For our March meeting we
had a St. Patrick’s Day
Theme. It was a lot of fun.
Nancy had her house well
decorated for this meeting.
During the past two months
we have been knitting strips
for bed blankets for the Status
of Women. We finished these
and presented them. They
were well received. We also
donated many bags of
toiletries. We will remain in
contact with the Status of
Women as our service project
and help them whenever
needed.
Our closing dinner was held
at a local hotel on May 10th.

Two meetings were held
since our last report. Our
Membership is still at 10 but
we are hoping to get a couple
of new Members in the fall.
We attended the Thinking
Day Service and the breakfast
with the Scouters and
Guiders. Our Guild Members
provided lunch after the
service.
The Guild contributed to the
World Friendship Fund.
A silent auction took place at
a meeting which gave us a
time for fun.

Welcome to an exciting
new Guiding year – how
quickly times goes by. For
us here on the east coast, I
believe it’s been the best
summer in a long, long
time. Whether you spent
your time relaxing, camping
or travelling I do hope you
had an enjoyable summer.
For me I spent time
welcoming my second
grandchild, a little girl
(hopefully a future Spark)
weighing in at 8lb 9 oz and
visiting with my grandson
who now is 27 months old.
Watching a child grow
indeed lets you know
exactly how fast time really
does go. I have heard so
many times there is nothing
like being a grandmother
and now that I have
experienced this on two
occasions, these words are
oh so true.
For those just joining a
Guild you will learn as you
go and if you have had
experience in Guiding you
are halfway there. Sit back,
relax and enjoy the process
of becoming an active
Member and for those
returning I am sure you are
eager to share your ideas.
There are many things we
can do. Remember!
Whatever it is – have fun
and “Keep the Spirit Alive”.

Our Guild had an active
and fun winter and spring
with 14 Members.
At our January meeting
we reviewed our plans for
the remainder of the year,
and the tapestry drawing.
In February our meeting
was held at Judi Pardy’s
home. Liz Dawe attended
the meeting to assist us with
our tapestry and all
Members had an
opportunity to practise
stitching. This was of
course followed by a great
lunch. We were very happy
to welcome Diane Batten as
a new Member of the Guild
at this meeting.
March saw the group visit
Karwood Retirement home
for St. Patrick’s Day. One
of our Members, Liz
Mooney, who is a gifted
musician, led the group
with her guitar and singing.
We also had invited a
friend, Marg Penney, who
is also a beautiful singer.
The residents enjoyed the
singing and dancing, and a
lunch which was provided
by the Guild.
April saw a visit by Susan
Rideout, a dietitian, at Jan’s
house. This was a very
informative evening and a
great lunch was provided by
Jan.
In May, the group walked
around Octagon Pond
followed by a meeting and
lunch at Pat’s house. At this
meeting the group discussed
the national service project
for Guiding for 2012 -
2013, Sustaining our
Environment, and we now
have a project in mind that
would be our contribution
to this project.
In June we held our year
end BBQ at Sue’s house. A
great evening of fun and
fellowship was enjoyed by
all.
In addition to our regular
meetings the Guild took
part in Thinking Day events
held by Area, sold cookies
and bars. Five Members
attended the Trefoil
Gathering at Lion Max
Simms Camp and had a
wonderful time.
Six of our Members also
attended the ConBaSu Area
dinner.
We are looking forward to
starting up again in
September. We will be
losing one Member who has
moved to the West Coast
though we are hoping she
will join a Guild there and
we will connect with her at
the Gatherings.
We are delighted that the
National Gathering is being
held in NL in 2016 and
wish to advise that our
Guild is very willing to help
in any way we can.

Baccalieu Babes Trefoil Guild
Submitted by Mary Greene
The Baccalieu Babes’ big project for the
past several months has been taking part
in the St. Patrick’s Organic Community
Garden. The garden is situated in the
middle of town on the former St. Clare’s
High School and is owned by the Roman
Catholic Church and loaned to the Town
of Carbonear. After several start up
meetings, we finally “filled our beds” on
May 26 and started planting from seed
and plants on June 14. With compost bins
and no pesticides we are being kind to our
world and with lots of hard work, warm
rain and sunshine we went from wood and
clay to a wonderful haven. We are
looking forward to our harvest in the fall
and returning to another year of Guiding.

2012 Gathering
Under the Purple Umbrella was the theme for this year’s
Provincial Trefoil Gathering held at the Lion Max Simms
Memorial Camp May 25th – 27th.
Forty-three Members were in attendance for the full
weekend, with Hazel Newhook, 98 year’s young, joining
us for Saturday. The main focus of this Gathering was on
Guiding and its History.
The agenda, sessions choices and fun activities that we
enjoyed over the weekend made for a fabulous Gathering.
We had very enjoyable campfires and continued the
singing late into the evenings, with Mary Smith at the
piano.
Congratulations and thank you to the Gander Crossroads
Trefoil Guild for hosting this 16th Provincial Gathering.
This was a fun-filled weekend with reminiscing and
reliving past Guiding days. You ladies did a super job!

Can-ta-ka-te Trefoil Guild
Submitted by Gloria Learning
The Can-te-ka-ye Trefoil Guild held meetings on a
regular monthly basis commencing with a dinner at one
our Members’ homes.
We are still continuing to work on our tapestry and
now have our design transferred to aida cloth. This will
enable us to work on it over the next several months
and hope to have this completed soon. We have also
received the new shirts for our Trefoil Guild. Five of
our Members, Gloria Learning, Marg Breen, Margot
Walsh, Wanda Garrett, and Heather Percy attended the
Provincial Trefoil Guild Gathering at Lion Max Simms
Campsite in May.
Some of our Members attended the Tuckamore Area
Annual Meeting in April and the Tuckamore Area
Appreciation Night in June. Another activity that some
of our Members attended was the Provincial Annual
Meeting held at St. David’s Church.
Three of our Members attended the
Gathering at Lion Max Simms Camp.
We look forward to September, to get
back to our meetings, and
endeavouring to Keep the Spirit Alive.

Hello to Trefoilers everywhere. Hope
you had a very enjoyable summer.
In June, we were invited by the Guiders
to attend a brunch. We would like to
thank them for always including us in
their activities.
Again this year, our meetings were
curtailed. Mabel, our president, had a
second knee replacement.
Looking forward to September

September but with all the family
home from away, they decided "why
not?" Happy Birthday, Ella and best
wishes for many more.
Members are being asked to collect
for the Tim Horton's Food Drive. We
thought this would be an interesting
way for us to support young people
since this target is on the hungry and
homeless children. This will be an
ongoing project until later this Fall.
The Guild Members are also asked
to deliver a batch or two of various
used magazines to Seniors Homes or
Doctor's offices or both.
Our life Member, Jessie Toope, was
honoured for her 50-year contribution
to promoting an awareness of Guiding
throughout the province by way of The
Telegram. After 50 years, Jessie has
retired from this devotion and
commitment even though with mixed
emotions.

Happy Wanders Trefoil Guild
Submitted by Berdina Ford
Happy Wanderers Trefoil Guild has been
holding its own though we've been far away
from each other. A couple of Members
attended the Meet and Greet Luncheon at
Girl Guide headquarters with Chief
Commissioner Chris Burton. It was great to
mingle with other Guild members and for
some to meet the Chief Commissioner for
the first time.
President Berdina attended the Annual
Dinner and Meeting in early June. So, so
many new faces.. so, so many more to meet.
In the Spring, Centennial Embers Trefoil
Guild, hosted a Luncheon at Kenny's Pond
Retirement Centre. Any members, past or
present, of the Guiding movement were
invited to attend. There were a number of
the residents who attended and among them
Jessie Toope, resident and daughter,
Berdina.
In August, some Members joined in the
80th birthday celebration with our newest
member, Ella. Her birthday is not until
Project or still yet, donation for the
local missionary trip to Africa. Six
ladies and youth from Bonavista will be
traveling in October to Africa; their
focus, this time will be on the children's
hospital.
There are so many needs out there.
We try to reach out in various ways and
lend a helping hand wherever we can.

Soiree Trefoil Guild
Submitted by Pat Janes
In January we arrived at the home of
one of our talented Members. There she
very skillfully taught us how to make
three beautiful cards from scratch for
different occasions. She must have the
patience of Job because some of us are not
crafty in the least. Under the influence of
much laughter, we managed to make
Valentine, Birthday and Thank You cards.
Then this Member presented each of us
with a little token she had made for
everyone. It was a beautiful little box with
hearts on it and chocolates inside.
Needless to say, this touched the cockles
of our hearts.
For Thinking Day, we went to a local
restaurant for the Chinese Buffet. We try
to experience different kinds of food each
year in honour of our international friends.
We rather enjoy this catching up on life
around the world and discussing the
different things going on in Guiding.
Some of us were even able to attend Unit
and District celebrations.
A couple of us were fortunate enough to
attend the Vera Perlin Concert at the Arts
& Culture Centre in March. It was entitled
"A Royal Performance" and indeed it was.
These adults may have intellectual
disabilities but they are second to none in
their energy, determination and
enthusiasm. They pull at your heart strings
to the point that you have tears in your
eyes when you stand to applaud their
outstanding performance.
In April some of us attended the
"Michael J. McCarthy Memorial
Readings" at the Mount Pearl Library. A
yearly tradition we really enjoy. Michael,
an established writer, was the husband of
one of our Members. He was a great
teacher who introduced and encouraged
writing to many young adults. His words
live on with many of his books still on
display.
Then off to Holy Heart Theatre we went
to see the Jazz East Big Band with Kelly-
Ann Evans doing a tribute to Queen,
Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston.
Wow, they just took the roof off. It was
exhilarating to hear them play and sing.
This year has flown by so fast that we
were lucky to have gotten together at all.
What with travelling and new grandbabies
being born, everyone has been kept quite
busy. But despite all that we still are a
team and great friends.
They say "good friends are like angels.
You don't have to see them to know they
are there." And that's the way we feel
about all our friends in Guiding.

In March our Guild had a
brainstorming session for ideas for a
Brownie day camp with the theme
Amazing Race. This would be a great
badge opportunity for the girls by
incorporating the four world centres
and local geography. Other ideas
included making passports with
stamps and a scavenger hunt with
photo style clues. More work will go
into this venture when the Brownies
decide upon a time/date.
March being a cold and frosty
month in Labrador, Trefoil Guild
Members helped to serve a hot meal
at the Winter Warm Up at the
Labrador Friendship Centre. This
meal is served to homeless and low
income citizens.
The Guild donated $50.00 to
CWFF.
We put our creative talents to work
in April by making scarves. Kelly
Norman (our in-house craft queen)
showed us how to create a scarf
using two old t-shirts. What a
wonderful environmentally friendly
craft. Instead of throwing out shirts
we reused them! We also brought
along nibbles and different types of
hot beverages to taste.
We gathered at Sue Flynn’s house
in May and had a fun games night.
This was great fun!
We started our summer break in
June with a travelling meal. The
evening stated with pina colada
mock-tails and veggies. We travelled
on to the soup course where we
enjoyed homemade beef vegetable
and vegetarian soups served with
rolls. The next stop included the two
courses: salad/bread and entree. The
salad consisted of mixed greens/
peppers/cranberries with poppyseed
dressing. The entree was a delicious
creamy chicken and pasta casserole.
The final course was dessert where
we indulged in banana split dessert
drizzled with chocolate and caramel
and a yummy chocolate cake with
chocolate pudding dessert.
In conclusion, we have had a great
year thus far. We already have plans
made for Fall 2012. We continue to
support the work of the local
Guiding community and have fun
doing it.

Our Easter night was fantastic as
we made adorable Easter Bunny
Cakes. Everyone enjoyed learning
how to make and decorate the
cakes. Cindy and Wanda love
showing off their cute cakes.
In May it was welcome back to
the Fifty’s. Everyone dressed in
fifty’s attire and prepared to rock
and roll to the music of the fifty’s.
The Lions Club was decorated as
if you walked into an old diner.
There we had hotdogs and ice
cream floats while listening to the
juke box playing the tunes.
The Guild Members went on a
scenic Limo ride around St. John’s
in June. We had the time of our
lives touring St. John’s and
stopping to take many pictures
along the way. Some places the
tour included were Signal Hill,
Jelly Bean Row of Houses and the
Colonial Building. As you can see,
we are “Jumping for Guiding”.
During the summer, we decided
to have a night up to Lamanche
Park on the Southern Shore. It was
a beautiful night for a BBQ and to
roast marshmallows for smores in
the fire. As it was so beautiful, we
decided to pose around the
glorious fire. Oh the memories of
camping as a girl guide with a
little modern conveniences.
As a yearly event, we travel as a
group to the Ferryland Dinner
Theater. The meal is great and the
show is hilarious. A great time had
by all.

Our Guild continues to be very busy and
involved in supporting Guiding in
Newfoundland and Labrador. On March 21,
our Guild presented its EmPowering Girls
Project in partnership with the 1st St. John’s
Ranger Unit. The event included a panel of
extraordinary women to participate in an
age appropriate presentation to girl
Members of Tuckamore Area on the careers
they had chosen, what challenges and
supports they had along the way, and how
Guiding had influenced their career choices.
Presenters were Dr. Kelly Batten Hender, a
geologist; Jennifer Mills, a civil engineer;
Rene Woolridge, an environmental
engineer; and Dr. Jane Seviour, an
anestheologist. The girls asked many
questions about climbing mountains and
studying rocks, height of buildings, riding to
work in helicopters and other large
equipment, Doctors without Borders,
Broken Earth, and volunteering in Haiti.
After the formal presentations, one girl from
each unit presented a short talk on her
career choice and futures ranged from a
fashion designer, a teacher, a veterinarian, a
professional chef, and a peace activist. The
Next year, we expect we may have to
leave on Thursday just to make it on
time for Opening Ceremonies. It was a
great weekend and thanks are extended
to the Crossroads Trefoil Guild for their
organization and creative program.
We held our Annual General Meeting
on June 14. The Guild elections resulted
in Sylvia being elected as President,
Joan as Vice-President, Bev Murphy
Secretary, Barb Boone as Treasurer,
Debbie as Communications, and
Carolyn as Recognition of Service.
As our Guiding year comes to a close,
we are now planning for our Fall camp
in September. Happy Guiding to all.

The Annual Thinking Day Tea was held at the Girl Guide
Hut Gander on Feb 18th with approximately 40 Guides and
Friends of Guiding in attendance. Our special guests for the
evening were two Rangers; Kailey Dalley and Abby Moss.
They did a very enlightening presentation about their years in
Guiding from Sparks to present time. We were also delighted
to have Maria Hibbs sing a song in German to represent
Guiding internationally. Maria is the daughter of Carole
Hibbs; secretary of our Guild.
Donations of knitted Teddy Bears were also presented to
Phyllis Whatley, President of the Ladies Hospital Auxiliary.
Our service project was for school supplies which were
brought by most people attending the afternoon tea and were
distributed to schools in Botwood and Gander. Caps and
mittens were knit by Elizabeth Rose and also given to the
schools. Donations of various items were donated to the
SPCA.
Our main focus after Thinking Day was the preparation for the
provincial Trefoil Gathering to be held at the Lion Max Simms
Camp May 25th – 27th. Meetings were held bi-weekly to prepare
for the Gathering. The Provincial Trefoil Gatherings main focus
was on Guiding and its history. We were pleased that our now
Chief Commissioner Sharron Callahan could attend. Our
fundraisers for this event realized donations of $250.00 being
made to both The Sharron Callahan Member Assistance Fund
and The Elizabeth Spencer Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Forty-three members attended the Gathering for the full
weekend, on Saturday our 44th member attended Hazel
Newhook age 98 years has been a member of Gander
Crossroads Guild for many years, everyone was thrilled that she
was able to attend and participate. Christine Oake paid tribute to
Hazel during the banquet.
We feel our Gathering was very successful and we thank
everyone for attending.
On June 9th Gander Crossroads Trefoil held their election of
officers. The new President is Nancy Dreddy, Vice President
Ruth Crewe, Treasurer Jane Bussey as well as correspondent for
News for You and Secretary Judy King.
Our Trefoil activities concluded for the summer with a
Barbeque being held at Deryldene Tucker’s house, a great
evening was had by all in attendance. Many thanks again to
Deryldene who is always the perfect hostess.
In closing I would like to say a special thanks to the Gander

three years while serving as their president and a big thank you
to Marg Breen for her support in preparation for the Provincial
Gathering. Thanks again to all who made the provincial

experiences were shared during the meal
as well as during our meeting when our
archival photo album was circulated.
Further items for O’Shaunessey House
were collected at this meeting with the
expectation that we would continue
gathering items at the next few meetings. It
was also noted that our Guild tapestry was
delivered to headquarters and accepted.
On February 26 a few Members attended
the “Thinking Day” worship at Bethel

For our St. Patrick’s Day themed March
meeting we met at the Sports and

special project to knit hats and dolls for
Canadian soldiers to give to Afghanistan’s
children was presented and several
members agreed to support this project
with their knitting. Service pins were
presented to Members. Pat Hapgood
and Myra King both received their 50

for an army of leprechauns. For our
activity we each created a watercolour

Member printed information on how to
choose a subject and make a quick
drawing, prepare the paper and items
for painting, and create the watercolour
landscape.
On April 19 a number of Members
participated in our ongoing fund raiser
of providing hospitality and a meal for

This time of year is a very hectic time for
our Area and District Commissioners.
They are in process of organizing their
districts, setting up new units and it can get
pretty overwhelming for many of our
volunteers. As we get ready to open units
and recruit new Guiders there is a lot of
paperwork involved, completing the
interviews, and reference checks. I am
looking for ladies to help our
Commissioners. An extra pair of hands can
certainly help lighten the workload. With
this in mind, I am asking if there are any of
our Trefoil Members who would like to
help out by doing some of the phone
calling to help speed up the process of
completing reference checks for our
Guiders. Sometimes because of how
busy we all are the reference checks
will get placed on the back burner this
in turn keeps our Guiders from

Hope everyone enjoyed the wonderful
summer – hot and dry! Who would have
ever thought we would have a summer like
this in Newfoundland!
Our Guild once again had some
difficulty getting together since some of
our ladies were away or were busy with
other things. We did manage to have a few
meetings though.
Donations were sent to the Girl Guide
Memorial Fund in memory of Roxie
Hudson and Olga Pieroway. We
discussed getting new shirts; some of
the ladies are checking out some
possibilities. We have a volunteer to
try to do a tapestry so we are in the
process of deciding what design to use.
Card making was also discussed but no
decision was made.
Two of our Members attended the
Provincial Gathering at Lion Max
Simms Camp and thoroughly enjoyed
the weekend.
