Letter from the Editor

Over the past 3 months the Clubs have been a hive of activity with the refurbishments at both sites. We felt that the venues

had become a bit drab and now feel that the new atmosphere and furniture will ensure our members enjoy their time with us in comfort for years to come. We’ve already received great feedback, with many already visiting to ‘check it out’.Our Chefs are busily preparing our Autumn/Winter menus and behind the bar you’ll find a tipple to tempt your taste buds. At Club Kilsyth, our calendar is full with fantastic events, with ‘I Still Call Australia Home’, and Clairvoyant Night, as well as the introduction of the half price meals for kids on Tuesday. There really is something for everyone!Club Ringwood has launched ‘Wine on Tap’ with great success, with a range of white wines available by the glass or carafe. They have also installed a new beer tap system, presenting the opportunity to offer our members a greater range of beer.

We’re also happy to announce that Club Ringwood will have the addition of a new accessibility ramp at the main, front entrance. This improvement will assist access to the Club and we hope to commence construction in the near future. Also, in the next edition of the Club News we will celebrate Club Kilsyth’s 20th Birthday. To celebrate, we’ll be giving you the gifts! With a range of offers and give-aways it will be a month long celebration. The Clubs are finalists in this year’s Community Clubs of Victoria awards - keep an eye out in the next edition to hear how we went!

During her time at Club Kilsyth, Sharon’s work ethic has earned her respect and admiration amongst the staff, management and our members and guests. Sharon prides herself on her customer service and regularly goes above and beyond the call of duty.Sharon is always there with a smile and her passion for the industry is truly admired by all staff, managers and members. Sharon has been an integral part of our team in the TAB, forming close friendships with many customers. Her personal service has created strong bonds with our members who quite often just drop in to say “hi”.

Farewell. . . . .to one oF the Clubs Finest FilliesThis May the Club will bid a sad farewell to one of our longest serving staff members. After more than 13 years as matriarch of Club Kilsyth’s TAB Sharon has decided to hang up her boots and call it a day.

Nothing is ever too much to ask for – and Sharon is always ready to deliver excellence in customer service to the patrons in the TAB.She always has time for her co-workers, lending an ear and always has a full jar of gummy lollies to tempt people to pop over to the TAB for a quick hello. We would like to wish Sharon all the best for her retirement, where she hopes to spend some time travelling and enjoying her time with her grandchildren. We look forward to seeing her on the other side of the counter soon!

Dine in the Bistro

Mothers Dayfor a chance to

WIN two nights atSeville Estate, Yarra Valley

Sewn RoséBeautiful light salmon pink with a pale hue. Lifted showing floral, spice and nutty characters. The palate displays fresh red berry fruit adding depth and intrigue. The barrel ferment and extended lees contact give a layer of nutty texture. A fresh yet textural style to drink and enjoy now.

Nestled just off the Warburton Highway, Seville Estate is one of the Yarra Valley’s finest producers. Surprisingly in a region more renowned for its red wines produced from Cabernet and Pinot Noir, it was the Seville Estate Shiraz that received the most attention, quickly becoming one of Victoria’s most sought after wines. With a wine making heritage of over 35 years, the winery continues to be a favourite with wine enthusiasts.

Seville Estate has extended its hospitality and now offers boutique style accommodation on the property overlooking the vineyard and lake with a backdrop of soaring views of the Upper Valley. The Estate offers a perfect destination for a weekend or short break away and consists of three beautifully designed and uniquely styled self-contained apartments for couples to enjoy. Offering king-sized beds, en suite bathroom, a kitchen and a private balcony to enjoy the Estate’s award winning wines, fresh air and an abundance of native wildlife and birds. Rooms start at $270 a night. Check out their website for more information or to make a booking.

Room with a View

Sewn Pinot NoirLifted cherry and all-spice fill the aroma, whilst underneath a more savory tone, with clove and earthy characters. The palate is delicate showing red berry fruit, cinnamon and toasted oak. The tannins are fine and silky which complement the darker earthy tones.

You’ve been together for a long time, since 2006. How did you come together? The idea for the show came about from a comment from a muso friend of mine, David. He said “You move across the stage like Stevie Nicks” I said “Oh wow really?”At the time I was thinking about a new show we could do as a transition from the Cover Band Scene. It was the answer I was looking for, and so the first Tribute to Stevie and The Mac in Melbourne was born! And 12 years later we are still performing.

What makes yours one of the best Fleetwood Mac Tribute Shows?Well I have found the most amazing musicians to work in Gypsy. Talent shines and they are all stars. Julee Johnson vocals, Chris Smith vocals / Bass, Michael Balcombe Guitar/Musical arranger, and Greg Latham Drums. These guys are among Melbourne’s top musicians, who not only “get” the music, but can play it like they own it. This is definitely part of what our now large audiences are relating to about our shows.Gypsy charismatically draws the audience into the journey of Fleetwood Macs unique music. We have worked hard in the show to be authentic vocally and instrumentally. The vocal harmonies, so indicative of Fleetwood Mac, speak for themselves. We have the perfect vocal blend, it’s amazing !

I’m very proud of the show.Personally, I have put a huge amount of study into my role as Stevie. My presentation of the music she writes is so important. There are diehard fans in Australia who want to see a performance with the essence of Stevie and her songs. I truly respect that and strive for that in all my shows.

What’s your favorite Fleetwood Mac song and why?Really hard to pick one, I love them all. For me it’s ‘Dreams’ and ‘Silver Springs’. Each song is a gem. I get requests to sing ‘Silver Springs’ so much, it’s beautiful. It was left out of the Rumours Album but shines on its own! Both songs are about love and heartache. ‘Dreams’ is the only #1 hit song that Fleetwood Mac had, written by Stevie

If you met your band counterpart, what would you ask them?OMG that’s a hard question. Can we do a song together?

What advice would you have for someone putting together a tribute show?Choose carefully an iconic artist or band, study the template of their music. Absorb as much of their recorded music as you can. Image and marketing and performance are quintessential to your success.

Cheers & rock on Gold Dust Woman!

Performing at Club Ringwood on the 28th of July and featuring the show-stopping talents of Peta Balcombe

as Stevie Nicks, Julee Johnson as Christine McVie, Mike Amber on lead guitar, Chris Smith on bass/vocals and Greg Latham on drums, this is the ultimate fan experience not to be missed.Delivering the authentic sounds and visual styles, ‘Gypsy’ captures the true essence of what made Fleetwood Mac the global success they continue to be today.

We caught up with the band and asked them a few questions…

I Still Call Australia Home: The Peter Allen Story provides audiences with an intimate experience of storytelling and song through the eyes and vocals of one of Australia’s most

talented showmen! Peter Allen’s rise to stardom was nothing short of fascinating and complex.

In this show, Allen’s story is thoughtfully brought to life alongside the leading ladies who came and went, but nevertheless remained an important part of his journey to becoming

more than simply “the boy next door.”Starring Jonathan Guthrie-Jones as Peter Allen and supported by Adrienne George

(Judy Garland), Nicole Kapiniaris (Liza Minnelli), Gabrielle O’Brien (Marion Woolnough) and Alexandra Clover (Olivia Newton-John) and featuring some of Peter Allen’s

most-loved and bewitching songs including; ‘Rio’, ‘I Still Call Australia Home’, ‘Tenterfield Saddler’ and ‘I Honestly Love You’ this is one show you surely do not want to miss!

What’s happening behind the bar at Club Ringwood

TAP talkSome have noticed our new beer taps along with our renovations. This gives us a greater opportunity to rotate through a great range of craft breweries. We are now spoilt for choice with many different brewers and brews being available. We will keep regular seasonal beers on tap but will rotate as many craft breweries as we can through our available taps. It was evident at our Bridge Road beer dinner that customers like trying different style beers. So if you like one of our ‘guest’ beers on tap, drink it while it lasts and if you don’t like it, don’t worry there will be a new guest beer to try soon! Got a crafty recommendation? Email [email protected]

May the Force be with you ...Call them juicy, call them hazy, call them crazy, New England IPAs (NEIPA) are coming to Club Ringwood.

Unfiltered and golden in colour, this style of beer is not as big in bitterness as an Imperial Pale Ale (IPA) but has a BIG ABV backbone. The style is lush and juicy with tropical flavours and we are lucky enough to get our hands on a few kegs from Hop Nation. Their ‘Jedi Juice’ was a crowd pleaser at the Great Beer Spectacular (GABS) 2017 and has been

made part of Hop Nations core range.BEER PROFILE: Hazy, juicy and with a citrusy hop aroma – finishing off with intense flavour and a great mouthfeel. Featuring Riwaka, Nelson Sauvin, Citra and Mosaic hops – this beer will bring out the Jedi in everyone. Unfined and unfiltered, the JEDI JUICE pours quite hazy in the glass with a bright orange colour. Available in pots/ schooners/ pints & jugs. 7.1% ABV.

WINDERMERE & KILSYTH BaSKETBaLL WORK TOGETHER TO STOP FaMILY VIOLENCEWhen Garry Conner, CEO of Kilsyth Basketball heard the statistics about the effects of family violence he knew he needed to take action at both a community and personal level. The Montrose resident and father of four, joined a team which will raise funds for Windermere Child and Family Services by trekking the Kokoda Track in October this year. Not-for-profit Windermere provides a range of prevention and intervention-based supports for those experiencing family violence in Melbourne’s South East.On average, one woman a week and one man a month is killed by a former or current partner in Australia. Family violence also has a profound impact on a person’s financial situation and is a leading cause of homelessness nationally. Last year 34,000 children sought homelessness services due to family violence. (Source: Australian Institute of Health and Welfare statistics).“The statistics are very confronting. When I consider we have 5,000 families connected to Kilsyth Basketball it becomes a very personal concern for me. Family violence will impact on some of the children and parents we work with,” says Garry.Garry’s personal support of Windermere’s Trek to End Family Violence, closely aligns with the implementation of Kilsyth Basketball’s “zero tolerance” policy for violence and bullying.Kilsyth Basketball has recently implemented a number of policies to ensure children enjoy a safe playing environment. This includes the services of a chaplain, and stadium monitors who ensure that both supporters and players treat each other with respect and behave appropriately. Windermere’s Trek to End Family Violence will be led by AFL legend and Windermere Ambassador Matthew “Richo” Richardson who has also lent his support to the cause.“It’s wonderful to see local organisations taking a leadership role in putting a stop to violence in our community. Together, we can work to make a positive difference and have a community where violence is not tolerated,” said Windermere CEO Dr Lynette Buoy.Garry is preparing for the gruelling Kokoda Track by completing regular training on the famously steep Glasgow Track in Montrose.

The cause to End Family Violence, culminates in trekking the Kokoda Trail in PNG in October 2018 along with another 20 committed trekkers and volunteers.

To support Garry and Windermere’s Trek to end Family Violence make a tax deductible donation, at: windermere-kokoda.everydayhero.com/au/garry-conner-2or in Community donation points around the Clubs.Garry is holding a fundraising Gala EveningClub Kilsyth Saturday 5 May$80.00 per headFor more information or to book email: [email protected] or call 0456 251 825

Constable Drew Tice has spent his working life helping the eastern suburbs community both as an Ambulance Victoria paramedic and currently as a police officer at the Croydon Police station.Drew is just 40 years young and is battling his second bout of cancer. Drew and his wife have 2 boys, Harvey 3 years and Luca 7 months.About 6 years ago, whilst working as a paramedic, Drew was diagnosed with lymphoma, a particularly aggressive cancer that targets the patient’s white blood cells. Drew visited medical specialists in September 2017 for a check-up and was devastated to learn that the lymphoma had returned more aggressively than in his first battle with the disease.

Drew has undergone intense chemotherapy over the last few months which has taken its toll upon him both physically and mentally. He was in the final stages of preparation for a bone marrow and stem cell transplant procedure which would have bolstered his battle against this aggressive cancer. We are hoping to raise funds to assist Drew and his young family towards the costs of the medical treatment and the upkeep and day to day costs of running a family home whilst unable to work.
