professionals, and information about health care facilities.

The Health Topics report is part of the Pew Internet and American Life Project. The full text of the report canbe found online at http://www.pewinternet.org/Reports/2011/HealthTopics.aspx .

The NLM Technical Bulletin recently released a Skill Kit for searching for phrases inPubMed. The Skill Kit outlines the following steps:

    1. Search the phrase first without quotes or search tags.

    2. Check Search details to see how the search was translated.

    3. Use quotes only when Search details indicate your phrase is broken apart.

Most often, phrases entered without quotation marks will be searched as phrases in all fields, as well as beingsubjected to Automatic Term Mapping . However, sometimes even quotes wont work because not all phrasesare recognized as phrases.

The complete Skill Kit can be found here:

    http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/techbull/jf11/jf11_skill_kit_pm_phrase_searching.html .

News from the UT Health Science Center Libraries is published at the beginning of eachmonth to highlight the programs, services andresources offered by The Libraries.
