3,000 ALY RILEY is 21 years old and has been a Yankee an her whole lie. She is currently majoring in Sport Journalism. Derek jeter was her avorite player growing up, and was the reason she started playing basebalwhen she was our-years-old. She works as a socia media reporter or FOX Sports Live, covering NHL, NFLand MLB. Below, she recalls the game in which Jeter made history and got his 3000th hit- making him the 28th player in history and the only New York Yankee to hit this milestone, and only the second to do so with a home run

    “Jeter kept

     ouling balls off.Ten...he oundthe one.”

Te Yankees congratulate their Captainon his milestone. Well, it was a gorgeous July after-

noon in New York City in 2011. Ihad arrived at Yankee Stadiumaround 12:15, just in time for batting practice. All of the fans were excited, hoping for a big day

from the Captain, Derek Jeter. Ihad seats three rows behind the Yankees dugout, so perfect view-ing in case magic happened. Fastforward to the bottom of the rstinning and Derek had a leadoffsingle. The crowd went crazy, thinking, “Would it FINALLYhappen today?” Move ahead nowto the third inning. All of the fans,

including myself, were on theirfeet watching every pitch Rayspitcher David Price would throw. It was a 3-2 count but Jeter keptfouling balls off. Then...he foundthe one. He drove a 96 MPHfastball over the fence into theleft eld stands, a home run, his3000th career hit! The stadiumerupted with cheers, excitement,

and happiness for their belovedCaptain. I felt absolutely over-

joyed for Derek! Considering he was my favorite player growingup as well as be the only Yankeeto reach 3,000 hits, I was so hap-py! It meant so much to me thatI was there- it was living historyand I was so proud to be a part ofit! All his teammates were goingcrazy, patting him on the head, high ving him, hugging him. It

was so amazing to see. Thcelebration lasted about vminutes before everyone returned to the dugout anDerek gave the Yankee Stadium faithful a curtain cal

Also, his parents, sister, girlfriend at the time, actresMinka Kelly, and other family members were in his stadium suite. Seeing their cheerand tears of joy for Deremade me smile! The atmosphere carried out througthe whole game- the fan were buzzing the entire after

noon, just overjoyed for theiCaptain. All of the playercame from the dugout angreeted Derek at home plat with hugs and high ves. I was a truly emotional day foall fans. In fact, Derek ending up going 5-5 on the daand the Yankees won 5-3 A terric day in the Bronx

GORDON WICKER (right) has been aNew York Yankees an or over 50 years.

Below, he recalls one o his mostmemorable games, Derek Jeter’s final

Opening Day game at Yankee Stadiumin April- a nostalgic day with a ew very

    special guests.

I was hooked when I walked into YankeeStadium when I was 8 years old in 1963. I re-member vividly how green the Stadium grass

was when we came up the walkway and I sawthe eld for the rst time. I was star-struck when I saw my childhood idol, Mickey Mantle.I was born in Brooklyn and grew up in North-ern NJ and closely followed my Yankees when we lived in California and Michigan. The Jeter game I will never forget was hislast home opener this year. I was invited toattend by a group of people from my home

town. There were about 50 people who rentedthe Budweiser Hall of Fame Suite. A friend ofmine from Ramsey, NJ was attending his 51stconsecutive home opener!

It was a cold April day but the crowd was elec-tric and didn’t seem to care. As we settled in to watch the opener the crowd began to buzz....

the 3 retired members of the “Core Four” cameout of the dugout to greet Jeter. It was a great way to begin the Captain’s nal home opener.I think the moment of the day for me is whenthe voice of Bob Sheppard introduced Jeterprior to his rst at bat. It still gives me chills tohear that melodic, booming voice. The game was almost anti-climatic but thehighlight was a Jeter double off the left cen-

ter eld wall that almost left the yard and the Yankees beat the Orioles 4-2.

During his rookie year in 1996, New York Yankees All-Star shortstop Derek Jeter established the Turn2 Foundation to promote healthy lifestyles among youth. While sharing a pizza in a Detroit hotel room,Derek announced to his father that he was ready forhis own foundation. Then and there, they laid theplans for Turn 2.

The name “Turn 2” is symbolic of the dramaticdouble play made by inelders during a game. It alsorepresents Derek’s wish to promote healthy lifestylesamong young people and enable them to “Turn 2”his Foundation for guidance and the much neededhelp to avoid drugs and alcohol.

Turn 2’s mission is to create and support signatureprograms and activities that motivate young peo-ple to turn away from drugs and alcohol and “Turn2” healthy lifestyles. Through these ventures, theFoundation strives to create outlets that promote

and reward academic excellence, leadership devel-opment, and positive behavior. Turn 2’s goal is tosee the children of these programs grow safely andsuccessfully into adulthood and become the leadersof tomorrow.

The Foundation will nurture the children it serves with the cooperation of sponsors, partners, and Turn2 staff. Their commitment and hands on involve-ment is vital for success.

Due to Derek’s close association with West Michi-gan, Tampa, Fla., and New York City, programs inthose areas are of primary concern to the Founda-tion. Since its launch in December 1996, the Turn 2Foundation has awarded more than $19 million ingrants to promote healthy lifestyles for thousands of youths.

I’ve grown up a Yankees fan my entire life.Living just 15 minutes from the stadium, someof my earliest memories are watching games with my dad and sister. Being a part of a group offans that is so passionate about their team is so

incredible and something that I love being a partof. And whether or not you like the Yankees, whocan say anything bad about Derek Jeter? Theguy is a legend. If you walk in to the stadium onany given game-day, more than half of the shirts you see are sporting that famous #2. Many peo-ple were shocked when Jeter rst announced hisretirement but I think it was something thatmany true fans saw coming. Given his age, his recent injuries, and all he had accomplished in his

career it really was the best decision for him. Iknew as soon as he announced it that I had to bethere when he said goodbye to Yankee Stadium. I went to a handful of games last season but none ofthem would top being at his retirement ceremony.

My boyfriend and I arrived at the stadium andtook our seats in the third to last row of the up-per deck, the only seats we were able to snagonce Jeter announced the date of his retire-

ment ceremony. I had never sat that far back inthe stadium but I knew as soon as we took ourseats that it didn’t matter where you were sit-ting, this was going to be an incredible experi-ence. Looking at the eld, we could see the sta-dium ops team setting up what was sure to bea star-studded ceremony. Rows of white chairslined both sides of the ineld, with the podiumin the center. The energy in the stadium was al-ready infectious. Every seat was lled with true

fans who knew what it meant to be at that game

The ceremony began as Jeter’s family was brought on to the eld, his nephew Jalen in-stantly stealing the show with his own “Re2pect”

hat-tip to Jeter. As they began to call some ofJeter’s former teammates out, you realized justhow long this guy had been part of Yankeeshistory. David Cone, Paul O’Neill, Posada, MoBernie Williams, Tino Martinez, all Yankeeslegends in their own right, were here to paytheir respects to one of the greatest players ofour time. When Michael Jordan walked outthe crowd erupted. This was a guy who had sin-gle-handedly turned the idea of an athlete into

a brand and who helped launch the “Re2pect”tagline that is now so embedded in fan’s mindsOnce Jeter walked on that eld, every singleperson in that stadium was standing and cheer-ing with all their heart. The gifts came next butthose didn’t matter. Jeter didn’t need fancy giftsor an over-the-top ceremony. Just looking out atthe eld with the rows of white chairs lled andthe entire stadium lled spoke for itself. Everysingle person in that stadium was there to hon-

or the Captain. The score wouldn’t matter thatday, all that mattered was giving Jeter a propersend-off from the team that he gave so much to

At the end of the ceremony, the attention turnedto the jumbo-tron, where they played a montageof Jeter’s careers. Now I am not one who getsoverly-emotional about being a sports fan. It issomething I love and I am passionate about, but when I say that I got actual chills during that

Derek Jeter Day  MEGAN MORELLI grew up just 15 minutes away rom Yankee Stadium in Yonkers, NY but currently lives in NYC

(still just 15 minutes rom the stadium!). She works in digital advertising at Omnicom Media Group. Afer

graduating rom Ithaca in May 2013, she worked at Yankee Stadium as a guest relations ambassador or the resto the 2013 season. Being at the stadium every single day and being a part o the Yankee amily, even just or a ewmonths, was an incredible experience and one that she will never orget. Below, she recalls “Derke Jeter Day” at the

    Stadium.

ceremony, I am being dead serious. Real goose- bumps. Then it was Jeter’s turn to speak. As wehave seen over the years, Jeter is a man of few

words. He kept it brief and didn’t let his emotionsget the best of him. But what he said was import-ant and it came from the heart, and you couldfeel that in every word he said. He thanked thefans and the Yankees organization and the cere-mony ended with a standing ovation that couldhave lasted hours. Then it was time to play ball.

Like I said before, the score didn’t matter thatday, but for the record we lost. The game wasall about Jeter. Every single time he got up to bat you’d think he was hitting a grand slam inthe World Series. He couldn’t do any wrongthat day. One of my favorite parts of the day was in-between innings they were playing vid-eo messages to Jeter from current and formermajor leaguers. Some were sincere, some werefunny, but what was so cool is that for just a fewminutes, no rivalries mattered. Pedroia and Or-tiz, two of my personally least favorite players

popped up on the screen to thank Jeter and Ididn’t care about what team they played for – noone can say anything bad about Jeter no matter

what team you play for or root for. He has playedthe game the right way from beginning to endand has set the bar high for what a role modelshould be in this game. That is clear from the re-spect he has gained from all players in the league

Overall, my experience at his retirement cer-emony is one I will never forget. It was partic-ularly special to be sharing the moment withmy boyfriend, who I met while we worked to-gether at Yankee Stadium during the 2013season. It will certainly be weird this upcom-ing season not seeing #2 out there betweensecond and third base, but this is not the endof Derek Jeter. He will be a sports icon forev-er, and I can’t wait see him in Cooperstown

    STORYBOOK

ENDING JESSICA REUHER (below) is a senior Early Childhood/Special

Education student at Misericordia University and grew up a Yankee an. Her parents were huge ans and turned

her into one, and Jorge Posada and Derek Jeter were her two avorite players. Below, she recounts the game thaseemed straight out o a movie script: a walk-off in his last game at Yankee Stadium.

What was on the bases also came up on snapchat which I thought was pretty cool. Snapchat alsohad a feature story about the game. In betweeninnings they would play random clips of Jetermemories that were very heartfelt. I had a personal favorite of a video of fans saying farewell to Jeter. In the 7th inning, I thought it was his last at bat

but when Baltimore came back in the 9th I keptthinking there is no way Jeter can lose his last homegame. When Jeter came up with the score 5-5 inthe bottom of the 9th I thought to myself “He is

going to have a walk off right now.” And he did! Ido not even know how to describe the feeling I felt besides I was speechless. People were jumping upand down, yelling, screaming, and crying left andright. It was a great part of my life that I will neverforget. When I was listening to his interview afterthe game it made me super excited to know that I witnessed his last time playing short stop. He was a player that I grew up with and was a big rolemodel to me.

he energy at the beginning of the game wascrazy. Everyone was yelling and going crazy! They quieted down though when the rst twoOrioles batters knocked out solo home runs. When it was the Yankees turn to bat in the rstinning everyone was on their feet. I knew this wasgoing to be an adrenaline rush game. One thing

I noticed was Jeter forgot his elbow pad. Hemust have been so nervous. It was electrifyingevery time that Jeter came up to bat because Inever knew if it was his going to be his last at bat. Every time he came up to bat the crowdchanted his name “Der-Ek Je-Ter”. You could tellhe was taking everything in, especially the way he would turn and look at the crowd when he wasin the eld. One thing I liked was how there wascommemorative bases for his last home game.

Derek Jeter acknowledges the crowd one final timeafer his walkoff hit.
