At this writing, it’s 37 days since we awoke to a changed world with the mass shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando. The taking of forty-nine lives left two already disenfranchised communities, LGBTQ and Latino, shattered and disheartened. Thank you to our good friends at Equality Flor-ida who quickly responded with a GoFundMe effort that raised over $7M to support the costs associ-ated with restoring the families of victims’ and survivors’ lives to some sense of equilibrium in the wake of the hate crime against LGBTQ and Latino communi-ties. Since the tragedy, Our Fund Foundation has become involved as a leader in an effort to support the LGBTQ and Latino non-profit network in Central Florida, relying upon the experience and skills developed doing the same good work in South Florida. We are pleased to share this story with you.

We are also eager to share with you news about additions to our Board of Directors, give you a sneak peek at the Fall Forum scheduled for November 14 and announce the next round of our iGive grants that will be awarded in the Fall.

And the featured agency and business articles in this newslet-ter make me smile because of the amazingly good work that both represent – and because their lead-ership is a sparkling example of what makes living in South Flori-da (and working at Our Fund!) so enjoyable.

STRENGTHENING LGBTQ and LATINO ORLANDO

In the days after the Orlando shooting, a national network of private foun-dations approached Our Fund Foundation about the possibility of lead-ing a consortium of funders to assess the needs of the non-profit agen-cies supporting LGBTQ and Latino causes in Central Florida and oversee a significant investment in the region’s non-profit sector. Our Fund Founda-tion is uniquely qualified for this role because of our proximity to Central Florida and because it is a highly functioning LGBTQ-specific commu-nity foundation with a strong record of impact and success in South Florida.

To date, over $1.3M has been raised for this initiative from private foun-dations with gifts ranging from $40,000 to $400,000. Our Fund’s own Orlando Fund – raised from donors in the days following the shooting – will be added to this fund in order to maximize the impact of those gifts.

Our Fund President & CEO, David Jobin, comments, “The immedi-ate outpouring of support for individuals and families affected by this trag-edy is inspiring. But with my non-profit hat on, I immediately began to think about the infrastructure of agencies that were stretched beyond their capacity to deal with the additional demands placed upon them follow-ing the events at Pulse. I am pleased that Our Fund is being invited to lead an effort to address this situation. It speaks highly of our reputation in the national foundation community that we are trusted with this role.”

The decision to expand Our Fund’s lens beyond South Florida was made in concert between Our Fund’s staff and board leadership. The benefits of devel-oping and strengthening ties with national foundations that might support the work of South Florida agencies supported by Our Fund made the project ap-pealing and provided a local urgency for Our Fund’s participation. Consider-ation was also given to the sheer positive impact of the project. Says Board Chair

iGIVE SocietyThe embodiment of Our Fund Foundation’s support of non-profit agencies advancing LGBT issues in South Florida is its iGive grant program. In May, nearly $80,000 was distributed to 12 worthy organizations and projects. The bi-annual granting period opens again with a Summer/Fall cycle with grant applications due on August 31. Guidelines and applications are available on Our Fund’s website. Please encourage agencies you know doing good work in the LGBT space to learn more about this opportunity. A big THANK YOU to our iGive Society donors who make these grants possible through their generous annual support.

Continued from page 1.Chuck Loring, “It was also not lost on us that had the killer driven southward rather than north, it could have been our own local community that was affected in this manner.”

Our Fund is also pleased to be involved in the Orlando initiative to learn firsthand the best prac-tices associated with this effort as it serves as a na-tional model for how communities can assess needs, direct resources and oversee progress toward strength-ening non-profit networks that advance LGBT causes.

Board Additions

In an effort to build the best and most effective board pos-sible to sustain our mission, we are excited to share with you that two new board members have joined our ranks – Fred Tan and Sue Wilder. Fred Tan has been involved with Our Fund through his work as a Senior Wealth Di-rector at BNY Mellon Wealth Management and is, also, an expert in the field of yoga and meditation. Sue Wilder is a retired bank executive who is known in the commu-nity for her strong vision and leadership on the board of Stonewall National Museum & Archives. Sue and Fred are both already engaged, along with others from the board, in refining and redefining Our Fund’s Strategic Plan.

Fall Forum Date Announced! Our Fund Foundation annually presents a community conversation on topics of national and international importance to the LGBT community and its allies. An informed society makes for an informed philanthropic community – so Our Fund takes seriously its commit-ment to this program. On November 14, 2016, Our Fund will present an esteemed panel of experts to discuss the subject of international LGBT rights. Operating from the viewpoint that all people should be able to enjoy the full range of human rights, without exception, the panel will provide insights about the obstacles to this goal and what we as citizens of the US can do to support change.

Business Council Featured Partner Christopher Dunham

South Florida is fortunate to have a large number of businesses and business leaders who understand the need to support the network of non-profits that improve the lives of those in the region. Our Fund Foundation has depended heavily upon one such business, Dunham Insurance, as a member of our Business Council and

as the sponsor of our annual report. In addition, founder and CEO Christopher Dun-ham (CPIA) signed on early with Our Fund as a First 100 Funder and continues as an iGive Society mem-ber. “Our Fund came on the scene with a vision and a level of professionalism that made me want to be-come involved,” says Chris,

“and I responded to the need for a LGBT community foundation in South Florida.”

A native Floridian, Chris played professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians before he began a successful career with one of the top insurance companies in the country in 1989. In 1997 – recognizing the need for a more personal approach to insurance and estate planning services – Chris founded the agency that bears his name as a family business. With a mission to offer the highest quality coverage at competitive rates, Dunham Insurance pays particular attention to policyholder’s concerns, such as its quality of customer service, the affordability of its policies, and most importantly, the quality of its coverage.

Says Our Fund President David Jobin, “the very first visit I made after I landed at Our Fund was to Chris’s office. His relationship with Our Fund is an impor-tant one – not only because of the financial investment Dunham Insurance makes in Our Fund – but also be-cause Chris is a leader in the community whose sup-port is meaningful as it is seen as an endorsement of Our Fund. On top of all that, he’s one of the nicest guys I know and his whole team (including his receptionist/ mother!) is aware of the important role that Dunham Insurance plays in the community. I can attest that South Florida is a better place to live because of Chris’s generosity.”

YES Institute: Featured Non-ProfitNot everyone is equipped to effectively communicate

about gender and orientation; even well intentioned professionals. Connie Barden and Martha Fugate of the YES Institute in Miami-Dade county realized this phenom-enon back in 1996 after speaking to community leaders and educators about the high incidence of suicide among gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth. Now, cel-ebrating 20 years, the YES Institute continues to expand the conversation by conducting over 200 community dialogues and research-based courses this year to vari-ous communities in many languages including Eng-lish, Haitian Creole, and Spanish. These dialogues fo-cus heavily on educating community members on the topics of gender and orientation for those who work with, care for, or serve young people and their families.

The YES Institute itself holds examples of people who reinforce the importance of the organization’s mission.Take Executive Director of Education, Joseph Zolobczuk, MS Ed., who has served with the YES Institute since the very beginning. “My high school counselors didn’t give me an adequate response to the harassment,” Joseph says as he shares his hardship of being gay in a Catholic high school. The YES Institute was the first place Joseph found positive gay adult role models. He took their Communi-

cations SolutionsTM course twenty years ago; A course that helped frame his conversations and relationships with those who are afraid or opposed to LGBT people and ultimately inspired him to continue his work at the YES Institute.

Eva Leivas-Andino first came to the organization 18 years ago. Although she has known for some time her son Paolo is gay, it took awhile to realize his struggle while growing up in Miami without the support of his mother. “Our re-lationship suffered; because how can you have a relation-ship with someone without effectively and authentically communicating with them?” Eva says. At YES Institute, she found information, education, and support. She later became involved with the work of YES Institute, where she now devotes her life to education on gender and ori-entation; speaking to families in both English and Spanish.

The YES Institute was a recipient of Our Fund Founda-tion’s Spring Grant Program towards their “Safe to Be Me” activities in tri-county area schools to prevent suicide and

ensure healthy development for youth through powerful com-munication and education on gender and orientation.
