Association of Atlantic Universities (AAU) - second volume of the AAU Public Policy Paper Series, shares its perspective on why University Research is Vital to the Growth of the Knowledge Economy

Canada’s leading economists agree that the knowledge economy is becoming increasingly important as the nation’s traditional manufacturing sector declines. This paper suggests that the world-class research capabilities, already in place Atlantic Canada’s 17 universities, give Atlantic Canada a competitive advantage in this new economic order. The private sector’s role is clear: It must partner with academic researchers in building a stronger, more efficient, greener economy in a region poised for success. Compared to most competitor nations in the developed world, Canada has established its universities as centres of Research and Development excellence.

Leading research organizations, including the Rockefeller Institute, have concluded that universities have become the real incubators of success in North America’s knowledge economy. Atlantic Canada’s 17 universities continue to demonstrate that they have research capacity in place that can serve as a catalyst for progressive growth. In the past year, two institutions in the region have received national recognition and federal funding as centres of research excellence.
