MSP events in 2018

Register now for the MSP for IslandsWorkshop - all speakers now confirmedDuring the DG MARE workshop on 11September, 12 speakers will be presentingtheir experience with MSP from an islandscontext. Speakers from all over Europe aretraveling to Gran Canaria to present anddiscuss experiences from Finland, France,Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Malta, Portugal,Scotland and Spain. International Forum for MSP -Conference Report publishedA conference report has been publishedfor the 1st International Forum for MSPthat took place on 24-25 May in Brussels.The report includes a summary of the twointeractive sessions that discussed the roleof stakeholders and cross-border andtransboundary integration in MSP. Survey launched on MSP and theResearch CommunityA session dedicated to links between MSPresearch and practice is planned for thenext meeting of the Member States ExpertGroup on MSP, to be held in October. Forthe purpose of this session, a short surveyhas been launched to capture currentresearch topics and organizations, amongother questions. Based on the surveyresults, five researchers from a variety ofcareer stages will be asked to present tothe MSEG as part of a 'science slam'session and also be given the chance totake part in a networking lunch. MSP ProjectsPHAROS4MPAs - Blue Economy andM a r i n e Conservation: SafeguardingMediterranean MPAs in order to achieveGood Environmental StatusThe general objective of the PHAROS4MPAsproject is to enhance managementeffectiveness and networking forMediterranean MPAs, in order to contribute tothe conservation of marine biodiversity andnatural ecosystems. This will be done bytaking into account the complex ensemble ofhuman activities developed within the BlueGrowth perspective and their interaction withprotected areas and marine ecosystems. New European Atlas of the SeasavailableThe updated Atlas of the Seas has 120 datalayers about topics including nature, tourism,security, energy, passenger transport, seabottom, sea level rise, fish consumption, etc.The maps can be easily embedded inpresentations. The Atlas will be madeavailable in all EU official languages soon andis now available in English, French, Germanand Spanish. Read more..

Launch of new MSP project in Romania TEAM4SEAS is a recently launchedparticipatory platform that aims to connects c i e n c e , stakeholders and policy forsuccessful MSP in Romania. It will run fromMay 2018 until April 2020 and will illustratehow a web-GIS system can be applied as asound basis for practically incorporating anecosystem approach within MSP initiatives. Interreg North Sea Region Call 8 -Expressions of interestThe aim of the programme is to supportdevelopment and foster sustained economicgrowth across the region. The North SeaRegion Programme helps enterprises,institutions, public administrations, NGOsand others to pool their expertise, sharetheir experience and cooperate to developrealistic solutions to problems shared byorganisations across the region. MARSPLAN BS Project - Eforie CaseStudy The case study focused on land-seainteractions and coastal erosion. Potentialconflicts were identified, such as betweenfishing and navigation, and marine protectedareas with economic uses. Ecosystem Services in the Baltic SeaThe project BalticApp (Wellbeing from theBaltic Sea - applications combining naturalsciences and economics) has published twostory maps; one on Recreation under ClimateChange , and the other: Ecosystem Servicesand Climate Change. Portuguese MSP GeoPortalThe SNIMar geoportal is a key tool for theenvironmental management of thePortuguese marine waters, contributing tothe implementation of the Marine StrategyFramework Directive (MSFD) and theMaritime Spatial Planning Directive (MSP),since it simplifies the sharing, searching andaccessing of metadata and marine data,particularly useful for public administration,universities and research institutes. North Sea Digital MSPSeveral countries around the North Sea areimproving their MSP information portals forstakeholders and other interested parties. Inaddition to the existing Dutch governmentatlas, the German government recentlyrelaunched their online atlas and ageodataset. These will soon be translatedinto English. Linking Marine Ecosystem Services tothe North Sea’s Energy Fields inTransnational MSPCOAST— The Centre for Environment andSustainability Research at the Carl vonOssietzky University of Oldenburg haspublished a scientific paper based on findingsof the NorthSEE project. The aim of the studyis to determine which interrelations betweenmarine ecosystem services and the marineenergy industry can be identified for use intransnational MSP in the North Sea region.Read more..

Launch of North Sea Energy AtlasThe Atlas provides an overview of the data oncurrent and future offshore energy in theNorth Sea region. This includes an inventoryof current energy flows from hydrocarbonproduction and wind energy, and how theseare transported to the onshore energysystem. Also potential future grids forhydrogen and CO2 are explored. The intendeduse of this North Sea Energy Atlas is toprovide users with quick insights regardingthe offshore energy system.
