Rachel Beswick on Acts Chapter 7 In our B@9 videos we have been following the journey of the early church through Acts. We’ve seen the ascension of Jesus, the coming of the Holy Spirit and the church start to grow. This week we see how the church continued to grow, even in the face of opposition. Stephen, “a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit”, marked out for leadership by the apostles, ends up in opposition to the religious authorities. He argues that they have their priorities wrong, that their ancestors were always opposing God’s messengers and they are doing the same now by trying to stop people following Jesus. This ends with Stephen becoming the first Christian martyr. It’s a difficult passage to read, but we can take a positive message away from it. We get angry about the things that we care about, and when we meet people who act out their faith in a way that is different to us, and perhaps want us to do the same, it can feel a bit threatening- taken to ex- tremes, this ends up in conflict. The religious authorities in Acts didn’t kill Stephen because they wanted to oppose God’s plan, they did it because they cared so much about God and the things that they thought were important to God (purity laws and the temple) that it really hurt them

Rachel Beswick on Acts Chapter 7In our B@9 videos we have been following the

journey of the early church through Acts. We’ve seen theascension of Jesus, the coming of the Holy Spirit and thechurch start to grow. This week we see how the churchcontinued to grow, even in the face of opposition.

Stephen, “a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit”,marked out for leadership by the apostles, ends up inopposition to the religious authorities. He argues thatthey have their priorities wrong, that their ancestorswere always opposing God’s messengers and they aredoing the same now by trying to stop people followingJesus. This ends with Stephen becoming the firstChristian martyr.

It’s a difficult passage to read, but we can take apositive message away from it.

We get angry about the things that we care about, and when we meet people who act out their faith in away that is different to us, and perhaps want us to dothe same, it can feel a bit threatening- taken to ex-tremes, this ends up in conflict. The religious authoritiesin Acts didn’t kill Stephen because they wanted to opposeGod’s plan, they did it because they cared so much aboutGod and the things that they thought were important toGod (purity laws and the temple) that it really hurt them

to see someone try to change the way people lived outfaith in God. It can be hard to hear and take on a mes-sage like that.

So, when we come across someone who challengesus or does things differently, we need to think, what canI learn from this person? Or what might God be trying toshow me? Or what could we achieve if we work togetherto serve God? [RB]

Diane Roberts on Daniel Chapter 2Daniel had been taken as a captive to Babylon where

he had been given a place on the King’s administration. The King had a dream which really disturbed him.

His wise men, magicians and sorcerers could notinterpret it as he demanded they tell him what the dreamwas before they interpret it! They said he was askingthe impossible. It was beyond their ability and the abilityof their gods.

The frustrated king demanded all the wise men inBabylon be put to death. This included Daniel.

Daniel knew that God was able to do the impossible. He and his friends prayed. God revealed the dream toDaniel, resulting in the King recognising God as supreme.

Prayer was important to Jesus. He often went aloneto pray. Think of the situations he came into – teachingabout God, healing, opposition from religious leaders.Jesus drew strength from God through prayer.

Knowing what lay before him he prayed in theGarden of Gethsemane and God sent angels to ministerto him. Through prayer he had the strength to go to thecross for us. To die in our place so that we can have arelationship with God. So that we too can talk to God.

When things seem impossible, remember that God isGod of the impossible, able to do more than all we ask orimagine.

Praying in faith, believing that God hears andanswers the prayers of his saints, gets results – even ifthe only result is simply the unburdening of our fears andanxieties so that we no longer carry our burdens alone.

Daniel prayed and God changed the situation forhim. Jesus prayed and God gave him the strength to gothrough with the task ahead of him. Either way, Godanswers our prayers. He is the God of the impossible, able to do exceedingly abundantly more than we ask orthink. [DR]
