Welcome to the latest edition of News from St. Paul’s.

So much has taken place over the past twelve months that this modest publication can provide but a snap-shot of life at the College during the year.

News from St. Paul’s is the means by which the College maintains its close ties with the alumni and the wider community.

Please enjoy!

SPRING DINNER 2011 The annual Spring Dinner took place in the newly renovated College Hall on 27th

February, 2011. It was well attended by 250 fellow alumni, teachers and friends. Once again latecomers were turned away. Anyone who is interested in this hot event should watch out for the 2012 one.

SPC CAREERS DAY 2011 The St. Paul’s College SPCAA Mentorship Scheme third event of the year was held on Saturday, 9th April 2011 in the balcony of the College Hall. The Second Annual Careers Day brings together the mentors, giving of their time and experience, to the senior students of the College.

More than 100 students and mentors turned up for the event, which gave students the opportunity to investigate a range of different options for their tertiary study and career choices.

Dr. Kennard, Principal, and Vincent Fung, President of the SPCAA, welcomed the F.6 Mentees and the new F.5 Mentees, and the old boy Mentors. Mr. Alton Lau, Director of Philip Securities (Hong Kong), offered the keynote address, highlighting the need for personal integrity, perseverance, and maximizing one’s talents through teamwork. Alton’s talk was well received by both mentors and mentees alike.

Then a sharing session occurred, chaired by Darren Lam, where last year’s graduates of Form 7 shared their experience of moving from secondary to tertiary study, and offered insights about their experiences. The College was happy to welcome back Derek Wong Man Fay (7C 2010; HKU Science), Jethro Pak (7B 2010; HKU Engineering) and Chase Ko (7A 2010, Savannah College of Art and Design, Hong Kong Campus).

Mentors and mentees then moved to Wong Ming Him Hall for the informal breakout session of the afternoon. The afternoon concluded with photo taking session.

Particular thanks go to our keynote speakers and panel discussion group, and to Darren Lam, Andy Law, Vincent Fung and SPCAA Administrator Miss Priscilla Fan for their organisational work in preparing for this successful day. In addition, the

Careers Team and the SPCAA Mentors would like to thank Old Boy teachers Mr. Bobby Poon Wai Hoi and Mr. Alvin Chow Yee Hang for their assistance in preparations for the big day, and to Ah Fu and the team of janitors for their usual sterling effort in set up of the College Hall and Wong Ming Him Hall.

The Mentorship Group will have their fourth and finaevent of the year: the High Table Dinner, to be held at Club Lusitano in Central on 2nd of July.

The College would like to recognise the tremendous amount of time and effort put in by the mentors in organizing the Mentors Inauguration Day, Christmas Drinks with the Mentors, Careers Day, and the High Table Dinner. Also, the College would like to recognise the Mentors and teaching staff who have been instrumental in the expanded ‘Lunchtime With the Mentors’ programme, which has proven so popular with the students. There were over 20 mentors who have assisted with the programme this year - a tribute to the ties that bind present and past students.

St. Paul’s College is indeed fortunate to have a graduate force that is willing to give back to the current student body and to share their acquired skills to make the path a little easier for the next generation of SPC graduates who will learn today, and lead tomorrow.

SPCAA IN ACTION-HELPING THE ‘LITTLE BROTHERS’ TO MAKE INFORMED CHOICES

‘Lunchtime with the Mentors’Mentorship Scheme 2010-2011

After the successful inaugural season of the ‘Lunchtime with the Mentors’ programme, a more ambitious programme was begun in this school year. The College was fortunate to have the two of the Chiu brothers, Philip and Alan, kick off proceedings in September and October with some good advice for our students about selection of courses for university, and alternative pathways.

At both of these mentorship lunches, a number of old boys came along to give specific advice about the US, UK, Australia, as well as other pathways here in Hong Kong. The student body of SPC is increasingly interested in overseas study-especially so in this period of changeover to the new 3-3-4 curriculum. It really benefits our students to have mentors giving first hand summaries of their experience of overseas study- both the advantages and the disadvantages of pursuing futher education in another environment.

In November, we were pleased to welcome KC Lai back to give our students the inside story of becoming a quantity surveyor. KC is one of the College’s longstanding mentors, and it was testament to the inspiring nature of the presentation of KC and five of his QS members that virtually all the students there re-adjusted their priorities to consider quantity surveying as a priority in the job market.

We were also pleased to have recent graduates Adrian Ng and Lawrence Wong return from Australia and the USA, respectively, to give an insight into the aviation industry. Both of these recent graduates (Adrian from University of New South Wales and a commercial pilot; Lawrence in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Tech and Gulfstream). As they are up to date with developments in the aviation industry, their input was especially valuable. And appreciated by the students.

In February, we were especially pleased to welcome Alton Lau from Philip Securities to talk about the financial investment and brokerage industry. Mr. Lau introduced the students to a range of concepts but the most important one was the concept of integrity and its place in advising clients. The students were so

impressed with Mr. Alton Lau’s message, that he has invited to reprise his talk for careers Day in April.

We were also very pleased to welcome back old boy Eddy Yung, General Manager from LSG SkyChefs, to talk about careers in the food services industry. As with many of the alumni, the interesting part for our students is following the path that led our mentor to their current position. Eddy’s talk was especially interesting in this way to our students. While the food services industry was not the first choice of our students prior to Eddy’s talk, many consider this as a positive option in their career plans as a result of his visit.

There are more ‘Lunchtime with the Mentor’ visits coming this term, and we are always on the lookout for Old Boys who would like to share their experience with our students over a casual lunch. If you are interested in participating in the programme, please let Bill Ryan, the SPC Careers Master know. We are always happy to have more speakers in the programme.

Miss Josephine Ho Kwai Ming

With the encouragement of our Principal, Dr. Kennard, the first wedding ceremony held at St. Paul’s College took place on 3rd October, 2010. The wedding ceremony took place in Wong Ming Him Hall, which was given a face-lift. Even the swimming pool became a lotus pond.

The groom, Hanson Lau, joined our primary school in 1984 and left in 1991 to continue his studies in Australia in 1991. He met his bride, Heidi, when attending a Masters course in Japanese Culture. With the help of our alumnus, Kenneth Ng (F.5, 1984), the ceremony was conducted in the Board Room on the second floor.

To accommodate over 100 guests, buffet tables were set up in different areas – Sushi bar on the landing of the first floor, main courses inside the rehearsal room on the first floor and the upper playground, dessert buffet and drinks in the swimming pool area, Chinese roasts in the table tennis area.

The host of the function is none other than the Secretary of St. Paul’s College Foundation, Miss Josephine Ho, the mother of the groom. Miss Ho taught Economics from 1973-91 and served as Teacher-Librarian from 1996-2007.

She has been upgraded to another level in 2011 - she is now grandmother when her daughter gave birth to a baby girl in April. Picture shows the newly added member of the family, Lydia V. Moresby.

Mr. Emerson

In August 2010, I was in Macau and met Cheong Chee Lup - They were both staying at the Hotel Royal for a few days.

A surprise mini-reunion.

In late January 2011, I had a very interesting lunch in Kowloon with Billy and Debi Fong. I taught Billy (Form 5 1965) way back then. They were in HK on a Chinese New Year break from teaching English in an automotive city in Hubei Province, where there are only about seven foreigners living. Both are retired, live in Los Gatos, California and are teaching in China for two years. Billy met Debi, who is from Missouri, USA, in Bible school in America and they have been married for 37 years.

In the 2009-2010 News from St. Paul’s, I wrote about my visit to America in October 2009, when I met with former students in New York for a fine Shanghai dinner, arranged by Dr. Andrew Cheng (3A 1971). This year, 2011, San Francisco on the other side of the country was the site of a wonderful evening with former students. This came about because of another wonderful evening, in Hong Kong in December 2010 when the Class of 1968 held a reunion dinner in Happy Valley at the Craigengower Cricket

15

Club organized by Sun Chung Wai (1968). At that dinner, I mentioned that I would be visiting San Francisco a few months later, and it was suggested that I contact Chris Lau, Sam Szeto King Sheung and Tenny Doone (all 68) about arranging a dinner when I visit California. The result was that the alumni gathered at the lovely University Club on Nob Hill, thanks to Tenny, a member. Not only were the alumni present, but former Head of English, Mrs. Masie Chan, and her son Chris, also an alumnus. The surprise guest of the evening was former Principal Timothy Ha Wing Ho, who was in San Francisco visiting family.

In addition to the three alumni mentioned above, others attending the dinner included Albert Man Ching Fong (65), Fu Chi Yung (67), Christopher Chan (95), Christopher Chen, and other Class of 68 alumni – Simon Au Young Fai, Stephen Kwan Ka Ling, Larry Lau Chung Yin, Ng Chun Pong and Stanley Wong Hak Wai. Not only did the dinner provide an opportunity for the alumni to meet with their former teachers, but also for some it was the first time they had met in a long time.

Before leaving HK for the States, I learned from Tenny that two of the teachers fondly remembered by the Class of 68 were Carol and Brian Millo, who had taught them mathematics. I then contacted the Millos in England and they very kindly sent me

some photographs and a report outlining their lives since leaving HK in 1968. These were circulated at the dinner and greatly enjoyed by the students. If anyone would like a copy of the Millos’ report, let me know – [email protected].

I mentioned above the Shanghai dinner in New York in 2009. New York was where I had lived for three years before coming to HK in 1964, and I still have many friends there. Though I didn’t have time this year to enjoy a dinner with alumni, I did go to Chinatown one day and enjoyed dim sum with Andrew Cheng. He is looking forward to visiting HK in December to join the anniversary banquet. This photo was taken in his clinic and we are holding a St. Paul’s mug from an earlier anniversary.

NEWS FROM ALUMNI

Chueng Man Sun told us that major events were held to celebrate the golden jubilee graduation anniversary of the Class of 1960. A number of fellow graduates from different parts of the world gathered in Hong Kong for this happy occasion. On 9th November 2010, 24 of them with 13 of their family members turned up for the reunion dinner held at the Craigengower Cricket Club. Two days later, a group of 30 turned up for a 4-day trip to Shaoguan and Zhongshan.

A priest in the Canadian Church who came to Trinidad and Tobago five years ago to arrange for the placement of Canadian theological students in an internship programme in this diocese has become the first bishop of Asian descent in the Anglican Church of Canada.

Hong Kong-born Canon Dr Patrick Yu, the incumbent of St. Timothy’s Anglican Church, Agincourt, Ontario, Canada, was elected suffragan bishop in the Diocese of Toronto on January 7.

The election took place at the St. James’ Cathedral in Toronto and Bishop-elect Yu will become the area bishop of York-Scarborough, east of Toronto.

His consecration has been scheduled for March 25. The diocese has a total of four areas overseen by four suffragan bishops and a diocesan bishop.

“It’s a significant event, but I also believe that it is important for everyone in the church, par-

ticularly its leaders, to be able to go outside of their own cultural enve-lope and stand beside a person of another culture,” Bishop-elect Yu said after the elec-tion. “I believe that having been an immigrant and an outsider may give me an advantage in doing that.”

A Christian from a Buddhist background, Bishop-elect Yu was ordained priest in 1982 and served his ministry in Canada.

He sees the “first and most important task of a bishop” as being “to support the work of parishes.” His priority, he said, would be to find ways to “max-imize” the time he spends with clergy and parish leaders; “first to listen, then offer support and encouragement.”

Bishop Colin Johnson, the diocesan bishop, said Canon Yu

will be a strong addition to the College.

One of the can-didates at that election was Barbados-born A r c h d e a c o n Peter Fenty who now works in the Diocese of Toronto.

While Canon Yu was elected

on the fourth ballot, Archdeacon Fenty received the second-highest of the total vote. Archdeacon Fenty moved that synod approve the election unanimously.

Canon Yu visited Trinidad and Tobago in February 2001 on a theological training mis-sion from Wycliffe Theological College of Ontario where he is a faculty member and co-ordi-nator of the college’s Internship Programme.

He was here to locate suit-able placements for students of the college who were to do a

three-month internship in this diocese as part of that pro-gramme. He put the initial arrangements and training in place for their stay.

Subsequently, in April 2001, Dianne Distler and Faun Harriman arrived to do their internship. Dianne went to St. Andrew’s, Tobago; and Faun to St. Paul’s, San Fernando. Marlaine Leggo came in May 2002 and did her internship at St. Andrew’s, Tobago. They have all been ordained priests in Canada since.

Since his election, Canon Yu, whose visit here just before Carnival 2001, told the Outlookthat he saw in this diocese “a dedicated church in the midst of a vibrant society.”

He said, too, he was struck with “the real struggle” of the church here with the shortage of clergy. He reports being “touched” by the hospitality he received during his stay.

Prior to coming here, Canon Yu visited Codrington College, Barbados.

Patrick Yu visited St. Paul’s and spoke at morning assembly in 2007. He is now an Anglican bishop in Canada. The attached article tells his story.

Another piece of news of Dr. Freddie Fu. In May 2010 he attended an International Sports Conference in Shanghai and met Liu Xiang, the 110 meter hurdle Olympic Gold Medalist. Freddie is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, USA. He also recently served as President of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.

Amy Tang (6A, 1989) shared a piece of good news with us. Now Mrs. Seto, she has been recognised as one of the 50 leading women in the state of Maryland by a local newspaper: http://mddailyrecord.com/leading-women/current-winners. Their house in Baltimore was also featured in Baltimore Sun.

“When architect Justin Hugh Szeto (6A, 1987) and his wife, Amy, decided to move from Anne Arundel County to Baltimore, they found the ideal spot in Mount Vernon just north of the Washington Monument — a 20-foot-by-20-foot garage. With its roof burned down and its doors long gone, the pathetic old structure had long been the neighborhood eyesore.” The complete article of their eco-friendly home can be viewed at: http://www.baltimoresun.com/features/home-garden/bs-re-dream-home-seto-20101114,0,906064.story

IMPRESSIONS OF FREDDIEMembers of the Class of 68 have made innumerable contributions to society, becoming teachers, doctors, and professionals in many fields, mostly unsung. However, one classmate in particular has become well known worldwide as an orthopaedic surgeon. That is Freddie Fu Ho Keung. After St. Paul’s, he attended a famous Ivy League school, Dartmouth College in the state of New Hampshire, USA. He then went on to study medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, eventually becoming Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pennsylvania, USA. Freddie and his wife, Hilda, (a St Stephen’s College and HKU alumna) attended the Class of 68’s reunion dinner on 29th December, 2010, both of them impressing everyone with their friendly, outgoing and bubbly personalities. Afterwards, a few classmates wrote some notes about Freddie, with tongues in cheeks. (Introduction by Mr. Emerson)

Heard of Julius Youngner? No? How about polio? Yes? Dr. Youngner co-developed the polio vaccine in the 1950’s, a monumental achievement in medicine and humanity.

In his company is Freddie Fu Ho-Keung, Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. Both are “Distinguished Service Professor”—the highest distinction bestowed upon only eight of its most distinguished faculty members in the history of the university. A pioneer and authority in Sports Medicine, Freddie is recognized as the pre-eminent leader in orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine across the globe.

If you do a Google search for Freddie Fu MD Pittsburgh there’s over a million results and still growing. You’ll even find a reference to a popular dish at a Pittsburgh restaurant named for him, “Dr. Fu’s Noodles”.

In this year alone, January 2011:“I just got searched again, the second time!”“What a criminal!”“No, I’m boarding a flight to Israel. They invited me to be the keynote speaker at the 27th International Jerusalem Symposium on Sports Medicine.”

(The Diversity Award recognizes members with outstanding commitment to making orthopaedics more representative of and accessible to diverse patient populations. Dr. Fu has promoted and supported global orthopaedic education, scholarship, and interchange. As Department Chair he has diversified the residency program as well as the Department faculty. A living example of diversity, his stature as a recognizedworld leader allows him to be a strong voice for diversity.)

From a cool “飛仔” in St. Paul’s College, consuming his time on vinyl records, guitar, basketball, and creatures of the opposite gender… to a stuffy Distinguished Service Professor, Chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery, President of this, President of that… What went wrong along the way?!

Freddie says: “My story is try to have fun in the work I am doing, nothing more to it.” What a bunch of bull – so generic, so lame. We all do that – try to have fun in our work. How come it didn’t work out the same for us? How come we didn’t get our awards, accolades, and recognition as he did?

What makes a school? The student body is the heart and soul of a school. To think that we – class of 1968 classmates – all bear some small degree of contribution to the making of this legend in his character forming teenage years at St. Paul’s College… aren’t we proud?!

Writtten by Dr. Freddie Fu’s classmates, Tenny Doone and Ken Yim of 1968.

In last year’s News from St. Paul’s, we wrote about how active the Class of 1966 had been, as in previous years. Once again – 2010 to 2011 – the Class continues to be extremely busy, productive and very loyal to St. Paul’s College. Here are some highlights of their activities.

Travel has long been a favourite activity for the Class of 1966, particularly as more and more of them are retiring. And being kind persons, of course, they often invite friends and former colleagues to join them. In September 2010, the destination was Jiangjiajie, and here are two photos from that trip. First, the four classmates – Robert Law Chi Lim, Frederick Kan Shiu Cheong, Philip Cheung Kok Kee and Henry Shum Kun Lum. Then the group photo – in front,FreddieChoi,Henry Shum, Philip Cheung and Robert Law, and standing, Rosanna Choi, Frederick Kan, Evelyna Kan, Cynthia Law, Vivian Wong, Winnie Kwong and Pat Cheung.

Oxfam Trailwalker 19th to 21st November 2010 – Team SPC 66

For the third year in a row, the Class of 66 entered a four-person team in this annual 100+ km walk for charity lasting from Friday to Sunday across the New Territories from east to west, up and down the many mountains. This is an extraordinary event requiring a very high degree of fitness, hours and hours of training and a very high spirit of determination and dedication. Continuing the SPC66 tradition

At the end of October 2010,another famous scenic spot in China was a destination – Jiuzhaigao,inSzechuan Province, famous for its lovely autumn leaves, beautiful blue lakes and waterfalls. Time was also spent in Chengdu, where the famous panda centre delighted everyone. A larger group went on this

trip, including Mr. Emerson, who taught six of the alumni soon after he first arrived in Hong Kong in 1964.

On 5th November 2010, the Class held its Annual Dinner at the Craigengower Cricket Club in Happy Valley. Unlike most classes, this is an annual event and not just once every five or ten years. The response is always very good and this year some 40 classmates and three former teachers plus Principal John Kennard and his wife, Linda, enjoyed a sumptuous dinner and the fun of seeing each other again. The teachers who attended were Mrs. Too So Kwok Chun, Mr. Ng Chi Him and Mr. Emerson.

this year were two who have walked each of the three times – Lawrence Ip Ka Lam and Henry Shum Kun Lam – and two who were taking part for the second time – Sonny Yau Tai Nin and Philip Cheung Kok Kee. For such a feat, of course, much support is needed and among those who helped were Sonny’s wife, Cecilia, and his two sons Fred and Nicholas, Philip’s wife, Patricia, Lo Chun Kay and his wife Joanne, Yim Chi Ming, Alan Lo (91), Joseph Ip Chung Sang and his wife Sibia as well as those who were at the starting place early on Friday morning – Fred Kan Shiu Cheong, Chan Yuk Choi and Mr. Emerson.

In addition to the SPC 66 team, the class was also represented by a family team with strong St. Paul’s connections. George Tang Kwok Wing, his two sons Wallace and Sidney who both attended St. Paul’s Primary School and early secondary School, were joined by their mother, Veronica, in completing the whole walk. Pity that Oxfam does not give a special prize for a family group.

(George appeared in the 2009 News from St. Paul’s because his lovely HK flower paintings were chosen by the HK Post Office for a series of beautiful stamps.)

In 2008, the team completed the whole walk in 47 hours and 25 minutes and in 2010, 37 hours and 59 minutes. In 2010, a total of $203,066 was raised by the team for Oxfam and the team gained an outstanding fund-raising award. It is now time to start thinking of (and training for) the 2011 Trailwalker. Anyone interested, either in walking or helping out (and much assistance is always needed), please contact Henry Shum at 9047 9611 or Mr. Emerson at [email protected]. Of course, contributions are always most welcome too!

THE CLASS OF 1970 FORTY YEARS ON, LET’S FALL IN …

The year 2010 marked the 40th anniversary of SPC’s Class of 1965-1970 graduated in 1970. In celebration of this special occasion, a group of former school mates had joined hands in organizing a gala luncheon in December – 青蔥肆拾, to celebrate this particular milestone of 40 l-o-o-o-o-n-g years of friendship and fellowship.

To quote a popular saying by 柴九 in a TVB melodrama: “人生有幾多個十年?” Yeah! We have gone through 4.5 of these 10-year blocks since we met in Form 1 way back in 1965, when we only had to pay 10 cents to catch a sail on Star Ferry, or $1.20 for a seat at the front-stall at Roxy cinema in Causeway Bay. Time flies, we all get older after these years, but surely we are getting wiser too at the same time.

After sitting the School Certificate Examination, some of us had furthered studies in one of the two universities in Hong Kong, while some of us continued studies abroad, going into respective universities in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, Europe, and Mainland China too. Some had gone into the business world after formal education and quite a few started their own businesses, achieving enormous successes along the way. There were also some who had pursued career in the professional fields

like Law, Medicine, Dentistry, Accountancy, Engineering, Education and many more, and achieved high levels of accomplishments. The list is endless. In short, St. Paul Boys’ achievements are simply outstanding and eye catching.

On the family front, some of us had got married at a young age, and we see that their children have grown up to be university graduates recently. A few of us, who were more aggressive, or shall we say more forward looking in one sense of the phrase, had tied the knot at an even younger age and they have become grandfathers to their lovely grand-children already. We’ve also heard that some of our classmates have been spending some quiet times at the Victoria Park as 維園阿伯 already for a while. On the other hand, there are a handful of classmates who are not ready yet to relinquish their bachelors’ status and remain active in search of romance, going after very attractive women as they see fit, much to the envy of their married contemporaries.

From 1970 to NOW, FORTY years had elapsed. To us, the organizing committee, we consider this is a perfect time to get together on a bigger scale (as opposed to functions held by smaller groups every now and then over the past years) and to SHARE and CARE about the well being of our SPC old boys buddies, when we still have time to do so. As a Chinese saying goes, “It will take 500 years of 緣分 to become schoolmates, so we should treasure this 緣分, shouldn’t we?”

“Once again we here foregather…” The class of 2000 had their first ever reunion on 19th June, marking the 10th anniversary of their graduation, at the refurbished Wong Ming Him Hall of SPC campus. It was a happy reunion with about 40 Paulines attended. The hall room was filled with laughter as participants were happy in bringing back good memory of the old days while appreciating the striking change of the campus during the past ten years with a little surprise. Everyone attended enjoyed the party and were looking forward to a bigger reunion at 160th Anniversary of our Alma Mater at December 2011—plus the 15th, 20th, 25th…… anniversary of our class!

All participants would like to thank Andrew Pang and Eamon Chu for initiating the event in the first place. The dinner would not be possible without the help of Miss Josephine Ho for making Wong Ming Him Hall available to us and, despite her insane schedule, sorting out catering issue for us. Last but not

60 YEARS ON BONHAM ROADThe annual dinner of the St. Paul’s College Foundation was held on 4th December, 2010 in commemoration of the relocation of St. Paul’s College at the current site on Bonham Road in 1950. It was held in our newly refurbished School Hall. The display of photos and sketches from the fifties aroused a lot of interest. The contrast reminded us of the work that had been put in to provide us with such a good learning environment.

SINGAPORE IAVE CONFERENCE In January 2011, a group of 23 Form Four students and three teachers left for Singapore to attend the 21st IAVE Youth Volunteer Conference. The main theme of the conference was ‘Volunteering to Change the World’. It aimed to foster friendships and collaboration and strengthen the global outlook of young volunteers.

About 400 youths, leaders, volunteers and experts from different regions of the world met in Singapore to exchange knowledge and experiences on leading volunteering trends among youth. The three-day conference included various training modules, hands-on service projects, creative workshops and inspiring plenary sessions, offering participants the opportunity to impact the world through active participation in volunteer-related causes.

Apart from the conference, there were opportunities for our students and teachers to visit local schools and other places of interest during the tour. Another characteristic feature of the tour was to develop students’ leadership qualities. With teachers’ guidance, participants were given chances to take full charge of the tour, including air-tickets

booking, transportation arrangements, meal choices, sightseeing options and etc. Each and every student took turns to be the Day Leaders, who were required to prepare for the conference, book meals, conduct sharing sessions, arrange transport and choose sight-seeing spots. Leaders of the first or last days were even required

to do airport check-in and the hotel check-out respectively. To many of the students, it was the first time they acted like a teacher, a tour-guide, a leader and an adult. It greatly helped them to develop better time management, broader interpersonal skills and stronger leadership qualities, although their preparation was demanding and time-consuming.

Three major targets had been set for students before the tour - i) learn more about volunteerism, ii) develop stronger leadership qualities and iii) more importantly to better know personal weaknesses and strengths. To a certain extent, all the participants have already attained these targets. Through the conference, they understand the importance of volunteering, and the way volunteering affects people’s lives. Though the conference was over, the 23 delegates still meet regularly to discuss matters related to volunteering services and leadership development. They are going to form a federation named “Federation of Leaders for Youth” or “FLY” which aims to arouse the awareness of young people to help the underprivileged, the needy and the poor. They have also enrolled in many other service and leadership events in order to gain more experiences and better equip ourselves. We believe that these tiny bits will grow big in the long run.

GERMANY TOURThree boys from Form Three, Kwan Lok Him, Alexander, (3D) ,Kwan Siu Kan, Gabriel, (3D) and Chau Ho Sun (3E), spent a month in Berlin, Germany in January 2011. They stayed with local German families and spent their study time at the local German Schools. They said it was such a nice break from the crowded “space” in Hong Kong. They stayed in two host families and enjoyed German jokes, food, culture and education. This one-month experience did give them unforgetful memories for the rest of their lives!

HENAN TOURCommunity Service - Eye-screening for Children (21-25 April 2011)

The eye-screening project was initiated by the Lions in Hong Kong. The project aims at providing free eye screening for children below eight years of age, the age when some eye problems can still be corrected or are still curable. The whole project started in Hong Kong and was then extended to serve children in Macau and China.

Eleven Form 5 students participated in the volunteer service in Henan, China during the Easter holiday. They were accompanied by Miss Emily Chan and Mr. Alex Wong. They joined the 5-day trip of which two days were spent mostly on planes and coaches, and two days were dedicated to the eye-screening service, leaving the group with a few hours for sightseeing in between the long coach rides.

During the two days of eye screening, we served a total of over 500 children, one group being children with physically and / or mental disabilities. Before the

preliminary assessment by our students, some children with hearing impairment who obviously could not hear the music being played gave an impressive and fabulous dance performance with the guidance of their teacher. Their lovely moves and brilliant teamwork touched everybody’s heart. It was clear to all of us that their great performance was the fruit of their hard work, incessant practice and their teachers’ efforts.

This was followed by the eye-screening part. With normal children, there was already the language barrier. Our Putonghua is not exactly excellent. With deaf and mentally disabled children, it was even harder to make them understand what they were supposed to do in the screening process. Fortunately the children’s teachers were there to help to explain the procedures to them with sign language. With their hard work, their creative body language, and mostly importantly, their enthusiasm, our students were able to complete their mission and they enjoyed every minute of it. The eye-screening service has provided a very good opportunity for them to serve and care for others. This was really an educational and meaningful tour.

Our students expressed their gratitude to the school for giving them the chance to experience the joy of giving. They have come to realise that, with a concerted effort, everyone can make a difference.

OVERSEAS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME FOR SCIENCE TEACHERS — SINGAPORE 2011

With generous support from our College, 14 Science Teachers traveled to Singapore from 26th to 30th April as part of their professional training. In this five-day trip, teachers visited three prestigious junior colleges and a world-renowned university: respectively Anglican High School, Raffles Institution, St. Joseph’s Institution and Nangyang Technological University. In this development programme, our teachers had the opportunity to learn more about science education at both the junior and tertiary levels, various science programmes adopted in different schools including their

curriculum, facilities and staff allocation. Most important of all, our teachers were able to exchange ideas of science teaching with local professionals. This trip is proven to be invaluable learning experience and the teachers are very grateful that the College has organised such a development programme.

NEWS FROM THE PRIMARY SCHOOL

As Head Prefects of the Primary School this year, we have the privilege to chat with Mrs Chan our Headmistress after school every day. This year, we noticed that she was busier than ever – apart from special meetings she attended for the building of our new school campus, she also went to England to visit some schools, to see how those schools set up an interesting environment to motivate or enhance learning. When she told us that she was going to write for News from St. Paul’s, we believed that we could do it – we could write to tell you what is happening in the Primary School – we have been here for six years!

The Primary School has given us a lot of chances to temper ourselves through exciting activities. The most memorable activity is Paul’s Action. It is a tour to a far-off village in Qing Yuan, China, for three consecutive days, to experience simple life, to know more about the poor Chinese peasants, and most importantly, to show our care and support to them. Although we were only primary 5 boys, Mrs Chan wanted us to make our own decision in whether or not to take part in this service tour. She wanted our active participation.

During those three days, we had to walk long distances travelling to the school from the village and back. We attended classes with the village children, ate every meal with them and slept in their homes. We visited the poorest families in the village. Their houses were small. They had only simple furniture and very few facilities; the walls were charred. Most homes did not have a water closet, let alone a shower

or a bathtub. We all felt sorry for them. The peasants looked after us well. They actually served us with the best food they had. We helped them remove weeds from the field and watched them plough the field and dart seedlings into the wet soil. It was hard work! On the last day we had a ceremony in which we donated money

49

to the families, computers and library books to the school. When it was time to bid farewell, we gazed at the happy faces and said goodbye with tears in our eyes.

In JC 6, we all have a chance to take part in the graduation camp. This year, it was our turn. The camp lasted three days. On the first day, we were all scared of the instructors, because there was hardly any smile on their faces. They only gave orders and shouted at us. When we delayed in completing a task, they punished us by making us do sit-ups. But actually, we knew that they just wanted us to learn good discipline. After we had learnt their rules and expectation, we started to enjoy the other activities. Throughout the camp, we learnt a lot of life skills, such as how to prepare a meal starting from designing a menu for a balanced diet, followed by careful budgeting, and finally cooking the food for a group of nine team-mates. We also went through training of abseiling and teambuilding. The most important things we learnt were to work collaboratively with others and to solve problems on our own.

Of course, there are lots of other activities going on in the primary school. In competitions, such as Maths Olympics, singing, speech and drama, science, sports, visual art and I.T., our teams are outstanding. Budding Scientists is one of those -our team got into the finals again this year. We are fortunate that we can be part of our school. One thing we feel very proud of ourselves is that we do not just learn to work hard on tests and exams, or to become better than others in competitions, we do try our best to help others. That is why the school provides opportunities for us to lend our hands in fund-raising activities and community service. The teachers always remind us that we are the lucky ones, and that we must not forget to repay our parents and serve the community.

Thank you, St. Paul’s College Primary School!
