FCN Board Elects Officers for 2014By Billy Wooten

Your new FCN Board of Directors recently met and among several items of business was the election of officers. The Board decided to use the Chairman/Vice-Chairman structure instead of the Co-Chair style that has been used for several years. Billy Wooten was elected Chairman.

He is a longtime supporter and member of FCN who is returning to the Board after having served a term several years ago. Elected Vice Chairman was Wil Jones, who last year served as Co-Chair. Molly Talbot was elected as Treasurer and Embee McDaniel was elected Secretary. Both are newcomers to the Board. Bobby Jeffery returns as the Parliamentarian. The new officers thanked the outgoing Co-Chair, Travis Sawyer, and Treasurer, Hank Reineking, for their service and leadership to the organization.

Sawyer continues on the Board while Reineking decided to retire.

Food Drive

At The December

SocialBy Billy Wooten

At the December First Saturday Social, FCN will once again collect food for the Thomas Park Food Pantry. The Pantry has been operating almost 20 years. It is located behind St. Paul’s

Episcopal Church on 34th Street, and gives out food bags every other Tuesday morning. On a typical Tuesday more than 250 needy individuals are in line before daylight for the food, which is handed out starting at 7AM. Attendees at the December Social are asked to bring can and dry goods. There will be collection boxes on the porch at the door. The last time we organized a food drive for the Pantry, we delivered more than an SUV could hold of food.

We were a blessing to many who are less fortunate. Let’s again be that blessing! For more information about the Thomas Park Food Pantry, go to http://stpaulsavannah.org/mission-outreach/food-pantry/

Hallmark Removes ‘Gay’ Lyric From Holiday OrnamentBy Jase Peeples

After receiving a wave of criticism, Hallmark is apologizing for replacing the word ‘gay’ with ‘fun’ on a new holiday ornament.

Greeting card company Hallmark drew criticism earlier this week when they released a holiday ornament with changed lyrics to the song “Deck the Halls,” reports the Associated Press.

The ornament, a tacky red, green, and gold sweater, featured the line “Don we now our FUN apparel,” with “fun” replacing the word “gay.”

However, Hallmark’s attempt to be politically correct caused an immediate backlash.

“To me ... ‘gay’ still means happy — joyful — I refuse to let the word [be] hijacked by the same-sex relationship community,” one Facebook commenter wrote on the company’s wall Thursday. “I will also avoid Hallmark from this point on.”

Initially, the company defended its decision to update the lyrics of the classic carol, claiming the word “gay” would leave the lyrics on the ornament “open to misinterpretation.”

“The trend of wearing festively decorated Christmas sweaters to parties is all about fun, and this ornament is intended to play into that, so the planning team decided to say what we meant: ‘fun.’ That’s the spirit we intended and the spirit in which we hope ornament buyers will take it,” the company said in a statement.

However, Hallmark updated the company’s response to the PR nightmare induced by the sweater ornament to include an apology on Thursday. “We’ve been surprised at the wide range of reactions expressed about the change of lyrics on this ornament, and we’re sorry to have caused so much concern,” Hallmark said. “We never intend to offend or make political statements with our products, and in hindsight, we realize we shouldn’t have changed the lyrics on the ornament.”

School Agrees to Publish Tuxedo-Clad Student’s PhotoBy Trudy Ring

After action by LGBT rights groups, transgender student Jeydon Loredo will have his senior portrait, with him wearing a tuxedo, in his school yearbook.

Officials of a Texas school district have agreed to allow a transgender boy to have a picture of him wearing a tuxedo in his high school yearbook.

Administrators of La Feria Independent School District had initially rejected Jeydon Loredo’s senior portrait because he wore a tuxedo and not “feminine attire such as a drape or a blouse,” according to a press release from the Southern Poverty Law Center, which assisted the student in the dispute. SPLC and the Human Rights Campaign demanded that Loredo’s photo be allowed in the yearbook and threatened to sue if it was not.

In an agreement reached Friday evening, attorneys for the school district provided written confirmation that Loredo’s photo will appear in the yearbook. District staff will also present the school board with a proposed policy to prohibit discrimination based on gender expression, and attorneys will ask the school superintendent to apologize to Loredo and his mother.

“We are very pleased that the school district has recognized Jeydon for who he is and will allow his photo in the yearbook along with all his classmates,” SPLC staff attorney Alesdair Ittelson said in the release. “This is a signal to other school districts that transgender students should be recognized as important members of their communities rather than ostracized and subjected to discrimination. We applaud Jeydon’s courage in standing up for his rights.”

HRC president Chad Griffin also issued a statement, saying, “We’re thrilled Jeydon will be getting the justice he deserves. It’s a shame that it took a threat of legal action for the school board to make the right decision, but we’re grateful that, in the end, Jeydon’s photo will be included in the yearbook. Discrimination has no place in our society — especially our schools.”

In Historic First, Senate Approves ENDABy Sunnivie Brydum

For the first time in history, the U.S. Senate has approved a bill that would outlaw discrimination in employment based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

The final vote was 64-32 in favor of passing the Employment Non-Discrimination Act on to the House of Representatives, according to C-SPAN.

All 54 Senate Democrats who were present voted for the bill, as did ten Republicans, including surprise “aye” votes from John McCain and Jeff Flake, both of Arizona.

As debate came to a close Thursday afternoon, senators voted down an amendment from Pennsylvania Republican Pat Toomey that would have expanded the number of groups and individuals who could discriminate against LGBT people based on religious beliefs failed by a vote of 43-55.

Toomey, who voted to invoke cloture and begin debate on the bill earlier this week, said he believed his amendment made an effort to relieve tension between “two vitally important American values”: equality and religious liberty. In explaining how his amendment would affect the scope of the law, Toomey noted that some religious-run organizations take part in secular activities but should still be exempted from adhering to ENDA’s nondiscrimination orders.

“I think the agreement is that religious institutions, including those engaging in some secular activities, should be exempt from engaging in activities that contradict their religious beliefs,” Toomey said on the Senate floor Thursday. Toomey offered examples of such instances where businesses serving the public should be allowed to discriminate, including a gym run by the Mormon Church, a Presbyterian-run retirement home, or a Jewish community center.

Several Democratic senators took the floor in opposition to the amendment, noting that the chamber already approved language exempting faith-based organizations and clergy from ENDA’s discrimination protections.

“This amendment threatens to gut the central premise of ENDA,” said Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa, who opposed the amendment. “The amendment is ill-defined, and opens floodgates to all kinds of court cases.”

Vietnam Legalizes Same Sex Wedding CeremoniesBy Robdan Robert

Hanoi — Vietnam has legalized same-sex wedding ceremonies, giving couples the right to live together.

While the unions won’t be recognized as marriages, gay rights activists in the southeastern Asian country say the government is on the right track.

The decision comes after two fines were imposed last year to two same-sex couples who held weddings ceremonies in Vietnam.

The couples were charged with holding a ceremony “contrary to the habits and customs of Vietnam” and violating the Law on Marriage & Family of Vietnam, which outlaws same-sex marriage, said reports.

After the law was challenged, however, the government backed down, and has decided to allow same-sex weddings.

The government was scheduled to hear a bill that would make gay marriage legal, but even though government ministers say they back the measure, the vote was delayed, according to reports.

Justice Minister Ha Hung Cuong said a gradual transition towards marriage equality is the correct approach for Vietnam.

Hawaii Gov. Signs Marriage Equality BillBy Trudy Ring

Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed the bill into law today, ending a two-decade journey to marriage equality in the Aloha State.

Hawaii governor Neil Abercrombie today signed the state’s marriage equality bill into law, meaning same-sex couples can begin marrying December 2.

Abercrombie preceded the signing with remarks about a lesbian friend, who he said told him, “I have spent my entire life waiting for equality,” and had also discussed her feelings of invisibility.

“Today, now, all whose who have been invisible will be visible to themselves and the whole world,” Abercrombie told those gathered at the Hawaii Convention Center in Honululu. Other public officials and entertainers also appeared at the ceremony.

The state Senate yesterday passed the latest version of the bill, which had been amended and approved by the state House of Representatives last week. It goes into effect December 2. Couples in civil unions, which Hawaii has offered since 2011, will be able to convert them to marriages through an online form.

House member Bob McDermott, a Republican, has already filed a lawsuit challenging marriage equality. He contends that in voting on a 1998 state constitutional amendment, voters thought they were reserving marriage for opposite-sex couples, although actually the amendment gave the legislature the authority to define marriage in that fashion, which it then did. With the new law, legislators have changed that definition.

The legislature’s 1998 vote rendered moot a lawsuit that had been making its way through the Hawaii courts throughout the decade. State Supreme Court Justice Steven Levinson wrote the 1993 ruling that denial of marriage rights to same-sex couples violated the Hawaii constitution and said that if the state could not demonstrate a compelling reason for this denial, the rights must be extended. Further court hearings ensued as the state tried to show this reason, but the process ended with the 1998 amendment. Abercrombie today recognized Levinson’s historic role in advancing marriage equality by saying he would give Levinson the first pen used in signing the law.

Hawaii’s Long Wait for Marriage Equality Has EndedBy Trudy Ring

The state Senate on Tuesday approved a new version of the legislation that the governor is set to sign today.

Hawaii legislators gave final approval to a marriage equality bill on Tuesday, and Gov. Neil Abercrombie will sign it at noon Pacific today — ending what has been one of the longest journeys for marriage equality so far. Watch the signing ceremony live at noon Pacific, 3 p.m. Eastern, and 10 a.m. Hawaii-Aleutian time, here.

“After 20 years of work to win the state where it all started, the Hawaii freedom to marry victory today is especially sweet,” said Evan Wolfson in a statement. He’s founder and president of the national group Freedom to Marry who as a lawyer with Lambda Legal argued for marriage equality in a 1990s lawsuit. Wolfson said the wait “shows how far we have come.”

“The same legislature that in the 1990s passed the first of the antigay constitutional amendments now voted resoundingly for the freedom to marry,” he said. “Like the millions of Americans who have evolved to become the national majority for marriage, Hawaii’s leaders opened their hearts and changed their minds.”

The state Senate, which earlier passed one version of the bill, on Tuesday voted 19-4 to pass a new version that contains amendments added by the state House last week, with two senators excused, the Associated Press reports. The amendments delayed the bill’s effective date and slightly broadened its religious exemption, and the House passed the measure Friday by a 30-19 margin. Abercrombie has said he will sign the legislation as amended.

A majority of senators spoke favorably of the legislation during Tuesday’s debate, according to the AP. “This is nothing more than the expansion of aloha in Hawaii,” said Sen. J. Kalani English, a Democrat from Maui.

Praise for the vote came from far and wide, including from the White House, with President Obama releasing the following statement: “I want to congratulate the Hawaii State Legislature on passing legislation in support of marriage equality. With today’s vote, Hawaii joins a growing number of states that recognize that our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters should be treated fairly and equally under the law. Whenever freedom and equality are affirmed, our country becomes stronger. By giving loving gay and lesbian couples the right to marry if they choose, Hawaii exemplifies the values we hold dear as a nation. I’ve always been proud to have been born in Hawaii, and today’s vote makes me even prouder. And Michelle and I extend our best wishes to all those in Hawaii whose families will now be given the security and respect they deserve.”

The governor wants the ceremony to be small and not a “spectacle,” so attendance will be limited to about 200 invited guests, reports regional news source Hawaii News Now.

“We’re going to make it as broad as possible for all of the key advocates that have been working on this for a long time, but at the same time

we are going to be having some security measures to make sure that the event remains consistent with the celebratory mood of what the governor wants,” Blake Oshiro, deputy chief of staff for Abercrombie, told Hawaii News Now before the vote.

The law is set to go into effect December 2. Civil unions, which Hawaii has offered to same-sex couples since January 1, 2012, can be converted to marriages through an online procedure.

Op-ed: Does the Right to Marry Make It Right for You?By Frederick Hertz

Records show the chairman of the board for Jelly Belly Candy Company gave thousands to the campaign in California.

Those Jelly Belly candies everyone loves around the holidays apparently have a connection to an anti-trans campaign in California.

The chairman of the board of Jelly Belly, Herman Rowland Sr., is on record as having donated $5,000 in September to Privacy for All Students, a group dedicated solely to repealing Assembly Bill 1266. The legislature passed the law — which guarantees transgender students have equal access to bathrooms, locker rooms, sport teams and other gender-segregated facilities at school — and it was signed by California Gov. Jerry Brown in August. But Privacy for All Students is trying to get enough signatures to have it eventually overturned.

The group is run by none other than Frank Schubert, who is well known as a political message maker for the National Organization for Marriage in its quest to stop same-sex marriage from being legalized. NOM is also actively campaigning to repeal the law, arguing most recently that “forcing boys and girls to share bathrooms is bullying.”

Frontiers’ Karen Ocamb was first to report the donation on the Secretary of State’s website. And it’s already triggered a Change.org petition from the National Center for Lesbian Rights.

“Jelly Belly Chair Herman Rowland Sr. is using some of his fortune to fund an effort to overturn California’s new School Success and Opportunity Act. This law ensures that transgender students are allowed to participate in school programs and activities just like every other boy and girl,” it says. It asks petitioners to tell Rowland and his California-based company that “all students should be treated equally and have the same opportunities to be successful in school.”

6 Scrumptious Pro-Gay PastasBy Diane Anderson-Minshall

Bertolli posted this image to its social media outlets with the caption “Love and pasta for all!”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

When Guido Barilla, chairman of Italy-based Barilla Pasta, said that his company will never use a gay couple in his ads and if that angers LGBT folks, they should just eat someone else’s pasta, countless LGBT people and straight allies around the world did just that. Despite repeated attempts at apologizing, including a video message where the Barilla chairman promised to meet with “representatives of the group that best represent the evolution of the family, including those who have been offended by my words,” the calls to “Boycott Barilla” continue.

To help you spend your hard-earned gay dollars on worthwhile brands, we’ve collected six fabulous gay-friendly pasta brands that can easily replace Barilla’s spot in your pantry.

BERTOLLI

Want classic Italian you can find at the grocery store? Bertolli is your pasta. The German arm of the company took to social media Friday morning to distinguish itself from its gay-hating B-named competitors with a new image (above) accompanied by the caption “Love and pasta for all!” (“Pasta und Liebe fur alle!”)

“We just wanted to spread the news that Bertolli welcomes everyone, especially those with an empty stomach,” a spokesperson for Orca im Hafen, Bertolli’s social-media agency in Germany, tells AdWeek, which points out that the brand has been gay-friendly in the U.S. for years too.

Activists Pressure Barilla to Add LGBT Employee ProtectionsBy Diane Reynolds

If Barilla is sincere in its apology to LGBT people, it will amend its equal employment opportunity policy, activists say.

LGBT organizations are urging Barilla Group to include protections for LGBT employees and job candidates, following controversial antigay remarks made by the company’s chairman.

Tico Almeida, president of Freedom to Work, a workplace advocacy group, is calling on Barilla Group and its subsidiary Barilla Pasta to amend its equal employment opportunity policy to include LGBT people. At present, the policy prohibits discrimation based on race and religion, but not sexual orientation or gender identity.

“If Barilla is serious about including LGBT people at the dinner table, they should also give LGBT employees a fair shot to contribute in the workplace,” Almeida said in a statement. “We urge the Barilla Group to update their equal employment opportunity policy to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, just as it already bans racial and religious discrimination.”

The pressure from LGBT advocacy groups follows antigay remarks made by Barilla Group chairman Guido Barillo, in which he claimed that the world’s largest pasta producer will never feature gay couples in its advertisements.

“I would never do [a commercial] with a homosexual couple, not for lack of respect but because we don’t agree with them,” Barilla said. “Ours is a classic family where the woman plays a fundamental role. … If [gays] don’t like it, they can go eat another brand.”

After widespread backlash, Guido Barilla made an effort to walk back his antigay comments in a statement published on Barilla’s website Thursday evening in Italy. Trying to stress the company’s “respect” for LGBT people, he said his comments were only meant to stress the importance of the woman in the family. He also said he “has the utmost respect for gay people,” and that he “respect[s] gay marriages.”

“I apologize if my words have generated controversy or misunderstanding, or if they hurt someone’s sensitivity,” reads the statement. “I have the utmost respect for anyone, without distinction of any kind. … In its advertising, Barilla represents the family — because it’s what welcomes everyone.”

A number of petitions protesting Barilla have been posted online, urging a boycott of the company.

PAPPARDELLE’S

Founded by David Bowen and Bill Curtis in Denver in 1984 — when pasta in the U.S. was generally limited to the one basic flavor — Pappardelle’s began as a maker of super small-batch, handmade pasta in a variety of flavors, which the men would create every day at 3 a.m., then deliver to farmer’s markets and white tablecloth eateries in their beat-up Chevy Malibu. Today, though the company is bigger and its products are a staple at the Colorado governor’s mansion, it’s still a favorite in 200 farmer’s markets. And even though it has new owners, it has the same great gay fan base. And we all know you can’t be homophobic and survive a farmer’s market crowd.

BUITONI

Also jumping at the chance to take advantage of the hot water its competitor found itself in, Buitoni shared the image at right on its Facebook page Friday. When a commenter wrote that they preferred Barilla, and alleged Buitoni had dealt a “pretty low blow,” a Buitoni representative replied on Facebook. “Yes, we at Buitoni are a family that loves pasta,” the representative wrote. “And we recognize that everyone has a personal perspective, so please let’s respect those differences.” Buitoni USA is owned by Nestle, which scored a perfect 100 on HRC’s most recent Corporate Equality Index.

SFOGLINI

This Brooklyn-based producer makes small-batch, freshly extruded gourmet pastas that are both amazing and amazingly popular with LGBT foodies. That might have something to do with the cute co-owners, Scott Ketchum and Steve Gonzales. Or it could be because Sfoglini makes amazing shapes and porous textures using traditional bronze dyes, and the mouth feel is topped only by the taste. Among the customer favorites: the porcini trumpets, cuttlefish spacatelli, and the Bronx Brewery BXB Radiators, with five five different barley malts. Oh, and you don’t have to live in New York; Sfoglini offers mail-order and a even a hipster version of the pasta-of-the-month club.

KRAFT MACARONI AND CHEESE

Yep, same cheese mix, same blue box, same great taste. And Kraft is at 100 on the HRC list, meaning it’s just as good with LGBT equality as it is when you’ve got the munchies at 3 a.m.

Op-ed: Does the Right to Marry Make It Right for You?By Frederick Hertz

Marriage equality is coming to a state near you. But a host of factors, including children, finances, and family dynamics, can affect whether marriage is right for you, says attorney Frederick Hertz.

I joined in the chorus of joy over the landmark Supreme Court rulings in favor of marriage equality earlier this year. But at the same time, it’s my sense that insufficient attention has been paid to the really important question that follows from the gutting of the Defense of Marriage Act: whether marriage is right for you and your partner. Being able to access federal benefits can indeed provide a justifiable motivation for marrying — and having access to marriage rather than the second-class status of domestic partnership or civil union (in California, and now in New Jersey as well) is similarly compelling. But remember, straight folks have had the right to marry and obtain federal benefits for centuries, and that hasn’t meant that every straight couple should be getting married. Indeed, if the right to marry meant marriage was right for everyone, the heterosexual divorce rate wouldn’t be so high! Figuring out whether marriage is right for the two of you involves a multilayered analysis, integrating the marital rules of money and property, the public benefits (and sometimes burdens) of being recognized as a married couple, the impact of marriage on your family (and especially your kids, if you are raising children), and the interpersonal emotional dynamic of the marriage decision. Each couple has to grapple with unique needs and concerns, but there are a few key issues that regularly arise for nearly every couple. MARITAL PROPERTY RULES: Each state imposes its own financial rules on married couples, many of which derive from traditional heteronormative notions of family life (i.e. the working husband and the stay-at-home-wife). Assets acquired after marriage are considered jointly owned regardless of who earned them, and debts are equally shared. Premarital and inherited assets are generally treated as separate, and if there’s a dissolution, the local family court adjudicates any property disputes. And if one spouse’s income is

Bill Lifting Ban on HIV Organ Donation Clears HouseBy Michael Regula

House of Representatives has finally lifted the federal ban on the donation of HIV-positive organs to HIV-positive recipients.

Health advocates are celebrating a vote in the House of Representatives that lifted the federal ban on the donation of HIV-positive organs to HIV-positive recipients, updating regulations that had banned the life saving procedures. The HIV Organ Policy Equity (HOPE) Act was passed by the Senate in June, faced no opposition today, and now heads to President Obama to officially sign into law.

The HOPE Act, introduced in the Senate by Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Tom Coburn (R-OK), and Rand Paul (R-KY), had bipartisan support in both the Senate and House. It now directs the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Organ Procurement Transplant Network (OPTN) to develop and institute standards for research on HIV-positive transplantation, paving the way for transplantation once changes to the current network are properly implemented and safety has been assured.

“While many are disheartened by the persistent partisan gridlock plaguing Washington, yesterday’s bipartisan vote was a pleasant reminder that common-sense governance is still possible,” said Kali Lindsey, director of legislative and public affairs for the National Minority AIDS Council.

“By reforming outdated policies banning all HIV-positive organ donations, Congress has provided hope not only to the thousands of people living with HIV in desperate need of a transplant, but also HIV-negative individuals who will benefit from the decrease in demand for un-infected organs.”

According to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), “The number of individuals in need of organ transplants far exceeds the availability of healthy organs; more than 100,000 patients are actively waiting for life-saving organs and about 50,000 more are added annually.” The HRC worked closely with leaders in both chambers to insure a change to current federal law requiring all potential donors to be tested for HIV shortly after their death, eliminating from consideration those found to have been infected with the virus.

Stigma Drives HIV-Positive Couple in India to Drink PoisonBy Nicholas Cimarusti

After being forced from their home, a husband and wife take drastic measures to stop the anti-HIV bullying.

An HIV-positive couple in India consumed pesticide on October 24, a day after his parents kicked them out of their village to prevent the spread of the virus. Asit Nath, 38, died the same day while his 35-year-old wife, Kakali Nath, died two days later, according to the Indo Asian News Service.

The couple, who were from a northeastern village in India, near Agartala, the capital of the Indian state of Tripura, were both diagnosed HIV-positive in 2010 when Kakali was pregnant. Doctors advised her to abort the pregnancy and upon returning to their village, the abuse from relatives and other villagers began. After suffering from years of social ostracization by family and their community, The Times of India reports that the final straw was October 23 when Asit’s parents forced them from the village to prevent the spread of infection.

According to The Times, Kakali Nath left behind a statement to the media that read, “We decided to take the extreme step and die together to save ourselves from further social and family isolation. Ever since the diagnosis, there have been a lot of medical complications, but our mental agony was far worse. Instead of any moral support, our families rejected us. It was very difficult for us to carry on.”

According to the Tripura State AIDS Control Society, there are 1,091 people with HIV in the state of Tripura, and 405 confirmed cases of AIDS.

Abhijit Saptarshi, a local police chief, told Indo Asian News Service, that the case is registered as an “unnatural death” and that there was no criminal complaint filed by anyone surrounding the couple’s deaths. “If any criminal complaint is registered with us,” he told reporters, “we would act accordingly.”

Local activists say that it’s clear that social ridicule led to the couple’s suicide, with the AIDS Society’s project director Tapan Kumar telling Indo Asian News Service, “We have asked our north Tripura District AIDS Prevention and Control Center officials to study the case and reasons behind the suicide.”

higher than the other’s, alimony may be ordered, regardless of who initiated the dissolution. However, couples have the option of contracting out of some of these rules, but it’s not a simple process. Signing a premarital agreement requires a cleary focus of mind on some tough issues, a fair amount of advance planning, and a willingness to spend a few thousand dollars on lawyers. PUBLIC BENEFITS AND RECOGNITION: Much of the political focus on marriage equality has centered on access to public benefits, and for good reason. For some it’s a matter of a green card, and for others it means affordable health insurance. The benefits are especially valuable for couples in which one partner is a low earner or stay-at-home spouse, as they can access Social Security benefits upon retirement or the higher-earning partner’s death and a host of Medicaid and other insurance protections. Be careful, however: If one of you is receiving public benefits (such as low-cost HIV drugs), getting married to a high-earning spouse can disqualify you from receiving those benefits. THE SOCIAL IMPACT OF MARRIAGE: While this is not really a legal matter, it’s important to be cognizant of how the cultural patterns of marriage and societal acceptance are likely to affect you and your family — mostly for the good, but not in every instance. Studies and anecdotal evidence have consistently shown that being married conveys a message of commitment, conventionality, and cohesion that generates emotional and practical support from family members, coworkers, and friends. This is especially true for your kids, who are likely to feel “in sync” with the surrounding social environment. At the same time, for some couples it’s a structure that is unduly confining. And as for the emotional and personal dimensions? Those are for you to explore — and no lawyer should presume to give advice in this territory!

Review of “Masterpiece of Man”By Travis Sawyer

I do not normally do this, however recently I picked up a great fine art publication called “Capolavora di Uomo : Masterpiece of Man.” This hard bound book just jumped at me from the very beginning. It is a collection of world renowned artists, their illustrations, drawings, paintings and digital images of male erotic art and contains works from a well noted Savannah artist Tony de Carlo.

The pieces by Tony de Carlo are extremely vivid and colorful. Featuring a strong Latin American influence his style is very fluid, much like the acrylic medium that he chooses to work with, that lends itself to create such vibrant and stunning imagery of not only men but landscapes and backdrops as well. I personally find his imagery to be one of the most visually pleasing and modest of the works in the book.

Within the book you’ll find images of nude men, bears and even Santa Claus in some not so “children’s book” approach.

With this said I should elaborate on more pieces within the book itself.

I was very taken by the works of Oliver Frey who chooses to use what appears to be acrylic on black canvas. The reverse use of color and medium showcases not only a talented artist but someone who enjoys creating art in a not so typical style. His style almost appears as if you’re seeing the images of young men through a snap shot in the dark.

Cody Ferguson is by far a terrific painter. Using one of my favorite mediums “Oil on Canvas” a very difficult but rewarding medium. His works focus on portraiture of young men showcasing their abs, muscles and partially unbuttoned pants and shirts. Carefully posed to showcase the best of the bodies while being just provocative enough to want to entice you onto the canvas with them. Enjoy his section as you flip the pages on further to explore even more daring and shall I say vulgar pieces.

By Far the most comical and borderline vulgar of the artists I’d have to say would be Logan Kowalsky. His art is teetering on the line of cartoon meets trippy exotic love and sex appeal with a twist of insanity and in a few pieces a side of Santa Claus. I find myself coming back to his works not only because of the amazing attention to detail but for the deep and twisted comical relief. His works “Santa Bound,” “Cop on Santa,” “Santa Whipped” and “Mars needs Santa” have made me chuckle and think “Could this really happen to Santa?”

To make a long story short and a short story worth your time in reading this review I’d highly recommend picking this book up to add to your collection. Whether you’re a collector and admirer of fine art, are looking for that perfect coffee table book, or have a friend or spouse that you’d like to introduce to some great works than this is the book for you. All I can say is enjoy. This book has really impressed me because there is a little something for everyone here.

A Merrie English ChristmasBy Billy Wooten

I Cantori, the well known 24-voice choral ensemble, led by founder Dr. Robert Harris, will perform “A Merrie English Christmas” at St. Peters Episcopal Church, Skidaway Island, on Friday, December 6 and at St. Pauls Episcopal Church on Abercorn and 34th the following Monday evening, December 9. This will be the 23rd year the group has been a part of Savannah’s festive holiday music sound. “Advent and Christmas music written by English composers is historically important as well as musically delightful,” said Robert Harris, who has directed the ensemble since its inception. “We will start with hymns and carols from the late 1400’s, and then progress to Byrd, Mathias, Vaughn Williams and Benjamin Britten.

The program is musically challenging, as you would expect with this line up of great British composers.” Of particular interest is a modern treatment of “Once in Royal David’s City” by composer, Bern Herbolsheimer, who takes a well known carol and weaves it in different directions. “And for all the baby boomers, a great arrangement of Paul Stookey’s ‘A’Soalin’, written in the early 1960s, will surely bring back memories”, added Harris. Stookey was a member of the famous folk group, Peter, Paul, and Mary. Both performances begin at 7:30. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children and can be purchased at the door. Stay current with I Cantori by visiting their Facebook page, ICantoriSavannahGA, or thru their website,
