What are the latest trends in hospitality? How can we solve the problem of not enough quality staff?
ROBERT GASSERGeneral Manager, Courtyard by Marriott Belgrade City Center
This year’s Best Stay conference will be focused on the best hospitality trends that work in practice. What are the current trends that you see
happening? In general, I do believe that “make it your own” in any regards, such as using private devices in guest rooms, as they use in their own home, is one of the key features which differentiates hotels now and in the future. In addition, mobile flexibility and mobile enhancements in the pre-arrival, arrival and post-arrival stage are getting more important to the customer, to have all stages tailor-made to each individual need. In food and beverage, the trend remains the same. Authentic and recognisable, local quality ingredients and crafted food and beverage offers are still what guests are looking for. Organic and health concerned offers will continuously be on the rise.
What are you most looking forward to at this year’s Best Stay?
Best Stay is the best professional industry conference that the region has to offer. It connects professionals with the same issues and opportunities and gives everybody the chance to learn from each other’s experience. This, and all the panels and workshop, I am looking forward to the most. And it is for me a great honour to be part of the conference programme.
ŽIVORAD VASIĆIHG Area Manager, Crowne Plaza Belgrade, InterContinental Ljubljana, InterContinental Sofia and InterContinental Bucharest
As an awarded manager in hospitality, what would you point out as the necessary qualities that a leader should have?
You would be surprised about how many times I have realised managers would do a much better job than general managers. All general managers make mistakes, often they don’t ask open questions to their staff and don’t empower their managers to deliver.
In my experience, when you ask an open-ended question, you will be surprised to find out how your managers will react and reply to that. Most of the time, they would come up with better ideas than I could have thought of myself, which is a good thing.
Afew months before the Best Stay 2018 hospitality conference, we had a chat with some of this year's speakers, international hospitality experts, to get their opinion on burning questions and hottest trends.
BEST STAY NEWS BEST STAY NEWS
At Best Stay, you will be participating on a panel about the future of hospitality and what we expect to see in the next five to ten years – can you give us a short insight into the discussion?
At Best Stay conference, there will be significant talk about what will happen in the next 5 to 10 years. The biggest trend I see happening in the next years is a tremendous opening of 3 star branded hotels.
Why is that? Because these hotels offer clean rooms, quality beds, good Wi-Fi connection and make much more money than 4 or 5 star hotels as they have a lower investment.
Therefore, brands like IHG, Accor Hotels, Hyatt, Hilton or Starwood will probably be opening more and more 3 star hotels.
ZAFIRIS LAMPADARIDISGeneral Manager, Mercure Belgrade Excelsior, AccorHotels
As a general manager, what do you think is most important in team management, how do you choose your co-workers, and what results are you looking for?
Talking about team management, diversity and inclusion
are key. Diverse teams always perform better. All type of aspects of diversity, such as gender equality, origin, age or background have the potential to improve a team’s skills. In a team, it is very important to establish a cooperative atmosphere to achieve common goals. We encourage initiatives, welcome innovations and empower our employees. Employees are the most valuable resource of a hotel, we call
them talents at AccorHotels. We focus on hiring open-minded, motivated and talented people, integrating and keeping them in our evolving company culture by offering them learning and career opportunities. Our motto at AccorHotels for the employees is “Feel Valued”, which means that we want our employees to feel that their personality, talent and work are appreciated. Happy employees will make our guests happy, and these guests will come back to the hotel…
What would you share with our participants, if you only had one minute?
Do not be afraid to try new things in order to please the guest, do not be afraid to fail. Hospitality is evolving and we need to explore new paths to make a guest’s stay at our properties a memorable experience. There is nothing carved in stone in order to achieve that. Respect the individuality, spend time with guests and spend time with your own associates. They both will show you the way to succeed in whatever you plan.

ABOUT VALAMAR
Valamar Riviera, the leading tourism company in Croatia, which can welcome around 57,000 guests in its 33 hotels and resorts and 15 camping resorts from
Istria and Kvarner to Dubrovnik, continues with successful growth. Investments in digital technology are important part of the company's development, and together with Hrvatski Telekom, Croatia’s leading telecommunications company, Combis and Cisco Systems, Valamar has successfully launched a project of introducing advanced Wi-Fi solution into its objects.
CHALLENGEIt is well known that fast and undisturbed Internet connection is among top demands of guests today. Although Valamar, prior to launching this project, offered its guests Internet access, the Wi-Fi coverage was uneven, with about 1,500 access points and equipment from different manufacturers.
SOLUTIONWi-Fi project in Valamar was planned to be completed over a period of three years (2017–2019), and currently 40 objects (hotels, campsites) are covered with more than 6,000 wireless access points. Now Valamar can support up to 60,000 concurrent clients and devices at any one time, which was unthinkable just two years ago.Hrvatski Telekom connected all the locations with the
central hub in its data center, provided a bandwidth of 400 Mb to 10 Gb, and, for Croatian terms, a very impressive 12 Gbps Internet speed.Combis, leading IT service provider in Croatia, designed the entire Wi-Fi system and implemented it before the start of the tourist season and also designed a LAN segment. The wireless system is based on Cisco Systems' world-leading networking technology, and for improving monitoring and reporting, Combis has further developed the Wi-Fi and LAN monitoring app. Combis also provides services of proactive and reactive maintenance.
MAIN BENEFITS• increased guest's satisfaction• uniform level of service at all locations• higher level of quality management with centralized
supervision• continuous provision of services with timely response
if needed
PLANS FOR THE FUTUREProject fulfilled its expectations in all aspects – realization in accordance with the plan and the financial framework and quality of the Wi-Fi system achieved higher guest ratings than expected. The 2018 phase of the project is successfully completed, and it is expected that number of wireless access points will even surpass 7,000 by the end of 2019.
